Painting the trolley has been about a 10-week task, and when finished it will be signedunderneath by Arwen, Ron, and thesuccessful bidder.
Arwen sees the rock pool theme asbringing a bit of the outdoors inside for thechildren stuck in the hospital.
The quality of the artwork on the trolley isright up there with Arwen's canvases, andshe says it was "worth putting the effort in forkids to appreciate the art."
"As much as the kids will enjoy it, it will bean adult donating it, so it must appeal toadults as well."
She also wanted a design that wouldshow up well in photographs, as that is howpeople bidding for it in the auction will see it.
At the time of writing, the date for theauction was not known.
Helensville artist Arwen Flowers isputting the finishing touches to a projectthat has a close personal meaning forher.
For the past couple of months shehas been painting a rock pool design on achild's trolley, which is to be auctioned toraise money for the Starship children'shospital.
The trolley project was the idea ofAucklander Ron Frost, who made fourtrolleys and then approached artists topaint them. The right to donate eachtrolley to Starship will be auctioned onTrade Me, with the trolley and 50 percentof the money raised at auction going tothe hospital.
Ron says his son Luke is only alivetoday because of the treatment hereceived at Starship Hospital.
As soon as Arwen heard from Ron,she knew she had to be one of the fourartists. She had spent three months living atStarship with her newborn first son Griffin,now 15 and healthy, and like Ron will beforever grateful for the care her childreceived at the hospital.

Vo l u n t e e r s f r o m 4 6 c o m m u n i t yorganisations in Rodney were honouredrecently by the Rodney Local Board.
Each volunteer group nominated arepresentative for the award. Volunteerscame from a broad range of communitysectors including the arts, environment,sports, residents and ratepayer groups andhall committees.
“Every day volunteers exemplify a can-doattitude and a cheerful willingness to dowhatever it takes to help others," saysRodney Local Board chairperson BethHoulbrooke.

They say good things comein twos, so Helensville twinsKaea and Elaine Wihongi-Johnson should have doublet h e f u n a t l o c a l H I P P Ymembers.
The four-year-old twinsrecently joined the HIPPYprogramme and are lovingdoing fun activities with theirmum Bonnie.
Their HIPPY tutor visits thefamily in their home to roleplaythe weekly activities so Bonniecan easily teach her girls theHIPPY work over the followingweek.
Kaea and Elaine will go toHelensville Primary when theyturn five. HIPPY is a two yearprogramme which supports parents to betheir child’s first teacher in their preschoolyear and also their first year at school - so thetwins will still be doing HIPPY when they startschool.
Bonnie also goes to fortnightly groupmeetings where she meets other mums,
I know it's winter, but....We seem to have had rain almost every day for about the past six weeks, making it surely
one of the wettest winters in memory. Spare a thought for our poor local farmers, who areslogging through acres of mud to feed their cattleeach day. Hay is getting trampled into the mud andwasted, stock are wading around up to their knees inplaces in sloppy brown sludge. And for the dairyfarmers, calving is underway in far from idealconditions.
Luckily it has generally been fairly warm so far,and there has been a bit of grass growth to help thingsa little. Still it's pretty disheartening for land owners tosee their pasture churned up by livestock and farmequipment. Roll on spring and summer!
It was pleasing to hear about Rodney Local Board's recent community volunteer awards(see page 1). As I've mentioned before on several occasions, volunteers are the lifeblood ofour community organisations, and their efforts usually go unsung. So kudos to the localboard for shining a light on the valuable work these folk do in our community.
Finally, I urge you all to book tickets for the play 'Te Waka Huia' which will be performed inHelensville late next month (page 4). It sounds really interesting, and will help bring to light ahugely important piece of our district's history.

Merle took over the day-to-day tasks ofrunning the show from David van Dam onMonday,August 1.

