Identifying counterfeit items is an increasing priority for pharmaceutical companies, engineers, and other organisations anxious to ensure that pr oducts are as they are supposed to be. Countering fraud is also a priority as products are shipped globally, distrbution networks spread more widely and organised crime targets conventional business tr ansactions. What does Smart&Secure do? Passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology provides a cost effective means of tagging assets to enable efficient, highspeed automated identification. However, if a tag is to reliably indicate the presence of the originally tagged asset it must include tamper evident technology. Otherwise, the tag can be removed, or moved from one asset to another, without the RFID system detecting the interference. MIKOH’s patented Smart&Secure™ technology provides secure, reliable, cost effective tamper evidence for RFID tags, ensuring a one-to-one relationship between the tag and tagged asset. Smart&Secure RFID tags can be supplied in either of two configurations; Destroy-on-Removal or Tamper-Reporting. Destruct-On-Removal: In this configurati on a Smart&Secur e tag stops working when tampered, thereby preventing the tag being successfully transferred to another asset or removed and replaced. The automated identification system must then be configured to determine by exception that tampering has occurred. Tamper-Repor ting: In this configura tion a Smart&Secure tag continues to function when tampered, but indicates tampering to an RFID reading device. The automated identification system then consequently provides positive indication of tampering. Smart&Secure adds a critical capability in any application in which:  RFID tags are used as security seals;  RFID tags are used to tag high-value, sensitive, or legally important assets.  RFID tags are used to authenticate documents, spare parts, containers or individuals Smart&Secure RFID tags are ISO-compliant and can be manufactured in a variety of form factors and to suit a wide range of environmental conditions. Both high frequency and ultra high frequency versions are readily available. Smart&Secure tags are compatible with all standard passive RFID frequencies, and protocols in the HF and UHF band. Swapping tags from genuine to counterfeit parts can be deterred with a Smart&Secure based solution.

Tamper evident technology for RFID tags deters fraud & theft.

RFID is commonly used to keep track of assets, but how can you be sure that the tag and the asset belongtogether? Identifying counterfeit items is an increasing priority for pharmaceutical companies, engineers, andother organisations anxious to ensure that products are as theyare supposed to be. Countering fraud is also a priority as productsare shipped globally, distrbution networks spread more widely andorganised crime targets conventional business transactions.

What does Smart&Secure do?

Passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology provides a costeffective means of tagging assets to enable efficient, highspeed automatedidentification. However, if a tag is to reliably indicate the presence of theoriginally tagged asset it must include tamper evident technology. Otherwise, the tag can be removed, or moved from one asset to another, without the RFIDsystem detecting the interference.

MIKOH’s patented Smart&Secure™ technology provides secure, reliable, costeffective tamper evidence for RFID tags, ensuring a one-to-one relationshipbetween the tag and tagged asset.

Smart&Secure RFID tags can be supplied in either of two configurations; Destroy-on-Removal or Tamper-Reporting.

Destruct-On-Removal: In this configuration a Smart&Secure tag stops working when tampered, thereby preventing the tagbeing successfully transferred to another asset or removed and replaced. The automatedidentification system must then be configured to determine by exception that tampering hasoccurred.

Tamper-Reporting: In this configuration a Smart&Secure tag continues to function when tampered, but indicatestampering to an RFID reading device. The automated identification system then consequentlyprovides positive indication of tampering.

Smart&Secure adds a critical capability in any application in which:

•  RFID tags are used as security seals;

•  RFID tags are used to tag high-value, sensitive, or legally important assets.

•  RFID tags are used to authenticate documents, spare parts, containers or individuals

Smart&Secure RFID tags are ISO-compliant and can be manufactured in a variety of form factors and to suit a wide range of environmentalconditions. Both high frequency and ultra high frequency versions are readily available. Smart&Secure tags are compatible with all standardpassive RFID frequencies, and protocols in the HF and UHF band.

Swapping tags from genuine to counterfeit partscan be deterred with a Smart&Secure basedsolution.

The Smart&Secure Inform SystemThe MIKOH Smart&Secure™ Inform tag is a pressure-sensitive RFID label incorporating a chip and antenna manufactured from destructibleconductive ink. Its tamper layer causes antenna damage when the tag is compromised or removed. This is done through a special multi-layer adhesive design. A proprietary adhesive chemistry and multi-layer manufacturing process result in reliable tamper indication even when sophisticatedtamper methods are used, including:

•  Temperature Extremes (e.g. Liquid Nitrogen Freezing, Heat Guns)

•  Chemical Attack (e.g. Solvents, Corrosives)

•  Mechanical Attack (e.g. Razor Blades, Knives)

MIKOH's highly-flexible Smart&Secure™ Inform platform works across a widevariety of RFID designs with no impact on performance. Smart&Secure™ Inform.

MIKOH MK-202 Label Tag

The MK-202 is a typical example of the Mikoh family of tamper detecting RFIDtags. A UHF label tag, the MK-202 uses the popular Impinj Monza-2 chip but adds a

conductive silver ink antenna andMikoh’s patented multi-layer tamper detection system toprovide a 25.4mm x 38.65mm tagthat can be fixed to a wide rangeof surfaces.

Using the ISO 18000-6 standard it can be written to or read by any of the wide range of

standard UHF reader/writers available unless any attempt is made to remove it from theasset to which it is originally applied. Removing the MK-202, for example in an attempt toattach it to a counterfeit asset, makes it unreadable.

The MK-202 can be used in environments with operating temperatures ranging from -40oCto +65oC making it suitable for a wide range of uses. The antenna is a high performanceloop/dipole hybrid configuration for near and far field item level applications butperformance will vary with reader settings and the material on which the tag is mounted.

Other examples of the MIKOH family of tamper proof tags are available offering the NXPUcode G2XM chip, versions for use on metals, and small scale (19.5mm x 12.7mm)versions for tagging vials, evidence or research samples etc.

High frequency versions are available with the iCode SLI-2K (ISO1443B compatible) chip in 22.22mm x 44.44mm, 23mm x 63mm and62mm x 92mm form factors. Custom development of tags based on other chips or to other form factors is possible for high volumerequirements.

MIKOH Smart&Secure tags can also be used in conjunction with Mikoh’s SecureContainer TM

range. These products can provide a mechanismfor transporting documents, samples or other materials in a way that provides end-to-end evidence that the contents of the case have notbeen tampered with.
