General description

HBot 3D is a modern 3D printer with one of the largest working area available on the

market. Big rigidity and reliable elements of linear motion technology make high speed of

printing with very good quality and accuracy possible.

Closed cover, big working area, authorial electronics and software make a reliable product,

which may become a crucial component of your workshop even today. You can create

models of buildings and architectural models quickly and infallibly, you can materialize your

visions and present them instantly to your clients.

The manual is subject to certain update limitations related to printing process and

distribution. The most up-to-date version of the manual is always available on producer’s

website:

http://3d-printers.pl/downloads/HBot3D-manual-en.pdf.

Before using a product please read the newest version of the manual.

1.1. Functions

Hbot 3D is dedicated to building physical objects directly from 3D documentation made with

CAD tools. Capabilities of additive manufacturing, which is also called ‘3D printing’, might be

invaluable help while working at home, in the office, workshop or in a factory. 3D printing is

a technology which allows to build 3D objects economically and without the need of

additional gear and machining tools.

FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) technology has been used in a device. It utilizes polymers as

a base material to build 3D objects. One of the advantages of the technology is that there is

a quickly expanding group of materials which, besides standard materials such as PLA and

Page 5: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

ABS, contain composite material. Due to a growing number of materials, 3D printer users

are able to build objects which may be treated as prototypes but also as functional

elements. One of the largest working area on the market and a closed chamber sustaining

stable working conditions make Hbot 3D a very attractive offer for either professionals or

amateurs.

1.2. Safety

While using a device basic safety measures should be taken.

Remember:

- The device has EIC protection class 1 and has to be always connected to electricity

network with a functional PE protective joint (ethernet socket with a protective pin). It is

forbidden to use a device without meeting the condition, as in case of a breakdown it may

cause electric shock!

- Do not touch device’s hot-end during work as it reaches really high temperatures (above

200 °C). Contact with a heated head may lead to serious burns.

- Do not touch heated platform during work.

- Do not use a printer when a working chamber is open during work, as direct contact with

moveable elements may cause a trauma or serious injuries.

- During manual lifting of a working table (with the use of device’s control panel or YARRH

program) it is necessary to exercise utmost caution. A user must pay attention and

prevent a hot-end or XY-axis carriage from hitting a model being printed and located

underneath.

Put the box with a device on even ground. Open the upper cover of the box and bring out

printer’s pieces of equipment located in the compartment of the upper part of protective

foam. After bringing them out, protective foam might be removed. On device’s side panels

there are carry handles. With another person’s assistance, grab handles of both sides of the

printer and bring the device out of the box (Attention: the printer weighs 25kg!) and put

Page 19: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

gently on the ground. At the bottom of the device there will be protective foam. Grab the

printer by the handles again and raise it up slightly. The second person should remove the

bottom part of protective foam. After completing all of the above the printer should be put

in a destination working spot.

2.2. Connecting to power supply network

Two wires are connected to the device. One of them is the power cord and the other is to

connect the device with a computer using USB interface. During the first start it is enough to

connect the device to power supply as a trail 3D printing is done with the use of a file from

the attached microSD card.

Following the steps will help to complete it:

STEP 1

The power socket is located on the back side of the device.

STEP 2

Before connecting power supply make sure that the switch – next to the power socket – is

on ‘off’ position.

Bring the power cord out of the box and connect it to a socket with a proper end.

Connect another end to the power socket.

STEP 3

Now when the device is connected to the network put the power switch on power position

1.

STEP 4

On the control panel, power button’s backlight should be pulsing.

2.3. Working platform leveling

Providing a proper level of the platform in relation to the printing head is crucial to obtain

printouts of a high quality. Before the first start of the device, the fol lowing calibration

should be made. 3D Printers company tests and calibrates every printer at the end of a

production process. However during transportation, head’s position in relation to the table

might be somehow relocated and that is why the following procedure must be completed.

Page 21: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

STEP 1

Put the power switch on power position 1.

STEP 2

Turn on the device with Power button on the control panel.

STEP 3

Open the front door of the printer. Between X-axis carriage and the working table there is

printing head’s protective foam. It needs to be removed before leveling the platform

(Attention: remember to get to know printer’s coordinate system before leveling the

platform).