management.For the past four years, she has worked
for Wet 'n Wild Slides, a Franklin-basedbusiness specialising in inflatable waterslides, which as well as hiring out slides runspop-up water slide events, which wereMerle's responsibility to organise.
Prior to that, she workedfor Fairfax media, firstly as apho tog raphe r w i t h theFranklin County News andlater moving into advertisingand marketing.
Merle also organised twoPukekohe-based weddingexpos in her spare time,which she says was "a lot ofwork".
Merle actually has adegree in photography, butnow prefers to keep that as ahobby.
" I wan t to do i t f o renjoyment, not because Ihave to," she says, addingthat she has been takingphotos since she was little.
H e r p h o t o g r a p h ybackground may come in handy with her newA&P Show role. She already has an idea forpeople to be able to enter the show'sphotography section digitally, and to seek asponsor to provide free printing of theentries. Show photography entries havefallen in recent years, largely because fewerpeople are printing the photos they take.
Merle, who lives in Stanmore Bay withher 5-year-old son Logan and her parents,visited the Helensville A&P Show for the firsttime this year, though she didn't check outthe indoor exhibits. That's something she iskeen to learn about.
She was impressed with the advertisingfor our local show, and says it was seeingsigns on the side of the road promoting theshow that convinced her to visit.
Merle is already contemplating puttingher negotiating skills to use to try to drum upmore sponsorship for the show, and has anidea for a time capsule competition to getlocal school children more involved in theshow.

A locally written andproduced play about animpor tan t bu t l i t t l eknown piece of NewZealand history is aboutt o h a v e i t s w o r l dpremiere.
'Te Waka Huia' is ap l a y w r i t t e n b yHelensville local NaomiBartley. It is a fictionalstory, which is inspiredby the Brynderwyn buscrash of 1963 whichkilled 15 people.
Many of the victimsw e r e f r o m t h eHelensville area, and tothis day it remains NewZealand’s worst roadaccident.
Last year some of the whānau membersof those who died or were injured attended apublic reading of the script. Among theaudience was Leigh Bosch, who lost fourgenerations of women in her family.
She says at the time the tragedy was soimmense many whānau struggled to dealwith their loss, and she believes the play willoffer some healing to those still hurting.
“Many of my family members who wereat the reading were in tears, because theplay came out with emotion and let people letgo,” says Leigh.
The play begins its season on Thursday,August 17 at Te Pou Theatre in New Lynnbefore going to Mangere, then on a tour ofNorthland that loosely follows the originalroute the bus travelled from Waitangi toHelensville, with shows at Maungaturoto,Rawene, Kerikeri, and Whangarei.

theatre to communities who don’t often getit.”
Playwright Naomi says another intentionof the tour is to gather collective memories ofthe accident, “for instance, from the firstresponders from Maungaturoto and thehospital staff from Whangarei."
But the performances she’s most lookingforward to are the two final shows on Friday,September 29 and Saturday 30 at KaiparaCollege in Helensville.
“This project started nearly five yearsago after I had the opportunity to talk to twolocal survivors from the crash, Louis andPirangi Nathan,” she says.
“I have always wanted this play to honourtheir story and perhaps provide a healingspace for other local whānau who have livedwith the loss all their lives.”

A quilting display by Town and Country Quilters Waitoki will feature at the Waitoki marketon Saturday,August 12 from 8.30am to midday.

37 teams of students from westAucklandprimary schools took part in the NorwestMathex competition, held at Kaipara Collegeon Tuesday, July 25.
Local Years 5 to 8 children fromHelensvil le, Parakai, Waimauku andWoodhill schools were joined by pupils fromHare Krishna, Hobsonville, Huapai, MarinaView, Massey, St Pauls, Taupaki andWaitakere schools.
This is the third yearthat the event has beenheld.
The competitions wereheld in three age groups -Years 5/6, Year 7 and Year8, with certificates andtrophies awarded for eachc o m p e t i t i o n . T h ecompetitions were won bythe first team to reach 100points, or the team with thehighest score after 30minutes.

Locals selling a property can now helpraise significant funds for the HelensvilleA&P Show at the same time - and without itcosting them a cent.
The Royal Agricultural Society (RAS),which is the governing body for all A&Pshows in New Zealand, has partnered withNew Zealand's biggest real estate company,Harcourts.
Now, when locals make initial contactwith the Helensville branch of Harcourts tosell their property, they can complete a formto nominate the Helensville A&P Show astheir preferred recipient. When the propertysells, Harcourts will give $500 to the RAShead office, $400 of which will then bepassed on to our local show.
The money is not deducted from the saleprice - it is donated by Harcourts.

Tom Rutherford, Harcourts nationallifestyle and rural manager, says since thenationwide scheme started in April, therehave already been a number of referralsaround the country.

