In the First Division, goals from Lewis Coleman, Malick Jammeh and Charlie Babb fired Welton Rovers to a 3-0 win over Almondsbury, while there was a rare goalless draw between Chippenham Park and Devizes Town at Hardenhuish Park. The following evening, Radstock Town made it two wins from two with a thumping 4-0 win away at Bishops Lydeard thanks to goals from Josh Howe, Tom Stocks, Josh Witcombe and Matt Minnis. There was also an away win for Wincanton Town over Chard Town, with Marcus Cook banging in a hat-trick during their 3-1 win. Another man to score a treble on Wednesday evening was Oli Trevarthen, during Odland Abbotonians 7-0 drubbing of Corsham Town. Trevarthen scored twice in the first half, and once after the break, with Josh Williams as well as substitutes Matt Ellery (x2) and Joe Walters also getting on the scoresheet during the one-sided encounter. In the fixture at Meadow Lane, Westbury United were two goals ahead thanks to goals from Dan Kovacs and Jamie Jordan, but had to settle for a point after Malmesbury Victoria battled back to gain a 2-2 draw.

Season #3

FA Cup Replays: There were a pair of away wins in the two FA Cup replays on Tuesday evening, with Ollie Barnes’ 111th minute penalty edging Clevedon Town past Bitton, while Josh Wadham, David O’Hare, Steve Murray and Craig Herrod were on the scoresheet as Street defeated Hallen 4-1. Bridport were victors in their replay on Wednesday night, with a 37th minute strike from Ed Butcher helping them to a 1-0 win over St Austell in front of a bumper crowd at St Mary’s Field.

Premier Division: Street made a winning start to their league campaign, with their forward line firing on all cylinders in a 4-0 win over Longwell Green Sports. After the home side had gone ahead in the third minute through David O’Hare, they added a second just before the half-hour mark when Steve Murray converted a penalty after he had been felled in the box. The result was put beyond doubt just before the break with Harry Foster scoring a third, before the same man wrapped up the victory with his second after half time. Bradford Town were another side to enjoy a big win, with three different goalscorers finding the net in their 3-0 triumph over Wellington. A long range effort from Will Haliston was the difference between the sides in the first-half, with his 20th minute strike breaking the deadlock for the hosts. Martin Lenihan then crossed for Anthony Conradi to make it 2-0 with his head, before Dan Cottle added a third in the closing stages. Bridport’s first league fixture of the season ended in victory for the Dorset side, with Richard Hedbitch and Leighton Thomas both impressing and scoring braces in a 4-1 win away at Cadbury Heath. At the Hand Stadium, Clevedon Town and Bitton were forced to share the points following a 1-1 draw. Former Weston-Super-Mare marksman Kane Ingram fired Clevedon into an 11th minute lead, but Bitton fought back with Tom Knighton knocking in a second-half leveller. At Silver Street, Odd Down came from two goals down to salvage a 2-2 draw away at Willand Rovers. Brett Worbey’s penalty was followed by a Luke Mortimore strike to put Willand 2-0 up at the break, but they were unable to hang on with Kye Simpson scoring twice after the break to maintain Odd Down’s unbeaten start to the campaign. Melksham Town fought back from an early deficit to win 3-1 at last season’s strugglers Hallen. Tyler Davis took just ten minutes to break the deadlock for the home side before Melksham began to gain the ascendancy with a double from Gary Higdon and a Luke Ballinger strike handing Darren Perrin’s side all three points. Buckland Athletic’s entertaining start to the season continued, with goals from Charlie Johansen, Richard Groves, Jared Lewington and Chris Wright edging them to a 4-3 win over Chipping Sodbury Town, while Charlie Aldom scored the only goal of the game in Cribbs 1-0 victory away at Shepton Mallet. Wells City survived an early sending off and a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 with Hengrove Athletic. The visitors found themselves two-up inside half an hour thanks to goals from James Boyle and Jack Fillingham, and their job seemed ever easier once Paul Comley was dismissed for a poor challenge. However, Wells fought back, and after substitute Darren Maynard had cut the deficit in half, Louis Hadgi popped up to grab a deserved equaliser. Brislington bounced back from defeat in midweek to beat Bridgwater Town with goals in either half from Chris Gardener and Danny Hunt.

First Division: Westbury United’s promising start to the season continued, with a 2-0 win over Radstock Town helping them to reach the summit of the table at this very early stage. Jamie Jordan was the star for Westbury on his 50th appearance for the club, laying on an assist for Ricky Hulbert’s 16th minute opener, before he added some gloss to the scoreline by adding a goal of his own late in the piece. At Weymouth Street, Warminster Town’s perfect start continued, with Jack Miluk and Lewis Graham each scoring doubles in their 4-0 win over Malmesbury Victoria. In the game of the day, Bristol Telephones defeated Calne Town 3-2 despite going behind on two occasions. Goals from Stuart Windsor and Billy Gleed saw Calne take one goal leads, but they were clawed back twice by Lee Pitman and James Batch, before Dhani Golding scored the winner with his third of the fledgling season. Chippenham Park kept their third clean sheet of the season, meaning Garry Lock’s single goal gave them a 1-0 win over Ashton & Backwell United, while there was a disappointing 0-0 draw between Portishead Town and Chard Town. Goals from Josh Williams and Josh Southway helped Oldland Abbotonians claim a 2-1 win over Cheddar as they moved up to third in the table, while Matt Morley scored the only goal of the game in Wincanton Town’s 1-0 victory over Almondsbury. There was a big away at Cothelstone Road, where Keynsham Town powered to a 4-0 triumph over Bishops Lydeard. Matt Long gave the K’s the lead in the 15th minute with a strong finish, before the prolific Matt Brown doubled their lead from outside the box ten minutes after the break. Keynsham then waited till late on before adding more goals, with Samuel Duggan and Craig Wilson each slotting home in the final five minutes. Roman Glass St George handed Corsham Town their third defeat of the season, after winning 3-1 at Oaklands Park. Drew Hamilton-Dunn tapped in for the opener, before Corsham hit back with Liam Fulham equalising from close range. Hamilton-Dunn doubled his tally before leaving the field injured, with Sam Wentland fired home a third for the Saints. The fixture at Nursteed Road ended all square with Harry Vandervell scoring the equaliser for Sherborne Town in their 1-1 draw away at Devizes Town for whom Tom Slater had given an early lead. Bishop Sutton and Welton Rovers also shared the points after drawing 2-2 at Lakeview. Mason Dagger had put the home side ahead in the 22nd minute, before Charlie Babb drew Welton level from a well-worked set-piece. Jaiden Savery then fired Rovers ahead, but they couldn’t hold on and as the home side pushed for a leveller they managed to force one home two minutes from time.

