Project Definition

“Moving message display using 89S52 microcontroller”

• A moving message display is made by using microcontroller IC 89S52 and dot matrix LED display.

• Main features of moving message display is in built programming controlled by the PC with interfacing using max 232.

Introduction

Here, we use 16 single digit alphanumeric displays over the LED dot-matrix type since the former is much cost effective and has less programming burden compared to others.

We have used Atmel’s AT89S52 microcontroller as the heart

of the circuit along with IC 74HC595 which is a 8 bit shift register, LED displays and power supply unit in the circuit.

We have programmed to move the message from the

rightmost display to the left and the message stays stationary for a few seconds when the first character reaches the leftmost display, then it continues to move.

Outline Part IIn this part, the task that was undertaken was to design the main

circuit. For designing, first step was to study the circuit diagram provided

by Electro Plast control and then purchase the required components from the market.

The PCB layout was prepared using EAGLE software and the final design was prepared.

The components were mounted on PCB and the required fixation was carried out.

The final circuit diagram of the main circuit is as shown in the preceding slide.

Outline Part IIWe are designing the circuit which will act as an interface

between the LED based moving message display circuit and PC. The interface circuit will use max 232 and AT90S2313 IC. The working of the circuit will be checked by giving different

inputs through the computer using “KEIL μ VISION 3” software.Right now, we are working on designing the programmer circuit

as shown in the block diagram. The designing is successfully completed and the programming

will be completed by the end of this month. The designed programmer circuit is as shown in preceding slide.

Merits of Moving Message Display

• Get your messages noticed with a scrolling display.

• The display board makes it easy to input, store and change messages.

• A variety of messages can be stored, and, if desired, the sign can display the time, day and date.

• No complicated programming procedure.

Demerits of Moving Message Display

High power consumption. It is costly compared to LCD.

Areas of Application

• Banks and offices.

• Airports and railway stations.

• Factories and Industries.

• Showrooms, hotels and restaurants.

• There are many other day to day applications .

CONCLUSIONIt may be concluded that the project has

helped us to develop a deep practical knowledge of the AT89S52 microcontroller.

The designing of the interface circuit has indeed proved to be a challenging task and we will surely come out with fruitful outcomes.
