1 MESSAGE FROM THE ACTING HEAD The Head of School, John Foster, is currently Acting Dean of the BEL Faculty for three months, and as a result Tim Coelli is Acting Head in his place. 2004 has been a very busy year for the School of Economics. Enrolments continue to be strong in all undergraduate and graduate programs. In particular, the Honours program has over 20 students enrolled this year, which is always a good indicator of a healthy teaching program. Research activity in the School has also been quite significant, as evidenced by the large number of excellent conference presentations and publications listed within this Bulletin. The School has also continued to foster strong linkages with other academic organisations and the wider community. We have hosted visitors from a range of countries, including Greece, Japan, UK, Germany, China and Thailand, plus we have also received a number of excellent seminar speakers from around Australia and overseas. In addition, the School has hosted two conferences this year: the Asia Pacific Productivity Conference and the Chinese Economic Studies Conference, plus two workshops on Remittances, Microfinance and Technology and the French-Australian Workshop of the Research Groups in Economic and Management Sciences. So congratulations are due to all general and academic staff for their excellent contributions this year. The final exams are almost upon us, so we are clearly in the home straight for 2004. I wish you all the best for the remainder of the semester and the summer vacation. Tim Coelli, Acting Head GREETINGS Hi.
