60 planes for 60 years

Tim Carter decided to spend his 60th year flying 60 different types of aircraft he’d never flown before.

His pursuit of 60 different aircraft in his 60th year has brought him into everything from a 737 (for which he holds a type rating) to a J-3.

A lot of good people have volunteered their aircraft to the cause, the Fort Worth resident notes.

He recently visited the US Flight Academy in Denton, Texas, to add eight models to his list. With the help of several flight instructors, he logged 2.4 hours of flying in less than four hours at the airport. Most of his flights were just once around the patch. While at Denton Airport, he flew a Diamond 20, Diamond 40, DA 42 Twinstar, Piper Arrow, Piper Seneca, Remos LSA, Cessna 152 and Robinson R-22 helicopter.

The former Air Force and Delta Airlines pilot now flies for Citation Shares. He has logged more than 17,000 hours since 1971.

Carter has until Nov. 1 to complete his goal. So far, he’s flown 33 planes.

“I was awestruck to learn how unstable the aircraft is and how, to keep it flying, you need constant input and diligence.”

— Larry Williams, president, Bal-listic Recovery Systems, Inc., who flew the EAA’s replica “Spirit of St. Louis”

“I have successfully completed my mission at Piper.”

— James Bass, who recently resigned as president and CEO of Piper Aircraft, where he was brought in to turn the company around and make it a “compelling choice” for a new buyer

“We need to restore confidence in the entire workforce.”

— FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt, on the agency’s focus on employee negotiations

“The makings of a flight are not in the levers, wheels, and pedals but in the nervous system of the pilot: Physical sensations, bits of textbook, deep-rooted instincts, burnt-child memories of trouble aloft, hangar talk.”

— Wolfgang Langewiesche, “A Flyer’s World.”

“There are two kinds of airplanes — those you fly and those that fly you. You must have a distinct understanding at the very start as to who is the boss.”

— Ernest Gann

ON HIS WAY TO 60: Tim Carter (in the left seat) flies a Remos LSA with Rick McElroy, chief flight instructor at US Flight Academy in Denton, Texas. The Remos is just one of 60 airplanes Carter will fly this year to celebrate his 60th birthday.

Two passions, one goalFlying Musicians Association takes off

The blending of two passions, flying and music, has led to the birth of a new group called Flying Musicians Association.

Founded in Fort Worth by two pilot/musicians, John Zapp and Aileen Hummel, the group’s goal is to encourage, educate and support these two passions among those who share them.

“I have met several pilots who are also musicians or who share an interest in music,” said Hummel. “One goal of the Flying Musicians Association is to generate the desire and yearning for both among young people. Often, all a young musician or budding aviator needs is encourage-ment,”

“Math, science and music — after years of being associated with musi-cians and aviators I have realized there are many attributes which are shared by both groups,” Zapp added.

“We believe that by flying around the country and visiting music programs we can expose youngsters to the thrill and fascination of aviation.”

The association’s first Fly-In Musicfest is scheduled for Nov. 7 at Fort Worth Spinks Airport (KFWS).

A flurry of new planes and new products debuted on the opening days of AirVenture 2009 in Oshkosh, while one venerable model — the Piper Archer — is on its way back to production.

Piper Aircraft plans to bring back the Archer, with officials noting the company — under its new owner, Imprimis, an investment company based in Singapore and Brunei — wants to be “back in the entry level market.” The 180-hp Archer, which will sell for $300,000, will be available in 2010. It will come standard with the Garmin G600 glass cockpit, which also will be available on several of the company’s other models, including the Seneca V, Seminole and Warrior.

Meanwhile, progress continues on the jet, as the company plans to hire 50 new engineers to accelerate the pro-gram’s development. The jet, which flew at AirVenture for the first time at an air show, has accumulated about 200 hours in flight tests so far. Order book for the jet stands at about 200.

The Icon A5 made its first flying demonstration at the show, on the heels of a “rigorous” flight testing program, according to Kirk Hawkins, president of Icon Aircraft. The amphibious LSA’s

order book stands at 400, with about one-third of the orders from non-pilots, according to Hawkins. “What that means is that there is a large audience of people out there who want to fly and they just need the right products,” he said.

Carter Aviation Technologies debuted its new Personal Air Vehicle (PAV) prototype, the second genera-tion aircraft that demonstrates Carter’s Slowed Rotor/Compound technology, which is a combination of rotorcraft and

fixed wing aerodynamics that features vertical takeoff and landing with high-speed flight. The company plans to offer four designs for sale: a two-place auto-gyro, a two-place compound gyroplane, a four-place autogyro and a four-place compound gyroplane.

Garmin also unveiled a slew of new products, including the G500 glass cock-pit designed specifically for Part 23 Class I/II aircraft; the addition of synthetic vision technology — and other upgrades

— to the G600; and the G3X, a customiz-able glass cockpit for experimentals and LSAs.

Tecnam debuted its P2006T twin engine, four-seat, all-metal aircraft (pic-tured). Powered by two Rotax engines, the high-wing is being marketed to flight schools as well as private owners and can be outfitted with a Garmin G950 glass cockpit or analog panel. Prices range from $425,000 to $510,000, with U.S. deliveries expected to begin next year.

Remos Aircraft has received a “significant” infusion of new capital from Pall Mall Partners, a London-based investment company that focuses on technology. The funds will be used to fund ambitious plans for the LSA manu-facturer, including the creation of Remos Pilot Centers, as well as other efforts to attract more people to aviation.

Former uranium site could be Tennessee’s newest GA airportby meg godleWsKi General Aviation News

Officials in Knoxville, Tenn., have

taken the first step towards recycling an industrial site that used to process ura-nium into a general aviation airport.

The industrial area was closed down decades ago, according to Lawrence Young, president of the Community Reuse Organization of East Tennessee

(CROET), an organization that oversees the redevelopment of industrial sites.