Page 22: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

STEP 5

The width of the aperture between the head and the working table should be of 0.1 mm.

The measurement of the aperture should be done by putting the attached template, a feeler

gauge with a 0.1 mm sheet or a thin sheet of paper between head’s nozzle and working

table’s surface.

If there is no resistance or there is no possibility of putting the template between the nozzle

and the working table, the width of the aperture between nozzle’s exit and the working

platform must be adjusted.

To do it turn the platform positioning screw in the corner on which the head is at the

moment (to move to another corner proceed to STEP 6). Clockwise or counter clockwise

turn of the screw makes the platform go up or down.

STEP 6

Setting appropriate distance between head’s nozzle and the working platform must be

repeated for every corner of the platform.

To do it enter the menu by pressing OK button on the panel. Select Prepare form the menu,

and then use down arrow to move to the last position on the menu and select

motorMotorsonfirming with OK button. At that moment kinematic components of the

printer can be moved manually (Attention: Moving elements manually must be done

Open GCODE – when selecting it we can open a previously generated file, ready to be used

in the model construction process. After selecting this position Windows Explorer displays a

window to choose file’s location. Such a file can be generated with YAARH from the STL file.

The process of generating a GCODE file is described in chapter 4.

GCODE file can be generated in other available environments but it should be considered

that 3D Printers Sp. z o.o. does not guarantee the quality of object’s construction process

which is performed on the basis of files generated outside YAARRH environment. YAARRH

environment is provided together with configuration files adjusted to the material delivered

by printer’s producer. By using it, the optimal parameters of printouts will be obtained.

The producer is constantly working on optimization of software configuration and adjusting

it to delivered material parameters. In case of YAARH configuration changes, the program

will update automatically after its start, providing that the computer has the internet access.

Remember that using GCODE file from different source may cause device’s malfunctions

and element’s damages.

Open STL – enables opening the STL file. A detailed description might be found in 4.3.

Connection

There is a possibility of making a remote connection with the device with the use of LAN. To

do it connect both the device and a computer to the same local LAN. With this solution the

Slic3r –in this section, location tracks of Slic3r are given. This program supports YARRH

environment and configuration files work. The tracks shouldn't be modified by

inexperienced users.

ATTENTION: In YARRH package 'cutting' Slice3r software is used. It is available and

distributed as open source. Printer's producer - 3D Printers sp. z o. o does not take direct

responsibility for errors and imperfections related with the use of this program. We do our

best to test software version together with YARRH package in relation to Hbot 3D, and to

make configuration file of the program allow to use all printer and exploitation material's

(filament’s) possibilities.

3.5. Connecting a device to a computer with the USB cable

USB port of the device is located on its backside wall in the bottom left corner.

After connecting with the device the buttons controlling axes and temperature will be

activated, in the bottom part of the screen LAN icon should be visible.

4. 3D printing preparation 3D model preparation with the use of modeling

software

3D printing which uses FFF technology has some limitations. When designing elements for

3D printing these limitations must be considered. Below there are tips that may help to

make models being designed fulfill technological requirements.

The minimum gauge of element’s partition is limited by printing head’s

diameter, which is 0,4mm for Hbot 3D

The maximum pitch angle of model’s walls might be 45°. To build elements of

higher pitch, they should be constructed with supporting structures. To

read about generating of supporting structures - see 4.4.

Model’s base should be flat so that model’s first layer can stick to the working

platform.

If a model are made with the use of surface-modeling-based software,

objects should be made in a way so created surfaces make a closed chunk.

If a model is built from bigger number of surfaces, surfaces shouldn’t

Page 42: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

intersect. In other case there may be errors in a generated STL file on the

basis of which printer’s control commands are created afterwards. To

read about possible errors of SLT screens see 4.2.

4.2. STL file verification

A proper selection of triangle screen is a very important procedure wile generating STL files.

This stage should be completed with the utmost care - pay attention to parameters such as

triangle screen’s density, which depends on selected latitudes, or proper construction of a

screen.

Special tools such as NetFabb (available on http://www.netfabb.com/) should be used to

verify proper construction of a triangle mesh.

It is a very important activity as triangle mesh errors may cause incorrect construction of a

model.

