A: The simplest explanation is that AMS’s parent com-pany, Speedway Motorsports, Inc., had a race track, therecently purchased Kentucky Speedway, that did nothave a Cup race date. In the past, SMI – as with thesport’s other major track owner, International SpeedwayCorp. – has been able to obtain race dates by purchasingtracks that had them and moving them elsewhere. Thatled to the closing of both North Wilkesboro Speedway andNorth Carolina Speedway in Rockingham.

This time around, no such deal could be made, so SMIhad to move a Cup race from an existing track to get onefor Kentucky. The company’s thinking seems to be that itcan make more money with a race apiece in Atlanta andKentucky than it could with two at Atlanta and none atKentucky.

Atlanta fell victim, losing its March race, which foryears has been plagued by cold winter weather, whichmade for unpleasant conditions for race fans.

AMS president Ed Clark was reluctant to blame theloss of one of the track’s two Cup dates on the weather, but he admitted it was a big factor.

“I don’t want to blame it entirely on the weather, but

you’ve got to say that year-in, year-out, historically, it’sbeen a factor,” he said. “Even if it’s beautiful in the after-noon, it’s cold in the morning, cold for campers.”

Clark also pointed out the irony in the fact that thisyear’s schedule shuffling, which likely also will include ashift of one of Auto Club Speedway’s two Cup dates toKansas Speedway, could have offered AMS a chance tomove its winter date to later in the year. The likely datefor the new Kentucky Speedway race will be in mid-sum-mer.

“If there’s a disappointment in this to me it’s thatthey’re changing the schedule pretty substantially, andthere may have been an opportunity to move out of thefirst week in March, and now we’re not going to get anopportunity to do that,” Clark said.

Clark also pointed out one often-overlooked fact, andthat is that AMS is getting penalized, in a way, because ofits relatively large seating capacity – around 124,000.

“Even with the crowds that we’ve been having over thepast several years, we’d fill up several of the tracks on theSprint Cup schedule,” he said. “It’s not that our crowdsare that bad, it’s just that we have a lot of seats here, as alot of the facilities do. With weather issues and otherthings, it’s been a challenge. The first weekend in Marchis a tough weekend to do an outdoor event in this area.”

And, he said, the Atlanta market is a tough one thesedays for all kinds of promoters. It also doesn’t help thatNASCAR races of late have had trouble filling grand-stands at tracks across the country and TV ratings havetumbled from their highs of several years go.

He said the overall health of the NASCAR racingindustry is “not what it was, obviously.”

NOTEBOOKPoints leaders surge ahead

The points leaders in the Nationwide andCamping World Truck series boosted their mar-gins over their respective runners-up over thepast weekend.

Nationwide leader Brad Keselowski pushedhis points lead over Carl Edwards to 327 atWatkins Glen. Keselowski finished fourthbehind race winner Marcos Ambrose whileEdwards was 33rd after experiencing a blownengine.

And truck series points leader Todd Bodinewon at Nashville Superspeedway while his clos-est challenger, Aric Almirola, finished third.Bodine will carry a 174-point lead intoSaturday’s race at Darlington Raceway.

In his post-race comments, Almirola indicatedthat he thought the points race was essentiallyover.

“If Todd keeps running like that, there’s noth-ing we can do,” Almirola said. “After it was overI told Todd, ‘It’s your year.’”

But Bodine was cautious in his post-raceinterviews, saying he’s not taking anything forgranted, even though he has a sizeable pointslead.

“It can be lost,” he said. “You can never countanybody out. In racing you never know what’sgoing to happen. We just have to keep doingwhat we’re doing every week.

“If we take care of what we do and don’tworry about everybody else, we’ll be just fine.We just can’t make mistakes and put ourselvesin a hole. We get good position on the track, wegot to keep it …

“Those guys are tough behind us and if yougive them a chance, they’ll be right there.”

Track hazards draw attentionElliott Sadler’s nasty crash at Pocono

Raceway, which NASCAR officials acknowl-edged was the hardest hit since data recorderswere placed on the race cars, continued to be atopic of discussion in the media interviews atWatkins Glen.

