Continued training and the importance of family support were the watch words last Wednesday evening as 50 new volunteers were honored at the 2011 Spring EMS and Firefighter Graduation Program, held at Goochland High School.

Thirty-two EMT Academy grad-uates and 18 Firefighter Academy graduates were recognized.

As the first order of business, Fire and Rescue Chief William MacKay asked the new recruits to stand up and turn around.

“Those folks who are out there are the reason that you graduated,” said MacKay, referring to the recruits’ fami-

lies. “Their support and encouragement are the reasons you made it through the training,” he said, “So I want all of you to say thank you to them.”

When their thank you shout was not loud enough to please the chief, he had them do it again.

Sales took the opportunity to thank those involved in the redistricting effort.

“Given that the redistricting of election districts only occurs once every 10 years following the decennial U.S. census, our Board of Supervisors decided early on that they wanted as

much citizen input as pos-sible in the development of Goochland’s 2011 redistricting plan,” said Sales.

“Consequently, the tasks of developing a restricting plan, notifying our citizens, host-ing six community meetings, incorporating citizen input and timely adopting the 2011 redis-tricting ordinance required a significant amount of planning

and work by a large number of people, including our citi-zens. Now that Goochland’s redistricting ordinance has been pre-cleared by the U.S. Department of Justice in com-pliance with the Voting Rights Act, I would like to thank all persons in the county who participated in the process.”

In order to vote in the upcoming primary voters must

register by 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 1, said Ragland.

Aug. 20 by 5 p.m. is the deadline for casting an absen-tee ballot in person and the Registrar’s office will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. that day to accommodate such vot-ers.

Voters with questions may contact the Registrar’s Office at 804 556-5803.

His real name is Vernon Gentry. He’s a barber at Bubba’s Barber Shop on Ridge Road and has been cutting hair there for 35 years. Most of the customers, including the shop’s regulars, don’t know Vernon, but if you ask them who Dickey is, everybody knows Dickey.

“I’ve been barbering for 44 years and been here for 35,” he said after work recently. “The shop has been here since the 1950s, and Bubba owned and operated it from 1973 until he died three years ago. His wife now runs the shop.”

Bubba’s real name was Harry Lee, and he got the name Bubba from his sister who was trying to say brother and it came out Bubba.

Gentry, who lives across from Luck Stone in Goochland County, said that he and Lee went to barber’s college together.

“We grew up in the same neighborhood and then went to barber’s college over on Hull Street together,” he said. “I worked at Tony’s Barber Shop on Wilkinson Road before com-ing to Bubba’s.”

Over the years, Gentry said he had cut a lot of hair and seen a lot of changes in the business.

“I’ve probably given well over 100,000 haircuts,” he said. “The last 15 to 20 years have been good years for barbers. It’s been a good business to be in. About the time I got into the business in the late 60s, it was one of the worse times to be a barber.

“The Beatles were real popular, and a lot of people were adopting their long hair style. With the long hair craze, people were getting fewer haircuts, and a lot of barbers went out of business.”

Gentry said staying consistent was one of the keys to being a successful barber.

“You want to be able to give the customer what he wants,” he explained. “At one time,

razor cuts were real popular, but now, most customers seem to want a good old fashioned haircut.”

Getting to know your regular customers is important. At Bubba’s, Gentry isn’t just another barber. He has a customer base that will pass on other barbers and wait for him, and when they are in his chair, he is meticu-lous and precise in the way he cuts their hair.

“I try to give everybody a good haircut,” he said. “They are taking their time and spend-ing their money to come here, and I want to make sure when the leave they are pleased.”

Gentry must be doing something right because he noted one of the customers he sees periodically is another barber.

“He has his own shop, but when he needs a haircut, he comes here.”

Gentry said being a barber had its moments.

“Years ago, a lady came in with her son,” he said with a laugh. “The boy was bouncing around in my chair, and I was trying to get started, when I saw something go flying into the air. It took a second or two for me to real-ize it was some skin off my knuckle. About that time, the pain hit and I grabbed my hand. I tried to put it back in place with a band aid, but it didn’t really do any good.”

Gentry said he had no plans to stop cut-ting hair anytime soon.

“I’m 62 and I’ve known barbers who have worked into their 80s,” he said. “You have to stand a lot, so if you take care of your feet by wearing good shoes and standing on a mat when you work, as long as your health is good, you can work as long as you want.”