Common errors for triangle screens are:

Intersecting triangles

Unclosed walls/surfaces of a model

4.3. Loading STL file to YARRH and 3d object manipulation

STL is a standard format used in 3D printing. Most of 3D modeling programs allow to save a

model in this format

To open STL file in YARRH select File and Open STL. After selecting Open STL, find file’s

location with the use of displayed Windows Explorer window. After selecting a file, the

window for preparation the files to construction displays.

4.3.1 STL manipulation widnow

After selecting Open STL in File menu the window for STL manipulation opens.

Page 43: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

basic materials provided by printer’ s producer. Select from the Config. list. To find out more

see 4.4.

Page 44: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

4.3.1.2 Object manipulation

Additional objects can be open with Open File button.

X and Y fields

The beginning of coordinate system, for graphic area and for the working platform, is in the

left front corner. It corresponds with the point of coordinates X,Y,Z<0,0,0> in printer’s

coordinate system.

Y-axis is directed towards the back wall, and X-axis towards the right wall of the device. Z-

axis is directed upwards.

X i Y fields allow to define the position of the central object in a specific place of the working

area.

Scale allows to scale the object. Scaling is expressed as a percentage of the original sizes.

Rotation allows to rotated the object in relation to vertical Z-axis. Rotation is expressed In

degrees of rotation.

Height, Width and Length represent object’s maximum sizes in three dimensions. Graphic

icons visible on the right side of Object manipulation section allow to perform the actions

described in the table below.

Pointing the object in the working area

Selecting multiple objects

Deleting objects from the working area

Manual positioning the object in the working

area

Object’s secular reflection on axis X, Y or Z

Copying the elements in the working area

Page 45: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

4.3.1.3 Export

In this section there are two options:

GCODE – the option allows to export the object, which was previously set in the working

area, to the GCODE file. The file in this format contains the list of command for executive

elements of the device. While GCODE file generating, the location of the file is to be

determined.

STL – the option allows to generate a file containing more than one object, in STL format.

This tool is useful in case when the prepared working platform contains a lot of objects

whose configuration will be used many times during subsequent construction processes.

Saved positions of objects from STL file can be later opened in YARRH. Thanks to this option

we can generate GCODE files with the use of various parameters (layer’s height and

efficiency of space filling) of the objects made or various materials which require selection of

a distinct configuration of construction parameters.

4.3.1.4 Table preview

In Table preview graphic area, a virtual representation of the platform is visible. It allows to

see object’s exposure preview.

The working area manipulation operations:

rotating the working area about three axes by clicking and holding the right mouse

button and moving the mouse

zooming in and zooming out the camera in relation to the working table with the use

of mouse’s scroll

moving object on the working area by pointing it with the mouse’s cursor

Additionally, there is a possibility of turning on one of three views of the working area with

the use of the buttons located directly above the table preview area.

There are following views’ exposures:

Page 46: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

Front –the front view of the platform

Side – the side view of the platform

Top – the view of the platform from the top

4.4. Print parametres selection

Printing parameters are configured in Slicer’s options section in STL files manipulation

window. Configuration files are initially prepared for basic materials provided by the

producer. Selection should be made from Config. list. 3D Printers company regularly updates

configuration files, willing to constantly improve the quality of printed models. In case of

configuration parameters change YARRH updates automatically during the start. To update,

make sure the computer on which the program was installed has access to the Internet. By

selecting appropriate default Config, we make the device work using standard parameters.

The user can change some YARRH parameters. These are: Layer height, Infill and Support.

Layer height defines the height of a single layer of the model being constructed. This

parameter influences the quality of model’s surface and that is why its value can be changed

in relation to model’s function. Recommended range in which changes can be made is 0.10

– 0.30 mm. 0.20 mm is a standard value providing outer surfaces of a high quality. Standard

value of layer height is 0.20mm and it should ensure high quality of print. When a high

quality of mapping is not necessary in outer surfaces, the height of a single layer can be

increased. It will speed up the printing but with a significant pitch angle of model’s outer

walls it may cause aliasing higher.

