Design Considerations In addition to its primary function, the solution must accomplish the following:

Solve engineering and related requirements:

Provide an effective “restriction of means”.

• Barrier minimum 6 feet in height.• Top of barrier curves inward.• Barrier components (such as pickets)

are a maximum 6 to 8 inches apart.• Barrier covers the entire bridge

span without providing accessible areas.

Stay within wind load tolerances. Not exceed maximum weight loads. Construct secure connection of new

system to existing structure.

Enhance Safety for:Rescue personnelLaw enforcement personnelMaintenance workersConstruction workersVehicle occupantsBicyclists

Design ConsiderationsIn addition to its primary function, the solution must accomplish the following:

Preserve an Historic ResourceThe Cold Spring Canyon Bridge appears to be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (pending concurrence from the State Office of Historic Preservation).

Design recognizes or complements the character-defining features.

Complement Aesthetics: Highway 154 is a designated State Scenic Highway.Views to the bridge from off-site vantage points must be considered.Vistas from the bridge deck and the roadway must be considered. The design must maintain view transparency to the greatest extent possible.Reduce the potential for a “walled-in” perception on the bridge deck.

Environmental Studies are Underway

The environmental document will be available for comments in the Summer of 2008. We are studying:

What’s Next? Complete the required environmental studies. The

environmental process allows Caltrans to identify potential impacts and determine ways to avoid or reduce them.

Refine proposed alternatives and create designs.