The former uranium processing facility, which covers 1,100 acres, has something in short supply in hilly East Tennessee, according to Young.

“It’s basically a flat, long strip of black top,” he said.

Last last month, the Knoxville City Council unanimously passed a resolu-tion in support of CROET’s efforts to undertake a feasibility study.

“Our next step is to approach the regional airport authority and ask them to partner with us to assist in getting funds to undertake the feasi-bility study,” Young said. “Part of the

study will include whether the market will support the construction of a new airport.”

That could be the easiest part of the project. According to Young, the nearest general aviation airport is 20 or so miles away and located on an island in a river.

“It cannot expand,” he said, “and most of the terrain in the region is hilly. From a strictly physical standpoint, the flat terrain of the former uranium pro-cessing area makes it attractive as a site for a new airport, but that is just one component that we are looking at.”

The feasibility study also will include evaluating how to pay for the

new airport.“We are researching grants for the

construction and the possibility of a partnership with the Knoxville Metro Airport,” Young said. “But that’s off in the distance. Right now the airport is just an idea.”

Young admits that redeveloping a site that was connected to nuclear material presents some public percep-tion problems.

“People worry about safety,” he said. “I can show them reams of data on the safety of the site. We have had industrial facilities on it for 10 years with no ill effects.”

Meanwhile, TCM officials flew the company’s factory turbocharged SR22 to Oshkosh fueled on UL94 unleaded aviation fuel. The flight was the third for the engine, which has now accumulated 20 hours on unleaded fuels.

Lycoming Engines has teamed with the FAA and Swift Enterprises to

research 100SF, a renewable fuel being developed as a possible replacement for 100LL aviation fuel. The goal is to develop a renewable fuel to replace 100LL without requiring modifications to existing engines, officials said. Lycoming is providing the engines for the testing, while the FAA’s Aviation Fuel and Engine Test Facility is performing the testing.

As new administrator changes the way errors are reported

WASHINGTON, D.C. — For nearly three years, air traf-fic controllers have been working under imposed work rules after they failed to reach a contract agreement with the FAA. Now that a new administrator has taken office — and an arbitration panel is in place — are things finally getting settled? Maybe.

The two groups are not eager to dis-cuss the arbitration efforts until there is something positive to report.

However, FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt recently unveiled a change in the way operational errors are reported, saying the names of controllers will not be included on operational error reports sent to FAA headquarters.

“We need quality information,” said Babbitt, “and the best sources of that information are our front-line employ-ees.”

Removing names will allow investiga-tors to focus on what happened, rather than who was at fault, he explained.

The change was met with questions from the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, the controllers’ union.

“We need clarification of it,” said spokesman Doug Church.

What is clear is that the identity of controllers involved in errors will be known at their local facilities, with disci-plinary actions taken and recorded in the controllers’ records.

If this is part of the non-punitive reporting system, it is confusing, Church said. “We need Babbitt to back up his words with his actions,” he said, adding, “we do hope this is an indication of the new administrator reaching out.”

REAUTHORIZATIONThe controllers group is one of

the many organizations that favor the

Senate’s version of the FAA reauthori-zation over that passed by the House. NATCA President Patrick Forrey says the Senate version “addresses so many key issues that affect the safety of the National Airspace System and provides for the advancement of the much-needed modernization of the air traffic control system.”

Both the Senate and the House bills push the Next Generation Air Traffic Control program (NextGen), a goal supported by general aviation interests as well. The Senate version, however, does not include two provisions that are opposed by the Air Transport Association, which represents the major airlines: An antitrust immunity sunset provision; and a provision to raise the cap on passenger facility charges from

$4.50 to $7.The Senate and House versions

now will go to conference, where some changes will be made, with a final ver-sion going to a vote in both Houses. This needs to be done before the temporary authorization period ends in September.

CHANGES AT NTSBTwo members of the National

Transportation Safety Board have sub-mitted their resignations, leaving the way open for President Obama to make appointments.

Board member Kathryn O’Leary Higgins left the board Aug. 3, while Chairman Mark Rosenker said he will stay until replacements are nominated and approved.

Higgins, who joined the board in January 2006, said she is leaving “to pursue opportunities in the private sec-tor.” She previously held positions as Deputy Secretary of Labor, Vice Chair of the Presidential Commissions on Coast Guard Roles and Missions, and assistant to the President and Cabinet Secretary.

Rosenker became a member and Vice Chairman of NTSB in March 2003. Three years later he was sworn in as the 11th chairman. He was nominated by President Bush for a second term in 2007. Before being appointed to the board he was Deputy Assistant to the President and director of the White House Military Office.

We all remember our first flight — the feeling of seeing the world from a completely different perspective, the free-dom of controlling an aircraft through the three dimen-sions of flight, the opportunity to make the world a smaller place by expanding our realm of possibilities.

No matter what aspect of flying moti-vates us to learn how to fly, we all enjoy the challenges and entertainment that aviation provides.

Because of the experiences aviation brings to my life, I’ve made it my goal to share the thrill of flight with others. Through a variety of ways, I have been able to volun-teer my time and dedicate my passion as a vehicle to inspire others to explore the multitude of opportunities in the aviation industry.

As you probably know, the aviation indus-try is actively trying to recruit young people to get involved and sustain the viability of the field for the next generation. With reports that nearly 30% of employees in the aviation industry became eligible to retire last year, it is absolutely dire that we have fresh faces in the field to take over.

Most people don’t realize the abundance and variety of career opportunities that exist in the aviation industry. People are needed in every aspect of the field — from the more intuitive positions like pilots, controllers, mechanics, fixed base operators, and engi-neers, to the not-so-obvious airport managers and the like. The aviation industry allows candidates to find employment opportunities that suit their unique needs and talents, while combining a passion that can rival very few other industries.

Like most industries right now, aviation is suffering from the worldwide economic turmoil, which is something we will recover from in due time. However, finding enough people to take over these jobs when the economy does return is not so easy.

