Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has recognised Detective Inspector Adeniyi Collins Oremule in her 2012 New Year’s Honours List.

Detective Inspector Oremule receives the Colonial Police Medal (for Meritorious Service) (CPM) in recognition of being an exceptional investigator with an outstanding commitment to helping and supporting victims and witnesses of crime.

He is cited as having regularly demonstrated outstanding attributes as a public servant who is dedicated to protecting his community above and beyond the normal call of duty.

Mr Oremule was born in Ogun State, Nigeria, in 1966 but spent most of the early part of his life in Lagos city. He spent some time travelling through Europe and then applied to join the RCIPS after coming to the Cayman Islands in 1996.

“I joined as a uniformed officer, working on shift at the George Town Police Station. After about one and a half years I was transferred to the C.I.D, as a Detective Constable,” he said.

After spending several years working in George Town, Mr Oremule was transferred to Bodden Town police station, where he was put in charge of the C.I.D operation. After a couple of years, he came back to George Town when, after sitting some exams, he was promoted to Detective Sergeant.

From there, Officer Oremule was put in charge of the West Bay C.I.D, just at a time when gangland shootings and burglaries were erupting.

“There were a lot of shootings and burglaries. It was a very challenging time,” he said.

“I am very proud and delighted to be selected for this high award from

Her Majesty the Queen. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the nomination. “To be honest, it was a big surprise – the job has to go on, and people need to get justice. I always remember the RCIPS motto, ‘We care, we listen and we act.’ I feel I’ve put that motto into operation to the best of my ability,” he said.

Quake hits Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — A 5.3-magnitude earthquake has struck the southern coast of the Dominican Republic without causing any reported damage or loss of life.Local rescue officials and the U.S.

Geological Survey say the earthquake struck at 5:35 a.m. local time Thursday, and its epicenter was six miles deep (10 kilometers) in Ocoa province, 34 miles (55 kilometers) west of the capital of Santa Domingo.Rescue official Juan Manuel

Mendez says his group has not received reports of damages or of people hurt and has not issued any tsunami warning. Mendez says there were reports of hundreds of frightened people rushing out of their houses in various cities, including Santo Domingo.

Tuna fetches record $736K in Tokyo

TOKYO (AP) — This tuna is worth savoring: It cost nearly three-quarters of a million dollars.A bluefin tuna caught off northeastern

Japan fetched a record 56.49 million yen, or about $736,000, Thursday in the first auction of the year at Tokyo’s Tsukiji fish market. The price for the 269-kilogram (593-pound) tuna beat last year’s record of 32.49 million yen.The price translates to 210,000 yen

per kilogram, or $1,238 per pound — also a record, said Yutaka Hasegawa, a Tsukiji market official.Though the fish is undoubtedly

high quality, the price has more to do with the celebratory atmosphere that surrounds the first auction of the year. The winning bidder, Kiyoshi Kimura,

president of Kiyomura Co., a sushi restaurant chain, said he wanted to “liven up Japan” and help it recover from last year’s devastating tsunami and economic stagnation, according to media reports. The tuna was caught off Oma, in

Aomori prefecture and just north of the coast that was battered by the March 11 tsunami.

“I am in discussions today and tomorrow and will have something soon, and should be back in the next couple of days,” he told iNews Cayman yesterday. Mr Solomon is in Jamaica with Premier McKeeva Bush and others for the inauguration of Portia Simpson-Miller, elected Prime Minister last week.

Mr Solomon had earlier told iNews Cayman he expected to complete the agreement in early February, ahead of the 31 March deadline mandated in the 30 November extension of the June CHEC-government memorandum of understanding.

Capt Ebanks said: “The only reason they want to place the docks in George Town is because that is where the stores are, and the guys that own them have what we call a ‘wheelbarrow mentality’. We used to roll drums of kerosene off the boats and right up to the stores in a wheelbarrow,” he said, describing longstanding beliefs

that passengers must disembark on downtown doorsteps.

Mr Bush has repeatedly said he would pursue cruise berths in George Town, fearing for what he said were at least $35 million of investments in downtown commercial enterprises through the years.

“The decision is not about what’s best for the country,” Capt Bryan said. “It’s about what the downtown people want and the suspicions and fears of a couple of people. It is not good sense and it is not good business.

“I love my country,” he said, “but it’s so difficult to get people to commit themselves and come out in support.”

Red Bay plans call for a 16-acre artificial island in South Sound, encompassing a 6,000--square-foot turning basin for a five-berth cruise-ship dock, a 20-slip mega-yacht marina, cargo-working areas and a transport centre behind an eight-foot breakwater, all linked by two flyovers to a road network already gazetted by the National Roads Authority. The scheme calls for bus shuttles

to the downtown area, rebuilt to accommodate pedestrians.

While costs have not been indicated for the scheme, advocates say it will not exceed CHEC’s proposed $300 million for George Town docks.

The two four-berth piers, they say, encompass tens of thousands of square feet of CHEC-owned “upland” retail space, including restaurants and a hotel; closure of the Royal Walter Terminal for at least two years during construction; threaten environmental degradation from Pageant Beach to Jackson Point, including downtown flooding; and cannot be expanded in future.

“All we are asking is for people to inform themselves,” Capt Bryan said. “We ask only that an environmental impact assessment be done on both sites, and make sure what is right and what’s wrong. If we are wrong, then so be it.”

Before Christmas, Director of the Environment Gina Ebanks-Petrie said she was in talks with CHEC about an assessment, but was still awaiting a response.

Family killed in crash

A Canadian couple were rushing their toddler to hospital in Jamaica when their car collided with an oncoming truck, killing all three and another relative, police say.Local authorities said that at 6am

Wednesday, Garina and Diane Dixon and two-year-old Nekeil were driving from Willowdene to Spanish Town on the Caribbean island nation when their Toyota Corolla collided with a truck.Another woman believed to be the

child’s grandmother, Myrie Phillips, 45, was also in the car. All four were taken to hospital and later died, officials say.Garina Dixon, 27, Diane Dixon, 32,

and two-year-old Nekeil Dixon, all from Canada, died in the crash, police say. Their grandmother Myrie Phillips, 45, was also killed in the collision.According to a report in the Jamaica

Gleaner, Garina Dixon was driving along the old harbour main road to get Nekeil, who had stopped breathing, to the Spanish Town Hospital. The father tried to overtake traffic, and the car was hit by a truck travelling in the opposite direction, police say.Family members said the child had

developed breathing complications while at home and was being taken to the Spanish Town Hospital for treatment. “The father, in a desperate bid to save the child, jumped into his Toyota motor car with his wife and mother and rushed out to reach the hospital, unaware that the trip would be their last,” a grieving family said after the crash. One family member said the victims

had to be cut from the crumpled vehicle. The news of the deaths was especially hard for Myrie-Phillips’s husband, Gerald, who had reached home just a few minutes after the family left for the hospital.“Upon reaching home, he saw that

his wife left her phone and was rushing to bring the instrument to her when he saw the mangled wreck and later learnt that his family members were victims of the crash,” said a family friend, who disclosed that he has since been admitted to hospital after suffering from a nervous breakdown.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A landslide tore through a small-scale gold mining site in the southern Philippines on Thursday, killing at least 25 people and burying dozens more, months after government officials warned miners that the mountain above them was guaranteed to crumble.

