Sacramento Rivercats

Sacramento bats silenced in 9-2 defeat

The Sacramento River Cats (23-36) fell in the fourth and final game of their Highway 99 series Thursday

night against the Fresno Grizzlies (29-32) by a score of 9-2.

Sacramento showed a spark early, collecting three hits and scoring a run in the second inning thanks to a

sacrifice fly by Ali Castillo. The River Cats bats managed just four hits the rest of the way, however. Their

second run came on a solo home run off the bat of third baseman Ryder Jones. For Jones, it was his

seventh long ball of the season and his 23rd RBI.

Fresno found their stride in the second inning, tying the game at one on a Tyler White RBI-groundout.

They scored four runs in the fifth and three more in the eighth en route to their 9-2 victory. Sacramento

starter Chris Stratton yielded five of those runs over his 4.1 innings while walking three and striking out

three. His ERA climbed to 6.35 in the loss.

The River Cats will open a three-game series tomorrow night at Raley Field against the Reno Aces. Joan

Gregorio (3-4, 2.97), who owns the fourth-best ERA in the PCL, will take the mound for the River Cats.

For Reno, it will be Frank Duncan (5-4, 5.37). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. (PT) and the game can be

heard live online at rivercats.com and on the air on Money 105.5 FM.

Richmond Flying Squirrels

Squirrels Stay Hot With Series Win In Binghamton

Binghamton, NY - Richmond (24-34) exploded for six runs in the second inning on Thursday to help

support a solid outing from Matt Gage in a 6-3 rubber match win over Binghamton. Gage lasted seven

innings and retired the final 15 Rumble Ponies he faced to earn the win. The Squirrels plated all six runs

and collected all seven of their hits in the second inning. Slade Heatchcott and Jeff Arnold both launched

homers in the contest. Arnold's homer was a three-run shot while Heathcott's blast was his third in the

last three games. The win gives the Flying Squirrels consecutive series wins against a top-tier opponent.

Richmond has now won five of the past seven contests and look to keep it going in Altoona on Friday at

6:35 p.m.

The Rumble Ponies grabbed a brief 1-0 lead off of Gage in the bottom of the first inning. Gage recorded

the first two outs with ease before he ran into catcher Tomas Nido. Nido worked Gage for 12 pitches,

homering over the left field wall on the final offering for a 1-0 advantage.

Disaster struck for Binghamton in the second inning as the Squirrels erupted for six runs on seven hits.

The Rumble Ponies were forced to the bullpen early due to an apparent injury to staring pitcher Cory

Oswalt after the first inning. Kelly Secrest replaced Oswalt and scuffled as he was conscripted into

second inning duty. Jerry Sands started off the big inning with a double and C.J. Hinojosa followed with a

single. Brandon Bednar then tied the game 1-1 with a sacrifice fly to left. Richmond was just getting

started as Dylan Davis slammed a double and Jeff Arnold Launched a three-run homer deep over the left

field wall. Slade Heathcott added a solo home run and Sands connected on his second hit of the inning

to provide the 6-1 lead. Heathcott's homer was his third of the series and his tenth of the year.

The Ponies managed to chip away at the Richmond lead with a pair of runs in the third inning. Gage

allowed three consecutive hits to begin the frame, including an RBI double off the wall in right to Nido.

Kevin Taylor added a sacrifice fly to pull the Ponies to within three, 6-3.

Gage (3-4) picked up steam following the pair of runs in the second. The lefty went on to retire the next

15 batters to close out his outing. Gage struck out pinch-hitter LJ Mazzilli to close out the seventh inning

and finish his solid start. He allowed three runs on four hits to earn the win. He matched a season-high

with seven strikeouts and did not walk a batter in the victory.

Jarret Martin relieved Gage in the eighth inning and faced the minimum in his second outing with

Richmond. Martin earned the hold and Tyler Cyr closed out the contest with a 1-2-3 ninth. Cyr earned

his sixth save in as many opportunities.

Binghamton's bullpen pieced together the last eight innings of the game because of the abbreviated

start for Oswalt. Secrest lasted two innings and lefty Ben Griset backed him with 2.2 innings of work.

Ponies RHP Corey Taylor lasted 1.1 and Cory Burns finsihed off the final two innings.

The Flying Squirrels continue the six day road trip in Altoona on Friday evening. RHP Jordan Johnson (3-

3, 2.91) is scheduled to start against Curve RHP Alex McRae (4-1, 3.19). Richmond will return to The

Diamond for a brief three game series starting on Tuesday, June 13 against New Hampshire. Individual

tickets, mini plans and group packages are on sale by contacting the Richmond box office at 804-359-

San Jose Giants

Giants Bats Stay Hot In 7-3 Win Over Rawhide

VISALIA, CA - The San Jose Giants knocked out 15 hits for a second straight game en route to a 7-3 win

over the Visalia Rawhide on Thursday evening at Recreation Park. Heath Quinn and Ryan Howard each

homered while eight of the nine players in the Giants lineup recorded at least one hit. The series-

opening victory kicked-off San Jose's (26-34) final road trip of the first half.

