( Bitutainer )
44
Advantage and disadvantage
of carriage of bitumen in
different styles :
• A) Carriage by ocean tanker carrying bitumen :
• Advantage :
- Huge volume of bitumen can be moved.
- Shipment as warm and ready for delivery.
• Disadvantage :
- Origin and destination must be fully equipped with required facility for loading and offloading the shipment .
- inadequate bitumen carriers in global market.
- Limited number of bitumen bulky buyers in the global market.
- Carriage costs for carrying and keeping bitumen warm may exceeds earning revenues.
- Shortage of bitumen storage farms compared with demand.
45
Advantage and disadvantage
of carriage of bitumen in
different styles :
• B) Carriage in loose drums :
• Advantage
• Cheaper for carriage in large quantum
• Suitable for locations /areas having remote accessibility,
• Disadvantage :
• Requires large volumes per shipment
• Uncontrolled shipping and delivery schedule
• Higher storage, capital idle costs
• The need for better quality drums to withstand multi tier loading expenses
• Higher lashing and dunnaging costs
• Chances of serious damages and leakage in the hold
46
Advantage and disadvantage
of carriage of bitumen in
different styles :
• C) Carriage by bitumen container carrier ( bitutainer )
• Advantage :
• Easy storage
• Easy and prompt movement in varied volumes by trucks carrying container.
• Possibility to keep bitumen warm onboard the ship.
• Needs no specific facility for loading and offloading them for which can be shipped to remote locations.
• Disadvantage:
• Being 11 Tone bitutainer tare weight, this will broadly reduce vessel GRT in volume.
• Large Time consuming for return of discharged containers in system .
• Fuel Cost of keeping bitutainer warm in loading and offloading is high.
47
Advantage and disadvantage
of carriage of bitumen in
different styles :
• D) carriage of bitumen in standard container
• Advantage :
• Low Freight
• Controlled schedule and delivery
• Remote areas accessibility
• Fast loading / offloading
• Easy & low storage costs
• Shipment at any volume

• Leakage in container if damaged
• Washing / cleaning cost in container if it leaks and not protected
• Container demurrage costs if box not returned timely

Problematic Areas
Bitumen in 20’ container

50
Problematic Areas
51
- A bitumen polluted container can never be cleaned
or washed to its original shape and condition.
- To economize the cost, this might be remedied by
trimming the surface of wooden floor or replacing
plywood on damaged areas.
- Long-lasting taint and smell in containers polluted by
bitumen makes it unusable for many products to be
carried in future, such as foods, papers, sensitive
cargoes, etc.
- Necessity to deep steam and chemical wash to remove
bitumen stains makes it a very costly affair.
- Even after cleaning and washing by chemical
detergents they may not be accepted for sensitive
commodities .

• Please always use new steel drums
• Drums to have enough ullage & free space to allow for probable expansions.
• Drums lids to be tightly secured, at least 5 times key turns.
• Drums to be cooled before stuffing , otherwise they become susceptible to damages and leakage during handling in CFS .
• Drums to be properly stowed and strapped to prevent movements, with enough dunnage in between tires .
• Container floors as well as sides to be duly covered by polythene sheets with proper thickness, craft paper , sawdust, etc.
• Jumbo bags on 2nd tier to be lifted by nets to prevent extra pressure on lower tier.
• IRISL has a special logistic area of 40 acres at Bandar Abbas with all required facilities.
• We can also supply containers at Bandar Imam Khomeini which is close to some of the refineries in south west of Iran .
• IRISL offers special scheme of self insurance per container at $30/box
