    Hello everyone,I am pleased to announce

    that the Phase-I proposal for theIEEE Power Electronics Magazine with a targeted start date oJanuary 2014 was unanimouslyapproved by the IEEE Publica

    tion committee. There is stilquite a bit of work left to obtainthe final approval of the phase-II proposal but weare up to a great start. I like to extend my thanks toDr. Tan, Dr. Chang, Dr. Enjeti, Dr. Boroyevich andMs. Donna Florek in particular for their support inthis process and the entire PELS community for theioverwhelming support through the recent survey focreation of this new magazine.

    In this issue we introduce the new PELS PresidentDr. Dong Tan, succeeding outgoing PresidenDr. Dushan Boroyevich, who writes his first presidents message in this issue.

    In this issue we also list the 2012 recipients of theIEEE Newell Award, the PELS Distinguished Service

    Award, the PELS R. David Middlebrook technicaachievement award and the PELS Bass OutstandingYoung Power Electronics Engineer Award. Finallywe note the Argentina Chapter is the recipient of thBest Chapter Award.

    The fast approaching 2013 Applied Power Electronics Conference and Expo APEC 2013 is featuredon the cover and is the first of the series of PELSrelated conferences in 2013 covering every aspect opower electronics.

    As we are celebrating the New Year, PELS wel-comes a new team of leadership. For the nexttwo years. I will have the privilege to serve asthe PELS president, together with a highly

    qualified team of volunteers: Alan Mantooth asVP for Operations, Braham Ferreira as VP forMeetings, and Prasad Enjeti as VP for Products.Each one of them brings to the job many yearsof experiences and dedicated services to IEEE

    in general and PELS in particular.Equally exciting, we welcome the class of 2013 IEEE fellows eval-

    uated by PELS and approved by the IEEE Board of directors: AliEmadi, Cian OMathuna, Dehong Xu, David Perreault, Yan-Fei Liu,Donald Holmes and Leon Tolbert.

    Id like to express my personal gratitude to Dushan Borojevich,PELS President from 2011 to 2012. Under Dushans leadership,PELS continued its remarkable growth in its technical activities cov-ering all aspects of power electronics applications and systems, sig-nificant outreach to international communities with unprecedentedportfolio of diverse conferences, symposiums and workshops, and

    ever increasing presence in print, on the web and digital mediawith many new product offerings for our members and the societyat large.

    As we move forward to the New Year, we will continue the

    growth of PELS in all areas by focusing on the following: 1) Con-tinue to promote power electronics and the community it serves tothe society at large; 2) Grow and solidify our technical activities bybringing more young people, more resources and structural support3) Strive to improve services and values to PELS members, particu-larly to industry practitioners and our international colleagues; and4) Collaborate more effectively with our sister societies.

    With sustainability, our community is gaining wider recognitionas a top-tier technology discriminator. A prominent example is lasyears recognition of one of the Newell awardees with the NationaMedal of Technology and Innovation. This is a golden era for PELS togrow. I am looking forward to your support and to working togetheto achieve the objectives essential for PELS future success.

    In my next message, I will update you with our celebration planfor PELS 25th anniversary and more details on our action plan fothe next two years.

    IEEE William E. Newell

    Power Electronics Award Recipient

    Leo Lorenz

    Leo Lorenz developed some of the most impor-tant innovations in power electronics, spear-

    heading the movement from conventional powerconversion technology to high-frequency andhigh-power methods. Working with SiemensSemiconductor in Munich, Dr. Lorenz developed

    the first ultrafast switching multi-die direct copper bonded-basedpower metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET)module in 1986, which serves as the foundation of todays powermodule technology. He pioneered the product definition and con-cept engineering of the first ultrathin wafer non-punch-through(NPT) insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) in 1987 and developedthe sandwich technology (the basis for controlled integrated powersystems) for advanced integrated power modules, which is an impor-tant component in home appliances and automotive applications. AnIEEE Fellow, Dr. Lorenz is currently a professor at TU-Ilmenau andpresident of the European Center for Power Electronics.

