Exploit the knowledge of our World Class technology

experts to help your project. Come to us early, and we will

help design your tooling and provide product suggestions to

help make your project a success. OMNOVAs patent

pending flow modeling technology (shown above), can

predict the performance of an in-mold coating on your

    specific substrate and process before

    any tool steel is cut.

Our lab has full sized production presses

    to test coatings and molds.

The absence of solvents makes it an environmentally

preferred green process. Since the coatings are

incorporated during the compression molding process

instead of being applied separately and do not contain

solvents (100% solids), they reduce the number of

surface finishing steps and cost in manufacturing

    while being environmentally friendly.

    Our in-mold coatings are formulated

to improve and enhance the surface

quality of SMC moldings. Shown is a standard automotive

test designed to demonstrate in-mold coating adhesion

    performance on SMC.

In-Mold Coatings from OMNOVA:The VOC-Free Primers for Compression Molding

Surface appearance is often an important requirement in compression

molded sheet molding compound (SMC) panels. To achieve this objective

the standard practice is to in-mold coat (IMC) the parts. In-mold coatings

are liquid materials that are integrated into the compression molding

manufacturing process of SMC components for automotive, transportation

and marine applications. These coatings are designed to improve the

surface quality of SMC moldings in functional and cosmetic parts and

enhance the surface of the part when used as a primer.

Our coatings function as substrate porosity fillers and surface sealers,

    providing a uniform surface that:

reduces or eliminates fiber read through

    levels low and high spots

    enhances DOI

    eliminates orange peel

    provides a solvent/moisture barrier