The mountainside in Napnapan village in Pantukan township collapsed around 3 a.m., when most residents were asleep, sweeping away about 50 houses, shanties and other buildings, officials said.

Aside from those confirmed dead, more than 100 people were believed buried in the rubble, Compostela Valley provincial Gov. Arturo Uy said.

Scores of soldiers and volunteers were helping villagers dig for survivors and bodies, regional military spokesman Col. Leopoldo Galon said. The bodies of two girls aged 6 and 14 were among those retrieved, he said.

At least 16 people were taken to a hospital, with six in critical condition, Galon said.

Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon Paje said he had warned residents and local officials last year of a fissure on a ridge of the mountain that geologists said was “highly susceptible” to landslides that could occur anytime.

“We were absolute that it will give in,” he told The Associated Press. “It was a 100 percent warning. We told them it’s just a matter of time. ... This is it. This is what happened this morning.”

Pantukan town spokesman Arnulfo Lantayan said heavy rains were hampering search and rescue

work and increased the risk further slides “because there is still earth movement.”

Photos of the village taken by the army’s 10th Infantry Division after the landslide show a steep mountainside that looks like it was gouged by a giant shovel. Houses not buried by the rubble were lying on their sides while crumpled tin roofs and trees lay nearby.

One tunnel entrance appeared half covered by rocks and soil. It was unclear how many mine shafts have been blocked by debris.

Thousands of poor Filipinos dig and pan for gold in the area, hoping to strike it rich despite the dangers of largely unregulated mining. The tunnels are often unstable and landslides and accidents are common.

Saul Pingoy, a local resident, told DZMM radio that he was sleeping in a house about 50 yards (meters) away from the landslide when he felt the ground shake and heard rocks falling on roofs.

“The mountain itself was already sending a warning with falling rocks. That’s why we were woken up ... and then it collapsed,” he said. “Big boulders and the ground from the mountain covered the area.”

Darwin Aguinawon, a 27-year-old

logger, told reporters he heard what sounded like a “dump truck unloading gravel and sand” and seconds later his house tumbled down the slope. He saw a fellow miner tossed outside the house through where a wall once stood.

Compostela Valley province is on the main southern Philippine island of Mindanao, where flash floods triggered by a tropical storm killed more than 1,250 people in December. Uy, the governor, said miners and their families had been warned that the heavy rains made the small tunnels and mine shafts that honeycomb the hills and mountains more dangerous.

Uy said authorities advised residents as early as Dec. 16 when Tropical Storm Washi was sweeping across Mindanao to leave their tunnels, “but unfortunately some have not responded to our advisories.”

Hundreds of residents near the site of Thursday’s slide were forced to evacuate last April after a landslide killed about 20 people.

Uy said it was difficult to monitor the “extremely high risk area” because it is so remote and some residents who were evacuated in April may have “sneaked back.”

Paje said the April slide occurred in Kingking village beside Napnapan. Both villages are part of a 74,130-acre (30,000-hectare) watershed that has been scarred by landslides over the years.

He said the fissure discovered last year has been aggravated by rainwater saturation and continuous diggings by the miners.

He urged local officials to stop giving small-scale mining permits, now estimated to number about 3,000 all around the watershed.

“Had they listened to us and stopped the entry (of miners), there would have been no casualty,” he said.

Stephen Hawking to turn 70, defying diseaseCAMBRIDGE, England (AP) — British scientist Stephen Hawking has decoded some of the most puzzling mysteries of the universe but he has left one mystery unsolved: How he has managed to survive so long with such a crippling disease.

The physicist and cosmologist was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease when he was a 21-year-old student at Cambridge University. Most people die within a few years of the diagnosis, called motor neurone disease in the U.K. On Sunday, Hawking will turn 70.

“I don’t know of anyone who’s survived this long,” said Ammar Al-Chalabi, director of the Motor

Neurone Disease Care and Research Centre at King’s College London. He does not treat Hawking and described his longevity as “extraordinary.”

“It is unusual for (motor neurone disease) patients to survive for decades, but not unheard of,” said Dr. Rup Tandan, a neurology professor at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Still, Tandan said many longtime survivors had ventilators to breathe for them — which Hawking does not.

Hawking first gained attention with his 1988 book “A Brief History of Time,” a simplified overview of the universe. It sold more than 10 million

copies worldwide. His subsequent theories have revolutionized modern understanding of concepts like black holes and the Big Bang theory of how the universe began.

Texas police kill 8th-grader carrying pellet gunBROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — The parents of an eighth grader who was fatally shot by police inside his South Texas school are demanding to know why officers took lethal action, but police said the boy was brandishing — and refused to drop — what appeared to be a handgun and that the officers acted correctly.

The weapon turned out to be a pellet gun that closely resembled the real thing, police said late Wednesday, several hours after 15-year-old Jaime Gonzalez was repeatedly shot in a hallway at Cummings Middle School in Brownsville. No one else was injured.

“Why was so much excess force used

on a minor?” the boy’s father, Jaime Gonzalez Sr., asked The Associated Press outside the family’s home Wednesday night. “Three shots. Why not one that would bring him down?”

His mother, Noralva Gonzalez, showed off a photo on her phone of a beaming Jaime in his drum major uniform standing with his band instructors. Then she flipped through three close-up photos she took of bullet wounds in her son’s body, including one in the back of his head.

“What happened was an injustice,” she said angrily. “I know that my son wasn’t perfect, but he was a great kid.”

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Items as small as a hairpin and as big as a chunk of the Titanic’s hull are among 5,000 artifacts from the world’s most famous shipwreck that are to be auctioned in April, close to the 100th anniversary of the disaster.

Nearly a century after the April 15, 1912, sinking of the ocean liner that hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic, a New York City auction is being readied by Guernsey’s Auctioneers & Brokers.

That auction house has garnered headlines in the past by selling off such historical curiosities as prized Beatles

photos, famous jewels of the late Princess Diana, beloved Jerry Garcia guitars and a police motorcycle used in the Texas motorcade when John F. Kennedy was slain. But nothing as titanic as the so-called Titanic collection.

On April 11, all of the salvaged items are to be sold as one lot in what Guernsey’s President Arlan Ettinger describes as the most significant auction ever handled by that house.

“Who on this planet doesn’t know the story of the Titanic and isn’t fascinated by it?” he asked. “Could Hollywood

have scripted a more tragic or goose-bump-raising story than what actually happened on that ship?”

“It is as poignant to my 12-year-old son as it is to me and generations before me. There’s no end to the fascination about it.”

iEditorial OPINIONS

We have had our share of Christmas and New Year’s messages from HM Queen

Elizabeth II, HE Governor Duncan Taylor, Premier McKeeva Bush (2), Opposition Leader Hon. Alden McLaughlin and our Publisher, Joan Wilson. All the above were shown on CITN-Cayman 27, albeit when I watched the Christmas ones from the Governor, Premier and Opposition Leader at 12 noon, it was sound only as the video I was watching was of something else being repeated ad nauseam!