    Distinguished Service Award Recipient

    Thomas Habetler

    Thomas G. Habetler received the B.S.E.E. degreein 1981 and the M.S. degree in 1984, both in elec-trical engineering, from Marquette University,Milwaukee, WI, and the Ph.D. degree from theUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison, in 1989. From

    19831985 he was employed by the Electro-Motive Division of GeneralMotors as a Project Engineer. Since 1989, he has been employed by theGeorgia Institute of technology, Atlanta, USA, where he is currently aProfessor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research interestsare in electric machine protection and condition monitoring, switchingconverter technology, and drives. He has published over 300 technicalpapers in the field. He is a regular consultant to industry in the field ofcondition-based diagnostics for electrical systems. Dr. Habetler was theinaugural recipient of the IEEE-PELS Diagnostics Achievement Award,and a recipient of the EPEPEMC Outstanding Achievement Award. Hehas also received one Transactions and four conference prize paperawards from the Industry Applications Society. He has served on theIEEE Board of Directors as the Division II Director, on the TechnicalActivities Board, the Member and Geographic Activities Board, and is apast president of the Power Electronics Society. In addition, Dr. Habetlerhas served in numerous chair and committee positions at the corporate

    level of the IEEE. He has also served as an Associate Editor for the IEEETransactions on Power Electronics. Dr. Habetler is a Fellow of the IEEE,with the citation, for contributions to electric motor control and condi-tion monitoring.

    Richard M. Bass Outstanding Young Power

    Electronics Engineer Award Recipient

    Samir Kouro

    Samir Kouro was born in Valdivia, Chile, in1978. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degreesin electronics engineering from the UniversidadTcnica Federico Santa Mara (UTFSM),Valparaso, Chile, in 2004 and 2008, respec-

    tively. In 2004, he joined the Department of Electronic EngineeringUTFSM, as a Research Assistant, and became an AssociatedResearcher in 2008 and Research Academic in 2011. From 2009 to2011 he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Electricaand Computer Engineering, Ryerson University, Toronto, CanadaHis research interests include power converters, variable-speed

    drives, and renewable energy power conversion systems (bothwind and photovoltaic). Dr. Kouro has directed 4 Fondecyt projectsand is an associated researcher of the Basal project CCTVal; he hascoauthored one book, two book chapters and over 50 refereedjournal and conference papers; he has served as Co-chair for 7special sessions in conferences and as Guest Editor for a speciasection in the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics. Dr. Kourowas recipient of the 2008 best paper award of the IEEE IndustriaElectronics Magazine, the 2011 best paper award of the IEEETransaction on Industrial Electronics, the Ismael Valdes awardfrom the Institute of Engineers of Chile in 2005, and was recognizedby the President of the Republic as the youngest researcher oFondecyt in 2004. Dr. Kouro is member of the IEEE PELS, IES andIAS societies.

    IEEE PELS R. David Middlebrook

    Technical Achievement Award Recipient

    Prasad Enjeti

    Prasad Enjeti received his B.E degree in 1980from Osmania University, Hyderabad, India, MTech degree in 1982 from IIT Kanpur, India andPh.D. degree in 1987 from Concordia UniversityMontreal, Canada, all in electrical engineeringSince 1988 he has been at Texas A&M University

    USA, where he is currently a professor of Electrical and ComputerEngineering. His research focus is on advancing power electronicconverters for utility interface of solar-photovoltaic/wind/fuel-cell/battery energy storage power systems. He has published over 300technical papers in the field. He is the lead developer of the PoweElectronics/Power Quality & Fuel Cell Power ConditioningLaboratories at Texas A&M University.

    He is a regular consultant to industry in the field of conditionbased diagnostics for electrical systems. Dr. Enjeti holds four USpatents and has licensed two new technologies to the industry sofar. He was the recipient of several IEEE prize paper awards. Hecurrently serves as digital media editor in chief for IEEE PoweElectronics Society. In year 2000, he was elected to Fellow gradeby the IEEE Fellow Committee for Contributions to solutions outility interface problems in power electronic systems and harmonic mitigation.