For customers at Bubba’s Barber Shop, they hope Dickey has another 100,000 or more haircuts to go.

tance of continuing to train to update their skills.

“This is the end of your initial training,” said MacKay. “But if you think you’ve learned every-thing, you’re sadly mistaken. Our line of business is constantly evolving and changing.”

MacKay also acknowledged the hazardous nature of the work the volunteers will do.

“I can’t promise that your loved ones will always come home to you safe and sound,” he told the families, “But I will make this promise to you, that during their time with Goochland Fire and Rescue, we’ll make sure they have the best equipment, the best training, the best personal pro-tective equipment and the best folks they can have accompany-ing them into a dangerous envi-ronment.”

“The community respects you, they trust you,” said Deputy Chief of EMS Eddie Ferguson, and urged the recruits to be respectful and show compassion to those they will serve.

“They may remember you for the rest of their lives,” said Ferguson of the people the recruits will help.

Ferguson also encouraged the new volunteers to keep on learning.

“This business has risks – con-tinue to take training,” he said.

Deputy Chief of Training Chris Brooks followed up on the training theme.

“You can never stop train-ing,” he said. ‘Every call you learn something.”

District 3 supervisor Ned Creasey, a life member of Goochland Fire and Rescue, said the Fire and Rescue Service led to him being on the Board of Supervisors.

“It’s our duty to provide you with the best training and equipment,” said Creasey, who told families to “say a little prayer” when the volunteers go out on a call.

Keynote speaker Captain Eugene E. “Cricket” Gerald of the Henrico Fire Department praised the graduates for their accom-plishments.

“We welcome you into the fire service family,” said Gerald. He said the most important tool the recruits have is their hearts.

“Helping people you don’t know – you can’t do that without compassion and sacrifice,” said Gerald and urged the graduates to fall back on their families for support.

“We’re all brothers and sis-ters, anywhere in the world, New York, London or Goochland,” said District Chief Kevin Jones, who served as the master of

ceremonies for the event. After the graduates filed

across the stage to receive their badges and certificates, they gathered at a reception with friends and family.

EMT graduate Jesse Powell got a hug from EMT Academy Lead Instructor Pamm Bryant.

“I wanted to help out the community,” said Powell, who said he hoped one day to be a full-time paid EMT. Powell said he plans to attend the Firefighter Academy next.

Another EMT graduate, Jillian Edgar, a rising senior at Goochland High School, said she hopes one day to be a doctor.

“They welcome you in,” said Edgar of the Fire/EMS community.

MacKay said the sense of family among fire and rescue personnel extends world-wide.

“You can stop at any fire-house around the world,” he said. “It doesn’t know any boundaries.”

MacKay praised the gradu-ates and said although some may go on to other things, many will stay at home.

“Some may go on to become doctors or other professionals but some may stay for 20 or 30 years as volunteers here in Goochland County,” he said.

Supervisors nix splitting personal property tax into June and December payments

By Ken [email protected]

Goochland supervisors declined last week to adopt a proposal that would split the personal property tax on motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers into two pay-ments per year.

Deputy County Administrator John Wack presented the plan at the evening session of the July 5 Board of Supervisors meet-ing.

“Essentially the taxpayers would be paying the same amount of tax in calendar year 2012 but by having a June, 2012 collection we would have a one-time addi-tional revenue collection of about $2.2 million dollars,” said Wack.

Wack said this money could be used to help restore the general fund balance, which has been drawn down in recent years to balance the county’s budgets.

Wack listed advantages and disadvantages of the plan.

On the plus side, besides the one-time $2.2 million dol-lar revenue gain to the county in FY2012, the county cash flow would benefit and inter-est earnings would improve and budgeting and forecast-ing would be enhanced as the value of vehicles would be confirmed twice a year, said Wack. Citizens would ben-efit by not having to pay the amount in one lump sum.

On the downside, the twice a year payment schedule would add to the workload

of the Commissioner of the Revenue and the Treasurer.

Commissioner of the Revenue Jean Bryant and Interim Treasurer Pamela Johnson both requested that any change to the per-sonal property tax collection schedule be postponed to 2013 when they spoke at the June Board of Supervisors meeting.

The proposal did include $65,000 in additional staff support for the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office and a companion ordinance to move the date of the motor vehicle license fee to June 5 would have lessened the impact on the Treasurer’s Office, said Wack.