All the messages had a common thread - “hope” and “help”. HM The Queen centred on hope in times of adversity and Governor Taylor’s on ‘time’ and ‘helping others.’ Premier McKeeva Bush mentioned “love” and his UDP party giving “hope to our people in uncertain and hard economic times” in his first message. In his second message (on New Year’s Day) he also talked of “hope” and “turning it into reality” but it required “work” and “God helps those who help themselves.” There was certainly much to hope for as he gave a long list of all the projects that would hopefully come to fruition during 2012 and the groundwork and achievements Government had had in 2011. Alden McLaughlin believed the “birth of Christ still represents hope and promise and renewal.” He also spoke about helping others. Joan Wilson also spoke about helping others, never to give up and to make living a real blessing. She punched home the point that “leaders should lead” and “work together.” “We must put our “different opinions” aside.

Mrs. Wilson’s message was the only one that dwelt on the problems of crime and fear that has enveloped our society here over 2011. She asked these questions. “Is this really Cayman?” “Is this the country where I was born?” She said she really wanted to cry when she saw what has happened to her beloved Cayman Islands. She blamed it on us. “It is years of neglect and lack of moral teaching,” she opined. “Family life has almost disappeared. We are all so occupied with others above us on the money ladder.” And, children “mostly being cared for by a nanny and not taking enough time to talk to them. “Do we ever wonder what they are really doing with their time?” She said she “even hesitated in preparing this Christmas message.”

Finishing, however, on an upbeat note, she believed 2012 would “herald in a new beginning” and mentioned all the good things that happened in 2011 e.g. beautiful weather (no hurricanes), blessed with a “beautiful blue ocean” and “our beaches are rated number one in the world.”

It is difficult for me to say this because Joan is my wife and it sounds as if I am biased. However, other people have remarked on it, too. Of all the speeches I heard hers was not only the most passionate in content it was

her delivery of the words. Her voice showed so much emotion. Her final words led all of us sitting at home watching in tears. She said:

“I love Cayman, my home and family and I love you all.”

Note: the reason Joan Wilson gives a Christmas Message on the local TV station each year is she was the co-founder and chairman of CITN-Cayman 27 and has given her message since CITN started broadcasting in 1992.Another Message

Independent North Side MLA, Ezzard Miller, also gave his own New Year’s message saying, he believed that the major task for 2012 was getting “Caymanians who are unemployed to work and not creating more jobs for imported labour through the approval and selective solicitation of huge projects that will by their very nature provide limited job opportunities for Caymanians even if it provides great profit to the foreign investors.” Commenting on the premier’s New Year’s speech he also said the increase in government revenues over the last year is down to the investment of Cayman based firms in local development and not external investors. “Cayman’s economic recovery would depend on local developers and local businesses, which government should be encouraging. Whatever gains the treasury made in the last few months were down to Caymanians.

“With more than 19,000 people on work permits Cayman did not have a shortage of jobs. The problem is Caymanians are not considered capable of holding these jobs by the boards, which continue to grant work permits in the face of rising unemployment among Caymanians.”

I cannot agree with him on his comments in the last paragraph. What jobs is he referring to? A large proportion of work permits in the statistics are for jobs for domestics and the service industry. Jobs that a HUGE majority of Caymanians do not want. In every country there are natives of that country who do not want to work. They are unemployable. The same applies here. Believe it or not, we do have lazy, badly educated youngsters and even the more mature in our society who lack the necessary work ethics to obtain a job.

As an employer in a new business where every single dollar counts why would I employ an ex-pat with all it restrictions, additional costs and huge work permit fees over a Caymanian? I keep hearing of all these qualified Caymanians who are out of a job. Tell me who they are and what are they qualified at? Joan Wilson was a qualified Trust and Corporate Officer with Barclays and CITCO/Ansbachar and despite being a Caymanian rose to a managerial position and she was and is not the only one.

6 JAN 2012 | www.ieyenews.comOur Eye OPINION

I am no financial genius. I cannot even manage my own budget. I have always lived under capitalism. As I have gotten on in years I find myself asking questions about this system. I see bankers getting wealthier whilst the rest of us get poorer. The insane bonuses that some of them get after we, and I do mean WE, have had to bail them out from their mistakes. We are told by our capitalist governments, ‘the institutions they work for are too enormous for them to fail.’ So they do it again. Why should they care? It’s easy to take risks with other people’s money and if it goes wrong….. so what? That’s how it seems to me. Maybe one of our financial wizards reading this will shoot me down in flames … or discuss it with me over dinner – and they PAY for!

What is the meaning of capitalism? Wikipedia describes it as “an economic system that became dominant in the Western world following the demise of feudalism. There is no consensus on the precise definition nor on how the term should be used as an historical category. There is general agreement that elements of capitalism include private ownership of the means of production, creation of goods or services for profit or income, the accumulation of capital, competitive markets, voluntary exchange, and wage labour. The designation is applied to a variety of historical cases, varying in time, geography, politics and culture.” Further in the article it says, “Capitalism is generally viewed as encouraging economic growth?” Is all this clear to you? Most of us have lived our lives under a capitalist system and do we really understand it? The same article lists SEVEN types of capitalism with the seventh listed as ‘other’.

Does capitalism increase disparity of wealth?

Nowadays, thousands of envious extremists driven by rage, wage worldwide demonstrations against globalisation - the growing economic integration of the world, as trade, investment and money increasingly cross international borders.

What did the Peking barbarians of the 14th century do? They subsidised their farm products and sold them to us! Many fled and came to the Western world willing to work here for cheaper wages. It helped us, too. Increasing capital, output and even our salaries, enabling us to spend more.

Therefore, these extremists that rage war on us every day, shall face bitter judgments! If only they would see all the miracles and prosperity capitalism brings, they would repent and embrace the free market. Right? Maybe not.

Why do people oppose free market? Is it envy? Human nature, being what it is, and our preferences are fine-tuned for gene pool survival. That means we’re selfish and evil. You see, we women (well Georgina does - lol) prefer the rich. When one male gets many women, the others don’t get any. So when one male becomes successful, the others will get in the way!

That’s why I am convinced many people oppose capitalism. It’s not there to help the poor. It’s not there to improve the economy. It’s simply there to prevent you from getting rich. Capitalism does not cause disparity of wealth. Capitalism simply changes the way such disparity is earned.

In countries that oppose capitalism, like North Korea, wealth disparity exists anyway. The late Kim Jong il, simply got all the money by enslaving workers and his heir, Kim Jong-un is seen to be a copy cat of his father. And they are not alone in this. There is no such thing as 100% communism.

If countries would buy (at a fair price, of course) all the natural resources they require by trade, without any political interference, there would be no incentive to go to war. People like Hitler would never rise to power.

When we’re not at war, we’re in a race. That’s simply the way we evolve. Those who oppose free fair competition want the alternative. That’s, in a sense, is the root of all evil.

However, I haven’t really answered my own question, does capitalism cause wealth disparity?

Yes, it does, in a way most people don’t see. Due to envy, many capitalists are prosecuted. When ‘loose’ women pick a financially irresponsible ghetto stud, it’s a humans’ right. When ‘loose’ women pick rich smart males in clubs, it’s illegal due to anti prostitution laws (despite being consensual). The former requires you to pay tax to support their kids. The latter creates fewer dollars for the taxman.

So the most productive among us are often forced to inherit his wealth to just 1 child. The poor seem to split his wealth to 10 children. If we make the same amount of money, and I make 10 children, you make 1 child, which one is more successful? Does it make sense if my children then complain that your child is richer?