    2012 PELS Best Chapter AwardThe Power Electronics Society Best Chapter Award was establishedin 2001 to recognize excellent service by a PELS Chapter to its members and to the power electronics community. The award consists oa certificate that includes the names of the Chapter chair, secretaryand treasurer, and a monetary award of $1,500. The Chapter mayuse the monetary award to support its activities, including expensesfor a Chapter representative to attend the Awards Ceremony. In 2012the best chapter award goes to:

    GRAPES: Bringing Power Electronics to theElectric Power GridAlan Mantooth & Roger DougalGRAPES Center Directors

    About the CenterGRAPES, the NSF Center for GRid-connected

    Advanced Power Electronic Systems, wasfounded in 2009 as an NSF Industry/UniversityCooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) withsites at the University of Arkansas and theUniversity of South Carolina. The mission ofthe GRAPES Center is to accelerate the adop-tion and insertion of power electronics into theelectric grid to enable smart power flow andsubsequently improve system stability, flexibility,robustness, and economy. This mission is accom-plished by focusing on the following main objectives: Developing new technologies for advanced power elec-

    tronic systems in the areas supporting grid-connected distributedenergy resources, power conditioning and routing devices, andintelligent load-side devices,

    Developing the software and tools for controlling embedded-and grid-connected power electronics to benefit the grid as wellas controlled loads,

    Educating engineers who understand the power electronic tech-nologies important to the member companies and industry ingeneral.Nine professors are involved in the centers research, supported

    by two full-time and two part-time operations staff. More than fifty

    graduate and undergraduate students are associatedwith GRAPES projects. In the first three years o

    the center, GRAPES has graduated over a dozenstudents at all levels, many of whom have goneon to work at member companies immediatelyafter graduating.GRAPES follows the traditional I/UCRC mod

    el in which companies membership funds arepooled to support the research that is conductedby university researchers. Representatives of each

    member company constitute the Industrial AdvisoryBoard (IAB) and this board meets face-to-face twice

    a year, and via teleconference numerous other times todiscuss project ideas, strategic goals for the center, learn

    about ongoing work and decide which future research should bepursued. Currently, GRAPES nineteen industrial members are funding 14 projects.

    About the ResearchOne of the strengths of GRAPES research program is the breadthof expertise available from its researchers, which covers the vasarray of issues that need to be addressed in order to create successful power electronics.     controls, all the way to power system analysis and integration andtesting. This vertically integrated approach improves the quality ofthe research and expands the scope of successful projects. It allowsstudents to experience the system-level context of their researcheven if they are working at the device level. For example, packag-ing students working with circuit design students creates a situationwhere real-world constraints such as thermal management, noiseimmunity, and parasitic analysis are all properly considered. Thisapproach ensures that research outputs consider the issues thatmust be addressed in order to create viable products for the mem-ber companies.

    GRAPES researchers have accomplished great things in the lastthree years. Some of the completed projects include:

    Developed packaging structures, materials and characteristics fopower modules carrying devices rated up to 10 kV. This improvesthe voltage and current handling capability of the power modulesused in power electronic systems.

    Built a 2 kW prototype of a smart green power node, a universal power router and energy management device for residential applications, including writing predictive algorithmfor system control.

    Developed a software tool for layout synthesis of power modulethat allows tradeoffs of temperature vs. electrical parasitics for amore optimal layout.

    Completed work to integrate energy storage into a distributionsystem with high PV penetration, including analysis of variou

    battery chemistries for cost, lifetime, and maintenance of neces-sary voltage limits.

    Developed tools and methods utilizing synchrophasor data toassess voltage stability in the presence of high penetrations ofgrid-connected power electronic devices. Included in this work,

    researchers developed an improved algorithm for frequencymeasurement.

    Developed a flexible and reconfigurable platform for development of controls for grid-connected converters. This controplatform provides fast prototyping and development capability

    for power electronics control to R&D groups at universities, inresearch labs and in industry settings. This platform has alreadybeen used in several projects, including the 2 kW smart greenpower node.

    Directions of Power Electronics

    The past decade has seen some significant advances in widebandgap semiconductor devices, including commercialization ofSiC and GaN. Further material advances have aided in the devel-opment of the power electronic packaging to achieve levels of

    power density at the module level that have not been previouslyattained. This becomes still more impressive with the advances insingle chip gate drivers and power supplies on a chip. The intel-ligentor smart integrated power electronic module is a reality inthe laboratory and should become a commercial reality in thenear term. The significance of this integration is that costs willcome down and reliability will increase in much the same way asoccurred in integrated circuits in the 1980s and 1990s. Continuing

    advances will be required in all of these areas, but the researchcommunities in both industry and academia are engaged to makethis happen.

