Holy Week We are here! We’ve come through our Lenten journey and have reached the Passiontide. This is a very sacred liturgy and week – HOLY WEEK, filled with many graces and this Palm Sunday marks the beginning of it. For Christians, this is the holiest week of the liturgical year because the events associated with the final week of Jesus’ earthly life form the basis of our Christian identity and faith. In the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ, we find the mys-tery of our salvation made manifest to the world. Let us participate faithfully in those grand liturgies. Palm Sunday/Notes on the Scripture Today, as we proclaim the great story of Jesus’ suffering and death, we can-not help but feel stunned and maybe even overwhelmed when we under-stand that he underwent these torments for you and for me. Jesus was not just a victim of circumstances. He was not in the wrong place at the wrong time. Rather he accepted the torturous death on the cross out of love for us, to take on himself the punishment we all deserved for our sins. Like any great story, the story of Jesus’ suffering and death is filled with char-acters with whom we can both sympathize and identify. The Gospels leave us wondering what happened to the characters we have read about. Did his encounter with Jesus change Simon of Cyrene? Did he eventually become a follower of Jesus and the apostles? How about Veronica? Did she walk through Jerusalem showing everyone the veil with the image of Jesus’ face on it? Did others come to believe because of her compassionate act? We can never know the answer. However, we can and should ask ourselves the same questions. What are we doing with the freedom we have through Jesus’ death? Are we making use of the power unleashed by his passion to stop sinning? Are we imitating Christ’s love for us by loving our neighbor as well? Has our encounter with Jesus through this proclamation of his passion and death changed us? These are questions to reflect upon as we join the story of our lives to the Greatest Story Ever Told. These are the questions to ask ourselves as we enter into this Holy Week. Reconciliation Traditionally, one of those liturgies of Holy Week is our Reconciliation Ser-vice. I invite you this Monday, April 10th at 7:30pm to join us to celebrate God’s love and forgiveness. This is a great way to enter into this Holy Week.

The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

As I write these reflec-tions, I realize how apt the title is. Last week, I expressed gratitude for being able to remember the past, while hoping my present day memory stays operative, Such worries come to the fore when you are “around of awhile”. Another area of life which is part of the landscape of aging is the speed of life. While I have slowed down in terms of min-isterial responsibilities and physical move-ment, the days and weeks seem to pass so quickly. I take pills in the morning and evening. Weekly, I fill the pill box and find myself thinking, “Where has the week gone?” I retired in July 2013, four years ago. Again my surprise at the speed of time. But I am only commenting, not complaining, be-cause I am happy that

clear understating of the values of St. Francis Parish in the design and construc-tion process. It pro-vided the committee a benchmark of agreed upon values as deci-sions had to be made. During this long build-ing process, about two years, there were disagreements. This document proved val-uable because, in the face of differing opin-ions, we were able to ask ourselves, “does this decision reflect our agreed upon prin-ciples”. And last week when I found these principles in an unopened box, I was excited! thought the hard copy had been lost and my memory had to be the source. It was excit-ing to read what was proposed 25 years ago: not just old words but now a liv-ing space. Let me

I am able to enjoy these days and years. When I moved from the rectory to my town house, I had to empty and move two offices, the rectory as well as parish. I attempted to discard outdated files, pass on relevant ma-terial for Fr. Artur, and keep what I thought pertinent. I shredded a lot. But as the time of the move drew closer, I simply put unsorted items in boxes and said to self, “I’ll get to it”. I have begun the task of plowing through the boxes that have been sitting unopened in my garage for four years. A few weeks ago, I wrote that our Building Committee developed a series of design principles to guide us through the building of our church. This document was given to the architects so they would have a

you open the gospels, you will see different aspects of Jesus, dif-ferent incidents in his life and sometimes differences in the same stories. The or-der of events can also be different. The gospels are based first on the life and teaching of Je-sus. The apostles ini-tially passed this infor-mation down orally. The first gospel to be written was probably Mark around 70 A.D. The gospel writers selected those stories and elements which were handed down orally in view of the situation of their audi-ence but always in a way that told the truth about Jesus. CCC126 The gospel of Mark was written for Gentile Christians and focus-es on Jesus’ healing