The only way the world of aviation will be successful is if we all do what we can — no matter how much or how little — to help out. Whether it’s participating in an organization like the Young Eagles, providing financial assistance to youth groups, or simply answer-ing basic questions about flight training to an airport visitor, we can and should do our part to increase interest in aviation.

Participating in programs like AOPA’s Project Pilot, EAA’s Young Eagles, Youth Aviation Adventure, Civil Air Patrol, Build-A-Plane, and the FAA’s Aviation Career Exploratory (ACE) Camps help grow and enhance the aviation and aerospace industry.

These programs help instill the passion we all have for aviation in our industry’s newcomers, and provide support in the most difficult and stressful times for people. If you don’t believe me, just read the numerous stories of individuals who have become pilots or work in the industry because of their experiences with one of these programs. Not everyone will walk away with a pilot’s license because of a Young Eagles flight, but many will walk away with a positive experience about aviation.

As the former national spokesman for EAA’s Vision of Eagles Program, it was my job to promote aviation career opportunities to young people around the country. As an expansion to that role, I started working with the FAA in 2004 promoting the benefits of aviation to mainstream America. The experiences I have had, taking Young Eagles for their very first flights and speaking to hundreds of thousands of students about the aviation industry, have been remarkable. I’m very thankful for these opportunities, and proud of the impact that it has had on others. By assisting with these types of programs, you also will experience similar types of joys. Just ask anyone who has received a thank you note from an individual they took for their first flight and now they are involved in aviation. It’s a great achievement.

Perhaps my greatest achievement is co-founding, building and executing the DreamLaunch Tour. Sponsored by my alma mater, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, DreamLaunch has become the FAA’s nation-wide tour dedicated to educating high school students about career opportunities in the aviation industry, while, at the same time, motivating students to follow their dreams and passions in life.

Now in its fifth year, DreamLaunch has visited hundreds of schools, and educated countless students on the opportunities in the aviation industry that they may not be aware of. This past year was our most suc-cessful yet, as the tour visited schools from Central Florida all the way to Anchorage, Alaska. Building on that success, we’re gear-ing for a tour that stops at even more schools next year. You can learn more about the tour at: JamailLarkins.com.

I urge all of you to take action and influence the next generation of aviation. Whether it’s kids or adults, we need to keep our industry growing, even when we are presented with the economic issues affect-ing every company in our industry today. Everything we do can — and will —make a difference.

What happens in the next 20 to 30 years of flight will be completely up to the legacy created by the current generation leading one of the nation’s most vital segments of our economy.

Growing the next generation

OIL ANALYSIS SAVED THE DAY

Re: Paul McBride’s column, “TBO: 2,000 hour or 12 years,” in the June 23 issue: This is absolutely the best article I have ever seen on the subject.

I started oil analysis every 25 hours the day I bought my used C-180. The original engine (which had a “log cabin overhaul” by a very reputable mechanic) went to TBO with no problems.

My “factory reman” replacement from Continental was making a bit more metal from day one, but the reports were quite stable. My mechanic son insisted on cutting each filter open and examin-ing it with a magnifying glass and magnet, in addition to the oil analysis. I always kept the last five used filters for comparison.

At 500 hours, with the plane fueled and loaded for a flight in the morning, I got a call from my analytical service stating the Nitraloy had spiked and to do a compression check. The engine had been running fine with absolutely no indication of a problem. Mag checks were perfect. It was smooth and the power was normal.

We found one drastically low cylinder and pulled it. The exhaust valve stem was found to be shaved down to one half normal diameter by the Nitraloy guide, obviously primed for a catastrophic failure. Oil analysis saved the day, in my opinion.

Now the good part: There was no accident and Continental only charged me for the time flown, although the engine was out of “calendar” time, so I got another “reman” for $10,000 rather than the going $15,000.

WHO SHOULD PAY?

I recently completed my Experimental ama-teur homebuilt aircraft and was ready to have the certification inspection completed. I contacted my local Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) and requested to have one of the maintenance inspectors perform the inspection. The manager denied the request.

I requested a written explanation for the denial, which reflected on staffing and workload issues, and noted that all aircraft certification services were being directed to persons outside the FAA. In other words, I had to hire a Designated Airworthiness Representative (DAR) to perform the certification inspection.

I contacted several other FSDOs in the Northwest to survey their policies. Several responded they can perform certification inspections, but it would depend on workload. They did not have a total denial policy and defer individuals directly to a DAR.

In my opinion a certification inspection should be carried out by the FAA. I understand the economic issues affecting the FAA, however I am opposed to the policy of total denial. The FAA should work with the individual requesting a service and attempt to schedule a visit under mutual agreement. This seems like a reasonable request from a tax-paying citizen of this country.

In the past we would visit our local General Aviation District Office (GADO) to request a written test, a flight exam, a practical test, and a certification inspection. Now we must pay a designee (for all this).

A tax-paying citizen should be given equal consideration when complying with FAA-required regulations, and not have to pay for the services required by the regulations set forth by the FAA.

Museum program teaches kids about flying and restoring aircraft, as well as lifeby JaniCe WoodGeneral Aviation News

About a year ago, Christine Parker had her first-ever airplane ride.

It was one that would change her life.“I was always one of those kids who would look up

in the sky every time an airplane flew over, though I had never actually flown until a band trip last spring,” she said. “After that I guess you could say I was obsessed with flying.”

Talking about that obsession with her friend, Doug Vogel, led her to the Port Townsend Aero Museum at Jefferson County International Airport (OS9) in Washington state, which runs a volunteer program where kids from 12-18 learn to restore vintage aircraft while learning to fly.

“The experience has been amazing,” she said. “I’ve learned a heck of a lot. The very first day I did fabric work. I do it every weekend and I’m getting pretty good at it.”

