much. I am fond of cinema and cinema stars. When I was young, it was my wish to be an actor,

a famous star in the world of cinema, but I am now an accountant in a famous bank. I like my

job very much, but still like the cinema more.

Once, I watched a very frightening film at a friend’s house. The story of the film was that a

man followed a beautiful young girl for a long time, from one place to another and at the end of

the film he killed her without any mercy.

Late at night, I left my friend’s house and took a bus to the Metro station. A man sat next

to me, began looking at me but I didn’t care. When I got off the bus, he followed me. I hurried

to the station to take the last Metro to my house. The man was in the same Metro and kept

looking at me. Now I became convinced that he was going to hurt me so I walked quickly to my

house. Finally I reached the door of my flat. He came near me and told me that he was my new

neighbour.

COMPREHENSION (6 ) MARKS

II- Reading Comprehension ( 6Marks )

Read the following passage then answer the questions below:

I don't know if you have been to London. If you have, like it happened to me when I

visited my aunt. You've probably travelled in the rush hour, and you've probably been to

Oxford Circus. During the rush hour, there, the queue ( طابور) for the underground stretches for

a hundred yards along the pavement and around a few corners. You just have to join and slowly

edge forward.

She told me to go to the early performance at the cinema near Oxford Circus. I came out

about eight o'clock and walked towards the tube station. To my surprise I saw a queue exactly

as long as you usually see in the rush hour. I joined it, trying to work out why there were so

many people at that time. I eventually decided that a lot of people must have done what I had.

I waited for about ten minutes until we started to move forward. Like all English people,

I had a newspaper with me. I took it out and read it as I moved forward. When I was at the front

of the queue, I put it away, took my purse out and stepped inside. It was only when it was my

turn that I realized that I wasn't in the tube station at all! I was in another cinema, next door to

the entrance to the station. I would have felt so embarrassed if I hadn't bought a ticket. It

seemed a pity to waste it. So I checked what the film was. Luckily, I hadn't seen it before.

Reading Comprehension( 6 Marks)

Read the following passage , then answer the questions below:

People often collect things. Stamps, books and records are common things they like to

collect. But the strangest collection I have ever seen belongs to a man who possesses 1500

clocks.

This man is called Mr. James. He is an old man of about 88 years old. He lives in a small village

near the sea. He is a very rich man and could be richer if he sells some dozens of his clocks. He

always says each clock, he owns, has a story and like a paper in a great history book. Some of

these clocks are made of gold and others are made of silver, but as he always says there are some

clocks not made of gold or silver but more expensive and valuable like this one which was one

day in the palace of King Henry III.

There are clocks in every room of his house. The living- room is surrounded by shelves which

have been filled with clocks. As there is not enough room for so many clocks the man has filled

several trunks and stored them in the garage. His wife complains every day about the work she

has to do, for it is not easy to dust several hundred clocks. She also complains about the noise.

Each clock keeps its own time. In her opinion, however. there is sometimes even worse than dust

and noise. Even with so many clocks around, she never knows what time it is.

Choose the best answer from a,b ,c and d: ( 3× 1 = 3 )

II Reading Comprehension (12 Marks)

Read the following passage then answer the questions below:

Human beings need food, water and air which are all necessary for survival. People cannot

live without food to eat and oxygen to breathe. When it is cold, they need heat, clothes and place

to live. The environment provides these needs. People use the land and oceans for food. The

atmosphere which is the air around the earth contains oxygen. Energy for heat comes from

petroleum, trees or the sun.

Hundreds of years ago, the environment supplied food, and housing for everyone. Population

was low, and there was little industry. There was enough good land, fresh water, and clean air.

However, in the 18th century, the Industrial Revolution الثورة began in England. The western

world changed from an agricultural world to an industrial one. Many people moved from farms

to cities in order to work. Since 1850, both the population and industry have increased very

rapidly. People need more land, more water, and more resources daily. Industry is changing the

environment quickly. Some of these changes are harmful because they disturb the balance of

nature. One such example is pollution.

Factories release many chemical gases into the air. Gases from cars also cause air pollution

especially in big cities. Chemicals in the air cause smog in many large cities such as Tokyo and

Los Angeles. It is a disaster to breathe the air in these cities.
