+ Assessment Update Here is the final instalment of my recent updates on assessment and testing of the new National Curriculum. Many of you will be aware that Key Stage 2 SATs tests take place for Year 6 pupils next week. These are important tests for pupils as they will inform their secondary education and be used by their new schools to arrange grouping and set targets. At Winton we make every effort to ensure that pupils know these tests are just a part of their education and that their time in school and their learning is far more than just what is covered in the tests. They are much more what we consider, as adults, to be tests than the type the children lower down the school sit. However we remind pupils all the time that they are just an opportunity for them to show off their skills and what they have learnt and as long as they give the tests their best effort everyone will be proud of them and they will feel proud of themselves. This year we will be serving breakfast before the tests and ensuring that the children are as calm and relaxed as possible and really do feel like it is their chance to show off their learning. Many of you will have seen the video about the changes to the tests this year and what the tests will look like. If you haven’t yet seen it go to the “Our Learning” tab of the website and click Year 6 then follow the link. It provides a quick and easy route to access a summary of the changes. Year 6 parents will receive, with their child’s report in July, the results of these tests and teacher assessments of where their child is working in relation to the new National Curriculum expectations for their age. It is important to realise this is now totally different to the Key Stage 1 results they got in Year 2 and no longer involves a child being given a level. Children will be judged as Working below age expectations Working towards age expectations Working at age expectations or Working at greater depth within age related expectations The parents will also receive their child’s score and scaled score from the test, with their report. The scaled score will be 100 for a child working at the expected standard, children may score higher or lower than a 100. As yet we do not know what the scale will go from, or to, as this cannot be calculated until children have sat the test and the results across the country have been collated. For children in Years 3-5 we will make similar teacher assessments and these will all use the interim frameworks that the Department for Education have published as the starting point for making the judgement. We remain in a transition period from one curriculum to another so children cannot yet be expected to have mastered the whole of the new curriculum. For example a child in Year 5 should have had 5 years of the curriculum by now but they have only been taught the new curriculum for 2 years. At Winton, across Key Stage 2, we will use a combination of tests and teacher assessment to reach the judgement for each child. Your child’s report will include the teacher’s judgement about where your child is working, in relation to expectations for their age. I do hope providing this overview has been useful for parents, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to pop in and see me, or another member of staff, to discuss them. Assessment Update

Here is the final instalment of my recent updates on assessment and testing of the new National Curriculum. Many of

you will be aware that Key Stage 2 SATs tests take place for Year 6 pupils next week. These are important tests for pupils

as they will inform their secondary education and be used by their new schools to arrange grouping and set targets. At

Winton we make every effort to ensure that pupils know these tests are just a part of their education and that their time

in school and their learning is far more than just what is covered in the tests. They are much more what we consider, as

adults, to be tests than the type the children lower down the school sit. However we remind pupils all the time that they

are just an opportunity for them to show off their skills and what they have learnt and as long as they give the tests their

best effort everyone will be proud of them and they will feel proud of themselves. This year we will be serving breakfast

before the tests and ensuring that the children are as calm and relaxed as possible and really do feel like it is their chance

to show off their learning. Many of you will have seen the video about the changes to the tests this year and what the

tests will look like. If you haven’t yet seen it go to the “Our Learning” tab of the website and click Year 6 then follow the

link. It provides a quick and easy route to access a summary of the changes.

Year 6 parents will receive, with their child’s report in July, the results of these tests and teacher assessments of where

their child is working in relation to the new National Curriculum expectations for their age. It is important to realise this

is now totally different to the Key Stage 1 results they got in Year 2 and no longer involves a child being given a

level. Children will be judged as

 Working below age expectations

 Working towards age expectations

 Working at age expectations or

Working at greater depth within age related expectations

The parents will also receive their child’s score and scaled score from the test, with their report. The scaled score will be

100 for a child working at the expected standard, children may score higher or lower than a 100. As yet we do not know

what the scale will go from, or to, as this cannot be calculated until children have sat the test and the results across the

country have been collated.

For children in Years 3-5 we will make similar teacher assessments and these will all use the interim frameworks that the

Department for Education have published as the starting point for making the judgement. We remain in a transition

period from one curriculum to another so children cannot yet be expected to have mastered the whole of the new

curriculum. For example a child in Year 5 should have had 5 years of the curriculum by now but they have only been

taught the new curriculum for 2 years. At Winton, across Key Stage 2, we will use a combination of tests and teacher

assessment to reach the judgement for each child. Your child’s report will include the teacher’s judgement about where

your child is working, in relation to expectations for their age.