"Would I go back? I think I've been thereand done that," says Helensville vet MarkAnderson.
Mark and wife Maureen recentlyreturned from three and a half months livingon the remote Outer Hebrides islands off thecoast of Scotland, and while they both reallyenjoyed the trip, Mark jokes that he won't bebuying a holiday home there.
"It gave us a real appreciation of what it'slike to live there.
"We didn't realise how isolating living onan island is - you need to take a ferry to goanywhere [on the mainland] and then a longdrive."
Maureen agrees, saying it "makes youappreciate your own country."
The far-flung islands provided plenty ofchallenges. For Mark it was a workingholiday, acting as a stand-in vet at a practicebased on the island of North Uist - and hewas thrown in the deep end, with the island'sother vet off on sick leave for the first threeweeks.
While Mark was working, Maureenlooked after Mark's 84-year-old fatherDavid, who loved the holiday. They wereable to drive around the islands - it was a 20minute drive to the nearest store - and theyboth took lessons in the local Gaeliclanguage. Mark, however, says he didn't

the islands, but says it was always verywindy.
Farm l ivestock on the is land ispredominantly big Limousin cattle, whichMark says are "really not the right cattle forthe environment", and Scottish black facesheep.
He says the typical farmers - known ascrofters - are more like lifestylers here, oftenonly owning 10 cattle and maybe 30 sheep,and also holding down a job.
There is big concern, he says, about theeffects Brexit might have on the farmsubsidies which are the only way to makefarms financially viable.
All farming is on the western side of theislands, with the eastern side mostly peatbogs. Peat is still cut for burning as there arevirtually no trees anywhere on the islands.
The islands also have a large fishfarming industry, mainly salmon farming inboth the fresh and saltwater lochs.
The other major concern among theislanders is rising sea levels. The OuterHebrides, which consist of five main islandsstretching 100km from north to south andlinked by a central causeway, are extremelyflat and threatened by potential sea rises,

This winter has been one of the worst for a few years for influenza-likeviral illnesses, and this has meant our duty clinic has been extremely busy.It helps if you can phone and speak to our nurses first so we can bettermanage the flow of patients and what times people come in. When peoplewalk in unannounced they will of course be seen, but they may be waiting awhile at this time of year.
There are various strains of influenza virus and they keep changing toget past our immune system. The influenza vaccine contains the strainsthat the World Health Organisation feels are the likely ones to be hitting uson any given year.
Influenza is a viral illness, and produces symptoms of muscle aches, fevers, headache,cough and runny nose - similar to the common cold but much worse. People often have tostop work and go to bed, and it affects the chest rather than just the throat and nose. It lastsfrom three to four days to sometimes a bit longer, and being a viral illness means antibioticswill not make a difference.
Like any viral infection, influenza must run its course and the main treatment is symptommanagement. Rest is key; the body is trying to fight the infection, and continuing to work canaffect its ability to overcome the infection, as well as spreading it to colleagues.
Paracetamol is good for pain control and high temperatures. Keeping up fluid intake isviral too, as you lose more fluid during a viral illness.
On a different note, Cupcake Day is on Monday, August 14. It is to raise funds to build aNorthern SPCA in Hobsonville. Some of our staff - Marina, Julie and Angela - will be sellingspecial cupcakes around Helensville businesses to raise money. Gluten free cupcakes willbe available.

Aconnection with land is the theme of anexhibition of new work by Filani Macasseytitled 'Earth Day Continuum', on now at theArt Centre in Helensville.
Filani, a founding member involved inthe set-up and running of the art centre,recently moved to Kaiwaka after many yearsof involvement in the Helensville artcommunity.
She started lookingat earth as a medium forh e r a r t w o r k a f t e ra t t e n d i n g a n E a r t hBuilding Association ofNew Zealand tour in2015.
“Getting my handsback in to the ear threminds me so much ofchildhood play - mud piesand mud fights,” saysFilani. “I think if youhaven't experienced thisduring your childhood,you've missed out onsomething essential inl i f e , t h i s b e i n g aconnection to nature, an abandonment ofinhibitions.”
Filani's new artworks use materialssourced from the earth – paper mulberry
fibre from Fiji; natural mud pigments fromNorthland and Fiji; charcoal; traditional dye;and printing inks. The natural elements aresourced from regions to which she feels aconnection.
“I managed to bring red mud back from arecent trip to Kadavu Island in Fiji, where ourvillage and family land is.”
The overall concept of this body of herwork highlights ideas of space, time,utilisation of raw materials and a personalform of map and mark making.
Fijian-born Filani is a graduate of ElamSchool of Fine Arts in Auckland. She hasbeen involved in many community artinitiatives and has exhibited in New Zealand,Fiji and Europe. Her work is inspired by theduality of having been born in Fiji and livingmost of her life, from the age of six, in NewZealand.
“I suppose it is a way of creating anindividualistic identity,” she says.
After travelling around South Americaand Cuba, she moved to Kaiwaka in October2015 and is currently setting up a studiothere. Fi lani recently completed aninternship at the Geoff Wilson Gallery, and isthe coordinator of the newly-opened OWLCommunity Hub in Wellsford.
Her Earth Day Continuum exhibition is inthe Media Room at the HelensvilleArt CentreHelensville until 26 August. Gallery openhours are Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pmand Saturday 10am to 2pm.

