Choices after EES Science

Chemistry (doubling up with Biology or HBio only w/teacher recommendation)

Prerequisites • Biology: Passed both semesters of Honors EES

or EES.

• Applied Biology: Passed EES and teacher recommendation.

• Honors Biology: A or B in Honors EES or EES; Teacher recommendation.

• Chemistry in the Community• Chemistry• Chemistry Honors

• Physics or AP Physics 1 (doubling up with Honors Chemistry or chemistry w/teacher recommendation)

Prerequisites• Chemistry Honors: Grade B or better in Algebra I,

currently enrolled in Honors Geometry or Algebra II or higher, passed Biology with a B or Biology Honors, and teacher recommendation.

• Chemistry: Grade C or better in Algebra I, currently enrolled in math higher than Algebra I. Passed Biology.

• Chemistry in the Community: Biology or Applied Biology and teacher recommendation.

Choices after Chemistry

• If you plan on attending college, most 4-year colleges and universities prefer to see 4 years of science.

• Also if you are planning to major in science, engineering, math, or health care, then you are expected to take four years of science.

• If you have only taken Biology and then Chemistry you still must take another science course. The next slides are examples of courses you can take. If you plan on going to college, Physics is an ideal course for you.

Physics Courses• Conceptual Physics: Algebra I, Chemistry or

ChemCom (or currently enrolled in).

• Physics: Grade C or better in Algebra I and Geometry. Currently enrolled in or passed Chemistry or Chemistry Honors.

• AP Physics will be on the AP slides

Other Options

• Other Science options include one semester science courses or Advanced Placement Courses (AP).

• Remember…Most colleges like to see 4 years of science on your transcript.

Optional Science ElectivesOne semester classes

• Human Anatomy and Physiology: Passed Biology and currently enrolled in or passed Chemistry or Chem Com or teacher recommendation.

• Genetics: Biology and currently enrolled in or passed Chemistry or ChemCom or teacher recommendation.

Optional Science Electives One semester classes

• Astronomy: Currently enrolled in or passed Algebra I, Chemistry or Chem Com, or teacher recommendation.

• Geology: Currently enrolled in or passed Chemistry or Chem Com or teacher recommendation.

• If you are planning to go into the health field – taking Genetics and/or Anatomy & Physiology would help you with later studies.

• If you have not taken Earth Environmental Science – taking Astronomy and/or Geology would be a good way to increase your science knowledge.

Why take an AP Course?Statistics• Only 33% of students without AP experience who

enter a four year institution will graduate

• Compare that to AP students: Taking one AP class increases your % to graduate to

59%Taking two AP classes increases your % to 70%

In other words…you learn how to “do college”.

• Potential college credit without tuition.

• Your teacher is available to you much more often than that college professor.

• Smaller class sizes than that in college.

• AP Physics 1: Grade: 10th (with teacher rec);11, 12 Prerequisite: Algebra II and currently enrolled in trigonometry, and currently enrolled in chemistry or passed chemistry with a B.

• AP Physics 2: Grade: 11th or 12th. Prerequisite: AP Physics 1.

• AP Physics C (Mechanics): Chemistry or Chemistry Honors, Physics or AP Physics 1, and currently enrolled in AB or BC Calculus or Calculus III.

• AP Biology: A or B in Biology or Biology Honors and Chemistry or Chemistry Honors, and teacher recommendation.

• AP Chemistry: Grade B or better in Chemistry or Chemistry Honors, Algebra II, and teacher recommendation.

Advanced Placement Courses

• New next school year-AP Environmental: Requires successful completion of Algebra II, Biology and Chemistry.

• This course will relate to our of the natural world and allow us to identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them.

Advanced Placement Courses

• All students enrolled in an AP class are expected to take the AP exam given in May. The cost of the exam is currently $92.00