The terrorist cannot understand why we capitalists are often so nice we love even our enemies. They look for an ulterior motive and when they can’t find it they invent one. If we’re too nice, we’re not being fair. When we’re not being fair, we do not properly align our interests with other humans. When those running the fastest don’t hit the hardest, success will simply be a bridge to a gas chamber. History proves this.

With the growth of the Muslim population expected to increase by at least 35% within the next 20 years, perhaps we should encourage our truly endangered species, the capitalists, to make more kids, for everyone’s sake!

Yes, I still believe in capitalism, even though the major drawback is that bigger and richer capitalists can exploit their workers, and can prohibit other competitors from entering the market by monopolising resources. If this happens, the entire purpose of capitalism is destroyed, but sadly this is a very real occurrence. No matter what system of economy one employs, there will always be certain bad seeds and corporations that will try to take advantage of the weak and helpless. This is an inevitable evil of society, and even communism is not excused from this.

I await that dinner date!

Is capitalism an endangered species?Georgina [email protected]

Solving 9x9 sudoku puzzles

Sudoku begins with some of the grid cells already filled with numbers. The object of Sudoku is to fill the other empty cells with numbers between 1 and 9. Each number can appear only once on each row and column.

GOOD LUCK!

Apple have announced that the iPhone 4S will be available in the Cayman Islands. Untill now only a select number of countries were able to boast and flaunt their iPhone 4S.

But Apple has made the happy announcement that the iPhone 4S will become available in China, as well as 21 other countries, on Jan. 13.

The last Friday of January will see the iPhone 4S hitting the markets in Cayman as well as, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, Botswana, British Virgin Islands, Cameroon, Central African Republic, China, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Grenada, Guam, Guinea Conakry, Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritius, Niger, Senegal, St. Vincent and The Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos and Uganda.

This translates to the iPhone 4S selling in 90 countries at that point of time. Apple CEO Tim Cook will be rolling out the smartphone and calls this one the “fastest iPhone rollout ever.”

The iPhone 4S is said to be the main force behind Apple’s fiscal first-quarter results, that will be out on January 24.

Apple said in October that it sold 4 million iPhone units in the first three days after the launch of the 4S, which should help with its financial performance.

The iPhone 4S boasts voice recognition feature. Apple integrated Siri personal assistant application that the company took over last year on its iPhone 4S. Besides, it also offers iCloud cloud services, iMessaging, a revamped Safari browser, better newsstand browsing, a unique notification centre, and a whopping eight megapixel camera to take one’s breath away.

At its launch in the beginning of October, iPhone 4S became the fastest selling iPhone ever and topped 4 million in the first three days of availability. AT&T announced activating 1 million iPhone 4S devices on Tuesday, setting

a record for fastest selling iPhone on the carrier. Before that Sprint has stated that iPhone 4S has topped all previous one-day sales records for the company.

It runs on a dual core A5 processor and an upgraded GPU – which makes it a seriously refined gaming device – a new app lets you send physical postcards with a tap, and it is faster than any other phone around.

It is being touted as the best phone going by any yardstick.

iPhone 4S is the highest selling smart phone in the market and despite great strides made by Android smart phones, it remains the best smart phone available in the market right now. It comes with its outstanding features like iOS 5, iCloud, Siri voice recognition and innumerable other specialties that contain iMessage, Notification Center, Newsstand and much more. Cupertino based tech giant’s iPhone 4S comes with a 3.5-inch, 960 x 640-pixel widescreen multi-touch retina display. It is powered by a dual-core A5 chip processor and sports the new iOS 5 operating system, which the company claims offers faster web browsing and enhanced gaming experiences. Its camera is outstanding and the gadget is being loved by users across the world.

Even though I have been through a divorce I still feel it is one of the biggest epidemics in our current society that isn’t being recognised or treated as such. I think it is crazy for people considering divorce to get advice from a divorce attorney.

Who would go to a divorce attorney for advice about their failing marriage? Many people, unfortunately. I had no idea until I found my marriage crumbling around my ears and I asked friends who had gone through a divorce who to get advice from. They all said a divorce attorney!

I was overwhelmed by this advice for one primary reason. Have people considering getting a divorce forgotten that a divorce attorney is the very last person who will be concerned with them repairing a broken marriage? A divorce attorney makes a living helping married people get divorced while getting as many benefits from the divorce as possible. So why would any nearly divorced person go to a divorce attorney in hopes of fixing their marriage? Beats me.

My advice to anyone struggling in their marriage is to make an

appointment to visit a professional counsellor or a marriage and family therapist. This is because in general, counsellors and therapists are people who deeply want to see marriages and families restored rather than torn apart.

A divorce attorney is only for people who are sure that divorce is the option they are choosing. If, however, you are still unsure of your options and if you are still hoping for healing in your marriage, then a divorce attorney is the last person you should see. In my case it didn’t work going to a counsellor but it still was a better choice.

Our Eye OPINION

It is heartbreaking to me that so many women with big dreams get knocked down by ruthless business opportunists who take advantage of a woman’s passion and trusting nature by offering bogus business opportunities. Don’t get me wrong, it happens to men too; it just really frustrates me that us women who want nothing more than to operate a home-based business can be taken advantage of so easily and that those pushing the business scams don’t care about their ethics, about busting your budget, or diminishing your self-confidence.

If you want to find a business opportunity that is legitimate, you must be cautious in reviewing opportunities and make sure that you find a business that’s right for you. There is a general rule of thumb when trying to find a business possibility that will enable you to work-from-home while generating a significant income. That is, if an offer sounds too good to be true, most likely it is. Most times you will find a business offer that is presented in an inflated manner to be either a scam, or an incredibly exaggerated representation of the opportunity the business venture actually affords you.

There are some legitimate business opportunity packages out there, but honestly, they are few and far between. In most cases, you are better off crafting your very own business opportunity rather than trying to find a business opportunity that is prepackaged, turnkey and ready to go. A turnkey business opportunity is one that provides you everything you need to get started in business in a start-up package for a flat start-up fee, or at least claims to. Some of them have ongoing membership fees as well.

Of course, there are some companies that offer true turn-key opportunities like distributorships or multi level marketing plans where you sell their products for them, usually through party plans, and recruit other representatives for a percentage of fees. You may find a business like this appealing because it is a package deal that is easy to start-up and generally

has good support through the company and an up-line. Sounds good doesn’t it?

Unfortunately, not every multi level marketing opportunity is a legitimate business opportunity. Many are fraudulent pyramid schemes, designed to part the unwary from their money, and disguised as multi level marketing opportunities. The big difference between multi level marketing and a pyramid scheme is in the way the business operates. The entire purpose of a pyramid scheme is to get your money and then use you to recruit other victims (distributors). The entire purpose of multi level marketing is to move product.

It is a Pyramid scheme if a) you are required to “invest” a large amount of money up front to become a distributor; b) you have to pay for inventory, but the company will not buy back unsold inventory; c) the company doesn’t seem to have any interest in consumer demand for its products; d) there is more emphasis on recruitment than on selling the product or service; e) the plan is designed so that you make more money by recruiting new members rather than through sales that you make yourself; and f) you are offered commissions for recruiting new members.