Infill is a parameter defining the efficiency of space filling of the object. 40% is a standard

value which provides a good construction result with material efficiency, objects low mass

and, what is related to it, decrease in working material consumption. The user can change

the value of this parameter in relation to endurance requirements for the model

Support – is the additional option which allows to generate supporting structures. They may

be needed when the objects being built has outer surface of the substantial deviation from

the vertical. Selecting option ‘Support’ allows to support overhang elements of the model.

Page 47: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

Additionally generated structure is easy to break. Sometimes the model built with the use of

supporting structures requires additional processing of supported surfaces.

4.5. GCODE file generating

When elements’ preparation on the working platform is completed, to print them we have

to go through the process of printing head’s GCODE instruction file generating. This process

converts STL to GCODE. GCODE file contains printer’s list of instructions.

Following steps will help to complete GCODE file generating:

STEP 1

In YARRH select File, which is in the left top corner of the window. Select Open STL from the

list and from the disk choose the file with a model to be printed. A new window with the

object in the working area, reflecting device’s real area, displays.

STEP 2

With the use of the tools available in the window, orient the model in the working area

according to your preferences. After placing a cursor on a particular tool its short

description displays.

STEP 3

From Config. list select proper configuration adjusted to currently used material.

STEP 4

In the window of STL manipulation, in Export section select ‘GCODE’ to convert. After

clicking it, the window, in which the target folder is to be chosen, displays. The target folder

as well as file’s name cannot contain Polish characters. After clicking Safe the program starts

Page 48: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

generating printing head’s tracks. This process may take from few second to 20 minutes or

more, depending on the size and complexity of STL and computer efficiency.

When GCODE instruction lists have been generated correctly, 3D model of the prepared

object sliced into layers and head’s tracks, is automatically opened by YARRH.

4.6 GCODE verification

Using YARRH you can check whether the GCODE file has been generated correctly. To do so,

use the scroll bar on the right side of the window with a 3D object. Scrolling it you can

analyze the whole model layer after layer.

A layer being currently analyzed is highlighted red, the rest of the model is highlighted grey.

The line represents the track along which the head will be moving. If you notice that the

head is moving In the space not connected with the model or supportive structures, see

4.1.and 4.2. to verify the model. After checking and correcting it, open the file again and

generate GCODE from the beginning. 3D model print with the use of a computer

After generating and verifying GCODE file, we can proceed to 3D model printing.

STEP 1

Make sure that the device is connected to the power and turned on, that YAARH has been

stared and is correctly connected with the printer (see 3.5).

STEP 2

Make sure that the surface of the working platform is properly prepared for the printing.

Preparation of the working platform is described in 5.1.

STEP 3

From the main panel select Print (left top corner of the main panel).

Page 49: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

If all the above has been completed, building of the model starts. 3D model print from

SD card without the use of a computer

Hbot 3D allows to print without the use of a computer.

To print without the use of a computer, follow the steps below:

STEP 1

Open My computer folder. From the list of devices and external disks select removable disk

which represents the contens of the SD card installed in the printer.

STEP 2

Copy previously generated GCODE instruction file to the folder mentioned above.

STEP 3

When the copying is finished, you can disconnect the computer from the printer.

STEP 4

Make sure that the surface of the working platform is properly prepared for printing.

Preparation of the working platform is described in 5.1.

STEP 5

From the main menu select Printout. Select sd. From the displayed list, select the file

defined beforehand. At that moment the head and the working table are reaching

temperatures set before. Heating process can be observed on the screen. When the proper

temperatures of the head and working tables are reached, printing process starts

automatically.

Page 50: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

If all the above has been completed, building of the model starts.

4.9 Print finalizing, removing a model from a working platform

When the device finishes building of the element, remove it from the working platform.

Following the steps below will help to complete the process:

STEP 1

To make the access to the model easier, using Jog from the control panel (see Błąd! Nie

można odnaleźć źródła odwołania.) move away the working table and put it in a

convenient position.

STEP 2

Prepare a flat spatula with a thin blade.

STEP 3

Using a spatula, pry a built-in element at the edges of the base to gradually separate object’s

base from the working platform.

STEP 4

If the object sticks tightly to the working platform, wait until its working area temperature

decreases below 30°C. It will make the object easier to remove.

Page 51: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

STEP 5

If the object sticks tightly to the working platform, remove working platform glass from

printer’s chamber and slowly pry elements’ edges outside the device.