Driver Jeff Burton said in his weekly sessionwith the media that everyone in the sport needsto be vigilant so that hazards on the trackaren’t overlooked.

He said officials at Pocono were aware therewere problems before Sadler’s crash.

“They said prior to the race that they weregoing to fix it,” Burton said. “It was just one racetoo long. We shouldn’t learn lessons over andover and over, but we’ve got to have the driverswilling to participate. We should be willing to golook at race tracks, pay attention to them.

“There was an opening on the back straight-away at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and I hadnever seen it before until a year and a half ago.Humpy [Wheeler] was still there, and he prom-ised me that it was going to get fixed, and theymade improvements to it. I raced there for 17years and never noticed it. I need to do betterthan that. I need to be looking a little harderthan that. We have to have everybody willingto go do their part.”

There are few Sprint Cupdriver-crew chief combosthat needed a win any

more than Juan Pablo Montoyaand Brian Pattie, who got thatvictory on Sunday at WatkinsGlen International. It wasMontoya’s second as a Cup driv-er and Pattie’s first ever inNASCAR’s elite division. And itcame after the two had verypublic disagreements over theoutcomes of the two previousraces.

In the Brickyard 400 atIndianapolis Motor Speedway, the No. 42 team dominated therace only to lose to teammateJamie McMurray, who took twotires to Montoya’s four and heldon for the win.

The same situation played outagain the next week at Pocono. But this time, there were nolate-race caution flags to forceteams to choose a pit strategy, and Montoya drove away fromKurt Busch and MarcosAmbrose to score the win.

In his winner’s interview,Montoya seemed more relievedthan anything, now that he canput the past two weeks behindhim.

“[The] last few weeks havebeen really frustrating for thewhole team because we’ve beenso close to victory [and it]seemed to keep slipping away,”he said. “To come out and getthe job done the way we did, itwas big. I feel more relievedthan happy right now. It’s beena really hard road in a way. It’sbeen a lot of fun; it’s been frus-trating.

“To finally get that first winfor Brian, I think it’s good. Ithink we can really focus on justgetting the job done …

“I think this will really bringthe team together and bringgreat things for the future.”

Montoya also said a meetingon Saturday, one called by carowner Chip Ganassi, helped too.

He said the meeting “was allabout making sure everybody ison the same page, everybodyhas to do their job, and we cameout today and everybody execut-ed.

“It’s something Brian keepssaying, ‘Keep saving the car, keep saving the car, keep savingthe car,’ and it paid off.”

Montoya said any problemsbetween him and Pattie comeabout because they’re both driv-en to win.

“As competitive as I am, he’sas competitive with the racecar,” he said. “I think we bothcome here every weekend withone goal: win. When the winsslip away, either my fault, hisfault, I think the fault doesn’treally matter. When you gohome empty-handed, it’s frus-trating.

“We have to learn how tomake better judgments, myselfmake better calls when I’m driv-ing, help them make better calls.I think we’re really workingtogether and understandingwhat needs to be done to winthose races.”

Pattie, who was quite emo-tional after the race, said theproblems between him andMontoya weren’t as bad as they

might have sounded to those lis-tening to their radio transmis-sions in the heat of battle.

“When you’re passionateabout winning races at thislevel, the closer we got, theworse it got for our frustrationlevel,” he said.

Even with the Glen win, it’sunlikely that Montoya andPattie will make the cut for theChase for the Sprint Cup, whichbegins after four more races. He’s 19th in the standings, 205points short of the top 12. Andhis teammate Jamie McMurray, who has already won the sport’stwo biggest races, the Daytona

500 and the Brickyard 400along with runner-up finishes inthree other races, is a longshotat best for the Chase. He’s 15thin the standings, 94 points outof 12th place.

Montoya said it’s ironic thathis team’s improved speed isn’thelping them points-wise.

“It’s kind of funny,” he said. “Ithink last year we didn’t havethe pace we have this year andwe made the Chase pretty easy,I thought.

“This year we had two carscapable, easily making theChase, and both cars are out.

“That’s what it is, I guess.”