Several speakers rose to oppose the change in the public hearing.

David Ligon said he was against putting an extra work-load on the Commissioner of the Revenue and the Treasurer.

Michael McDermott noted that the $65,000 would be a recurring annual expense that would reduce the net amount collected.

Susan Lascolette and Kevin Hazzard also spoke against the motion.

A motion to approve the ordinance failed on a 2-3 vote, with supervisors Jim Eads and Chairman William Quarles in favor.

The board then voted to defer consideration of the ordinance indefinitely, approving that motion on a 3-2 vote, with Ned Creasey, Andrew Pryor and Eads voting in favor.

Residents of Bellview Gardens seem destined to get their wish concerning its future development after the Board of Supervisors unani-mously voted Tuesday to send an amendment to the Planning Commission that would change the wording in the Comprehensive Plan and make commercial devel-opment basically impossible within the subdivision.

The amendment will change the land use descrip-tion for the area from “Flexible” to “Residential maximum 2.5 units per acre.”

In the information pack-age supervisors received for the July 5 board meeting, the agenda page that out-lined the proposed amend-ment change by supervisor Malvern R. “Rudy” Butler had the following language for the Flexible Land Use des-ignation in the Goochland 2028 Comprehensive Plan – Centerville Village Land Use Map: “A combination of land uses such as office, com-mercial, office/service, and light industrial may be con-sidered….Generally excludes single family residential and heavy industrial uses…”

cerning the language change now goes to the Planning Commission for a public hearing.

“It’s an established resi-dential neighborhood, and we’re just trying to protect the residents,” Butler said by phone Thursday. “There wasn’t enough frontage on Broad Street, and Goodwill Industries would have had to go into the subdivision to build their store. They were going to buy two houses, and demolish them to build, and I didn’t think that was right.”

The subdivision has 38 homes, and its residents were spurred to action when Goodwill Industries request-ed a zoning change to allow construction of a 17,000 square foot retail store and donation collection center at

the intersection of Mills Road and Broad Street.

“We have only one street [Mills Road] for people to travel in and out of our neighborhood,” said Bellview Gardens’ resident Jodi Hosken, who spoke at the board meeting in favor of the amendment. “We don’t oppose commercial develop-ment at our end of the coun-ty. We do oppose commercial development on that road since it is the only way in and out of our neighborhood.”

In March, the Planning Commission voted unani-mously to deny a request by Goodwill Industries for a zoning change that would have allowed the building of the proposed store to move forward.

At that meeting, Bellview Gardens residents voiced opposition to the zoning change. Among the many concerns they had, resi-

dents questioned the abil-ity of Mills Road to handle the daily commercial truck traffic the store would create and, the Goodwill Industries policy to hire people with criminal records to work in their stores.

Attorney James Theobald, representing Goodwill Industries, said that truck traffic would be limited to one delivery a day.

Based on the Planning Commission’s denial and opposition by subdivi-sion residents to the store, Goodwill Industries with-drew its application to build the store and donation cen-ter in a letter received by the county in April.

Theobald said at the time the application was withdrawn that Goodwill Industries remained inter-esting in finding a site in the county to build.

For my birthday

Hyers supports change in government

Goochland citizens keep hear-ing bad news about the misman-agement in the county Treasurer’s office. Richmond Times Dispatch reports that taxpayers have lost at least $230,000 in funds stolen and lost through mismanage-ment and fraud.

Goochland taxpayers deserve a system that manages their money using modern accounting and financial procedures with profes-sionals in charge who are hired and responsible to our Board of Supervisors.

A change in County form of

government from our present form to County Manager form will bring all the functions of the Treasurer’s office under a county manager. The Board of Supervisors will then have full

authority and supervision over these functions.

Courtney Hyers, candidate for Supervisor in District #5, is the

Letters to the Editor

All I want is a debt ceiling deal. And some peace and quiet.Lately, one can’t turn on the tele-

vision, open a newspaper or check one’s electronic device without being barraged by endless reports on how the seemingly interminable series of meetings concerning raising the nation’s debt ceiling are going.

We’re told by many that if the Congress and the President can’t get their act together and reach an agree-ment on raising the allowable level of indebtedness, all manner of catastro-phe will ensue.

And somehow the deadline date they’ve picked when the four horse-men of the apocalypse will be loosed is August 2, this writer’s birthday.