Helensville Museum will hold its annualTrivial Pursuits night on Friday,August 11.
Funds raised at the evening will gotoward the renovation of the museum'sWaitoki School 'Sunshine' classroom, whichstill needs work to bring it back to life as anexhibit showing school life in the early days,as well as housing the museum's extensivecollection of old school photos.

A world leading expert in breastfeeding is the special guestspeaker at a conference being held at Te Whare Oranga ō Parakaithis month.
Around 80 people have registered for the sold-out, day-longworkshop being hosted by the Helensville Birthing Centre.
The guest speaker is Catherine Watson Genna, a lactationconsultant from New York. Others taking part are midwives,lactation consultants, osteopaths, GPs, Plunket nurses, and auniversity lecturer. Most are from Auckland, but some are travellingfrom as far away as Hawke’s Bay and Blenheim.
Catherine's particular focus is on helping mothers and babieswho struggle to breastfeed because of anatomical or medicalissues like tongue-tie or reflux. She’s the author of severalreference books on breastfeeding, and her current researchprojects involve the biomechanics of the lactating nipple andanalysing infant sucking by using ultrasound.
The Birthing Centre’s lactation consultant, Debbie Tetlow sayswhen they heard Catherine was speaking at a conference in
Australia they wereeager to ask her tovisit New Zealand aswell.

Last month I outlined how council raises itfunds this month it's spending…;
All of council's capital spending is fundedthrough borrowing and rates income is used to,repay that debt. Think of it like a perpetual revolvingcredit facility, because as long as things need to bebuilt roads, playgrounds, community centres or-public transport networks council will need to-borrow money.
Currently council is at the limit of its self-imposed debt ceiling as itwants to retain it AA credit rating keeps its borrowing costss , whichdown. This means it has a limited ability to build new assets, aproblem for a fast-growing city.
There is regional spending road networks and large sports-facilities and local spending parks, and local amenities., -
This spending is split into different categories ome is 'asset. Sbased' (the costs involved in the upkeep and renewal of assets);some is capital spending as mentioned above; some is spent byLocal Boards on what is called 'local discretionary initiatives' and;then there operational costs the money spent running theare -organisation like governance support (the advice politicians receive)or wages spent on general staff within departments ates only. Rcontribute about 16 of this cost.percent
Water supply and wastewater are not paid for by rates they are;funded by user charges.
A isfrequent complaint of rural ratepayers that they don't getsewerage and water yet they pay rates. f they wereservices, But ireceiving these services they'd be in addition to rates. Watercare, thecouncil controlled organisation (CCO) that manages water servicesis pouring millions of dollars into Rodney's clapped-outinfrastructure, a legacy of decades of under investment. This is a-good example of the benefits of being part of Auckland Council he. Tcost was a significant burden for Rodney District Council with its tinyrating base, however Watercare can manage the cost across itsentire network.
Another example of a large asset that previously had to beserviced by a small ratepayer base is Rodney's road network.
We have over 1700km of roads, the largest network in Auckland,but servicing a population half the size of the Waitemata Ward(55,000 v 102,000). 678km of that network is unsealed anothers ,legacy of the previous council's budget woes sealing stopped when;Government withdrew subsidies and has only started again since,the formation ofAuckland Council.
As with Watercare, Auckland Transport spreads the significantinvestment in Rodney's roads across Auckland rather than directly,on the 22,000 rateable properties in Rodney.

"Parakai Springs are generously allowing us free use of theirfacility," says Holly Southernwood. "Auckland Council charges foruse of the meeting room in the Helensville War Memorial Halldoubled from July 1, making it beyond our budget.
"At our AGM in June it was agreed to ‘vote with our feet’ and trialthe Parakai venue," she says.

