Valentine’s Day Around The WorldUnited StatesIn the US, children celebrate
Valentine's Day with great enthusiasm. Inkeeping with their interest, many schoolshold Valentine's Day programmes wherelittle students perform songs, dance, skitsand plays. Kids handcraft gifts and cardson this ocassion and present them to theirfriends and teachers. In some schools, thechildren organize a classroom party andput all the valentines into a box they havedecorated. The celebration culminateswith a teacher or child distributing thecards. Older students construct candybaskets and gifts, and place on themcards trimmed with hearts and fat, wingedchildren called cupids. They also organizedances and parties. A collective endeavoris made to make the day a special one.
BritainIn Britain, St Valentine's Day is cele-
brated with great fanfare and gaiety. Likein many other countries, the common cel-ebrations of the day has people express-ing love for their beloved with gifts likeflowers, cards, chocolates and other spe-cial items. The traditions of the celebra-tions of Valentine's Day differs in differentregions of the country but one uniformcustom is the singing of special songs bychildren. All over Britain, children sing spe-cial songs related to the ocassion and arerewarded with gifts like candy, fruit ormoney. Another popular tradition followedin some areas of England is the baking ofvalentine buns with caraway seeds, plums,or raisins. This is believed to be a way ofcelebrating agarian productivity. This con-nection with fertility and the similar date ofcelebration are probably the reasons whymany writers link the festival of Lupercaliawith Valentine's Day.
Composing verses is another extreme-ly well-known Valentine's Day custom ofBritain. About a month earlier toValentine's Day, leading tabloids andreputed magazines publish sonnets andverses to commemorate the ocassion. Thetradition owes its origin to the British poetswho have penned some of the best lovepoems and the majority of the romanticverses associated with Saint Valentine.
JapanIn Japan, Valentine's Day is observed
on Feb. 14, but the celebration of love trulyends on March 14, known as the "WhiteDay." On the first date, women presentchocolates or gifts to the men they love to
express their feelings for them. Giftingchocolates is a typical way to celebrateValentine's day in Japan for chocolate isthe most popular gift in the country.Hence, it is a must for JapaneseValentine's Day celebrations. Gift shops allover Japan pile their shelves with choco-late a month before Valentine's Day. MostJapanese females believe however, thatstore-bought chocolate is not a gift of truelove. Hence, they tend to make the con-fection all by themselves.
But it's also common for women togive chocolates to any man close to them, such as co-workers and male friends, whom they don't actually love. This kind ofchocolate-gift is called giri-choco whichmean chocolates given because of obliga-tions. Men who receive chocolates or giftson Valentine's day are supposed to returnthe favor to the women on March 14,exactly a month after Valentine's Day. Alsoknown as "White Day", this is the timewhen men are to give back a gift to thewomen who gave them gifts just a monthbefore. The tradition is believed to havebeen introduced by a marshmallow com-pany in the 1960s.
KoreaThe Valentine's Day celebrations in
Korea is quite akin to the Japanese obser-vance of the festival. As in Japan, Korea
witnesses gifting of chocolates and can-dies from females to males. The favor isreturned the same way by the men onMarch 14, which is referred to as "WhiteDay" similar to the custom in Japan. But"White Day" here is a Valentine's Day inits own right as many young men confesstheir love for the first time to their sweet-hearts on this ocassion.
And then there is April 14, also knownas "Black Day", which has been speciallyset aside for those young people whohave no particular romantic partners. Thecurious name of the day probably comesfrom the fact that on this date, individualswho are not in any relationship get togeth-er and partake of Jajang noodles, whichare black in color.
GermanyThe German celebration of Valentine's
Day is nearly the same as elsewhere inthe world. For Germans, the festival is acelebration of love and a time to spendwith their sweethearts. In Germany, it iscustomary for a young man to present hisbeloved with flowers on February 14.Valentine gifts in Germany are usually inthe shape of love tokens, complete withlovely messages. But these are not entire-ly restricted to Valentine's Day celebra-tions, and can be gifted on any occasionof a joyous nature.