Now how are folks going to con-centrate on the important stuff, like deciding what present to buy me, with all this debt ceiling hoopla going on?

It’s just not fair.I guess I could pretend that watch-

ing the national sparring partners is a comedy routine put on by an espe-cially inept troupe for entertainment at my birthday party.

But I’d much rather that Secretary of the Treasury, Tim Geithner, had picked another arbitrary date for the deadline to this contrived theater show.

Here at the local level we have had our share of theater, with the two boards going back and forth with budget proposals, citizens chiming in with their thoughts, charges of dire consequences if one thing or another is not funded, until at the end, all is finally somehow decided and the

process ends.At the national level the nation

has operated without a budget for several years now, the Congress not even bothering to perform one of its basic functions. They just pass continuing resolutions authorizing things to continue on for a little longer. The debt ceiling talks are, it would seem, just more of the same, an authorization for the country to keep on borrowing money a little longer, since it can’t live within its means.

Just as many households do, the nation has been paying the bills as they come in, hoping without hope that its income will meet the demands of creditors, hitting the plastic (in the form of selling debt) for another injection of cash when the income is not there and the country needs something really bad.

It’s not a sane way to run a house-hold, county, state or nation.

Luckily for the county and the state, they are required to balance their budgets.

At the household level and nation-al levels, unfortunately, we are not.

But I’m convinced, despite all the dire warnings, that the four horse-men will unsaddle their steeds at the last minute when a deal is reached, probably the night before my birth-day, to raise the debt ceiling so that the nation can borrow more money to be repaid from Lord knows what resources later. Then we can get back to the impor-tant stuff.

Like opening my birthday presents!

one candidate who has advo-cated for change to a new form of government. She recognizes the serious flaws in the current system and the difficulty that the county administration has in man-aging our tax dollars. She knows that the Treasurer office is a relic and cannot keep up with the needs of the county.

We need to elect Courtney Hyers who will work hard to rebuild the financial struc-ture in Goochland with good ideas such as this.

Wear those seatbelts

I have noted numbers of Goochland County employ-ees driving pick up trucks without their seatbelts on. I could not tell if they were county or school employees. All public employees should know the law and manage-ment should enforce it. The same goes for Department of Corrections employ-ees but that is something the Governor needs to deal with.

The Department would like to thank Republic Services, INC./Allied Waste Services for their sponsor-

ship of the event. Goochland County thanks you for your contribution in helping to celebrate this year’s festivi-ties. Much appreciation to Dominion Fireworks, who prepared throughout the threat of major storms and heavy rain, working closely with County Departments to ensure the show would not be postponed. District 5 seat critical to county

On Tues., Aug. 2 District 5 will hold a Republican canvass to select their candidate to run for a seat on Goochland’s Board of Supervisors.

Why is this one seat in District 5 so critical to the future of the entire county?

The neighborhoods along River Road are being asked to consider future development of the Benedictine property. Further development of this land as a school facility will have an impact on roads, county services and quality of life within the River Road community. These neigh-borhoods, in many ways, are emblematic of Goochland itself. Such construction would be transformational for River Road.

Parts of District 5 touch the Centerville Village area where the Board of Supervisors has proposed urban housing and commercial development for thousands of families.

Both of these rezoning scenarios, if approved by our Board of Supervisors, will bring permanent change to the face of Goochland. I live in District 4, three miles from the proposed urban area. Urbanization on such a scale is in direct competition with Henrico, will destroy the character of our environ-ment, and, in my opinion, is doomed to failure. The Board of Supervisors major-ity vote will determine what Goochland will look like and how we will function in the future. One Supervisor’s vote that constitutes a major-ity can wreak an enormous amount of damage that can never be undone.

Who will determine how Goochland is going to look? Will it be someone who is going to open up our county like a sardine can? Rezoning and land use issues are the most transformational deci-

sions a Supervisor makes.Developers have lined up

behind their candidate for District 5. Only one of the candidates has seen first-hand what it takes to pre-serve Goochland’s unique character because she has served for the past 4 years on the Goochland Planning Commission. Courtney Hyers knows that protecting our neighborhoods and envi-ronment is compatible with economic growth and is also a trend of the future. Business expansion should be guided to areas such as West Creek and Tuckahoe Creek Service District, thereby creating liv-able and healthy communi-ties.

