FROM PASTOR MATTFROM PASTOR MATTFROM PASTOR MATTFROM PASTOR MATT. . .. . .. . .. . . I want you to think about something. In the following line of letters, cross out six letters so that the remaining letters, in sequence, spell a familiar English word. Ready? Here you go:

BSAINXLEATNTEASRS Do you have it? Sometimes, when we first look at a challenge, a solution is evident. Other times, however, it can take a second or even third look before an answer begins to emerge. Then there are those times when we are really stumped and we must not only look at the challenge before us from a different perspective, but we also find that we need to think in a way different than before. The solution to the above line of letters is as follows: Cross out “six letters” so that BSAINXLEATNTEASRS – SIX LETTERS leaves you with the word BANANAS. Did you get that? If this was your first time seeing this challenge, I imagine the solution was not apparent upon first glance. Sometimes we are asked to, “think outside the box” as it were in order to arrive at the answer. By no means does this suggest that the most obscure answer is always the best. Many times the most straightforward answer is correct. If you see hoof prints and the shadow of a horse cast upon the barn, don’t assume it is a zebra because it is probably a horse. There are those instances when we are indeed asked to really think about something if we hope to arrive at an answer to the questions posed. In Scripture, we find many questions for us as believers and followers of Christ. An influential pastor from my childhood wrote on the inside cover of his Bible, “The Bible questions us more than it answers our questions” While some of the questions have more obvious answers, there are some questions that are definitely a challenge. When reading passages of violence from the Hebrew Old Testament, one might hear the question, “Where is the grace of God in this reading?” Other times one may simply be asked, “What does this particular reading tell me about God and God’s relationship to humanity?” More often than not, these questions call for some deep examination. In the process, it may feel like we who dare to seek an answer are venturing onto shaky ground upon shaky legs, or worse yet, we are asked to get out the boat and walk on the water. Rest assured that when we are asked to do so, it is at the call of Christ who stands upon the water beckoning us to join Him. Similarly, you have been asked by the newly formed Planning Task Force to share your thoughts and opinions on a survey. From what I understand, this is just the first of surveys to come, but rest assured, it is to ensure that the Task Force and in turn, the Session, have the greatest sense of understanding before any decisions are made. I encourage you, when you fill out your surveys, to not only look for the obvious solutions, but to also think “outside the box” from time to time. It may be that some of the ideas shared seem a little bit crazy at first, only to realize that they hold some of the greatest potential. I imagine someone somewhere thought the idea of a little church outside of Fort Collins was crazy, but here we are, over 140 years later still gathering in worship and fellowship, sharing the Gospel with all who pass through our doors. So, as you read your Scripture and hear questions arise or as you fill out surveys and share ideas about Timnath Presbyterian Church and the ministry of Christ, don’t be afraid to give some extra time and thought to the questions. You may find the most obvious answer to be the best, but other times, feel free to dig deeper because you never know what you might find, even if the answer, at first, seems a bit bananas.

COLUMBARIUM &COLUMBARIUM &COLUMBARIUM &COLUMBARIUM & MEMORIAL GARDEN MEMORIAL GARDEN MEMORIAL GARDEN MEMORIAL GARDEN UPDATEUPDATEUPDATEUPDATE

Following the groundbreaking for the columbarium (to hold cremated remains) on October 19, 2014,

we have watched with interest as the structures took their form. The dedication of the memorial garden area, which consists of five kiosks and a remembrance wall, was held following our worship service on Sunday, May 24, 2015. It was wonderful that so many were able to join us for the outdoor dedication on a beautiful, sunny morning.

To give you a little bit of background, a Columbarium Feasibility Committee was approved by Session in September 2007. Our committee received permission to educate our church members about the benefits of having a columbarium, and to determine the level of interest. We researched the companies that supply columbarium services to churches, and felt that Homecoming, Inc., headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, provides the best product and services for our needs.

Following that, our committee a) determined the interest of church members, b) considered design, size and location, and c) estimated cost and options for financing. It was important that this project be financed independently, without impacting the church’s operating budget. We continued to gather information regarding the logistics of planning, building, and maintaining a columbarium, and scheduled several informational meetings with interested church members.

Several concepts were presented and discussed for an outdoor columbarium and memorial garden area. Architect Allen Curtis drew up numerous versions of the plans at no charge to the church. We also began compiling the rules and regulations associated with the development and ongoing ownership of a columbarium and memorial garden.

