Influenza UpdateVictor J. Dzau, MD

As you may be aware, reports of influenza-like illness (ILI) have begun to increase over the last several weeks and, in particular, over the last few days. News reports at the end of last week documented an outbreak of ILI and, in fact, a number of confirmed cases of H1N1, among children attending summer camps on Duke’s East Campus. However, we have also begun to see cases of ILI among faculty, staff and patients.

While the increased rate of observed cases is not alarmingly high in the community, I felt it important to let you know that DUHS is working with the University and its camps to do everything we can to protect the welfare of the campers who have come to our campus, as well our faculty and staff. As part of that effort, the East Campus Brodie Recreation Center will be closed to faculty and staff until at least July 4, 2009.

Also, as has been the case since the first reports of H1N1, it would be wise to continue diligently practicing appropriate infection control practices, such as good hand hygiene. In doing so, you will be protecting yourself, your co-workers, patients, and the community.

All ambulatory clinics should continue to triage all incoming patients for symptoms of ILI and immediately place a surgical mask on patients identified with these symptoms.

As a reminder, any employee -- faculty or staff -- who develops flu-like symptoms -- fever, cough, nausea, fatigue, body ache, diarrhea or vomiting -- should not come to work. You are asked to remain home for at least seven days or 24 hours after resolution of all symptoms; whichever is longer. If employees develop symptoms while at work, employees should immediately call Employee Health at 684-3136 or after hours 684-8115.

If any of your family members become ill; please practice good hygiene at home and feel free to call Employee Health if you have any questions about symptoms you may develop and whether coming to work is advised.

This recent rise in cases is yet another reminder of the importance of practicing good infection control behaviors and using common sense when it comes to going out in public if you feel sick. Our faculty and staff should educate the public and model best practices in their community.

Comings and GoingsPlease welcome Monroe Wolf to the Department of Anesthesiology. She is a new Non-Duke Student/Intern working in Hyperbaric. Monroe started on June 22, 2009.