Our current County Administrator and staff are diligently applying a well considered, deliberative and professional process to guide our county through this dif-ficult economy. On matters where consultants have been required, they have been hired

to advise as we move forward. It is my hope that the vot-ers in District 5 will express themselves at the polls on August 2. The county needs you. There are more voters than there are developers.

Broadband in Goochland needed

I attended the Goochland Board of Supervisor’s meet-ing last week and had the chance to comment on issues relating to Verizon Wireless and the recent degradation of their mobile broadband Internet service across the county.

It seems that Verizon Wireless has been shifting some equipment around to prepare for the 4G rollout in Henrico and that’s having an impact on our network. Last time I checked, most of the folks in western Henrico

already have great high speed Internet service.

So Verizon is simply going to raid the equipment from our county where many of us have no other options to give it to the folks in Henrico so they can have even better Internet service?

That’s preposterous. Moreover, it can have a big impact on the Sheriff ’s department and other first responders who rely on get-ting information fast in the field. At the Board meeting, there was a motion to invite a manager from Verizon to the August meeting to address what’s been going on. The motion passed.

However, I publicly argued that if the Verizon fellow actually shows up, it will be a big waste of time. Only the Virginia State Corporation Commission has the power to regulate public utilities. As powerful

as Supervisor Quarles may feel in dragging a middle-level Verizon manager onto his carpet, Mr. Quarles has no authority to do anything once he gets there.

What the Board does have sway over are things like easements, proffers, rights-of-way and zoning. Why isn’t the board working with the Planning Commission to designate preferred tower sites all over the county? They should be proactively removing obstacles so that Verizon and its competitors can blanket our county with high-performance, low-cost wireless Internet. If those companies saw our super-visors demonstrating that kind of leadership, they would respond with free market action that matches exactly what the people of Goochland County desire.

Solving this problem will bring small businesses and work-at-home businesses to the county in great num-bers. And that will make Goochland County as won-derful a place to work as it is to live.

Thanks to the per-son who donated to the library

I add my thanks to the generous individual who provided funding for the Goochland Branch Library to return to its full schedule. $31,500 is a goodly sum for one person to give; not so much for a county govern-ment to provide.

Perhaps had the Board not voted a raise for the next term of supervisors enough money would have been available for the library

and other programs. Just a thought!

Change is needed

I am writing as a member of the Goochland County board of supervisors and I am not speaking for the board. I am not speaking of personalities. Like every one else, I am dismayed at the continuing revelations about the county treasurers office. Why is that so? Under the county administrator’s form of government, the treasurer is an independently elected constitutional officer and reports to the voters and not to the board of supervi-sors. There are little or no requirements to be a county treasurer, except to be a resi-dent of the county. County government, like every thing else in our society, has become quite complex and

requires skilled people to administer. The duties of a treasures office. It is time for Goochland to change its form of government to that of a county manager form, just like Albermarle and Henrico.

Albermarle County changed in 1934 and Henrico in 1935. Small counties, like Goochland, can no longer depend on a pool of highly qualified people to com-pete in the political arena, to be the county treasurer. We must have highly quali-fied professional directors of finance that can man-age complex government finances. We operate under a system that worked well in 1870, but is inadequate to meet the needs of the county in the twenty first century. Goochland can prove this old system doesn’t work.

Contributed ReportGlen Allen High School and Holman

Middle School have earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification as verified by the Green Building Certification Institute.

Glen Allen High School recently achieved LEED certification at the Gold level. The school features an abundance of natural light, and through efficiency considerations in the

building’s roof and wall construction, light-ing systems, and mechanical system, it is modeled to require 28 percent less energy than a minimally code-compliant design. A 50,000-gallon cistern collects storm water from the roof, which is reused for f lushing. This cistern, combined with low-plumbing fixtures, results in an 80 percent water use reduction versus a school using standard plumbing systems.

“HCPS and Moseley Architects had a vision for Glen Allen to become a LEED certified school and we continually worked toward this goal,” said Tracie Weston, the principal at Glen Allen.

“The entire Glen Allen learning community celebrates this achievement and we are proud

Nutzy goes to the library

He doesn’t say much, but he’s a hit both at The Diamond and with kids just about anywhere.

Nutzy, the Richmond Flying Squirrels mascot, proved that again, on a visit to promote reading to the Twin Hickory Library last week.

