Lesson Task

• In pairs, (1 NOVICE, 1 EXPERT), thread up your sewing machine.

• Each person must practise stitching on paper.

Alter this setting to change the length of the stitch that you need on your work.

Takes up the thread from the reel ready for the next stitch.

Stitch Length Selector

Pick-up Lever

You unscrew this component to replace the needle with a new one.

Needle Clamp

These are the small teeth under the pressure foot that move the fabric along.

Feed Dog

This is where you attach the thread to the machine so that it doesn’t slip.

This allows you more control over the needle to do very precise stitching.

Thread Holder

Hand Wheel

This changes the direction of the stitch and allows you to sew the opposite way.

This turns on a light at the side of the machine, reducing eye strain.

Reverse Lever

Light Power Switch

This is where you rest and manipulate the fabric when you are machining it.

This allows you to switch between different stitches.
