PG AND RESEARCH DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
MINUTES OF BOARD OF STUDIES (2018-2019)
The Board of studies meeting was held on 07.04.2018 at 10.30 a.m in the Department of
Chemistry to discuss the changes in UG and PG syllabi.
The meeting commenced with a prayer by Ms. M. Stella Bharathy. The welcome address was
delivered by Ms. Maimoona Begum Head of the Department.
The experts present were
1. Dr. R. MayilMurugan, Professor in Inorganic Chemistry, School of Chemistry, Madurai
Kamaraj University, Madurai
2. Dr. V. Rajendran, Assistant Professor Department of Chemistry, Central University of
Tamilnadu, Thiruvarur.
3. Dr. B. Siva Kumar, Associate Director, Global technology Services, Pfizer Company,
SIPCOT Industrial park, Chenna
The experts made number of suggestions during the course of the meeting.
Agenda:
1. Revision of the UG syllabi
2. Revision of the PG syllabi
3. Minor textual corrections and revisions in the UG and PG syllabi
Purpose of Revision:
1. The courses were updated to focus on developing and employability skills of the students.
2. In order to help the students a basic understanding of different topics are modified.
3. Textual replacements and revision of UG and PG are kept before the board for
discussions
B.Sc Chemistry General Chemistry – I:
In 1.4 – Radial and angular functions can be included as a follow up to significance of and
the title of unit IV can be changed as theory of chemical analysis instead of qualitative analysis
General Chemistry – III:
Isotopes of hydrogen and metallic hydrides can be included in Unit - III
Volumetric Analysis – Theory cum Lab-1:
Practicals as applied like Estimation of Ca in milk powder and Determination of
hardness of water could be included.
Allied Chemsitry- II
Bioenergtics/ Non equilibrium Thermodynamics basic concepts could be included
Inorganic chemistry:
In 2.3 Irwing-William theory and in 5.1 oxygen transport – Heamoglobin could be
included prior to myoglobin and under Fe-S protein ferridoxin can be included.
Analytical Chemistry:
In unit-II data ethics could be included. In separation techniques under unit II: HPLC can
be included GC-MS, LC- MS can be included at the introductory level.
Allied Chemistry Paper II:[Physics]
Defects in solid state, conductors, semi-conductors and super conductors could be included
as 1.4.
SBE-5: Industrial Chemistry:
In unit-I API and its formulation can be included.
Chemistry Physical Chemistry I:
In unit-III titles can be changed as rotational, vibrational and Raman spectroscopy.
In 3.1. isotopic effect can be included and bring infrared spectroscopy under 3.2.
Physical Chemistry II:
The title of unit III can be changed as Thermodynamics and Phaseequilibria. In 4.2 KRR
theory should be changed as RRK theory
Inorganic Chemistry-I
In 4.2 quintuple bond can be included and the rearrangement of the units can be done. In
1.3 interpretation of IR spectra for functional group can be included.
In unit-II DEPT [Distortionless Enhancement by Polarization Transfer] can be included
under Ratification.
In unit III- LC-MS & ESI can be included under Ratification.
Organic Chemistry II:
In 2.1 addition reactions involving electrophiles, nucleophiles and free radicals with
some specific examples can be included
Inorganic Chemistry II:
In 4.1 term symbols, microstates, selection rule and charge transfer spectra can be included.
Inorganic ChemistryIII:
In 2.3 few biological molecules containing Cu(II) and Fe(III) complexes can be included.
Radiopharmaceutical applications can be included.
Suggestions for future:
1. In all the practical chemistry papers in house lab manual can be included in reference.
2. In Physical, Organic, Inorganic papers advanced topics can be included in the Vthand
VIthsemester.
3. Under books for study and in references foreign author books can be included.
4. Chemsketch and Chemdraw hands-on-training can be given to students.
5. PG self-study paper topics can be taken by students as seminar in the
form of power point under the supervision of a faculty.
Based on the suggestions given by various stakeholders, courses which have focus on skill
development, employability an entrepreneurship were introduced to make the students ready to be
effective employees or dynamic/smart employers. The details of these courses are given below.