Westbury United 2 Radstock Town 0Toolstation Western League Division One

IN the end two incidents either side of half-time which could have influenced the outcome of this match were consigned to memory as Westbury United overcame a resolute Radstock Town side to leapfrog them and go top of Division One at a sunny Meadow Lane on Saturday writes Kerry Miller.Goals from Ricky Hulbert and Jamie Jordan were enough to put the Greens level at the top of the fledgling league table alongside Chippenham Park but ahead on goal difference going into the derby with struggling Corsham Town on Tuesday night. However, it could have been all over bar the shouting if Dan Kovacs’ appeal for a penalty had gone his way instead of a free-kick and a caution for an alleged dive and his open goal miss just after the break had gone in instead of hitting the side netting.Radstock arrived having won both openers and scored eight goals in the process but holidays and unavailability had robbed them of key players as they looked to settle on Westbury’s immaculate looking surface. The teams cancelled each other out in what was a quiet start until Simon Millard’s free-kick came to nothing for the Miners and his half volley from a corner was touched over by home keeper Lewis Porter. It was all Radstock until Kovacs was given too much room on the left and as he went down under a challenge, referee Declan Brown was no more than five yards away and ruled against the former Melksham Town man, with a free-kick and a caution.Radstock’s let off lasted two minutes as they were found square again and Hulbert was through to lob Glen Murley from 25 yards to give Westbury the lead on 17 minutes. Town responded well and Luke Ingram’s cross was deflected towards Matt Minnis but it glanced off his head rather than testing Porter and Westbury escaped. By then the game had picked up pace and Kovacs had a snap shot saved while Danny Lock’s cross was just missed by James Rustell and Minnis around the half hour.Town were showing no signs of tailing off and Rustell had a flying header then Jack Biddecombe was wide with a 25 yarder before the break which came with the home side a goal to the good.Kovacs should have doubled the score just after the break when a back pass to Murley bounced up and he was robbed but with the goal gaping Kovacs hit the side netting and the golden chance was gone. Radstock sensed they were still in the game and upped the ante and briefly tempers flared but player-joint manager Joe Kirkpatrick’s free-kick was not cleared and Matt Jones saw his volley blocked. Both sides made changes just past the hour mark with Kovacs giving way to Mark Robinson and Millard replaced by Matt Mead but injuries began to disrupt the play and with a succession of free-kicks Jordan was a touch lucky to escape a booking for two clear trips but he was involved when Westbury broke quickly and Hulbert lobbed over with ten minutes left.Radstock threw everything forward and Minnis had an overhead kick go wide before he was in on goal to tuck the ball home with two minutes gone but the linesman’s flag was up for offside and Westbury escaped. Deep into injury time Jordan gathered the ball with Radstock’s defence struggling and his shot was deflected past Murley by the hapless Tom Stocks and rolled home to clinch the three points and top spot in Division One.

Westbury United have played at their Meadow Lane home since 1934 when it was purchased for £475 and arguably the old girl has never looked in better fettle. Chairman Matt Bright and secretary Greg Coulson are rightly proud of the ground which has been given a long awaited brush up with new pitch surrounds and a paint job, with long term sponsors Eastern Paradise renaming the main stand which has stood straddling the half way line since the original wooden stand burned down in 1971.Greg is also chairman of the youth section and he said: “We have had a goal of setting up a pathway for the youth players at Westbury to come through to the first team and we now have three adult teams here.” The club has formed a development side which makes its debut in the Trowbridge and District League next month which will be made up of all local players with the reserve side in the Wiltshire County League which began at Malmesbury Vics Development today. Both men are coaches and Matt added: “The development team is an extra step and it has had the added bonus of bringing some parents down to the club, with a crowd of 129 attending the first team game against Malmesbury in midweek. ‘There have been some new faces at the ground with some locals giving the side a look and it is up to us to make sure they return with a smile.”The father and son management team of Neil and Joe Kirkpatrick took over back in February and having steered the club to safety have now begun a rebuild with Dan Kovacs and Ricky and Steve Hulbert coming across from Melksham Town while keeper Lewis Porter has re-joined his local club once more. Neil Kirkpatrick has a fine history with league titles at Larkhall Athletic and he has set a target of promotion in three years, which looks well on the cards as their side hit top by the third game of the new campaign. The club looked to new principle sponsor Southern Co-operative, where youth coach Nick Jones secured funding as he works with all the teams helping with physical fitness and personal coaching, having been with the U15 side since they were Under 7.It all looks good for the White Horse Men who are geared up for a brand new era and with neighbours Chippenham Town and Melksham Town enjoying life in higher leagues and a new ground , there seems no reason why Westbury United cannot make it a Wiltshire treble.Kerry Miller
