(1) Navigating the Internet: A Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is the unique address which identifies a resource on the Internet for routing purposes. Know how to interpret URLs.

Use a "traceroute" program such as "WhatRoute" (Mac) or Neotrace (PC) to trace the route between your computer and and a website outside of the United States. Include a screen shot showing a map and the text of the specific route taken when contacting the website. Compare your findings with those of others in the class. Are websites always located in the country in which they are registered? What does this show about the nature of Internet-based business and commerce?

Compare the connection in the CSUN laboratory with your connection at home or school. What are the IP addresses of the computers you are working with? What kind of connections are your working with (dial-up, DSL, cable, 100-Base TX (twisted-pair LAN), 100-Base FX (fiber LAN), etc.)? Compare are your connection speeds.

Most schools have developed Acceptable Use Policies (AUP) and have installed filters to keep student focused on education. Include text (scan or download is easiest) of your school's AUP and a description of the filters in place. If a school AUP is not available, provide a sample AUP, cite its source, and provide a link. If your are not working in a school, summarize how filters work.

This is a map of a website is for the country Nicaragua. The link is http://www.intur.gob.ni/ The host is from the actual country. When I compared with my other classmates it seemed that the majority of (Third World) poor countries that are hosting their home sites don’t really host it from their own country. The reason why I think this is the reason is because of the money it costs to hosts websites or the technology available. The poorer countries most likely don’t have the technology to host so they pay other countries to do it. The richer countries have other countries host their sites because it probably cost less to have them host it. In a business world, it doesn’t matter where your site is coming from but who has the technology or the money to host it.

(2) Knowing your School: Teachers should have a good understanding of their school, students, and thc communities they represent. Much statistical data can be gained using online resources. *TPE-tip You may wish to develop a case study of your school using this and you personal observations to meet TPE 8.

Develop a written profile of your school and students. Your profile should include the following: School distinctives : Study your school website and discuss school history,

distictives and goals. Geography: Describe your campus and its community using satellite photos

and maps. Using the photos, describe the nature of the community (commercial, apartments, single family homes, industry, etc.)

Socioeconomic status: Include maps showing the socioeconomic status (SES) of the communities contributing students to your school. Discuss two or more prominent SES characteristics of the school population.

School performance: Include test scores and the Academic Performance Index of your school. Discuss the academic climate of your school, including test scores, API, change in scores, dropout rate, English learners, students requiring special education, etc.

Venice High School:13000 Venice BlvdLos Angeles, CA 90066310-577-4200

School Profile:

Founded in 1911 with 52 students and faculty members. Their first classes were held in the lagoon houses by Windward and Second Street. The school was called Venice Union Polytechnic High School. In 1913 they bought twenty-nine acres around that area built a small academy. By 1924 the school moved to its current location on Venice Blvd due to a fire that destroyed the old campus. In 1923 the Boys' Gym was completed, and in 1925 the school was taken over by the city of Los Angeles and its name was changed to Venice High School. The shops were added in 1930 and the beautiful brick buildings were the pride of the community. On 1933 the Long Beach earthquake heavily damaged the campus. The old brick style classrooms were destroyed. For two years classes were held in tents on campus. On 1935 ground was broken for the new modern buildings that stand today. In February 1945, Mr. Homer K. Watson was named the new principal of Venice High School after Mr. Clark left who managed the school for fifteen years. His contributions to Venice High School were enormous that they honored the Football after him when he retired. The new gymnasium and the horticulture area that stands on Venice blvd. and Walgrove Avenue were added in 1952. The school has remained as beautiful as it was in 1952 today.

The following is a run down of the schools academic climate:The API score is 671. It ranks below average. I think the SES level of the students attending the school does affect the scores. The change in score from last years API was by five points. Not a huge difference, but and improvement. They did not beat their target range of 677.The dropout rate at the school from 2004-2005 was 6.6 students per grade. From the studies shown on The California Department of Education website, it displays that Venice high school has been lowering their drop out rate since 2001 of 7.5 and an overall rate of 14.1 in 1992. More students are graduating at the school. The English Learning Program at the school in 2006 displayed a result of having a 97.6% of students speaking Spanish as their first language from the California Department of Education website. The second spoken language is Vietnamese with 0.6%.The Special Education program at Venice High School has many students enrolled in them. The school has 386 students in the program. The ninth grade class has 156 of them enrolled in it.

