Unit 1 at Susquehannais brought back on lineBy Patrick Sweet

    Staff Writer

PPL brought Unit1 of theSusquehanna Nuclear PowerPlant back on line Wednes-day after flooding forced theutility to shut it down forroughly 20 days.

An estimated 950,000 gal-lons of Susquehanna Riverwaterflooded thebasementofthe plants turbine buildingon July 16. Thewater flowedfromhatchesthatallowaccessto the units condenser where the river water coolssteamleavingthe turbine.

During theshutdown, PPLrepaired the circulating watersystem and assessed equip-ment in theturbine building, plant manager Jeff Helselsaidin a news release. The damageforced PPL to bring in extrahelp to dry and repair equip-mentshortlyaftertheflood.

In addition, all the floodwater was stored in tanksand tested several times forradiological and industrialcontaminants.

Everything met all thefederal and stateguidelines,PPL spokesman Joe Scopelli-ti said. After passing tests, the water was returned tothe river.

Though Unit 1 is backonline, itis operatingat only 16percent, according to a NRC

    daily statusreport. Theplant

willgo through normaltestingasitsbroughtup to fullpower.Ittakesa littlebit of time,

Scopellitisaid. Citing the com-petitive energy market,Scopel-litiwouldnot saywhenexactlythe utility company expectstheplant tobe atfullpower.

Scopelliticouldnot specifyhow much money the shut-downcost the company. Fluc-tuating energy prices makeit difficult to pin down exact-

lyhow much thelossof morethan 1,100 megawatts of elec-tricalproductionequals.

    If the financial impact ofthe outage is material infor-mation, Scopelliti said,PPL will file a report witht h e U S S e c ur i t ie s a n dE x ch a n ge C o m m is s iondescribing the cost and theanticipated effect on PPLCorp.searnings. If its mate-rial information, it wouldhaveto be made public.

According to PPLs mostrecent quarterly report filedwith the exchange commis-sion, the corporation hasinsurance to cover propertydamage to... nuclear generat-ing stations and coveragefor the cost of replacementpower during prolonged out-ages... caused by certainspecified conditions.