I do hope providing this overview has been useful for parents, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to pop in

and see me, or another member of staff, to discuss them.

Children of Achievement

Imogen in 2SM completed a ‘Mini-Mudder’ race last weekend, Mini Mudder is a 1-mile

obstacle course, featured at all US, UK and Ireland Tough Mudder events, for children

under 13 years old and 42 inches (1.1m) tall and over. Mini-Mudder is not a race but a fun,

teamwork-oriented challenge. Well Done!

Congratulations to Joshua in 1LB for achieving his ‘Rainbow Distance 5M’ award in swimming this week!

Foundation

What Colour are your Knickers?

This week foundation stage have read ‘What Colour are your Knickers?’ by Sam

Lloyd. This is a very funny story which focuses on rhyming words. The children

have had a lot of fun innovating this story to create

their own versions.

They have also been investigating materials, naming and sorting them and

deciding which materials would be good to make pants.

Don't forget to design and make some pants for the aliens as your home

learning for this topic.

Mrs James, Head of School, Reception

Year 1 & 2

Year 1 have been busy working on their outside garden area. They have done

lots of planting and decorating of stones with minibeasts for the borders.

Please remember to fill in your availability for our garden workshops on

Thursday 26th and Friday 27th May and send slips back to school. They have

also sent a letter to Prince William asking him about the

conservation work he is doing for rhinos. Next week the

children will be making jeeps, so please make sure your child has got a

box in school to make the jeep out of.

In Year 2 this week, the children have been learning how to solve problems involving addition

and subtraction of money in maths. They have also been writing an exciting story based on

the animation 'The Happy Duckling' and have begun looking at instruction texts through the

humorous story 'How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth'. Work is continuing for the collection

of art work based on their topic of bees through sketching bees and creating decoupage

style pictures which look really effective!

Polite reminder: Year 2

Gates open at 8.30am, however……….

Parents are responsible for their children before 8.40 am and should not leave their children unattended until

staff are on playground duty at 8.40 am.

Year 3 & 4

This week, although shorter, has been jam packed full of learning!

Year 3 have been learning a new talking text and looking at features of non-

chronological reports so that they are ready to write their own report about the

Stone Age next week!

In maths they have been ordering and comparing fractions with the same

denominator. Please could you practise adding and subtracting fractions with the

same denominator at home together and also find fractions of amounts - making the links with division and

multiplication. This would really support learning in the classroom.

Many thanks also to all the children and staff from 4RCA who put on a fantastic parent class assembly on Tuesday to

share their learning. They also successfully managed to sell some sweets and share some tasty treats that they had made!

A reminder to all those children in Year 4 who are taking part in the swimming booster classes

this term, they will need their swimming kit every Thursday until May half term.

Year 4 are looking for crafty parents who might be handy with a

needle and thread as every child in Year 4 is attempting to make their very own hand puppet.

If you think you could volunteer some time in class please talk to your child's class teacher and

we can arrange a good time for you to come in, we would be very grateful.

Over the next week, the children are writing non-chronological reports about their chosen animal. It is therefore

extremely important that they have completed their research home learning and have their home learning book in

school every day.

Please ensure that you continue to practise daily reading and times tables at home together to further

support your child’s confidence. This will really help them apply these skills in all their learning at

school and enjoy success. Please ensure that reading diaries are brought to school each day and are

kept up to date for Sparkle Points.

Water bottles and named PE kits must be in school at all times please.

Mrs Lidster, Assistant Head, Year 3 and 4

Year 5 & 6 Year 5

If you would like your child to sit the Grammar School tests then you can now

register. Registration is open from Monday 11th April until Friday 9th September

2016 and the forms are available on the respective school websites. If you want

your child to be considered for both schools, either Bournemouth School for Girls

and Parkstone Grammar, or Bournemouth School for Boys and Poole Grammar,

you must put this on the registration form but your child will only sit the test once

at their nearest Grammar School.

Year 6

Year 6 have been working hard to set an excellent example to the rest of the

school of how to be 'Silent and Slow' in the corridors. Through doing this, they are

helping make our school a safer place. Well done year 6!

They have also been brushing up on all their reading, grammar and maths skills

before they sit their SATs next week. They should be really proud of the effort they have put in this year in preparing

themselves for secondary school. Have fun this weekend but ensure a good sleep ready for Monday morning!
