BACKGROUND

y Owing to a large demand for separation of seeds from pulp

of sitaphal (custard apple) in Maharashtra, the Central

Institute of Post Harvest Engineering Technology (CIPHET)

has developed a mechanism to extract finer pulp,which

could be easily processed in the industry.

yThe Maharashtra Sitaphal Growers Sangh has requestedCIPHET to device a mechanism for the process.

NEED FOR THE PRODUCT

y This is because growers are failing to meet the demand of the processingindustry- due to the short shelf-life of the fruit and no machines for separation of seeds from sitaphal pulp.

y The separation of seeds has to be carried out manually in villages,which iscostlier and time-consuming.

y Moreover custard apple is harvested in the month ofOctober, (seasonal glut),so processing of the fruit pulp is the best way of utilizing surplus production offruits during seasonal gluts.

y Thiswill help in converting perishable custard apples in to durable form andwill prevent wastage.

y Sitaphal,which is grown under various names across the

world, has a huge demand in India and abroad.

y In recent years, the demand of sitaphal has increased in ice-

cream, desserts and fruits shakes.y It is an unique, exotic dessert product available during the

cooler months

y Indian custard apple is very much in demand in the European

countries from September to January.

SCOPE

Presently, around 15,000 acres of land in Maharashtra is undercultivation of custard apple. The machine for extracting pulp will bevery useful.

The technology can give boost to the consumption of Custard Apple.

It may lead to increase in the profitability of Custard apple growers dueto easier market access and sustainable industry expansion

It can upscale the economy of farmers in dry land areas of Maharashtra.Employment to local people. It will also be a source of assured incometo the farmers of dry land area.

Under domestic market Metro cities, Big retail chains and 5 star hotelscan be targeted.