This year I am read-ing the New Testa-ment. How is it that there are a lot of dif-ferences in the Gos-pels? As an artist, I have been to life drawing classes. We have one model but each of the twelve artists in that room will produce a different portrait. We all have a different point of view and want to portray cer-tain aspects of the model. This is true of the evangelists who wrote the gospels. Having all four gos-pels gives us a more complete portrait of Jesus than if we just had one of them. The Holy Spirit is the author of the gospels but He used the tal-ents and situations of the human authors to convey truth. When

ministry and sacrificial death. Matthew was written to Jewish Christians and em-phasizes Jesus’ teaching. Luke in-cludes prayer and Je-sus’ compassion to the outcasts and sin-ners. John shows us Jesus’ divinity. It is helpful to read the preface to the Gos-pels in your bible to understand the con-text. To really know Jesus read all four of the Gospels. That will give you the complete and beautiful portrait of our Lord. Want more? CCC 124-127 Questions? [email protected]

USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, 2015–16 Respect Life Program

“RE-HUMANIZING OUR PERSECUTED BRETHERN” ON APRIL 20

Knowledge and Prayer Program at Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Church.

The Multi Parish Respect Life Ministries is pleased to announce our April Knowledge and Prayer Program “Re-Humanizing our Persecuted Brethren.” Jeff Gardner, renowned humanitarian photographer, au-thor and producer, from The Picture Christian Project, will present on Thursday, April 20th, 7 PM, at Annunci-ation Byzantine Catholic Church, 14610 Will-Cook Rd. in Homer Glen. Christians today are the most persecuted group in the world. Despite this fact, media coverage about who Christians are and what they need is sparse. By not showing them the media “disappears” Christians on a global scale. The Picture Christians Project was be-gun in 2013 to change this. To get at the problem of Christian persecution and media manipulation, The Picture Christians Project educates the public about Christians worldwide and how images are used to shape and push public opin-ion. Through the use of photography, their blog, and multi-media appearances their goal is to engage and better inform you about Christians and the world we live in. Through the use of powerful images and words their second goal is to re-humanize our brothers and sis-ters in Christ. People are not just statistics or objects of a news story. Through photography and telling per-sonal stories they help to transform the persecuted from “something” back into a ”someone.” Jeff Gardner is an award winning producer, published author, journalist and humanitarian photographer. He has worked in media for over a decade writing for a number of national publications, producing a number of syndicated national radio programs and appeared on a number of national Catholic radio networks. Please join us for the very dramatic and moving presentation.

As warmer weather ap-proaches, a caregiver may begin to feel “trapped” as everyone else seems to be getting out and on the move. When that feeling begins to overcome a caregiver, it is important to take a little time for oneself -- a time to renew, relax, and get in touch with one’s

own soul. We will spend some time trying to re-duce stress and focus on YOUR needs. Re-member that when your needs are taken care of, the person you care for will benefit too. THE STORY OF MARY, MOTHER OF

JESUS THURSDAY,

APRIL 27, 2017 6:30-9:00PM.

McDonough Chapel of the Mother Mercy on the campus of Saint Xavier University Don’t miss these special screening opportunities of the Gabriel Award winning film, Full of Grace, produced by Outside da Box! Ten years after Christ’s res-urrection, Full of Grace sheds light on a critical moment in the history of Christianity. Fraught with heresies and conflict, the early followers of Christ seek to live in a way that re-spects Jewish law, but with the boldness they experienced when they met Jesus of Nazareth. Mary, the mother of Je-sus, quietly awaits the return of Peter, the “rock” whom Jesus asked to lead the Chris-tian people. Arriving at Mary’s home after years of traveling, preaching and narrowly escaping death, Peter expresses the overwhelming re-sponsibility of the task set before him and his own helplessness. As Mary recalls the incredi-ble mystery of her life with Christ, Peter re-discovers the truth: He is not leading. HE IS FOLLOWING.

May your lives always be blessed with God’s love!

With joy, we announce the marriage of...

We start today looking through the portals of Jerusalem, seeing crowds of people, cheering and waving palm branches in the air. The whole atmosphere is one of joy, triumph, and celebration. We can get distracted or enthralled by the scene, and not see clearly the features of Jesus as he enters. But our readings from Isaiah and Paul's letter to the Philippians clarify his features for us. He is the Suffering Servant, meek and mute before his captors and per-secutors; he is the very image of the

unseen God, yet will not clutch at equality with God before he endures his final confrontation in humility. Isaiah and Paul help us "behold the Lamb of God" before we hear the sto-ry of his final and greatest confronta-tion. It is important that we see Christ clearly before we hear the account of his passion, for we--his Body through baptism, the church--now bear his face. We must, with him, enter into this time of trial so we can, also with him, enter into his final triumph.