The legitimate businesses of this nature are well-known - Avon, Home Interiors, Herbalife, Tupperware, and Mary Kay, for instance. You really can make money in these types of businesses while maintaining control over your own work schedule if you are willing to give it your all.

However, often it is best just to

craft your very own business idea, business concept and business plan, and to strike out on your own. The following should point you in the right direction for developing your very own business ideas:

If you are going to spend a large amount of your time operating your business, doesn’t it make sense to find a business idea that incorporates something you enjoy? Brainstorming for ideas based on your personal interests is a great start to launching, owning and operating a satisfying business.

If you can find a business idea that uses talents, gifts, knowledge or skill that you already have, it will be much easier for you to get your business started quickly, and to operate it efficiently.

Everyone has unexplored interests. If there is something that you are interested in learning more about or activities you would like to engage in, these interests can be great to pursue as business ideas. Search your heart and you are sure to find a business idea that will be just perfect for you.

Of all the potential business ideas you have generated, which one is most likely to be the best business opportunity?

To answer this question, you need to do your market research. Evaluate the competition, find a marketing niche, and determine whether or not you can make money with the ideas that you have. By following the above advice you will definitely find a business opportunity that will be both fulfilling and profitable.

How to manage work stress especially for women

Georgina [email protected]

Women are more prone to workplace because of the many roles they play in life: as career woman, wife, mother, daughter, and friend. Women work way beyond the 9-5 shift, often having to rush home to cook dinner, help the kids with homework, and prepare the next day’s office attire for the hubby. The stress and anxiety caused by endless tasks and impossible deadlines in a high-speed, high-tech world has made women’s lives a living web of complexity.

The question is: How can women cope with stress and anxiety? The first step is to dissect the problem and understand how these psychological and emotional conditions make women’s lives more difficult.

Stress is a combination of fatigue, restlessness, depression, over-focusing, and over-all gloominess that is a consequence of overwork and other domestic or personal problems. The difficulty of trying to balance time between work and the home has caused many women to suffer from stress. Personal or relationship issues like divorce or separation have also been the cause of anxiety panic attacks among women. Women who own and manage their own business are also prone to stress. Their high drive for business success cannot always protect them from times of depression and overwork. Career women, on the other hand, have to confront office politics, gender discrimination, sexual harassment, and the fear of being laid-off.

But there’s still hope for over-worked, stressed women. Here are some practical ways for women to reduce and manage work-related stress:1. Put up relaxing scenes- It could be a poster or a small painting with beautiful scenery. You can even download screen savers of beaches, waterfalls, clear lakes and other scenes that help create a serene mood.2. The To-Do-List- Use that Post-Its or other stick-on note pads. Color-code your notes and even put up an ìalarmî

in your computer to remind you of priority tasks. The key is to know what to do first.3. Time out - As they say, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Take some time out to take a breather. Do way from reading emails the mostly junk. Do stimulating activities like Sudoku or Brainteaser. Reading some inspirational books like Chicken Soup for the Soul.4. Rearrange your workstation - Add some “homey” look to your workstation... put up photo frames of your family or favorite pet. When ever you feel stressed out just glance at their happy faces or cuteness ---and you’ll find yourself smiling back!5. When a plant isn’t just a plant - Having a plant around your workplace is good stress relief. Studies show that looking at something green like a plant helps soothe your eyes after facing the computer monitor all day or after reading for a long time. Focusing on a green plant will have a soothing effect.6. Exercise - Walking, climbing the stairs, or going out to run helps fight stress. Physical activity help get rid of tension. During a workout, your body releases endorphins which helps your body to relax. Endorphins also act as natural pain killers. There are a lot of exercise videos that you can use ranging from the standard aerobics to pilates, tae-bo, and a host of other fitness programmes.

7. De-clutter- A cluttered workstation like pens, pencils, notepads, tons of papers spread around every inch of your work place adds to your stress. Make your work environment more appealing by organizing your things and throwing away things you no longer need.8. Set Boundaries - Communicate and assert yourself, make your co-workers know when you are more available for chit-chat.9. Go less in your caffeine intake - caffeine even is popularly known as a stimulant, too much of it adds to stress even leads to depression.

10. Eat a good breakfast- Don’ skip meals even if you are indeed in a hurry. Studies shows that if you make it a practice to eat breakfast every day, you’re body gets more the needed proteins to give you an energy boost to face the working day.

Beat work-related stress without beating yourself up. Learn how to relax. Sure...we have duties and responsibilities but if you don’t learn to relax---burn out is what you get! Make an effort to relax. Listen to good music. Try not to smoke. Because if you don’t watch out, the results would be hypertension...depression... and a plethora of other ailments that can sidetrack your career and home life. It’s time to regain a sense of balance if you want to stay alive for a long, long, long time.

CUC unaware of budget rebate plansTad Stoner

continued from front page- which opens on 1 July - would be $1,500 levy on “master funds” in the hedge fund industry. The initiative, he said, would raise $4.5 million, which would be applied to consumer rebates on electricity bills.

He provided no details beyond saying the rebates ”will reduce the monthly cost that residential customers incur for their consumption of electricity, and the Electricity Regulatory Authority will work closely with CUC to monitor the savings transfer to residential consumers”.

Meanwhile, economists said they had been astonished by the turnaround in government finances announced by Mr Bush and waited eagerly to see detailed appropriations figures, due later today.

One analyst, asking anonymity, said that even if the budget numbers were not precise, the administration’s internal accounting was “pretty good, pretty accurate”.

“The internal numbers they have are not too bad. Even the PPM [the previous People’s Progressive Movement government] had internal figures that were not bad. Even if you allow a margin of error, this is reasonable. It’s not so wrong that you

can’t recognise what Mr Bush is saying.“I would say this is not far off, and

you have to acknowledge that he has actually accomplished something. Isn’t it remarkable?” the analyst asked.

Mr Bush’s plan brings the Cayman Islands from an $81 million 2009-10 deficit to a modest $4.5 million 2010-11 surplus and projects a $12.1 million 2011-12 surplus.

While the $12.1 million may not be entirely realised, the analyst pointed out, Cayman’s original three-year budget plan called for a $10 million surplus.

Mr Bush projected $535.8 million in 2011-12 revenues and $489.9 million in expenditures, with 84 days of reserves, only six days short of the 90-day legal requirement. While the local economy had contracted by 11% in the last two years, he said, it would grow 1.5% next year, 2.3% the following year and as much as 2.5% in 2013-14.

PPM MLA for East End Arden McLean said he had not finished examining Mr Bush’s numbers, but wondered if Cayman really had outclassed larger and more globalised economies.

“Very few countries in the world are in a surplus position,” he said.

“Look at America and the UK. Are we really that good? It would be a miracle to take this country out of nearly $100 million in debt, but this accomplishment outmaneuvers and outsmarts everyone.”

Conceding to a modest strain of sarcasm, Mr McLean nonetheless worried about the administration’s proposed suspension of accounting principles in the Public Management and Finance Law (PMFL) and the unemployment rate.

“The whole country should be a little troubled about that, and he [Mr Bush] is very convincing about the millions of dollars in surplus, but [without the PMFL], he can’t prove it.

“There are at least 2,000 people out of work. The government may not feel it, but the people are feeling it and I am too. What, is everyone working? Is no one hurting? I don’t see that,” Mr McLean said.