The lessons learned at the museum extend far beyond how to restore aircraft. The kids also learn about the value of hard work, determination, and striving for perfection.

The program began in 2001 when Jerry and Peggy Thuotte founded the museum based on a youth-oriented volunteer program.

“I had worked with kids for the past 20 years, telling my kids’ friends that if they helped in my hangar, I’d teach them to fly,” said Jerry Thuotte, a retired air traffic controller and United Air Lines pilot.

After he retired and moved to Port Townsend, he got a lot of pressure from friends and relatives to continue his work with kids, as well as his work restoring antique aircraft.

“I knew that if I had enough kids properly trained, I could restore enough aircraft to bring in enough money to build the museum,” he said. “Once you put all the pieces together, you have a puzzle and the centerpiece is this beautiful Taj Mahal.”

What he’s referring to is the museum’s new 18,000-square-foot hangar, which houses a collection of 31 aircraft, including a 1922 Irwin Meteor, a 1935 DeHavilland Queen Bee, a 1928 Travel Air, a Benny Howard Mike pylon racer replica, a 1936 Waco YKS-6, a 1932 Pietenpol Sky-Scout and much more. Most of the planes are airworthy. The ones that aren’t are in the restoration process, with the kids doing a lion’s share of the work.

“It’s a constant training program,” Thuotte said. “Kids come in as early as 12 and then leave when they go off to college or get out of their teens.”

In the last eight years, about 210 kids have gone through the program. Thuotte estimates that 25% of them have continued on in aviation as pilots, engineers, mechan-ics or air traffic controllers. “Many have gone on to the University of Washington, Embry Riddle, Purdue, and the University of North Dakota,” he said.

Parker will start at the University of Washington in the fall, majoring in aeronautical engineering.

“I want to design my own airplanes,” she said, noting she wants to design GA aircraft, not behemoth airliners. “I’m not a fan of big, big, big airplanes.”

Her friend who inspired her to volunteer at the museum also is pursuing a career in aviation.

Vogel, 18, plans to attend Westminster College in the fall, majoring in flight operations. The recipient of a Navy ROTC scholarship, he hopes to be a Naval Aviator.

He started volunteering at the museum when he was just 11, discovering the program through a summer camp.

“It was a way to be in and around airplanes,” he said. “It was an opportunity for me to see if aviation was interesting enough to pursue as a career or hobby. The more I was at the airport, the more I fell in love with not only flying, but all aspects of aviation, from restoration to airport operations.”

RESTORING PLANES The kids are tasked with restoring not only the muse-

um’s vintage aircraft, but also airplanes from customers from around the country.

Taught by adult mentors, they learn everything from rib stitching to fabric covering to fabricating a windshield or restoring a propeller.

Their work not only helps fund the museum, it also helps preserve the dying skills required to keep antique airplanes airworthy, Thuotte said.

“We are inundated with work,” he said, noting restora-tions in process include a J-3 Cub, a PA-12 Super Cub, and a 1929 Bellanca Pacemaker. “We also do a lot of repairs, such as rebuilding the wing of a Stinson Gullwing. We’ve restored 40 to 50 airplanes over the years and they just keep coming.”

But how do airplane owners feel about youngsters

working on their planes?“When we first started, the work came in based on my

reputation,” said Thuotte, who has not only completed 17 restorations, but has also built several aircraft. “But now the work comes in based on the kids’ reputation.”

He tells the story of being at a gathering recently and overhearing two pilots talking about the museum’s contract work. “Those kids are incredible wizards,” he heard one pilot tell another.

“Their work is first class,” Thuotte claimed. “They come here as raw material, so they have no bad habits. They don’t cut corners and they don’t espouse a ‘that’s good enough’ attitude. They all strive for perfection.”

That quest for perfection is critical in helping kids succeed not only in aviation, but in life, Vogel noted.

“It is my firm belief that people will rise or fall to what is expected of them,” he said. “Setting very high expectations in all areas of a child’s life — but particularly aviation — will give the child the best chance possible for success.”

Those high expectations aren’t just for restoration work. Thuotte expects a lot from the kids — and they deliver. If they don’t, they’re out.

FLYING HIGHA child who wants to volunteer must go through an

interview with Thuotte. In that interview, he emphasizes the most important requirement: Commitment.

“They must commit to one day a week during the school year and more in the summer, if their family will allow,” he said. “Priorities are family, school, then job.”

Thuotte keeps an eye on their grades, pushing them to get all As.

“That will help them get scholarships,” he said. “When they leave here, they are going to school.”

He also takes in kids who are required to do com-munity service or have had some problems the past. “The past is the past,” he said. “Once they come through our threshhold, it’s like being born again.”

However, the kids have to follow the rules: Don’t

Learning to fly — and so much more

THE ‘WIZARDS’: Some of the kids who volunteer at the museum restoring aircraft include Christine Parker, left, and Doug Vogel in the cockpit of the Pacemaker and (from left to right in front of the plane) Ross Patton, Nathan Alexander, Alex Helsell, Emma Walker, and Joel Brose.

WHAT’S NEXT?Plans are in the works to build a 6,600-square-

foot shop with room enough to work on eight air-craft at a time. Another building is planned to house a paint booth and fabric shop.

As he looks to the future, Thuotte said he is also on the lookout for somebody “tougher than me” to take over the operations, noting he’s 70 now. But he hasn’t been able to find anybody who can say no, as the museum gets lots of calls from people who want to donate their old airplanes or adults who want to get some flight training in one of the museum’s airplanes.

The Lockheed Vega was the

fastest commercial aircraft of

its day. Amelia Earhart flew NR7952

to two world records in 1932.

First woman pilot to cross

the Atlantic and first non-

stop flight across the U.S.

The Vega was constructed

primarily of wood laminate

and featured hand-operated windshield wipers.

