RWV hosted our annual Grandparents’

Breakfast Sept. 12 & 13. Grandparents

enjoyed breakfast with their grandchil-

dren. We served over 200 grandparents!

Thanks to all who came to support their

grandchild!

Student Council 2016-17

The following students were selected to

serve on RWV’s Student Council for this

year: 4th Grade: Caitrin Holman, Carter

Lanclos, Reese Boudreaux, Kylie Watson,

Richard Boykin, Leland Hilton, Beckam

Levens, Kenli Jeanise, Layne McWilliams,

5th Grade: Autumn Buck, Mollie Wood,

Tatum Vanderhey, Ashley Carlock, Gavin

Thomas, Avery Simon, Matthew Steck-

ling, Bryce Watson, Keiara Bland, War-

ren Cary, and Shay Schysm.

In August, Student Council collect-

ed flood relief items for the flood

victims of Louisiana. Thank you to

all that donated! They will be doing

a variety of school and community

projects throughout the year.

Friday Sept. 2nd was a special day at

school. We had a pep rally to select our

4th and new 5th grade students into

their tribe. Each student in grades 4

and 5 is on a special tribe. The tribe

represents the spirit of illumination

(Choctaw), protection (Coushatta), sup-

port(Tunica), and caring (Chitimacha).

Students spun a big wheel to find out

what tribe selected them. They now

earn points for their tribe by doing

homework, good behavior, and AR points.

Faculty members also participate and

earn points for their tribe. Winners will

be announced each nine weeks.

intelligence wins championships.” ~Michael Jordan

Third

Grade

Third graders learned about their shadows! They can tell you what time of day it is just by looking at their shadow!

SPARK

Mrs. Sylvest's 5th grade

SPARK classes have begun a unit of

study about World War 2. They are

also reading a novel written for

young people by Holocaust survivor

Eva Mozes Kor, who was 10 years

old when she was sent to Auschwitz

with her twin sister. Their unit of

study will end with a field trip to

the WW2 museum in New Orleans.

2nd grade students are excited to get

started with our new program, re-

flexmath.com. Students can log in at

school and from home to practice their

fluency! They earn coins by completing

the math facts in each game that can be

spent in the island store once they ob-

tain a green light for the day. As the

students progress through the program,

they open more learning opportunities

and games. The students can play on

the computer or using the available app.

Teacher Spotlight

RWV welcomes 1st grade teacher Mrs. Trina Denton to our faculty! Mrs. Denton is mar-ried with 3 children—Austin (17), Haley (13),

and Wyatt (8). She is a Louisiana Tech alumni and earned her Masters at McNeese. She loves watching football, especially Tech and Saints and will ride ANY roller coaster. Mrs. Denton has been teaching for 12 years.

MUSIC MAKERS have been re-hearsing for three weeks. We have about 53 singers in our choir this year. We are working on music that we will sing during the school year, and we are rehearsing songs specifically for this year’s Christmas program. The choir sounds great, and we all are hoping that we will be able to show everyone how hard we work when we sing in December. Honor chorus forms for 5th grade Music Makers will be sent home at

the beginning of the 2nd nine weeks.

MUSIC Classes: We are having a wonderful time in music this year! The students really enjoy listening to our com-posers, and they have become very good at discussing our composers and the mu-sic featured each three weeks. We have listened to Antonio Vivaldi, Johann Sebas-tian Bach, and Ludwig van Beethoven

during the 1st nine weeks.

Also, we’ve been learning new skills, songs, and singing games in music while practicing familiar songs, games, and known elements of music as well as preparing new concepts and unknown

elements of music.