4.10. Finishing processing of a model

In most cases printouts do not need any additional processing. Models that were

constructed with supporting structures are exceptions. To remove them you need to break

them. Be careful not to damage the main part of the printout. Supported elements may

need some additional processing such as cutting to remove all supports’ residues.

If necessary objects made of ABS can be additionally cut or bathe in acetone vapors, which

may help to smoothen the surface and reduce the visibility of printout’s individual layers.

5. Exploitation activities Changing the tape being a coverage for the

working area of the table

Printer’s working platform is made of boro-silicon glass covered with adhesive tape made of

Kapton. The tape is used to provide adhesion of models to the surface of the working table.

To make sure the adhesion Is proper, the working platform surface has to be examined

before each printing. If the tape of the Kapton tape was damaged, its bad part should be

replaced.

Additionally, 3D Printers recommends using so called ABS Juice. There is a packet with ABS

pellet attached to every printer. To make ABS juice, the packet content is to be mixed with

500ml of acetone and allowed to fully dissolve.

The following steps will help to complete the process of working table surface preparation:

STEP 1

Page 52: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

Make sure that table’s heating is turned off and its temperature is below 30°C.

STEP 2

Bring the working glass out of printer’s chamber and slowly place it on the flat surface of the

table.

STEP 3

Remove the old tape and clean and degrease the glass surface. Wait until it is dry or mop it

dry.

STEP 4

Stick a new tape carefully not to leave air bubbles between the tape and the surface.

STEP 5

If you want to achieve even higher adhesion of a model to the platform, mop the surface of

the working platform with a cloth soaked with ABS juice. To make ABS juice, the packet

content is to be mixed with 500ml of acetone and allowed to fully dissolve. Using the

solution, lubricate the working platform covered with the Kapton tape, especially on the

spots where the previous model adhered before and where adhesive ABS layer has been

peeled back while removing the printed model from the platform.

STEP 6

The platform is ready to be re-used.

5.2. ension regulation of an XY axis belt drive

The stretching force of XY axis toothed belt, after some time of exploitation, may be

decreased. To provide high quality of prints, its stretching force should be improved from

time to time.

To do it, follow the steps below:

STEP 1

Make sure that table and head’s heating is turned off and their temperature is below 30°C.

STEP 2

To do it enter the menu pressing OK button on the panel. Select Prepare from the list and

then Motors off confirming with OK button.

STEP 3

Prepare the following tools: 8mm wrench and 4mm allen key.

STEP 4

Loosen all 4 screws of the left and right motor in the same way as it is shown in the picture.

Page 54: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

STEP 5

After loosening the screws, firmly press motor’s main body towards printer’s back cover

(same way as in the picture) to obtain substantial belt tension.

STEP 6

With the motor pressed, tighten all the screws to make the motor stable.

Page 55: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

STEP 7

To measure belt tension grab the belt in the middle part of X-axis and pull it towards you.

The belt with a proper tension, with the motors off (see Błąd! Nie można odnaleźć źródła

odwołania.), should bend by about 2cm, and then cause the movement of the carriage in

your direction.

STEP 8

After tightening all the screws the toothed belt should obtain significant tension. If it

doesn’t, repeat the procedures from STEPS 4-6 for the opposite motor.

5.3. Cleaning and lubrication of a printer

To avoid problems while using the device and to obtain high quality of prints, the printer’s

working chamber should remain clean. It is recommended to clean the chamber using a

vacuum cleaner of a soft-brush-ended pipe. Neither detergents nor water should be used.

Page 56: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

Linear elements need regular lubrication. Small amount of grease should be put on linear

guides (rollers of X, Y and Z axes). It should be spread with the use of a dry cloth. The

remaining amount of grease is to be spread during device’s work.

Printer’s coverage outside parts should be cleaned with a soft moist cloth. It is forbidden to

use solvents, especially acetone, which may damage the surface of varnish, cover’s plastic

and device’s doors.

5.4. Loading a printing material

Reel of material (ABS or PLA) has been attached to Hbot 3D. The reels are labeled (back side

of the reel) and wrapped in thermo-retractable foil. Before starting the device, insert the

filament into printer’s head. When inserting the material for the first time, or when replacing

the material with a new reel of the same type (ABS with ABS, or PLA with PLA), follow the

instruction below.

