Ag Tour 2012 is set for Wednesday, September 19th from noon to 5:00 pm. Planned by the Agri-Business Committee of the Portage County Business Council, you and your business associates are invited to attend.

PRESENTING SPoNSoRS \\

The theme for this year’s event is “Alternative Ag”. The event begins at noon with a picnic lunch and guest speaker, Jeremy Solin from the Central Rivers Farmshed at Wisconsin Public Service Corporation in Plover. After the picnic lunch, a tour of a 300 acre organic farm - Stuczynski Farms will take place. Stuczynski Farms grow row crops, small grains, hay and are in their fourth season of growing organic malting barley for Central Waters Brewing Company. Participants will look at some fall

cover crops, discuss the preparation for next year crops and organic weed control, crop quality and samples of the barley and hard red spring wheat grown this year.

Then it’s off to Central Waters Brewery Company in Amherst to experience for yourself the care taken to brew some of the finest quality products. Today the brewery services over 200 retail locations in Central Wisconsin and has expanded its product line to include eighteen beer styles. Come taste and feel the malted barley and be part of the brewing process. They will show attendees first-hand how they have brewed exceptional beer for more than 14 years. This brewery tour consists of a detailed history of the brewery, walking tour of the brew house cellar, the packaging process and barrel aging warehouse facilities, followed by a tasting in the tap room.

Registration is now open. Cost is only $20 per person and includes tours, bus transportation, picnic lunch, socializing and education. Register soon as space is limited. Casual attire; sandals acceptable.

Leadership Portage County (LPC) participants gathered for their Opening Retreat on Friday and Saturday, August 24 & 25. Participants began by learning about leadership in themselves and leadership in others using Marcus Buckingham’s “StandOut ” and accompanying strengths assessment. Andria Davisson, certified John Maxwell coach and

owner of The HUB3 in Stevens Point, led participants through a discussion of leadership in themselves and in their community on the first day. Digging deeper into the StandOut material on day two, participants were placed into their groups for Class Projects based on their StandOut Strengths Assessment results and given time to use that information to help determine their strengths as a leadership team. Participants also learned more about Portage County’s rich history from local historian, Anton Anday on a Portage County bus tour on day one and fierce Road Rally competition on the second. A team building and experiential learning exercise was facilitated by Stevens Point Public School’s Dave Lockett, focusing on how we communicate, what ‘ties us up’ and how our perceptions can shape our daily work experience. LPC will focus on Project Management and Agribusiness in Portage County during their September session.

Those in attendance enjoyed guest speaker, Dr. Christine Thomas, Dean & Professor of Resource Management at UWSP College of

Natural Resources present “It Began With A BOW, Becoming an Outdoors-Woman”. The event was held on Wednesday, August 29th at the SentryWorld Sports Center – High Court. Special thanks to our Presenting sponsor of the event – Anderson O’Brien Law Firm.

Here are what our members thought of the event:Attending the August POWER Breakfast through the

Portage County Business Council was a wonderful

experience full of great networking opportunity and

a knowledgeable guest speaker, Dr. Christine Thomas

of UWSP and organizer of the BOW program offered

through the University. I attended my first Becoming an

Outdoors-Woman" (BOW) weekend in 2000 and I can’t

say enough regarding what a phenomenal weekend it

was. It provided me with the opportunity to overcome my

fears associated with shooting both a firearm and a bow

and the ability to participate in activities that I had such

an interest in with confidence. The program offered far

more than just outdoor skills workshops. The weekend

was full of camaraderie with women of all ages who

love the great outdoors and desire to dig into hobbies