    New advances are expected in SiC and GaN devices includinghigher blocking voltages, higher current ratings, and higher yields amaterial quality is improved. New advances in power electronicmodule packaging are also right around the corner including newpassivation materials, thermal management techniques, and wirebondless interconnect methods. The realization of wide bandgapIC design will enable still tighter module-level integration of driversprotection circuitry, command and control circuitry within the mod

    ules in those applications where desirable.All of these advances at the technology level will most certainlybe followed by advances in system level controls that will take ad-vantage of new capabilities. The growing concentration of poweelectronics in the electric power grid will require ever more careful coordination of power electronic-based assets, while also offering opportunities for higher penetration of storage, renewables, andmicrogrid concepts.

    Following on the successes of the three international symposia devoted to the technological advances in

    power electronics and distributed generation, the 4 th International Symposium on Power Electronics for

    Distributed Generation Systems (PEDG2013) will be held from July 8th to July 11th in Rogers,

    Arkansas, USA. The venue is easily accessed through direct flights from a number of large airports in

    the USA. This international symposium sponsored by the IEEE Power Electronics Society will provide

    a venue for experts to present the state-of-the-art in power electronics and distributed generation (DG)

    systems. The symposium, whose working language is English, will feature keynote speeches and

    regular technical sessions on theory, analysis, design, test and deployment related to power electronics

    for distributed generation and renewable energy systems.

    Submission of Papers: Prospective participants are invited to submit electronically an extended

    abstract of their work. The document should be in English, and should be a single column and not

    exceed 1500 words. The abstracts will be subject to a peer review process. The submission instructions

    and symposium information are posted on the symposium website (www.pedg2013.org). Technical

    Joint IEEE IAS/PELS/IES GermanChapter Meeting at Universityof Paderborn and dSPACETraditionally in the week before the SPS/IPC/Drives trade fair inNuremeberg, Germany the German Joint Chapter has its third chap-

    ter meeting of the year.This time the Chapter had been invited by Prof. Joachim Bcker,Head of the Chair of Electrical Drives at the Paderborn Universtiy(LEA) and by Dr. Herbert Hanselmann, founder and CEO of dSPACE.

    The meeting started on Thursday with a visit at the Heinz NixdorfForum, the world biggest computern museum. The museum, giv-ing an overview over the development of information technoligiesstarting from the Babylonians to future trends, itself is a worth a trip(if you plan to visit: please calculate two to three hours of denseinformation).

    Thereafter the official part of the meeting startet at the dSPACEheadquarters in Paderborn. Dr. Herbert Hanselmann and Prof. AxelMertens, Chair of the Chapter welcomed the participants.

    Dr. Hanselmann gave an overview of the history and activities ofthe company. dSPACE is a company driven by engineers and tech-

    nologies. Starting with DSP based rapid control prototyping (RCP)systems as a tool for control engineers they adopted and enhancedthe Matlab toolchain in the early 90ies setting standards in controlengineering. One of the biggest sectors meanwhile is the HIL testsystems for mainly automotive electronic control units. Developmenttools for electric drives however, have been in focusfrom the begin-ning. After a short tour around the newly buildt headquarter we gotan overview over current trends in development tools for (automo-tive) E-drives such as RCP systems such as the ones widley referedin the articles in the transactions of our societies as well as in HILsimulators for motors and batteries.

    The first day ended with a reception at the dSPACE facilities, achance to talk with the hosts and refreshen some of the contacts,especially between our regular particitpants.

    The second day was located at the facilities of the University ofPaderborn. Prof. Joachim Bcker again welcomed the audience andgave an overview over the activies of the Electrical Drives Department(LEA). Research topics beeing modelling and control of electrical drives,power electronic systems focusing on high efficiency, automotive drives

    (control of the IPMSM in a disc configuration) and self organizing sys-tems focusing on the energy management of hybrid vehicles.