Today with state-of-the-art FFC nitrile rubber fuel

cells featuring autoclave cured seams, an inte-

grated fuel vapor barrier and backed by a “no

hassle” FFC 10-Year Warranty, Amelia could relax

and enjoy the trip without being concerned about

fuel cell problems.

Amelia would have loved our fuel cells.

Remos extends its lead in the LSA category: A new full-carbon-fiber wing system combines low weight and highest rigidity for an almost unlimited lifetime. The higher air-brake-effect of the new slotted flaps allows steeper descent rates and safe short-field landings. Extended luggage space and a useful load of 650 lb handles all the equipment you need for leisure, fun and adventure. Call 1-877-REMOS-88 or visit www.remos.com

Remos: Best in class

One of the most successful manufacturers of the new class of Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) is Remos Aircraft.

The firm began in an old Bavarian farmhouse near Munich in the early 1990s with experimental ultralight aircraft.

From the beginning, the company planned to produce aircraft characterized by balanced flight characteristics combined with superior handling. All this was to be based on famed German craftsmanship, yielding high quality, top-of-the-line products.

The introduction of LSA in the United States, and certification of the Remos GX, have opened enormous opportunities in world markets. The GX is built on the basis of the successful G-3. It offers time-proven strengths like manufacturing quality, excellent performance, best of class in useful load, benign handling characteristics and technical innovations such as new carbon fiber wing and fuselage design, enhanced safety features, extended luggage space, ground-adjustable propeller and night VFR certified.

The Remos G-3 has been a success from the time it hit the market in 1998. That same year, a team piloting a G-3 won the German flying championships in the light aircraft class. In 2000, at the most important European general aviation show, the G-3 was chosen “Aircraft of the Year.”

The key material in the design of a top-class LSA is carbon fiber. It weighs a third less than fiberglass with double the rigidity. However, the material costs eight times more than fiberglass.

Yet, achieving great structural strength and rigidity is not just a matter of the basic material, but also calls for top design and manufacturing know-how so that the material’s benefits really come to the fore. The structural integrity of the Remos carbon fiber cabin is several times better than a metal cabin.

The firm has a North American headquarters, regional offices and distributors in many areas.

Aircraft buying tips from The Plane Exchange

It is easier to buy a plane from an aircraft broker than an individual. A broker can help you arrange financing, delivery, and so much more. An experienced broker can save you time, money and, in some cases, a lot of headaches.

There is a very informative Aircraft Buyers Checklist online at www.ThePlaneExchange.com/how. There, you can learn everything from selecting the model that is right for you to the importance of a title search and why you might want to use escrow.

Designed by aircraft buyers, brokers and pilots, www.ThePlaneExchange.com is recognized worldwide as one of the top places to shop for used aircraft. It is easy to navigate and is up to date and filled with information and pictures to help you make an educated purchase.

Do you need to sell your plane? The logistics of selling an airplane to a buyer in another state can be quite

overwhelming, especially when you start adding pre-buy mechanics, escrow companies and delivery pilots.

Why hire an aircraft broker? Most brokers charge a fee when the aircraft sells. You do not pay upfront expenses.

If you pay by the ad to advertise your plane, your expenses can add up quickly.Domestic sales are slow; the right broker will advertise your aircraft on the

Finding the answer reveals more than the effect of CO2

L a t e l y, I ’ v e received a lot of e-mails from read-ers asking about the environment and the effect of internal combustion engine exhaust on our climate.

One factor is the effect of CO2 on the environment. My understanding is that CO2 is relatively harmless and naturally occurring.

To try to better understand the lat-est concerns about CO2, I contacted a couple of “experts” who work in the environmental area. I found the answers fascinating and wanted to share them, but when I asked permission to quote them, the answer was absolutely NOT.

When I asked why, they answered that they are in the research busi-ness and do not want to risk losing a grant from either side of the prob-lem. In other words, “what answer do you want?” has replaced “what is the correct answer?” as the guide for doing research.

To give you an example how this works, let’s say that the ethanol people give me a huge grant to show that fuel containing ethanol gives as good or better fuel mileage than straight hydrocarbon motor gas. An auto engine operates on the energy content of the fuel that you feed it, so ethanol at 74,000 BTUs per gallon is going to give you a lower mpg than a straight hydro-carbon fuel that contains 110,000 BTUs per gallon. This means a 10% blend of ethanol will, under normal driving conditions, give about 3.3% lower mpg than a straight hydrocarbon fuel.

How would I earn that big grant money? Fuels with 10% ethanol usu-ally have a higher octane rating, so I would find vehicles that require high octane and knock on regular 87 octane fuel. I would then measure the fuel economy of these cars under high-load, high-speed conditions where they experience knocking and the knock sensor kicks in and retards the ignition’s timing. This would reduce the mpg of the cars on the straight hydrocarbon fuel and advance the tim-ing and improve the mpg for the cars on the ethanol-containing fuel. Voila! The people paying me are happy and I have a big pot full of money — never mind that almost no one in the real world will get better mileage.

This problem goes deeper in our society than just research grants. It is especially prevalent in big business and

governments. Say you work for a large auto manufacturer and the president tells you the company needs to build a larger SUV so he can tow his 20,000-lb. boat up to the lake. He would like you to do the market research to show that this vehicle will sell well in today’s market.

You have a choice: You can tell him the truth — that this is a bad idea and you will not be able to give them away at any price — or you can tell him it is a great idea and that the company should start working on it immediately.

If you choose the first option, you will probably be transferred to a dead-end job counting used washers or be unemployed. If you go for the second option, you will get promoted and your

replacement will have to get rid of those boat anchors.

That is the way a country goes until the bottom drops out and then everyone sits around wondering, “what happened?”

Then we will send a pot full of money to “experts” to try and figure out what happened.

What is the answer to the CO2 ques-tions? I am waiting for a big pot full of money before I tell anyone.

be late. No drinking. No horseplay. That structure helps prepare them for the real world, he said.