If you want to change the type of material (ABS for PLA, or PLA for ABS) see 5.5.

The following steps will guide you through the software installation process:

STEP 1

Remove the protective foil form the reel with the material.

STEP 2

Open the working chamber of the device. At the bottom of the chamber there is an oval

element which is used to position the reel in the working chamber.

Page 57: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

STEP 3

Place the reel so the positioning element is in the inside hole of the reel and filament

unwinds same way as in the picture.

Start inserting the filament into a Teflon guiding pipe and continue until you feel resistance.

At that moment filament reaches extruder’s block.

STEP 4

In extruder’s block there is a lever with a bearing which presses the filament towards

extruder’s tracing wheel.

Push the lever to insert the filament between the bearer and extruder’s tracing wheel. Push

the filament until it end will be between bearing and hobbet wheel.

Page 58: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

STEP 5

Turn on the device and enter the menu; select Prepare. From the list select Pre Heat ABS or

Pre Heat PLA, depending on the material type included in the set.

The device starts to heat the head and the hot bed. Since then under no circumstances do

not touch the working area of the table (glass and heating element) or the printing head.

STEP 6

Make sure that there is a certain distance (10mm or more) between the working platform of

the device and the printing head. It allows to press the material freely.

If there is no proper distance, enter printer’s menu by pressing OK on the panel. In the

printer’s menu select Jog, then 10mm Movm, and at the end Move Z– the following actions

are to be confirmed with OK button. The operator panel, for moving the working table in

relation to the working platform, will display. To move the table away from the head, up

arrow must be pressed! At that moment the working table will move away from the head by

10mm.

STEP 7

Page 59: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

The current temperature of the head and the platform is displayed on the screen. When the

temperature reaches the desired level, select Prepare from the menu and then Extrude from

the list. In the next menu there are two options to choose and Extrude 5mm should be

selected. A single press causes a slight turn of extruder’s tracing wheel and filament’s

movement into the head. Extrude 5mm should be pressed regularly until there is an even

outflow of the material from the nozzle. If after substantial period of time, the plastic thread

coming out of the head is not seen, check whether the filament is properly being inserted

into the head – to do so observe the tracing wheel and the clamping bearing of the extruder.

While selecting Extrude 5mm option, the filament should be in the position between the

bearing and the tracing wheel. If you still have a problem with inserting the filament into the

head, see 6.2.

STEP 8

Remove extruded material from head’s estuary using tongs or tweezers so it wont disturb

device’s work. Attention : The material should not be removed without the use of tools

(head’s temperature is over 200°C) as it may cause burns.

At this moment the material is properly inserted into the device’s head.

Page 60: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

5.5. Changing a printing material

When changing the material type , PLA for ABS, or ABS for PLA, we always use the same

procedure. Always use the temperature similar to the working temperature of the material

of higher temperature, that is, the temperature for ABS.

STEP 1

Turn on the device and enter the menu. Select Prepare from the list. Select Pre Heat ABS

from the list.

STEP 2

Wait till the head reaches set temperature. After that, proceed to the next step.

STEP 3

Pressing Retract remove the filament from extruder’s block. To use this command enter

Main Menu of the panel and select Prepare -> Extrude -> Retract 5 mm.

If the material doesn’t move back from extruder’s block, you have to move the lever with

the bearing to release the clamp of the filament onto the tracing wheel. Then remove the

filament pulling it next to the Teflon guide nozzle. Remove the reel with the used filament. If

necessary detach the Teflon pipe guiding the filament. To do this, press on a metal ring of

the quick release plate located at the top of the extruder block and pull the pipe up.

STEP 4

Make sure that there is a certain distance (10mm or more) between the working platform of

the device and the printing head. It allows to press the material freely.

Page 61: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

STEP 8

Extrude the filament until new selected filament’s color appears and is regular. If you

changed ABS for PLA, from printer’s menu select Prepare and then Pre Heat PLA. Then

proceed to STEP 9.

If you changed PLA for ABS, leave temperature set unchanged. The process of filament

replacement is finished. The printer is ready to work with the new material.

