Philosophy
• Challenge for IT– Business users need standardization– Kids need variety• For engagement• For exposure; for stimulation
– Kids will invent the future– Kids need to be exposed to as much as possible
• IT as an enabler; not a stumbling block– C&I gets to choose what works best for them

Why Apple?
• Instructional need for spontaneous access to information and flexibility in the classroom.
• Apple is the standard for creative design.• Affordable classroom solution (iPod Touch)
9
Timeline
• March 2009– Apple infrastructure installed– Tech Apps labs received iMacs
• September 2009– MacBooks, iMacs, and iPod Touches in every library
• August 2010– iPads added to the libraries– Classroom Based Technology project launched– Mixture of different technology including iPods Touches
• August 2011– iPad added to Classroom Based Technology Project– Now shifting to more iPads and less iPod Touches

Purchasing Apps
• iTunes Gift Card or Credit card– Purchases are tied to Teacher email used on the iTunes
account on Teacher laptop– Must pay Sales Tax
• Volume Purchase Program– Apps are purchased centrally through a district account– App codes distributed to teachers
• Either via Email or through a 3rd party solution like Casper
– Teachers download apps using App codes– Apps belong to the email account that Teacher uses to
redeem App codes
16
Volume Purchase Program
• Allows Education Institutions to Purchase Multiple Copies of an App tax free and often discounted
• Program Manager– Sets up VPP and creates program facilitator accounts
• Program Facilitator– purchases Apps from education store
• Volume Voucher– Program facilitator redeems voucher into account and purchases the
App• App Code
– When an App is purchased, the program facilitator is given an App code to redeem
17
Volume Purchase Program
One central Program Manager + one Program Facilitator at each campus or department
19
Volume Purchase Program
• Once you purchase an App through VPP how do you get it to the device?– A redemption link (URL) can be emailed to the
user– Mobile Device Management Solution
• The iTunes account that redeems App code will own the App
20
Mobile Device Management
• Casper (JAMF)• Inventory
– Device information– Installed Apps– Create smart groups
• Configuration– Wireless– Restrict access of built-in services– If management is removed, deployed Apps are removed
• App Distribution– iOS 4 – Apps can be installed through Self-Service– iOS 5 – Apps can be pushed to devices
21
App Implementation
• One Spring Branch ISD iTunes account in order to maintain ownership of Apps
• One central Program Manager• Program Facilitator for each campus or
department (50+)• Program Facilitator uses Casper to distribute App
codes to devices• End user (teacher) redeems under a single SBISD
iTunes account
22
App Implementation
• Challenges– In order to maintain “ownership” of Apps, the App codes must be
redeem under an Spring Branch ISD iTunes Account– If App code is redeem under a personal account, there is no way to
regain ownership– Program facilitators will need to learn minor system administration in
Casper– For mass distribution, smart groups are not easily created– 50+ accounts to look for information (App codes)– When App is pushed, defaults to iTunes account that is currently signed
in (iOS5)– When App code is scoped to device through Self Service, teacher must
remember to use Spring Branch ISD iTunes Account (iOS4 or iOS5)
23
App Implementation
• Exploring easier methods– Gift cards and individual teacher iTunes accounts
• Exploring more cost effective methods– Casper is a large expense in pursuit of inexpensive
Apps!– Under VPP Apps must be purchased for each
device, at a discounted price– Under normal App store purchase, can have an
App on up to 10 devices
