I take this opportunity to wish all Year 12 well in their preparation and completion of all examinations on behalf of the staff and students of Maitland Grossmann High. We also wish them well in their futures, as they move on to further studies and employment. Year 12 Formal is being held at the end of the examinations, in the vineyards. Please note there is NO organised or condoned Year 10 Formal. It is no longer required, as all students are to attend school until at least 17 years of age. The school is investigating the use of an e-diary for students. This diary will operate from the student phones, computer or tablets and will have all assignments, assessments and homework, with alerts for due dates. Parents will be able to login to remain informed. Students will be able to write in their e- diary but will not be able to delete assignments, homework and assessment tasks. The summer months are approaching and we are looking to install a further filtered, chilled water bottle station, to encourage students to drink more water. Students need a sturdy drink bottle which can be refilled as required. School uniform standards remain a priority for Maitland Grossmann High. Please note canvas shoes are not an acceptable form of footwear. Girls are not permitted to wear shorts to school except for sport on Tuesdays. The school appreciates your continued support of the high standard of dress, and remind families that assistance is available for those who find the cost of the uniform difficult. SRC

Hello everyone!

The SRC has had a very busy end of term 3. The new Captains, Vice Captains and Prefects were voted

in and will be inducted next term.

We celebrated the MGHS 130 year anniversary with an assembly in the hall open to past students,

teachers and interested community members. With the assistance of the SRC and coordination by Mrs

Osborne and James Hannah, the day was a huge success, including the MGHS film project, interviews

with past students and teachers, musical entertainment, morning tea in the library and tours of the

school led by the Prefects and SRC members. As well as this, we had a whole school photo in which

we managed to fit all staff and students into the quad to get the perfect shot.

On Tuesday the 9th of September, the SRC assisted in the Year 6 orientation. The day began with a

range of musical performances for all students attending Maitland Grossmann High School next year.

They then separated into peer support groups led by year nine peer support leaders. The SRC took the

students around on school tours, returning for a BBQ lunch. Finally, the year 6 students were taken to

various "taster" classes which gave them an idea of what high school will be like. It was a very

successful day, and we hope the year 6 students are excited to begin at MGHS next year.

Last Friday the Prefects participated in "D-Day" to raise

awareness for the hearing impaired. This involved prefects

wearing ear muffs for 2 hours to experience some degree of

hearing impairment.

130 YEAR CELEBRATIONS

Our full school photograph was taken on Monday 1st September. After so much wet weather we were

very fortunate to have a beautiful clear blue sky to capture the photograph of our students and staff in

the quadrangle. Thank you to John Parmenter and Mr McLuckie for working together to get us all

organised. This photograph will join three others in the school foyer, capturing school at certain times

in our history.

The 130 year celebration assembly on Thursday 4th September was enjoyed by all who attended. The

comments after the assembly have been very complimentary and the spirit of our school was captured

by the items and most certainly, the musical items.

Many people were involved in the day and helped contribute to its success, including SRC members

who were ushers and tour guides, some members of the Year 10 Journalism class designed and

produced a brochure as a memento of the day and Year 12 hospitality students catered at the morning

tea. Thank you to all staff and students who contributed in any way.

It was a pleasure to work with James Hannah of Year 11 who also coordinated the assembly. It was

certainly a team effort.

Keep looking at the Our School section of our website where we will have some memories of our day.

CAREERS

This has been a busy term. Some Year 10 students have recently completed their Work Experience

week and are in the process of returning evaluations. Thank you to the employers who hosted our

students. Year 10 students who are still interested in doing Work Experience have another

opportunity, 17th-21st November. Paperwork is available from my office.

Well done Year 10 students. The interviews to assist you with your senior subject selections were a

great success. I was very impressed with your knowledge and preparedness.

Congratulations to students who have been successful gaining employment. Many students are still

going through interviews--good luck.

Year 12 has until 30th September to apply on line, on time for university placements offered by UAC.

Students have received their UAC guides and are in the process of applying.

Most of UAC’s participating institutions have Educational Access Schemes to help students who have

experienced long term educational disadvantage gain admission to university. The Educational Access

Scheme applications are on the UAC website or available from the careers office.

Newstep, a tertiary preparation program is offered by Newcastle University for 18-20 year olds who

didn’t complete the HSC due to adverse circumstances or who didn’t gain sufficient marks for entry

into university. For more information, go to www.newcastle.edu.au/newstep.

Year 9 students will participate in Career Quest on Thursday 9th September during periods 1-6,

organised by Youth Express. The students will rotate through mini workshops with representatives

from many different organisations and careers.

Congratulations to Todd Wilson of Year 12 who received an ADFA Education Award. Todd was

presented with a laptop. We wish him well as he completes his HSC, with a goal of entering the

Defence Forces and completing his chosen degree at ADFA.

INDUSTRIAL ARTS

Year 11 Design and Technology have been working on robotics this term and students have designed

and modified the parts of a mechanical kit to develop their own robot, with its own characteristics and

ability to move either by walking or on wheels. The students merged skills in manufacturing,

electronics and design to complete this task with some interesting results that showed the students

creative ability to think about problem solving. Below are two robots constructed by students Joshua

Nevins and Ryan Lange.

Year 8 Debating

We have two teams entered in the Year 8 Premiers Debating Competition this year and they have had

excellent results. Our A team consisting of Claudia Williams, Cassy Reily, Juliet Taylor and Jessica

O'Brien had a win against Hunter River High and then were defeated by Dungog High. They then had a

narrow defeat against our own B team consisting of Grace Ahrens, Laura Beaumont, Macey Collet and

Abbey Bayles. The B team had already defeated both Dungog and Hunter River, making them the

zone champions.

Congratulations to both teams and good skills to team B who will contest the quarter final early in term

four.

YEAR 7 GALA DAY

Our school was well-represented by the current year 7’s at this popular event with 150 students

attending the fun oriented day. Although the emphasis was on participation and sportsmanship there

were some fine exhibitions of skilled play. Congratulations to the boys soccer team and mixed

newcombeball teams on their first placings.

SPORT CHOICE TERM 4 – 2014

Sport choices will be made during week 8, term 3, 2014. Discuss your selection and the costs involved with

your parents prior to making your selection. All students are required to attend sport.

This term we will again be signing up for sports. You will be informed of the times. Whichever sport you

sign up for is your allocated sport for the term. Do not ask to change as refusal sometimes offends.

In 2014, no student is able to attend sport until they have paid their bus money in full ($40). Any student

who owes bus money will not be able to sign up for a bus sport until all owed monies are paid. As soon as

you select a bus sport you need to start paying it off.