Nutzy showed up Thursday to greet fans and give out keepsakes. He toured the children’s section of the library for about an hour, paus-ing to give out high fives to whoever wanted one.

Henrico Library’s Chris Holliman accompanied Nutzy.

“It’s just to promote the library,” said Holliman of the visit.

Twin Hickory is always busy and some were surprised to see the Squirrels mascot there.

Retired Henrico teacher Ken Bortner, although a lifetime baseball fan who grew up near Baltimore and used to travel to Florida to see the Braves in spring training, said he had yet to see a Squirrels’ game.

Perhaps Nutzy changed his mind.

to be an environmentally friendly school.”

Holman Middle School received certification at the silver level and fea-tures efficient mechanical equipment and high-per-formance lighting systems, which are estimated to reduce the facility’s energy use by 30 percent (com-pared to a minimally code-compliant baseline design) as well as low-flow plumb-ing fixtures that reduce water use by approximately 40 percent compared to standard fixtures.

“We are honored to be the first LEED certified middle school in the county,” said Holman Middle School

Principal Brian Fellows.

Two more “green” schools in Henrico County will join Glen Allen High School and Holman Middle School. The school system currently has two LEED registered projects, a West Area Elementary School and an East Area High School. These proj-ects will also pursue LEED throughout the design and construction process.

“(LEED certification) is an incredible accomplish-ment,” said Jim McCalla, vice president of Moseley Architects, the design firm hired to build the schools. “There has really been a shift in the K-12 world toward higher building standards.”

Goochland County residents who enjoy auctions, probably know the name of Grindstaff, if for no other reason than because every New Year’s Day, they hold an auction.

The event is usually held at the Goochland County Fairgrounds, but with the demolition of the building usually used, a new site will have to be located.

“We’ll probably go to the Rockville Community Center,” said Anne Grindstaff. “We have used that building before, and although it’s not set yet, I’d say it’s a good choice.”

Anne is married to Jimmy Grindstaff, who according to her, has been selling something most of his life.

“I’ve been told he was selling things when he was eight years old,” she said.

Anne said she is working on

becoming a better auctioneer.“Whether we are having one

of our biweekly auctions at our gallery [8079 Mechanicsville Pike] or on site for a client, Jimmy does most of the chanting,” she said. “It can put a strain on your vocal cords, and I’ll take over when he needs a break.”

She has recently completed the first of three, one-week classes at Indiana University.

“Some of the best auctioneers in the business are there, and we work on a lot more than develop-ing a chant,” she said. “The classes are over a three year period, and we work on things like how to market your business and how to advertise an auction.”

One of the big responsibili-ties an auctioneer must possess is knowing when not to sell some-thing.

“We don’t price items,” she said. “People come to auctions because they want to get a deal. Get something for nothing. On

the other hand, people are selling items to raise money. So if I have an item up for bid that I know is worth $2,500 and there’s no interest or someone says I’ll give you $10 for it, I have to say no and not sell the item. When you sell something and it’s a real giveaway, you hurt the seller because they don’t make any money. You hurt yourself and your reputation, and you hurt the auctioneering busi-ness.”

Grindstaff said that if some-one wants a job with a future that auctioneering is a good business to get into.

“Virginia has laws similar to those for real estate agents that govern the auctioneering busi-ness,” she said. “There are any number of schools someone can go to and learn the basics, and then its work and continuing education to develop your skills and become a professional.

“We are busy just about all of the time,” Grindstaff added.

“When the economy is good and when the economy is bad, there’s always a need for an auction-eer. It might be an estate sale or a real estate sale, selling something at auction is usu-ally a quick, clean way to raise money.”

She said that some people come to auctions like they would go to a movie.

“It’s a form of entertain-ment for them. They come out, look around at what’s for sale, maybe drink a soda, and then just sit and watch. Others

coming to an auction might be looking to stock a store or pick up some items that they will then take to a flea market. We get a variety of folks at an auction just like we have a variety of items to sell. I guess that’s two reasons the business is so much fun.”

Collegiate School rising Junior Preston Bartlett Wootton Roper received the Eagle Scout rank--the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America program--at his Court of Honor on May 8 at Second Baptist Church. Roper, 17, is a member of Troop 702.