While the work is tough, the rewards

are great. All the kids have the opportunity to learn how to fly — for free — in the museum’s planes.

“They come in at 12, we give them rides at 13, by 14 they get some dual instruction and by 16 they can wear that airplane,”

he said. “We emphasize stick and rudder skills. After all these years, we have yet to scratch a wingtip — that’s because we focus on stick and rudder.”

There are no radios or electric systems in the training fleet, which includes a J-3, an

Aeronca L-3, two 7AC Champs, a Citabria, a Luscombe, and a Baby Ace. As the kids mature and get more flying experience, they get the chance to fly the museum’s other aircraft. The older kids also help the younger kids with their flying. There are five CFIs at the field — all volunteers.

Vogel has already earned his private ticket, while Parker soloed for the first time in late June in the J-3. She plans to continue her training to get her private license as well.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?Want to inspire the next generation

of aviators? You don’t have to open a museum or start an official program. Just be there.

Give a kid the opportunity to get involved in aviation, Vogel said. And then encourage it, Parker added.

“I had a bit of an issue with my family getting behind me, because no one else in the family was interested in aviation,” she said.

Now that she’s found that encourage-ment, will she pay it forward?

“Definitely,” she said. “After this whole museum experience, I feel I owe it pass it on. This is something I really love.”

Flabob Airport in Riverside, Calif., is kid-friendly.

The historic airport, owned by the Wathen Foundation, is home to the Wathen Aviation High School, as well as Air Academies, week-long programs to inspire kids to get involved in aviation.

Attendance at the high school is expected to double this fall, rising to 120 students.

Part of the increase is due to the addition of middle school classes, school officials note.

This past spring, 12 students graduated from the high school, the first graduation class that had students who started out at the school as freshmen.

The school operates with five teach-ers and a number of volunteers from the local aviation community who provide an aviation slant to many of the courses that are taught, like English and history.

“The students are benefitting from this aviation-rich environment,” said Dr. Arthur Peterson, president of the

foundation. “They see aircraft taking off and landing throughout the days when they are in classes and have learned a lot about the aviation-related businesses on

the field. This has resulted in a commit-ment from quite a few of them to pursue careers in aviation.”

During the summer, the airport hosts

its Air Academies for students in grades 6 through 11.

During the hands-on programs, students learn about weather from a former member of the Apollo Project and history from a former member of the Berlin Airlift. They also have classes on reciprocating engines, jets and rockets. Each student will build and launch a real rocket. The section on theory of flight includes building part of a wing.

The Youth Aviation Adventure pro-gram reached another milestone when it recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the FAA, establishing a collaborative effort to promote aviation with young people across America.

The ceremony took place at FAA headquarters, in Washington, D.C. Signing on behalf of the FAA was Paula

Lewis, assistant administrator for regions and center operations. Signing for YAA were program cofounders Dan Kiser and Steve Wathen.

Youth Aviation Adventure is a program designed to attract young people to aviation as either a career or a hobby. It’s based in

Columbus, Ohio, and currently has five chapters across the country

with several more in the process of forming, according to Kiser.

The program lasts five hours and consists of 10 stations the young people cycle through.

Each station presents an aviation topic, such as aerodynamics, instru-

mentation and careers in aviation. The curriculum for the stations was devel-oped with the help of The Ohio State University.

An estimated 3,000 young people have participated in Youth Aviation Adventure since its inception.

You can’t judge a plane by its popular name

In the beginning was the word, and the world was Flyer — Wright Flyer, that is.

When one creates a new product and starts to sell it, the product needs a name. Before the Wrights began to build airplanes, they were the manufactur-ers of bicycles. Among the names of their bicycle products was the “Wright Flyer.”

The Wright brothers would use the name Flyer until 1912, when they advertised their new machines as the “Wright Flyer, 1912 Model.”

In 1913 an ad introduced the Model “E,” a smaller high-performance machine for exhibi-tion work.

As we trace a quick history of aircraft naming practices, we see that popular names were not commonly applied to aircraft. An exception was the 1909 Santos Dumont “Demoiselle.” The Demoiselle was intriguing. Not only was it advertised in aviation publica-tions, it also was in the popular press with an ad in the March 1910 issue of “Popular Mechanics.”

In the early days, aircraft were given descriptive, functional names, such as Benoist Biplane, Burgess Aeroplane, Sommerville Stable Monoplane, Curtiss Biplane or Queen Monoplane.

This practice of descriptive names would continue up to the start of World War I with Biplane, Hydroaeroplane, Hydro, Flying Boat, Tractor, and Aero Yacht.

With the great increase in the production of aircraft during the First World War, the marketing of aircraft continued with descrip-tive names, such as the Aeromarine for an Army trainer or the Military Tractor from Curtiss.

Interest in aviation grew greatly during World War I. A search of “The New York Times” database reveals the number of articles on aviation grew from 288 in 1914 to almost 1,000 in 1919.

There also were a large number of pilots trained in the war, with more than 15,000 cadets sent for flight training. It was thought that many of these pilots would want their own airplanes.

It also was thought that aviation would prove useful in many ways, including private flying, business flying, carrying mail by air, and the transport of passengers. It was in this environment that production of the first private and commercial aircraft began in 1919.

The buying and selling of aircraft would turn out to be a complicated business. Unlike

the automobile industry, the airplane industry was not as widespread or well known. Without military contracts, the aircraft companies had to learn about branding, marketing and advertising.

Curtiss was the first one out of the gate with the Oriole, Eagle and Seagull.

Gallaudet had the Liberty Tourist Plane, Horace Keane the Ace, and Lawson the Air Liner. In 1920 Douglas had the Cloudster, Laird the Swallow, Dayton-Wright the Chummy, and Stinson the Greyhound.