Lebron and KRI scored big points at HarquailKevin Creary

Some of the Cayman Island’s brightest young talents seized the spotlight in front of hundreds of people at the 2011 Talent Xposition at the Harquail Theatre.

The event held in aid of The Self Help Community Foundation was completely crammed and the excited crowd lined up well in advance to experience the talent in store. In fact the event was so busy that many patrons had to stand up for the entire duration of the show.

Lloyd Barker opened the show with an excellent rendition of the Cayman National song, after being introduced by MCs Lee Ramoon and Andrel Harris.

Winner of the prestigious “Young Talented Stars” honour, LeBron McLean, brought the house down with a scintillating display of dancing skills and on

stage confidence. Accompanied by a young, talented, female dancer Lebron was all the rage. The duo certainly got the loudest screams from the crowd and they were worthy of them.

The KRI Performing Arts group was also a dominant force and the crowd couldn’t get enough of them. Kurt Rowe, director of KRI, this year again lived up to the grand expectations.

A drama piece by a young Caymanian, Jevaughnie Ebanks, which spoke to the importance of recognising and preserving Cayman’s heritage, received very good response.

Other good performances came from Dru Bodden; Michelle T; The YTA Acapella; The UCCI Dancers, Rapper Jiggz Jay; Beniel Miller; Kenroy Millwood; George

Town Primary Dancers; and Stephen Aleria, guitarist and singer, John Gray High School.

The overall result was certainly one to be proud of and the support for the show carried through 'til the very last act.

THE BRAKE SYSTEM IS YOUR CARʼS MOST IMPORTANT SAFETY SYSTEM.

REGULAR BRAKE INSPECTIONS are the best way to ensure safe and

reliable braking. Always have your brake linings, drums and rotors, and

brake uid inspected. The parking brake should also be checked for

proper operation and adjustment. The typical “brake job” consists of

brake pad and/or shoe replacement, along with related hardware.

Below are some questions to ask when this service is being

performed on your car:

1. Is there anything I can do to help the brakes on my car last longer?

2. What does the brake warning light mean on my car’s dashboard?

3. How does the work being performed eliminate the symptoms my car exhibited or my complaint?

4. Are there any related services my car needs while this service is being

performed?

Penny Palfery - she’s a record breaker

After 40 hours and 41 grueling minutes Penny Palfrey swam her way into the world record books.

The 48 year old Australian set a new world record for the longest solo unassisted ocean swim.

And not satisfied with just beating the previous record, Palfrey smashed it by a staggering four extra miles.

One fear the marathon swimmer faced was the serious threat of sharks during her trip, and four Oceanic White Tips were killed during the swim.

Hundreds of supporters had gathered on the beach outside Morritt’s resort, East End to welcome her home.

Exhausted but elated, and with a face clearly swollen from such a gallant effort, Palfrey emerged from the water to a rapturous reception.

After setting off just before 5.30am on Saturday morning, she came ashore at exactly 10.07pm – and entered the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame.

After receiving the all clear from medics, Palfrey went back to her

Cayman home for some much needed R&R.

The swim was inspired by Frank Flowers and his daughter Dara Flowers-Burke who together worked for a year to raise sponsorship and organise the swim.

It kicked off next week’s Flowers

Swim from Royal Palms when more than 800 people are expected to hit the water for the one mile swim to raise money for charity.

And not content with just breaking the record, Penny will be back in the water on Saturday to take part in the Flowers event.

Tragic boater was father of police officerPaul Kennedy

A boater who died when his vessel capsized was the father of a serving RCIPS officer, police have revealed.

Oscar Shaw was just 600 metres from shore when the 16-foot boat got into difficulties in heavy seas.

Three other people who were in the boat at the time escaped uninjured but despite attempts from Sunset Divers, Mr Shaw later died.

The drama unfolded shortly before 4pm on Saturday. Officers onboard the police helicopter – patrolling the area because of a previous incident – spotted the vessel in trouble near Dart Park in South Sound.

Police have also praised the crew of the dive boat and said their help prevented more fatalities.

A spokesman for the RCIPS said:

“We can confirm that the boater who died, Oscar Shaw, was the father of a serving RCIPS officer, and the Commissioner and all staff wish to express their condolences on this tragic accident.”

“The Police Helicopter was monitoring the South Sound area off Dart Park from a previous marine incident, along with RCIPS marine officers on land, when the crew saw a 16 foot boat some 600 metres off shore in heavy seas.

“While the helicopter crew communicated information on the boat’s condition and sought assistance, the vessel was seen to capsize in seconds in a large wave, putting all four occupants in the water.

“In difficult sea conditions, the

Sunset Divers boat crew threw out buoyancy vests and life rings to the boaters and commenced a rescue of all four who were drifting apart.”

Marine Unit officers attended the location on jet skis to assist in a further search with the helicopter for a fifth person believed missing from the previous kite surfing incident, but this person was traced safe and well having swum safely shore.

Chief Inspector Martin Bodden jr said “The response and the efforts of the Sunset Divers staff, who were close to the scene, prevented this tragic accident being even worse, and indeed they should be commended for their continued efforts to give all four victims their best possible chance of survival.”

Cayman’s top detective announces gun amnestyKevin Creary and photos Gabrielle Myers

Detectives have announced that the month of July will be a gun amnesty – allowing people to hand in firearms and ammunition with no questions asked.

From Friday people with unlicensed, unwanted and illegal guns or bullets can deposit them at police stations in George Town, West Bay, Bodden Town and Cayman Brac police stations.

Announcing the amnesty, Detective Superintendent Marlon Bodden, head of the RCIPS Criminal Investigation Department, said that

he hoped that this year’s amnesty would mirror the success of the 2010 campaign.

The firearm reduction strategy in 2010 was from the 10th May to the 10th June.

It was a major success: 26 firearms and 233 rounds of ammunition were handed in.”

In expressing the significance of the accomplishment he explained that the recovery of even one firearm goes a long way in saving lives and reducing crime.

“The recovery of one firearm is a

success,” said Mr. Bodden.Mr. Bodden also added that he

hoped this year’s strap line ‘Our ten year plan’ would encourage everyone on the Islands to work together for a safer Cayman.

“Last year the crime landscape in the Cayman Islands was somewhat different,” he said. “We launched the 2010 amnesty against a backdrop of gun killings and gang violence. This year we face the challenge of armed robberies where local businesses are being targeted for cash.”

MIAMI (AP) — LeBron James had 33 points and 13 assists, Chris Bosh added 22 points and the Miami Heat hardly missed Dwyane Wade in a 118-83 rout of the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night.

James also grabbed eight rebounds and the Heat turned up the defensive intensity without their star guard. Wade sat out with a sore left foot, and his status for Thursday’s game at Atlanta is uncertain.

Roy Hibbert had 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead Indiana. Tyler Hansbrough scored 14.

Wade, a six-time All-Star, injured his foot in the second quarter at Charlotte on Dec. 28. He missed the first 10 minutes of the third period but played regular minutes the rest of the game and in the two that followed. He skipped Wednesday’s shootaround, though.

The Heat had a scare late in the third quarter when James went down underneath the basket with an apparent left ankle injury.