For Roper’s Eagle Scout proj-ect, he built a wheel chair ramp for Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services office. “I chose this project because it helps the disabled clients needing services access to the offices and food pantry.” The wheel chair ramp allows them to meet at more than one location”

Achieving the ranking of Eagle Scout requires many years of strength and dedication. Each scout must earn 21 merit badges

and plan and execute an Eagle Scout project. A project write-up must be submitted to a com-mittee and be approved before awarding the Eagle Scout rank-ing.

Roper completed his proj-ect with the assistance of the troop, family and a wonder-ful mentor Mr. Knight Bowles. The project required approx-imately 144 hours of work in fundraising, planning, orga-nizing and execution at a cost of $1,200. Roper raised all the money from dona-tions.

The local government officials put Roper through his paces, requiring him to make four appearances to discuss his project before being cleared to begin work on the project.

Roper is the son of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Roper Jr. of

Manakin Sabot. Preston is the grandson of Anne and Chuck Crowl of Manakin Sabot , Va and Mrs. LeRoy Roper of Colonial Heights.

It was like being all dressed up with nowhere to go for the Goochland 15-16 year old Dixie League All Star team as they waited to open the five day state tournament last week. The tourney will eventually send one team to the league’s World Series in Independence, Louisiana but first it had to get started.

The team was raring to go on Friday but weather did not cooperate and this year’s play-offs were delayed by a day. In the end, it didn’t matter for the local team.

Goochland opened the tournament Saturday at the high school complex with a 5-3 win over Buckingham in the double elimination com-petition.

“We’re very excited to get off to a good start in the tour-nament after a delay yesterday with the rain, it was good to come back in here and get the momentum going,” said Goochland Coach Stratford

Goochland All-Stars eye Dixie League titleSlater.

Buckingham pitcher Dylan Davis didn’t make it easy. The right-hander held Goochland to just three hits through the first five innings, and it appeared the visitor’s 2-0 lead would stand up.

It was an outcome the Goochland All-Stars weren’t willing to accept, and their bats came alive in the sixth, as the host team strung together a line of singles, followed by a base clearing triple by reliever Robert Runnett.

“It was a 2-2 count and I knew he didn’t want to go full,” Runnett said. “I was expecting a fastball so I just choked up and hit it the other way and things went my way.”

“We were down most of the game, but the boys turned it around when we had that firecracker inning,” Slater said.

Even with the nail biting opener, Slater felt this year’s squad of All-Stars has what it takes to capture a title. “I think we have the talent to finish this tournament out and win this

thing. This is the combination of two really strong teams, and we’re fortunate to have a great group of talent.”

Slater said strong turnout numbers are providing his squad with an ample of offen-sive and defensive power.

The coach feels the key to winning a double elimi-nation tournament, like the one Goochland is hosting this week, is pitching. League limi-tations on pitch counts make it a juggling act for coaches, but Stratford feels he’s playing with a strong hand.

“We’ve got eight or nine really strong pitchers that I would have no problem put-ting on the mound,” he said. “It’s a good problem to have.”

Forrest Witt started the game for Goochland and pitched five strong innings, allowing only four hits. Runnett came on in relief and closed the game after his key hit provided the offensive spark.

Buckingham threatened in the seventh, but Runnett slammed the door on the visi-

tors. “I was a little nervous,”

Runnett said. “It’s always nerve-racking as a pitcher to

come back after you’ve got that short lead and I didn’t want to give it back.”

Goochland is hosting the Dixie League 15-16 year old playoffs for the first time since 2008.

Game 2 on Sunday proved no easier for the home team, as Amelia gave the All-Stars all they could handle. “We jumped out to a quick lead of 3-0,” Slater said. “We traded scores back and forth with at least eight lead changes. It looked like it was going to come down to who batted last but we were able to hold them in the final inning even though they had loaded the bases. We got the third out and ended it before they could get the tying run in.”

Goochland won the game 13-12.

The second win put Goochland in the favorable position of being one of two remaining undefeated teams,

the other in the form of Halifax.

The two squared off for a meeting Monday night with both teams seeking a trip to the finals on Wednesday.

Teams participating in this year’s tournament included Goochland, Buckingham, Amelia, Halifax, Carroll, Bedford, and Mecklenburg.

In Goochland’s Dixie League Tournament opener, a close call at the plate on a fifth inning force play prompted an appeal after the game by Buckingham coaches. Goochland won the contest 5-3, then defeated Amelia 13-12 in the second round.