Ronnie Jebavy (3-for-6, 2 SB) collected three hits while Aramis Garcia (2-for-5, 3B, 3 RBI) drove home

three runs to lead the Giants offensive attack. Howard (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI), Quinn (2-for-3, HR, RBI) and

Page 12: 06.9.17 Giants Organizational Report Clipsmlb.mlb.com/documents/4/6/2/235413462/06.9.17_Giants... · 2018-09-04 · The Rumble Ponies grabbed a brief 1-0 lead off of Gage in the bottom

Jonah Arenado (2-for-5, 2B) added two hits apiece while Bryan Reynolds (2-for-4) extended his hitting

streak to 16 games.

San Jose starter Matt Krook (2-6) earned the win after tossing five innings with three runs (all earned)

allowed. Krook, who twice pitched out of bases loaded jams, surrendered four hits, walked two and

struck out five during his 85-pitch outing. Carlos Diaz (3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO) and David Owen (1 IP, 1

H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) then combined for four scoreless innings of relief to seal the victory.

The Giants never trailed on Thursday as Quinn blasted a towering solo home run down the left field line

in the top of the second to give San Jose an early 1-0 lead. Howard then pushed the advantage to 2-0

when he belted a solo home run to left in the top of the third. The home runs were Quinn's sixth of the

season and Howard's fifth. Later in the third inning, Reynolds singled and later scored on a Dillon

Dobson two-out single for a 3-0 cushion.

Meanwhile, Krook began his night with two perfect innings before running into trouble in the bottom of

the third. Matt Jones struck out to start the inning, but reached safely on a wild pitch. Daniel Lockhart

was then hit by a pitch before Matt McPhearson walked to load the bases. Krook though escaped with

no runs scoring as Sergio Alcantara struck out and Jason Morozowski grounded into a double play to end

the inning.

The Rawhide though would breakthrough with a pair of runs against Krook in the bottom of the fourth.

Tyler Baker led off with a single before moving to second on a Marty Herum groundout. Krook then

uncorked a wild pitch advancing Baker to third. Henry Castillo followed by striking out, but another wild

pitch allowed the batter to reach first safely while Baker scored the first Visalia run of the game. Grant

Heyman was up next and he blasted a double off the fence in deep left plating Castillo to trim the Giants

lead to 3-2. Krook, however, managed to keep San Jose ahead as Jones flied out to right and Lockhart

struck out to finish the inning.

San Jose got one run back in the top of the fifth as Howard led off with a single and scored two batters

later on Garcia's one-out triple off the right center field fence. The RBI hit extended the Giants lead to 4-

2.

In the bottom of the fifth, Visalia scored once to crawl back within a run, but Krook left the bases loaded

to again keep San Jose in front. With one out, Alcantara singled before Morozowski reached on a Jalen

Miller fielding error at second. Baker then walked to load the bases. Herum was up next and he beat out

a slow roller up the first base line for an infield single as Alcantara scored to bring the Rawhide to within

4-3. Krook though escaped without further damage as Castillo hit a slow grounder to third that Arenado

barehanded and threw home to force out Morozowski for the second out. Heyman then grounded out

to first to end the inning as the Giants kept the lead.

San Jose then pushed across three runs in the top of the sixth to take control of the game. With one out,

Matt Winn doubled to deep right before Miller was hit by a pitch. Jebavy followed with an infield single

to load the bases before a Howard RBI groundout plated Winn with the first run of the frame. Reynolds

was up next and he was hit by a pitch to load the bases again. Garcia then stepped to the plate and

singled into shallow center bringing home both Miller and Jebavy for a 7-3 advantage.

Diaz relieved Krook to begin the bottom of the sixth and breezed through the next three innings to

maintain the four-run margin. Diaz pitched around a two-out walk in the sixth, a two-out single in the

bottom of the seventh and then worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning. The left-hander retired nine out of the 11

batters he faced.

Owen then closed it out in the ninth for the Giants. McPhearson led off with a single, but Owen induced

Alcantara to bounce into a force out before Morozowski grounded into a game-ending double play.

Rawhide starter Jose Almonte (4-5) suffered the loss after yielding four runs (all earned) on nine hits

over five innings. He walked two and struck out eight. Almonte had thrown 11 scoreless innings over

two starts against San Jose this season prior to Thursday.
