Assignment of Motor Carrier Responsible for Safety

Provides mechanism for tying vehicle information to the motor carrier responsible for safety. This linkage between the carrier and vehicle enables State and Federal Governments to:
1) Identify the motor carriers responsible for the safety of the vehicles
2) Monitor the safety performance at both the carrier and vehicle level.

Default Motor Carrier
Vehicle registrant becomes a “default motor carrier” responsible for safety when:- Responsible carrier is expected to change in 29 days or less
- Responsible carrier not known at time of registration
Note: The USDOT number at the vehicle level (motor carrier responsible for safety) must be a “motor carrier” number and cannot be a “registrant only” number.