    As usual within a meeting of the Joint German Chapter thisoverview was followed by a session of technicalpresentations, forming a seminar within the meet-ing. Wilhelm Peters (LEA) talked about controlstrategies for automotive e-drives. Challenges bee-ing the ratio of 16 kHz switching to 1 kHz funda-mental frequency of the currents. Depending onthe speed and torque the approach is either basedon maximum effiency or on a maximum torqueper flux stratey.

    Michael Leuer and Klaus Peter (both LEA)presented a scaleable simulation toolset for thedesign of e-drive components in a simulatedsystem environment. Modeling depth can beselcected for every component. As an example,Mr Leuer compared the results of a mean val-ue model of the electrical drive compared to aswithing modell considering the discrete effectof the power electronic.

    Frank Mertens (dSPACE) gave an overview overstate of the art of the available development toolsfor e-drive based automotive drive trains, includinghigh voltage batteries, electric motors within thetraction system and energy mangement systems.

    Matthias Deter (dSPACE) closed this sessionwith an insight into FPGA based simulations toolsfor e-drives. One of the challenges here for anOEM beeing the collection of the electrical dataof the motors, as these are in the responsibility of

    their suppliers. One approach here is to importthe data directly out of the FEM models of themachines, enabling a dq model as well as angulareffects such as cogging.

    After two years of service, the chapter boardhad to be re-elected within the IEEE business partthe meeting. Prof. Mertens (chairman) and Dr. Kiel(vice chair) resigned from their active positions ofseveral years.

    Everywhere in the world, where engineers are developing solu-tions for automotive, avioninc or industrial embedded and controlsystems, dSPACE systems are used to speed up the development.

    Applications are around the development V, starting from con-trol systems development even without real hardware involved.dSPACE is a synonym for RCP sytems as well as for HIL testingof ECUs.

    Founded in 1989 by 4 people in Paderborn out of the Univer-

    sity, it is now present all around the world mainly close to thecentres of automotive deveolpment. The headcount is meanwhile1000 persons 800 of them in Paderborn and still hiring.

    Power electronics has matured as a discriminating technology for a wide variety of applications from industrial totransportation to commercial to appliances to energy efficiency and to handheld devices. The technology hasevolved tremendously to approach a wide range of applications and implementations that push limits in dynamicsand energy conversion performance. Consequently, the amount of research work in emerging and selected topicsand the need for close collaborations among industry, research, and academia are growing in an unprecedentedspeed. The challenge in the coming years lies in developing new techniques at the lowest possible cost, size and

    weight for emerging applications. To address this technology trend and to serve our members better, the IEEEPower Electronics Society and the IEEE Industry Applications Society are jointly launching a new journal: IEEE

    Distinguished Lecturer (DL) Program20142015

    The IEEE Distinguished Lecturers Program is one of the most exciting offerings available to the

    IEEE Society Chapters. Each year, the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) selects a few

    distinguished members of our profession as Distinguished Lecturers, not only to celebrate and honor

    their high achievements in the field but also to support PELS chapter activities by providing high profile

    speakers for local chapter/section events. The appointed DLs will serve a two year term and fulfill the

    commitment of delivering at least two lectures during the period.

    If you are or know someone who is an expert on certain topics of power electronics and a good

    public speaker, please email a brief nomination package to John Shen, PELS DL Committee Chair at

    [email protected] by June 1, 2013 which should include the following:

    x Nominators contact information and a short bio (not needed for self-nomination)

    x Nominees contact information and full resume

    x 13 proposed lectures each with a title and short abstract (less than 100 words for each title)

    x Nominees past records in giving public lectures, seminars, or tutorials

    x List of respective PELS Technical Committee(s) which may potentially endorse the

    nomination (for a complete TC list please checkwww.ieee-pels.org)

    The candidates will be evaluated by the DL committee in consultation with respective technical

    committees of PELS, based on high distinction earned from their professional work and public speech

    experience, and officially approved by the President of PELS with the consent of PELS AdCom no later

    than October 1, 2013.

    The DLs will be acknowledged in PELS publicity materials and honored at selected PELS awardceremonies. PELS will support DLs volunteer service by covering transportation expense while the

    local PELS chapter will be responsible for local expense (hotel stays and foods etc.).