(3) College Advisement: Secondary teachers often have the opportunity to advise students on decisions pertaining to college. In many environments, teachers are the only individuals students know who have been to college.

Describe a real or hypothetical student (interests, family SES, personality) who is interested in pursuing a career in a field related to what you teach. Recommend a major and 4-year college and explain the rationale for your recommendation using information found on college websites. Provide active links to the colleges, and quote relevant information.

Provide a paragraph of advice to the parents of this student regarding financing college. Consider their financial and family situation.

My hypothetical student that I will use for this assignment is Henry Avila. Henry is a twelve grade student at Venice High School. He is searching this fall semester for a four year university that he wants to attend according to his likes. From his profile and data researched online I will determine schools and methods of paying for the school for him.

Henry Avila 03/03/1990 Lives in Culver City, California. Hispanic Origin. Born in the United States with parents that came

from Nicaragua looking for political asylum. Family Income is $30,000 a year. Both parents work fulltime. He is in the high school baseball team and would like to continue

playing at the university level. Wants to go to a University in the state and wants to live near his

parents so he can visit them on the weekend. Or at least live in the same state.

Wants to become an Art teacher and get his Bachelors degree in Visual Arts.

Wants to live on campus and travel back home.

Below is a screen capture result of what Universities are available for Henry through the data inputted on Collage Board. http://apps.collegeboard.com/search/index.jsp

My advice to parents of Henry Avila is to seek financial Aide through the government grants and scholarships. I would first start by applying for the California Grants (http://www.csac.ca.gov/doc.asp?ID=20) and through Free Application for Student Aide (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/). Once those are taken care of and you see how much the government can help you, I would go with scholarships and grants from organizations. I would have Henry look for scholarships online. He can also find scholarships on things he likes to do like baseball and the arts. Below are some screen captures of scholarships that Henry could apply that pertain to his profile.

Listed below are some organizations that can help with grants and other funds.

(4) Professional Growth: Teachers should model "life-long learning" by attending workshops, reading journals, and participating in professional organizations.*TPE-tip You may wish to research professional organizations and employment opportunities and include plans for professional involvement and career development as part of your Individual Induction Plan required for TPE 13.

Describe a professional conference (related to your field) you may benefit from attending. Describe the purpose and scope of the professional organization sponsoring the conference and provide a synopsis of the conference and one or more selected workshops or presentations you would like to attend. Include a link to the professional organization and to the specific conference.

The professional organization that I would like to be part of is the National Art Educational Association. Their organization is based on all over the United States but their headquarters are in Reston, Virginia. The main goal for this organization is to educate and promote the concern for the quality of art education in the United States. The organization was started in 1947 with the subdivisions of the National Education of Arts coming together as one. They came together to promote art education through the professional development and leaderships educators. The organization is now hosting meetings, conferences, and promotional events of art education through

the internet. But they still have meetings and conferences around the states.

One of the workshops that I would like to attend through the National Art Educational Association is the Annual Convention occurring in March 28-31 in 2008. The conference will be held at The Hilton Hotel and Conference Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. The main purpose of the conference is to “is to provide substantive professional development services that include the advancement of knowledge in all sessions, events, and activities for the purpose of improving visual arts instruction in American schools.” I think the conference would benefit me because I can learn from various high school teachers on how develop by teaching of Art History.

(5) Employment: Most schools and districts advertise job openings on the Internet. Teachers should use such resources not only to find employment for themselves, but also to attract others to their schools and thus build strong departments.

Find a job announcement for a teaching position for which you are qualified. Include a screen capture of the advertisement. Describe the school and community using information found on the Internet. Cite your resources.

The following is a job posting for an Art Teacher position at Escondido High School. The school is located in the San Diego County. The school’s mascot is the cougar. There strong points of the school are their Music Program and their Athletics that have booster clubs. They also have a lot of parent involvement through this booster clubs. The school population is 52% Hispanic, 37% Caucasian, 3% African American, and 3% Asian. The school is located in middle class neighborhood. It’s a mixture of Hispanics and

The lesson will include a history of were the United States was at the time pertaining to art. The purpose of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s speech in 1939 was to introduce a new modern museum to the country. During that time the United Sates was trying to make it’s a name in the art world. It was competing against Europe and its art upbringing of socialist art in Germany and Italy. Students can learn how it took a President during that era to open the countries eyes to what kind of art they have in their own land. That art was not just in Europe but also in the United States. Below is a hyperlink to the audio clip. The audio clip was borrowed form the History Channel Website.