Though U.S. manufacturers did start to use popular names for their aircraft in the 1920s, they still mainly used numeric or alpha-numeric designations for their products. “Jane’s All the World’s Aircraft from 1919 to 1939” lists more than 1,400 different models of U.S. aircraft in its annual compilations. Of those, fewer than 500 carried popular names.

As befits an object traveling though the air, there were more than 30 popular names with the word “Air” in their names, including Air Express, Air King, Air Sedan, Air Scout, Air Trainer, Airmobile and Airster. Some of the names using the word “Air” referred to exist-ing forms of transportation, such as Airboat, Airbus, Aircar, Air Coach, Air Cruiser, and Air Yacht.

The word “Bird” also was used as a source of names, such as Birdwing, Blue Bird, Red Bird, Humming Bird, Sea Bird and Thunderbird. Particular types of birds also lent their names to aircraft, such as Condor, Falcon, Oriole, Robin, Seagull, Sparrowhawk, Puffer and Tanager.

Starting in the late 1930s, many companies started a tradition of naming their aircraft in a related series to distinguish themselves from their competitors.

For example, Grumman often chose names ending in “cat” for its fighter aircraft, includ-ing the Wildcat, Hellcat and Tigercat. For its seaplanes it used the names of water fowl: Duck, Goose, Widgeon and Mallard.

The Bell Co. used “Aira” as a common thread in its names: Airabonita, Airacuda, and Airacobra.

British companies had a penchant for alliteration, using the same first letter in the aircraft name as in the name of the company, which brought us the Bristol Blenheim, Brigand, Bulldog, Beaufort, and Brownie; the Handley-Page Herald, Hereford, Hampstead, Hampden, Halifax, and Hannibal; and the Hawker Hart, Hartebees, Hurricane, and Henley.

Just as you can’t judge a book by its cover, you can’t judge an airplane by its popular name. In 1937 more than 160 different models of aircraft were offered for sale, but only a handful had popular names given to them.

It might have been more important to use numbers that showed the development of new models, such as Stinson. Its SR series would run to SR-10 by 1939.

THE BEGINNING OF SOMETHING NEW: This 1913 ad introduces the Wright Model “E” for exhibition work. Before that, the planes were called the Wright Flyer, plus the year of the model.

POPULARITY CONTEST: This 1909 ad for the Santos Dumont was the earliest use of a popular name for an aircraft. Unlike the Wright Flyer, this one was unencumbered by patent rights.

FROM SPORTING TO SEAGULL: This 1912 ad for a Curtiss flying boat touted the airplane as a sporting machine. After the First World War, the Curtiss Co. would advertise its newer flying boat as the Seagull.

MARTIN TO BOEING TO WRIGHT: The Martin Co. advertised its Army Military Tractor for commercial sales. One of its customers would be William Boeing. Later Martin would become part of the Wright Co.

Contaminated fuel leads to crashThese August 2007 accident reports are

provided by the National Transportation Safety Board. Published as an educational tool, they are intended to help pilots learn from the misfortunes of others.

Aircraft: Piper Super Cub.Location: Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska.Injuries: None.Aircraft damage: Substantial. What reportedly happened: The

pilot was attempting to land the tundra tire-equipped, tailwheel airplane at an unimproved, off-airport site. During the base leg, the engine lost power. The pilot initiated an emergency descent. The airplane collided with terrain.

The airplane’s owner reported that he had observed the preflight inspec-tion, and watched the pilot sump the fuel tanks, finding a small quantity of water in the tanks.

While inspecting the airplane after the accident, the owner said he found water in the airplane’s gascolator, carburetor and fuel lines. He said the airplane was fueled from drums with filters, and it had rained during the preceding days. He said he suspected water-contaminated fuel was the cause of the engine stop-page. After refueling the airplane with clean fuel, the engine started and ran without any problems.

Probable cause: The pilot’s inade-quate preflight inspection, which resulted in a loss of engine power during approach due to water-contaminated fuel.

uuu

Aircraft: Aviat Husky A-1B.Location: Moab, Utah.Injuries: None.Aircraft damage: Substantial. What reportedly happened: The

pilot positioned the airplane at the south-east end of the turf runway. During the takeoff run, he veered to the left edge of

the runway centerline to avoid a patch of mud. Just before rotation speed, the left main wheel got caught in vegetation and uneven ground at the edge of the runway. The pilot cut the power and applied full right rudder, but the plane continued to turn to the left off the runway until the right wing tip hit the ground, and stopped the airplane.

Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain directional control, which resulted in a ground loop.

uuu

Aircraft: Cessna 206.Location: Lovell, Maine.Injuries: 1 Fatal, 1 Serious, 1 Minor.Aircraft damage: Destroyed.What reportedly happened: The

amphibious floatplane flew to a lake about 15 minutes from the departure point on a sightseeing flight. The pilot intended to do a water landing. The airplane was equipped with an amphibious landing gear position advisory system. The aural announcements can be canceled by pressing an annunciator light. According to the passengers, as they approached the water, they recalled hearing a male voice speaking. They were not sure what it meant, but then they saw the pilot push a button. The landing gear was in the extended position during landing. When the airplane touched down on the water, it bounced and immediately nosed over, killing the pilot.

Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to retract the amphibious floatplane’s landing gear during a water landing.

uuu

Aircraft: Cirrus SR22.Location: San Diego, Calif.Injuries: None.Aircraft damage: Minor. What reportedly happened:

According to the pilot, his landing

approach was low, so he added power. Upon touchdown, the airplane bounced. He increased power but did not do a go-around. The Cirrus bounced even higher. The airplane touched down a third time, and the nosewheel collapsed.

