Basic Theme

Now, information technology is in a drastic developmental progress.

Let us see this in terms of 10 years, 100 years

and 1000 years.

Why is this?

My Private Awareness

Apr. 7th , 2003 Astro Boy was born.

Page 7: 02harashima1eng.ppt

In 1980s, Japan was said to outpace the U.S. in field of computer.

The result is that Japan is far behind the U.S. now.

Let us see how information technology has developed in terms of 10 years.

Page 9: 02harashima1eng.ppt

Let me introduce myself here.

Hiroshi Harashima

Born in Tokyo on Sept. 12th, 1945

Professor, Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies ( Department of Information and Communication Engineering )

An expert in communication engineering

Also, a researcher of facial studies.

Interested in fusion of art and science.

Almost same years old as computer.

Page 11: 02harashima1eng.ppt

Computer became 60 years old last year.

By this time(1975-1985)…Research on artificial intelligence became the forefront.

Computer began to challenge brain !People thought Japan would outrun the U.S.

Page 15: 02harashima1eng.ppt

There was a paradigm shift of computer in the mid-80s.

Now, the U.S. is leading the worldin the field of computer.

My Private Awareness

From 1980s, computer started to aim not for brain but for society.

Page 20: 02harashima1eng.ppt

In fact, this started in 1960s.

Page 21: 02harashima1eng.ppt

1969 ARPANET ( the Pentagon ) Headstream of Internet

The technology originated in 60s.

Since it founded its way to be a multimediain the late 1980s, computer became “an information environment = media” forindividual person.

Page 25: 02harashima1eng.ppt

Multimedia boom from late1980s

  1986 the International CD-ROM Conference

( It became possible to handle movies and audios on computer. )

Various information machineries were born then.

  Macintosh(84), CD-ROM(85), Nintendo ( 83), Super Mario Brothers(85) notebook computer(89) ・・・ New concepts were born.

cyber space (87), virtual reality (89), World- Wide- Web ( WWW )(89)

Page 26: 02harashima1eng.ppt

In 1990s, multimedia boom in industries and government.

Network became the hero.

   Information Super Highway(91) Internet : Mosaic(93) Mobile : cellular phone …

IT became accessible in 2000s.

   Broadband ( ADSL, light … ) Mobile ( cellular phone, wireless LAN… ) Digital Broadcast ( BS, digital terrestrial, one-segment )

Page 27: 02harashima1eng.ppt

That was the history of computer’s40’ s (1985-1995)50’ s (1995-2005)

Here, let me introduce researches in my 40’s and 50’s.

・ intelligent communication・ knowledge-based communication・ semantic communication

・ self-evolving communication communications that users can show their own creativity ・ communication that makes money( communication that incubates net business ) → free-of-charge broadband
