KRISTEN MULLEN / THE CITIZENS VOICE

Wendy Cadwalader, left, of Beaumont, and her sister Micayla Grey, of Idetown, tend to the grave ofCadwaladers daughter Carrie Martin who was murdered six years ago to the day Friday. A motor-cycle run is scheduled for Sunday in her honor.

Bike event keeps slain womans memory aliveBy Patrick SweetStaff Writer

WILKES-BARRE Fridaymarked six years since Car-rie Martin, 20 years old andthereigning Luzerne CountyFair Queen, was stabbed todeath in her Larksvillehome.

For her mother, WendyCadwalader, Martin still liveson, memorialized by a nearlylifelike tattoo on herback.

Cadwalader had a pictureof Martin, with angel wings

added, tattooed on her leftshoulder blade not long afterher daughters death.

Shes been on my backmy whole life, Cadwaladersaid. I want to keep herthere.

The tattoo symbolizes Cad-waladers commitment topreserving her daughtersmemory, a mission Cad-waladertakes seriously.

    On Sunday, Cadwalader is

hosting the fifth annualCar-ing for Carrie MotorcycleRun and Benefit, a 60-milemotorcycle ride that beginsat the Luzerne County FairGrounds in Dallas and endsat Konefals Grove in Shaver-town. Money raised by theevent will go to the CarrieMartin We Can Make theWorld a Better Place Schol-arshipFund.

    Cadwalader doesnt want

    tolet Martin go, and inmany

w a ys Ma rti n s ti ll li ve sthroughher mothers efforts.

When Cadwalader satdown last December at the

Dallas Correctional Facility, face to face with JosephGacha, theman convicted ofkilling her daughter andserving lifeplus 20to 40yearsin prison, Martin was thereto support her, Cadwaladersaid.

SheaskedGacha about themurderand prison life. Shak-ing, as shesaidshe often doeswhen she is nervous, Cad-walader asked him if hed

    admit to killing her daugh-ter.

It helped me a lot to be

able to say things, Cad-walader said. I know Carriecame down to be there withme andbrought Godwith herbecause I neededall thehelpI couldget.

Gachas answers werevague, she said, and he main-tained his innocence. Cad-walader, though, wasntlook-ingfor closure.

I knew I wasnt going toget the answers I wanted,

Cadwalader said. Closurewould be (Martin) walkingback through my door andgiving me a hug and tellingme shelovesme.

The motorcycle run is animportant wayfor Cadwalad-er to remember her daugh-ter.

(The event is)what keepsme going, Cadwalader said.Idont want her to beforgot-ten.

The ride has drawn 170 to190 motorcyclesin pastyears, shesaid.

Artand Kerri Pimm, long-time friendsof Cadwaladers, came up with theideafor theevent in 2005.Art Pimm saidhe noticed that a lot of theirfriends rodemotorcycles andfigured it would be a goodway to benefit the scholar-ship fund and memorializeMartin.

Its a moving day for manypeople, Pimm said, especiallyCadwalader.

    (Cadwalader) gets a littleemotional when she sees allthe bikes line up, Pimmsaid.The first yearwe didit,she made me do the inter-vi e w , a n d I e ve n bro k edown.

They begin planning forthe run at the beginning ofthe year, booking the fairgrounds and figuring outdetails. This year, Cadwalad-ers 9-year-old daughter,

Katie-Jo, will have her ownbooth at Konefals, paintingfaces and making beaded

    jewelry.Katie-Jo, who was 3 years

oldwhen her sister was mur-dered, didnt always under-stand what happened, Cad-walader said. When she wasyounger, Cadwalader and herhusbandChris wouldanswertheir daughters questionsbut didnt go out of their way

to talk about it with her.Katie-Jo now understandswhat happened to her sisterand wants to help preservehersisters memory withhermother.

She said, Mom, listen. Iwant to help sissys scholar-ship too I want to do myown thing, Cadwaladersaid. Shes proud of herself, that shes a part of it.