James appeared to step on the foot of Indiana’s Paul George while attempting a fast-break layup. But after staying on the court for a few seconds James got to his feet, prompting applause from the sellout crowd, and resumed breaking down the Pacers.

Indiana, a fashionable pick to be one of the surprise teams in the East, had a miserable second quarter, going 1 for 15 from the field and committing 10 turnovers that Miami turned into 10 points.

Miami took a 62-39 halftime lead thanks to a 25-6 run to close the second quarter.

Indiana’s main problem, however, was that it couldn’t slow Miami’s transition offense. And because the Pacers shot so poorly and committed so many turnovers, all the Heat had to do was grab the ball and start running, and they did it quite successfully.

The Pacers trailed 29-27 after the first quarter. But in the second half,

they never got closer than 12 points and the lead eventually ballooned to 36.

Indiana’s Danny Granger scored only six points on 2-for-13 shooting. He missed six of his seven shots in the first half and committed three turnovers.

The Pacers ended up shooting 34.8 percent from the field. They committed 23 turnovers that Miami turned into 28 points.

MIAMI (AP) — As the West Virginia Mountaineers celebrated their first Orange Bowl victory, safety Darwin Cook shared a hug with the game’s mascot, Obie.

They had run into each other earlier in the end zone when Cook scored the night’s pivotal touchdown, then leaped on the smiling orange. Only after the game did he learn a woman was wearing the Obie outfit.

“I didn’t know you were a girl,” he told her. “I apologize.”

The Mountaineers ran over everything in their path Wednesday night, including the Clemson Tigers. Geno Smith tied the record for any bowl game with six touchdown passes, and the No. 23-ranked Mountaineers set a bowl scoring record with their high-powered offense by routing No. 14 Clemson 70-33.

But it was a defensive player — Cook — who made the most memorable play by returning a fumble 99 yards for a touchdown to break the game open.

Standing in the sideline, Smith watched a video replay of Cook’s touchdown in disbelief.

“Crazy, man,” Smith said. “When I saw that, I knew things were breaking our way.”

Cook collided comically with mascot Obie after scoring one of the Mountaineers’ five TDs in the second quarter, including three in the final 2:29 for a 49-20 lead. It was the highest-scoring half by a team in a bowl game.

“I always envisioned making great plays,” Cook said. “If you think it will happen, it will happen.”

Tavon Austin tied a record for any bowl game with four touchdown catches. Smith went 31 for 42 and had 401 yards passing to break Tom Brady’s Orange Bowl record. Smith also ran for a score, helping West Virginia break the bowl record for points established six nights earlier when Baylor beat Washington 67-56 in the Alamo Bowl.

“Never could we imagine we’d put

up 70 points,” Smith said.“It was like a virus,” Clemson coach

Dabo Swinney said. The Mountaineers (10-3) won in

their first Orange Bowl appearance and improved to 3-0 in Bowl Championship Series games.

“Our guys felt like they weren’t getting too much credit,” West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said. “And they wanted to make a statement in this game.”

Clemson (10-4) lost playing in its first major bowl in 30 years. Despite the drubbing, Swinney said, the wait for a return trip won’t be so long.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Ottawa Senators are assured of having at least four familiar faces on the ice when they host the NHL All-Star game this month.

Defenseman Erik Karlsson led all vote-getters in fan balloting, and captain Daniel Alfredsson and fellow forwards Milan Michalek and Jason Spezza were also elected for the game on Jan. 29.

The NHL said Thursday they will be joined by Toronto defenseman Dion Phaneuf and Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas in the starting lineup.

The four Senators hold the top four spots on the club’s scoring list, with Spezza leading the way with 40 points — three more than Karlsson. However, Karlsson topped everyone in the league with 939,951 votes, 42,536 more than Alfredsson. Michalek got his spot with a late rush, beating out Toronto’s Phil Kessel by 42,144 votes. Kessel had been in line for a place in the starting lineup all during the voting period.

About 24 million votes was cast by fans from Nov. 14 until Jan. 4 in the all-digital balloting, a 66-percent increase over last season. It is the third-highest total since voting went to an exclusive digital format in 2007.

Missing from the initial list of stars are Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos, who leads the NHL with 27 goals, along with Rangers forward Marian Gaborik, Kessel, Jonathan Toews of Chicago, and Pittsburgh’s James Neal — the next four top goal scorers ahead of Michalek.

None of the NHL’s top 10 point scorers this season were voted into the game by fans. Spezza is tied for 11th in scoring with 40 points.

The remaining 36 All-Stars will be chosen later this month, and the two team rosters will be determined for a second straight year by the fantasy draft during All-Star weekend. Each team will have 12 forwards, six defensemen and

three goalies.Phaneuf will join the 21-year-old

Karlsson on defense after garnering 614,933 votes. The Senators nearly got a fifth starter, but Phaneuf with 614,933 votes edged Ottawa defenseman Sergei Gonchar by 11,305 for the final spot on the blue line.

Thomas, the reigning Vezina Trophy winner from the defending Stanley Cup champions, easily won the goalie race with 626,540

votes — 128,000 more than Toronto’s James Reimer.

Thomas set the NHL record for save percentage last season with a mark of .938, and is having another impressive season for the Bruins, who started Thursday one point behind the Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers. Thomas is 17-6 with a 1.90 goals-against average and a .940 save percentage — even better than his record-setting mark of last season. He is 14-2 in his past 16 decisions.

Michalek, who recently returned following a five-game absence because of a concussion, has scored 19 goals in 35 games. He has already exceeded his total of 18 from last season and is three away from matching his career-best of 22, set in the 2009-10 season.

Alfredsson is third on the Senators’ scoring list with 28 points, two more than Michalek, in his 16th NHL season — all with Ottawa. He led forwards with 897,055 votes, followed by Spezza with 817,483, and Michalek with 743,977.

MIAMI (AP) — Carlos Zambrano will get a much-needed fresh start with the Miami Marlins.

The Chicago Cubs traded their former ace Wednesday for Marlins right-hander Chris Volstad, pending physicals and approval by Major League Baseball, a person familiar with the negotiations said. The person confirmed the deal to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the teams hadn’t announced a deal.

Zambrano wore out his welcome in Chicago because of repeated meltdowns and tantrums. The most recent came when he cleaned out his locker and talked about retiring after giving up five homers and being ejected during a loss to Atlanta on Aug. 12. He was suspended without pay and then it was decided he would sit out the rest of the season.

In Miami he’ll be joining another former Chicagoan, Ozzie Guillen, who expressed interest in acquiring Zambrano when he was hired as the Marlins’ manager in October after stepping down as the White Sox’s skipper. Zambrano joins a franchise on the upswing after a winter spending spree resulted in the signings of All-

Stars Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle and Heath Bell.

Zambrano finished last year 9-7 with a 4.82 ERA. The Cubs expected more when he signed a $91.5 million deal over five seasons through 2012, including a $17,875,000 million salary last season and $18 million in 2012. As part of the trade, they’ll likely pay much of his salary.

Volstad went 5-13 last year with an ERA of 4.89, and his career record is 32-39. He has given up 69 homers over the past three seasons, which could mean trouble for him at Wrigley Field.

Zambrano is 125-81 with a 3.60 ERA after breaking in with the Cubs in 2001, and he threw a no-hitter against

the Astros. But he had difficulty controlling his temper.