STEP 9

When the head’s temperature reaches the level set for PLA, select again Prepare -> Extrude

and then select Extrude 5mm. If the pressing process is going smoothly, the process of

filament replacement is finished. The printer is ready to work with the new material.

6. Problem solving

In this chapter common problems, you may approach while using the device, are described.

Connection with a device missing

If after starting YARRH there is no connection with the device, make sure that:

a) when you use USB connection;

the device is connected to power supply and is turned on

USB cable is connected to device’s USB port as well as to computer’s USB port

USB cable is not damaged

If the problem remains unsolved, quit YARRH, disconnect USB cable from the computer, run

YARRH and connect USB cable to the computer.

Page 63: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

b) when you use Ethernet:

the device is connected to power supply and is turned on

Ethernet cable is connected to device’s Ethernet port as well as the device enabling

network connections ( router, switch etc.)

the device enabling network connections is connected to power supply and turned

on

there is a connection between the computer and the device enabling network

connections

6.2. Filament’s blockage in the extruder’s block

If during manual intrusion of the filament you notice that there is no outflow of the material

from the nozzle:

Check if motor’s shaft, on which the tracing wheel feeding the material to the head is

installed, is moving.

If it is not, start the device again and then start YARRH.

Check if extruder’s tracing wheel is sliding over the filament. It happens when there

is no movement of the filament towards the head despite the tracing wheel work and

when tracing wheel’s prongs are collecting the material.

STEP 1

Stop the current construction process or the manual material extrusion process.

STEP 2

Remove the filament from filament’s block pressing Retract 5mm. To use the command

enter Main Menu in the panel and select Prepare -> Extrude -> BackRetramm.

Page 64: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

If the material doesn’t move back from extruder’s block, you have to move the lever with

the bearing to release the clamp of the filament onto the tracing wheel. Then remove the

filament pulling it next to the Teflon guide nozzle.

STEP 3

After aborting extruder’s work it is necessary to clean the tracing wheel from collected

material to maintain its proper functioning.

Turning the tracing wheel according to the instruction from the previous step, remove the

material from between its prongs till its totally clean.

STEP 4

Remove the filament from the Teflon guide and cut off closing 10 cm to get rid of the part

damaged by the tracing wheel.

STEP 5

If filament’s blockage occurred during printing of the first couple of layers, probably the

printing nozzle is too close to the working platform. If it is, set the position of the head over

the working table again (see 2.3.)

STEP 6

If the platform height is proper, proceed to 5.4. to insert the filament again.

STEP 7

If the nozzle still isn’t passing the material, the most likely reason is the clogging of the head

caused by the ingress of contamination from the outside. It is related to the fact that the no

Page 65: 1. General description 2 2 3 - HBOT 3D - drukarki 3D dla ...hbot3d.com/.../2014/12/HBOT-3D-English_Manual-v5.8.pdf1. General description ..... 2 1.1. Functions..... 2 1.2 1.3. Technical

sufficient cleanliness was maintained in the working chamber. In case of such a malfunction,

9. Glossary

Extruder – the element feeding the printing head with modeling material (filament).

Filament – the wire made of polymer (ABS, PLA, or other), most often it is wound on the

reel. It is 3D printer’s cartridge.

Firmware – device’s internal software which operates its basic functions.

GCode – the list of command for a 3D printer and other devices controlled numerically. In

case of 3D printers it is the set of instructions generated on the basis of a 3D model. Using it,

a 3D printer performs all the procedures needed for 3D model construction.

Hotbed – the heated working table of a 3D printer; it is needed for providing a 3D model

with the appropriate adhesion temperature.

Hotend – the heated printing head of a 3D printer it is needed for polymer extrusion.

Kapton – polymer tape, providing appropriate adhesion of 3D models to the working

platform of a 3D printer.

Tracing wheel – extruder’s element with prongs. Thanks to its construction filament’s

pressure on extruder motor shaft causes a change of extruder motor’s rotary movement for

filament’s sliding movement and as a consequence its pressing into the head

Slicer – Software used to generate Gcode list of commands, slicing virtually a model being

printed into layers in which the working material is consecutively put.

STL – 3D models recording format operated by 3D printers’ software.