I've written about cyber bullying in a previousissue, but I thought I would bring it to the fore againas it’s been quite a prevalent issue over the last sixmonths here in Helensville.
Posting or messaging nasty comments isinexcusable - but then isn’t reactive retaliation justas bad? When do we step back from what is ahighly emotional situation and think to ourselves,let’s not post that, send this message or make thisphone call?
At the time we may think we are looking out for the person we careabout, whether that be ourselves, a friend or a family member Butdoesn’t this behaviour make us a bully too? Where do you draw theline and recognise that your behaviour isn’t acceptable either?
Never engage in any conversation, whether by phone or anotherdigital device, when you feel you are being bullied or threatened.Hang up or stop messaging. It’s simple and an easy solution toeliminate this conduit for bullying. Unfortunately if you don’t, it can beperceived by outside parties that you have contributed to the problemand it becomes harder to prove allegations of this nature.
Never disclose any personal or sensitive information aboutyourself via digital communication. Don’t incite someone to self-harmor to commit suicide, never make false allegations, and refrain fromusing social media with the intention to threaten, intimidate, offend orharass another person.
Never give your password to another. You may think at the time itmay be ok to share our passwords with friends or partners, butremember - you are not just putting your own privacy at risk, but alsobreaching the trust of those that you correspond with.
There are definite consequences to what we post, especially if it’snegative, and unfortunately how we or others choose to respond hasthe potential to aggravate the situation further. Harmful posts aboutanother person and threatening messages are offences in NewZealand, but when it’s deemed to be a conversation, it gets harder todistinguish who is the victim and who is the offender.
If you read messages or comments you feel uncomfortable about,seek the guidance of a level headed, trusted friend or family memberto discuss the content and make a decision as to whether you shouldreport it to the police. Food labellingBacon and other pork products are foods that we in New Zealand seem to consume a
great deal of an estimated 100,000 tonnes each year is the figure suggested in a recent-article n S .o the tuff website
Alot of the pork is not eaten as fresh pork but is made into bacon and small goods, such assausage, ham and salami.
A few years ago there was a lot of bad press regarding the production of pigs forconsumption with an exposé of crated pig farms angering many New Zealanders. The,backlash against the industry was bigand the industry listened the rules;changed and crate farming was phasedout. Job done we all thought.
Free range pig farms gainedmomentum and free range pork productsgrew their market share he products. Tcost considerably more but that seemed,a fair trade off knowing the animals at-least enjoyed a more natural life andwere free to move about, wallow, beandwith and connect with their fellowcreatures.
Now the disturbing part of the story.Of the estimated 100,000 tonnes of porkconsumed each year it turns out that barely 45 is grown in New Zealand he balancepercent . Tis imported from mainly Spain, Finland, USA and Canada. While these countries also runthefree range pigs the price being paid for the bacon in the supermarket would suggest the pork,meat is coming from a more intensive low cost farming method. Note that in all these,countries intensive pig farming is an accepted practice.
So how do we find out?In New Zealand and Australia we have consumer protection with a ood tandard odef s s c
under the watchful eyes of the Ministry of Primary Industries. The food standards code swadesigned jointly with Australia ( o read go to foodstandards.govt.nz) There is at more : www. .requirement for accuracy in labe ing ingredients, nutritional values, weights etc arell -considered very important. In Australia the country of origin of ingredients is currentlycompulsory until 2018 fter which it will be voluntary., a
Country of origin labelling is already voluntary in New Zealand and suppliers may choose,not to display this information. There is an exception for grape wine, which must be labelledwith its country or countries of origin. When suppliers do include country of origin information,it must be accurate.
All food must be labelled with the contact details of the food supplier in New Zealand orAustralia, so you can contact the supplier and ask for details about the food. Words such asmanufactured in New Zealand imply more than they mean. Manufactured may mean thebacon was manufactured in New Zealand but the pork may have come from overseas.
My suggestion is that we as consumers do just that pick up the phone and ask the-manufacturer where the pork meat came from he manufacturer is obliged to tell you. The. Tgovernment does not think this information should be mandatory on the packaging so we,really have no choice but to make that call nless of course concern over the welfare of- u ourthe animals we consume only relates to New Zealand animals.grown