In 2007, he got into a fight with teammate Michael Barrett, first in the dugout and then in the locker room. Barrett ended up with a bruise under his eye and a cut lip.

In 2009, he went on tirade against an umpire, throwing a baseball into the outfield, pretending to eject the umpire and slamming his glove against the dugout fence, a tantrum that led to a suspension.

In 2010, Zambrano was placed on the restricted list for six weeks and sent to anger management after a verbal altercation with then-teammate Derrek Lee.

NEW YORK (AP) — Albert Pujols officially joined the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday when Major League Baseball and the players’ association confirmed the terms of the first baseman’s 10-year contract and agreed its guaranteed value is $240 million.

The deal was reached four weeks earlier on the final day of the winter meetings and took nearly a month to complete. There are three separate agreements.

The team and Pujols will enter a 10-year, personal-services agreement following the playing contract’s expiration or Pujols’ retirement, whichever is later, a deal that will pay $1 million annually. But because it is contingent on Pujols actually working for the team, it is not considered guaranteed money for the purposes of baseball’s luxury tax.

High-payroll teams such as the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are likely to examine that structure closely and may emulate it in future agreements.

There also is a marketing agreement that will pay Pujols for milestone accomplishments. The player will receive $3 million for 3,000 hits and $7 million for a record 763rd home run. He currently has 2,073 hits and 763 home runs.

Including all three agreements, Pujols could make up to $265.75 million over 20 years. That includes $875,000 in possible award bonuses each year for accomplishments such as Most Valuable Player, World Series and league championship series MVP, Gold Glove and Silver Slugger, and making the All-Star team.

Like C.J. Wilson’s $77.5 million, five-year contract, which also was

agreed to Dec. 8, Pujols’ deal is heavily backloaded. His 2012 salary will be $12 million, down from the $16 million he made last year in the option year of his contract with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Pujols salary increases to $16 million in 2013 and $23 million in 2014, then rises $1 million annually until he makes $30 million in 2021, when he will be 41.

Pujols deal completed; worth $240M over 10 years

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Defending champion Roger Federer was tested for the first time Thursday at the Qatar Open before defeating Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to reach the semifinals.

The third-ranked Federer set up a rematch of last year’s semifinal against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, after the Frenchman cruised past unseeded Albert Ramos of Spain 6-2, 6-1.

The 30-year-old Federer is aiming for his fourth Doha title.

Federer, who had never dropped a set against Seppi in seven wins, took a 3-0 lead in just six minutes and appeared en route to an easy victory. But he unraveled in the second set, going down 5-1 after a string of unforced errors coupled with improved returns from the 38th-ranked Italian.

Federer came back to tie the set at 5-all but Seppi took the last two games, evening the match when the 16-time Grand Slam champion hit his return long.

Federer recovered in the third, breaking Seppi to go up 2-1. He saved two break points to take control at 5-3 and closed out the match with a blistering forehand winner into the corner which Seppi couldn’t reach.

The sixth-ranked Tsonga struggled to three-set wins in his first two matches.

However, he broke Ramos in the first game and was never seriously challenged. He broke again to go up

5-2, and took a 4-1 lead in the second set, repeatedly pumping his fists when he hit winners and dancing as he closed out the match in just over an hour.

“I was very aggressive at the very beginning with my play, so I did well today,” said Tsonga, who joked this week that he was normally a “diesel engine” who starts slowly.

Tsonga said he was pleased with his serving, winning 83 percent of the first-serve points.

“It was good, because I had a good percentage. With the wind, I think it’s a good weapon,” he said. “When the wind is across the court, you know, I can slice the ball.

“This is my best serve. When I play a lefty guy, it’s easier for me to put him out of the court. Then the court is open for me and it’s easy.”

In other quarterfinals, Rafael Nadal plays Mikhail Youzhny, while Gael Monfils meets Viktor Troicki of Serbia.

Ivory Coast coach Francois Zahoui has rejected Manchester City’s request to play Yaya and Kolo Toure in Sunday’s Manchester derby in the FA Cup.

“Clubs know the rules,” Zahoui told BBC Africa. “I’m expecting them [the Toures] for the Fifa deadline.”

Under Fifa rules, players can be called up two weeks before the start of the Africa Cup of Nations on 21 January.

City had hoped the Toure brothers would be able to play against United before joining the Ivory Coast training camp.

But Zahoui insists they report for a meeting in Paris on Saturday before flying out with the rest of the squad to Abu Dhabi for a two-week training camp.

“The national team in Ivory Coast is led by people who are well educated and I was surprised that people in England think that we don’t know the Fifa rules about dates,” Zahoui added.

“Here, when we call up the players, they are obliged to turn up at the date indicated by Fifa. So when we call them up we know that the clubs need to let them go.”

Zahoui said he had travelled

to England to discuss the matter with Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who will lose Gervinho to the Ivory Coast.

Gervinho has made 24 appearances for the Gunners this season since signing for £10.5m from Lille.

Zahoui warned managers not to turn the situation into a “stand-off” between club and country.

He added: “I said to the managers, ‘Be careful because there’s a great expectation here and we need our cohesion. We have our 10 days together and we need a team spirit at our training camp’.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insists his side will not panic after a 3-0 defeat at Newcastle.

The loss was United’s second in five days, coming after their shock 3-2 home defeat against Blackburn.

“We have the experience to cope, we need to get the show on the road,” said Ferguson, whose side are three points behind leaders Manchester City.

“It’s not a time for panic. Losing a game at this time of the year can sometimes happen.”

The Scot conceded that City were now in the driving seat at the top of the Premier League. Roberto Mancini’s side moved to 48 points after their 3-0 win over Liverpool on Tuesday.

“Advantage to them, of course,” admitted 70-year-old Ferguson.

The Old Trafford side will also be wary of third-placed Tottenham, who closed the gap to three points after their 1-0 victory over West Brom.

The London side will draw level on points with United if they win their game in hand against Everton next week.

The Magpies took the lead at the Sports Direct Arena through striker Demba Ba, before Yohan Cabaye added a magnificent second from a free-kick after the break.

Phil Jones’ own goal late in the match sealed a memorable win for Alan Pardew’s men.

“We started reasonably well,” added Ferguson, whose side face local rivals City in the FA Cup on Sunday.

“But they scored a fantastic goal and it really picked everyone up in the

stadium. The second was a killer for us.“The story of the game was they had

two fantastic strikes which put them in the driving seat.”

Pardew, meanwhile, believes the scoreline was a fair reflection of his side’s dominance.

“We won because we controlled the game in terms of what we wanted to do, we wouldn’t let them play,” said the Magpies boss, after the club recorded their first win over United since 2001.

“Physically and aerially we had an advantage. It was a great victory for us - we beat the champions 3-0 and we probably deserved that scoreline.

“You’ve got to have brave players who are going to push on - we had some outstanding performances individually.” Leading scorer Ba scored his 15th goal of the campaign to set the Magpies on their way, but will now head off to the Africa Cup of Nations to play for Senegal.

However, Pardew believes his side will cope with the loss.

“You see the guys who came off the bench contributed,” he added.

“Leon Best in particular stepped up to the plate when we lost Andy Carroll [to Liverpool in January 2011].

“We knew it was going to happen and we accept that.”