Probable cause: The pilot’s improper recovery from a bounced landing, which resulted in porpoising and collapse of the nose landing gear.

uuu

Aircraft: Cessna 310.Location: Brownsburg, Ind.Injuries: None.Aircraft damage: Substantial. What reportedly happened: Upon

approaching the destination airport, the pilot was cleared to descend to 3,000 feet and advised of construction equipment on the airport. The pilot reported he had the airport in sight and closed his instru-ment flight plan. He reported shortly after that the right engine began to sput-ter and lose power. He wasn’t sure if he could make it to the airport. He saw the nearby highway and decided to land on it because it was relatively empty due to road construction. The touchdown was normal but during the rollout the right wing tip tank hit a construction road grader. The tip tank, wing ribs, and aileron were substantially damaged.

Probable cause: The pilot’s poor in-flight planning to make an off-airport precautionary landing and his failure to maintain clearance from the construction equipment during the landing roll.

uuu

Aircraft: Mooney M20J.Location: Chesterfield, Mo.Injuries: None.Aircraft damage: Substantial. What reportedly happened: The

pilot had just landed and was anxious to clear the runway because another airplane

was behind him for landing. He exited the runway at the first available taxiway. He reported that he thought the taxiway intersected the runway at 90°, but it actu-ally was a high-speed taxiway for landing aircraft from the opposite direction on runway 8R. The airplane went off the taxiway and hit an airport sign.

Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain directional control while taxiing after landing.

Around the world flight, electric aircraft just a few signs of maturity

As this is written, the aviation world is again buzz-ing about Oshkosh, or as EAA now prefers, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh.

By the time you read this, the show will have just ended (look for full coverage of AirVenture in the next issue of General Aviation News).

The LSA world was exceed-ingly well represented at the big show. With a significant new grounds layout, things didn’t look exactly the same — and that’s a good thing. Once the vast majority of attendees walked through the new main gate, they were greeted by two major producers of LSA: Flight Design (of CT fame) was immediately on the right, while Cessna was on the left. (OK, Cessna makes more than LSAs and isn’t actually in LSA production yet, but it’s coming as certainly as tomorrow’s sunrise, says the Wichita giant.)

All over the Oshkosh grounds, people found LSA. They were in seemingly incongruous display areas as some were kit builders and some just entered the business in the last few years and were wherever they could find space.

The new LSA Mall — a mere 500 paces from the main gate down the new northeast paved walkway — hosted a collection of LSA, making comparisons a bit easier.

LSA Malls have been a big hit at air shows such as AirVenture and Sun ’n Fun. Look for one at your favorite air show.

AROUND THE WORLDNormally I don’t write about record attempts or

exceptional flights until they are completed — and even then only if they are significant. Too many grand voyages end prematurely.

But I’ve known Mike Blyth for decades and he’s already accomplished several daring flights. For example, his South to South expedition went from the southern tip of South America up through the USA across the Atlantic through Europe and back down to

South Africa, all in weight-shift trikes. So if Blyth says he is launching an Around the World

Expedition, we need to pay attention. Blyth and his busi-ness partner James Pitman left South Africa July 17.

The trip is unusual in a few ways. One, their Sling LSA — from the business the two aviators co-own called The Airplane Factory — has just completed flight testing. Secondly, this flight will take place near the equator, requiring some very long legs over water. Third, they will go west around the globe — most go east.

The duo will make their 28,195-mile flight in the new D6 Sling, except they’ve modified this airplane to hold 118 gallons of fuel (about 24 hours worth!). A regular Sling will carry 29 gallons of fuel. Cruising at about 115 knots, they’ll have to log more than 200 hours to get back home.

NOW ARRIVING FROM SHANGHAITwo Chinese delegates attended ASTM meetings

in Freidrichshafen, Germany, in April, the first time the nation has been represented. Those reps indicated they believed ASTM acceptance in China may not be far off.

Meanwhile, Shanghai-based Yuneec is moving for-ward — and upward.

Yuneec’s E430 was featured at AirVenture, along with a distinctly American design: the Flightstar Spyder (single place, Part 103-capable ultralight) fitted with a Yuneec electric motor.

Using a six-battery setup on its two seater, Yuneec expects 1.5-2 hours of flight and, with such an installa-tion, payload is a respectable 400 pounds even with a 45-foot wing span. A 10-battery setup may fly 2.25-2.5 hours.

The LSA is “designed to be simple to use, easy to fly and with virtually zero vibration,” according to Yuneec officials. “It’s very smooth with low noise, no emissions, no fuel, extremely low maintenance and it’s environmentally friendly.

“Charging times of three hours for as little as $5 make electric a low-cost way to fly,” officials add.

On June 20 at an airfield north of Shanghai, the E430 performed two flights of around 15 minutes and did a series of basic test maneuvers. Under full power the E430 rolled 260 feet, rotating at 40 mph. A climb rate of nearly 1,400 fpm was achieved during the second flight. Top speed in level flight was 94 mph.

STEADY CHANGES ADD UP TO THE MAX

Evektor’s SportStar became the first-ever Special LSA a little over four years ago, a distinction no one can ever take away from the Czech company.

Yet that exclusive title has not encouraged the com-pany to rest on its laurels.

The SportStar was one of the first success stories gaining entry to the GA flight school market.

While Evektor has not re-certified its airplane (like Flight Design and its CTLS, Remos and its GX, or TL Ultralight and its Sting S3), the design has, nonetheless, changed.

At Oshkosh, Evektor launched its Max model (pic-tured above) in two variations. The SportStar Max BT (for “basic trainer”) is the entry model, fleet priced at $110,000.

Flight schools that focus on instrument training may opt for the $155,000 Max IFR model, which comes equipped with the certified Rotax 912S (different than the ASTM-compliant “ULS” version).

The Max IFR is the first LSA that is Part 23 instru-ment compliant for IFR IMC flight, and can be used to train students up to and including a commercial with instrument rating, according to Evektor officials.

For personal use, SportStar has some enviable num-bers to go with its cooperative handling. According to Josef Bostik, president of Evektor Aircraft, Inc., “Max can carry two persons in its 47-inch-wide cockpit plus a week’s supply of baggage at 110 knots for nearly 800 miles non-stop.”