Because of the time commitments and landscaping changes due to the church rebuilding following the church explosion in August 2009, our plans were put on hold for much of 2009 and 2010. In 2011, representatives of the Columbarium Committee completed a survey of households close to the church, as requested by the Timnath planning board, and found that there was no opposition to the proposed columbarium design and location from our neighbors in Timnath. The columbarium proposal was also formally approved by The Presbytery of the Plains and Peaks on 7-16-2011, by our church Session, and by our congregation in a special meeting on 8-7-2011.

After submitting additional information to the Timnath Planning Commission throughout 2012, our columbarium site plan was approved by the Town of Timnath Planning Commission in July 2013. We moved forward with building permits and soliciting bids from several construction companies. Blueprints of the columbarium and memorial garden area were available for viewing, as well as a sample of the niches (boxes) and the granite face plates used in the columbarium and remembrance wall structures.

To date, our church members have purchased twenty-two niches and fourteen remembrance wall plaques. The granite face plates have been added to the largest kiosk, which holds a set of 80 niches. The four smaller kiosks were constructed at the same time, and will have niches inserted into the structures as the need arises. In the meantime, they will have painted panels on the front to give a finished look. The first section of the remembrance wall plaques is also in place. A memorial book is planned so that family members can share more information about their loved ones.

As funds allow, our committee will proceed with several more phases of the memorial garden area, including a metal pergola, seating areas, and additional landscaping. There will also be costs involved with the continuous upkeep of the area. Contributions will always be welcome, either given to the columbarium committee directly, or earmarked through a contribution to Timnath Presbyterian Church. As a reminder, the columbarium funds are kept separate from the general operating fund of the church.

The Columbarium Committee will continue to accept applications for niches and remembrance wall plaques, and answer any questions, on an ongoing basis. The columbarium policies, as well as a price list and application forms, are available in the narthex, or via email from Phylis Sitzman ([email protected]). (continued)

(Columbarium continued) We are very grateful to have the columbarium as a new outreach that is offered to church members and their families. Thank you for supporting this project, which we feel will greatly enhance the church grounds and will allow our church to better serve the life-long needs of our members. FROM MISSION COMMITTEE...FROM MISSION COMMITTEE...FROM MISSION COMMITTEE...FROM MISSION COMMITTEE... First of all, a HUGE THANK YOU to the entire congregation for your enthusiastic and generous support of Mission projects so far this year! With your help we fed 35 families at Easter – families with at least 100 children among them! We thank you for helping tie blankets for Crossroads Safehouse. We thank you for the individual sized toiletries that we have taken to the Fort Collins Rescue Mission where

they were put to immediate use. Thank you for your terrific support of the Peace Offering, and of the Pentecost Offering. 40% of the Pentecost Offering will be used to supply new little backpacks to Timnath Preschoolers in the classes

starting in August. Thank you for perusing the book table and acquiring new reading materials for a free-will offering. We donated $106 for a memorial bench to be installed at Timnath Elementary School to honor the short but beautiful life or Jesus Rodriquez, a student in the preschool, who died in a car crash in December. Contributions from the book table for May will benefit the Food Bank of Larimer County and the summer collections will benefit our seminarian fund. We truly appreciate your ongoing support! We are planning to have our Triple Back to School Drive from mid-July through mid-August. We will collect school supplies for Timnath Elementary School to be used by all teachers in all grades, as the need arises for individual children who cannot afford their own. We will also collect facial tissue boxes of any brand for Timnath Preschool, with a goal of 50 boxes (a years’ supply for the two preschool classes). And we will be collecting food for McBackPacks, Inc. a nonprofit organization that supplies weekend food during the school year to families of children who are on the

free-lunch program. Most of these families are “food insecure” – they do not necessarily know where their next meal is coming from – so often there is limited food on the weekend. Studies have shown that little children who are less hungry at the end of the weekend will do better in school. Over 380 bags of food are delivered to Poudre School District schools each week. Timnath Elementary School is third of thirty-eight PSD schools in the number of bags received – between 20 and 25 families at Timnath School benefit from this program every week of the school year. (Bethke School does not receive any at this time.)

McBackPacks especially needs protein items, such as canned tuna fish, canned chicken, peanut butter, and oatmeal packets. Other useful donations are

individual meals, snack bars, pudding and fruit cups that can be used by recipients with limited access to cooking facilities. Donations of cash may also be made to McBackPacks through our church. You will be seeing reminders about our Triple Back to School Drive in the next newsletter and in the church bulletins in July and August. The Mission Committee thanks you in advance for your donations. They are very much appreciated! The Mission Committee joyfully welcomed two new members in May – Karen Fischer and Eursa-Lynn Schueler. We are delighted to have them abroad! Our next meeting is on August 6 in Fellowship Hall at 10 AM. We hope you can join us!

Submitted with love and gratitude to all of you,

Sue Siferd, Mission Committee Chair
