We are wrapping up a very suc-
cessful annual conference held
in Las Vegas at the end of April,
where Steve Babitsky of SEAK
spoke on “Marketing and
Growing Your Expert Witness
Practice” at the optional pre-
seminar before giving his
“Masters Program: Advanced
Testifying Skills for Expert
Witnesses.” Our thanks go out
to Steve and SEAK for their
excellent programming. Over
100 experts attended the three-
day event, which was a finan-
cial success for FEWA.
The FEWA Board of Directors
met for their spring quarterly
meeting the day before the
conference and got charged up
and ready to grow the member-
ship of FEWA. Chapter growth,
membership retention and
chapter expansion were dis-
cussed as possible strategic
goals for next year. The Board
agreed to have a strategic plan-
ning session the day before the
next Board meeting in July so
that the planning committee
can focus on what is really
important to FEWA and set
the direction for the future. A
reception followed the Board
meeting, which allowed for
further discussions in a more
relaxed setting.
The program was great, the
food was outstanding and the
venue (the new Cosmopolitan
Hotel on the Strip) was “the
place to be.” It’s not finalized
just yet, but there is a good
chance we may go back to the
Cosmo for next year’s confer-
ence which will probably be
April 26 –28, 2012. Pencil in the
dates now so you don’t miss
another terrific conference! ■

FEWA was
founded as
a nonprofit
in 1994 to
promote
education
and ethics
for expert
witnesses,
and a society of 600 members
in 9 chapters has evolved that
makes this organization unique
since our members are leaders
in so many different professions.
In fact, we are probably one
of the most diverse groups of
professionals ever to exist. The
one thing we have in common,
though, is that we provide
services to the legal community
and our success is ultimately
judged by the trier of fact.
My fellow officers and I have an
ongoing debate about whether
the most important aspect of
FEWA is education, fellowship,
or networking. But our very
successful April 28–30 education
conference in Las Vegas con-
vinced me that our education
programs are most important
and the naturally occurring
fellowship that leads to net-
working is profitable. At this
conference, Steve Babitsky
presented “Advanced Testifying
Skills for Experts,” and Steve’s
insight and experience provided
us with the tools to do a better
job. In fact, I am working
through my list of things that
have to change in my office!
We could not have enjoyed the
success we had in Las Vegas
without Executive Director Don
Gilbert, his wife Jane, and his
daughter Lynn. For those of
you who are not yet members
of FEWA, we especially invite
you to contact Lynn or Don
([email protected]) and join us
as we attempt to expand our
sphere of influence by increasing
our membership and educating
and providing fellowship to
ethical forensic experts. ■
FEWA Education Programs Are Most Important“Join us as we expand our sphere of influence … to ethical forensic experts.”

SECOND QUARTER 2011 • FORENSIC Expert Witness ASSOCIATION
JACK POE, MAI, Elected as 2011 President of ForensicExpert AssociationReprinted from AIA’s News
Online.
As the 2011 president of the
Forensic Expert Witness
Association, Jack Poe, MAI, says
he will emphasize fellowship,
continue the organization’s
transition to a member-driven
association, and communicate
the value of expert witnesses to
relevant stakeholders.
Poe, president of Jack Poe
Company Incorporated in
Dallas, took office Jan. 1 after
serving as vice president in
2010 and as a national board
member in 2009. His one-year
term is renewable, if he seeks
re-election.
FEWA members are professionals
as expert witnesses, with expe-
rience, training and skill in
their specific disciplines.
Started in 1994, the organiza-
tion has approximately 500
members in nine chapters over
the four United States regions.
A 25-year member of the
Appraisal Institute, Poe
received his MAI designation in
1988. He joined FEWA in 2007
when the Texas Chapter was
formed by Rudy Robinson,
MAI, and Steve Crosson, MAI.
He served as the Texas
Chapter’s president in 2010.
For the Appraisal Institute, Poe
has served on the national
Appraisal Standards Committee,
Experience Review Panel,
Grievance Committee and
Communications Committee,
the last two as chair. He was
the 2002 president of the
North Texas Chapter, among
numerous other chapter posi-
tions, including serving on its
board of directors from 1996–
1998, 2003 and 2006–2008.
In addition to appraising and
providing expert testimony, Poe
is deeply involved in his com-
munity of Lake Texoma, Texas.
He served as president of the
Locust volunteer fire depart-
ment for four years, was the
founding president of the
Grayson County Association of
Fire Chiefs, and served on the
Grayson County Emergency
Planning committee. He also
has a steel fabrication company
that builds private boathouses.
He and his wife of 30 years,
Brenda, live in a house that he
built on the lake. “I am big
time into tools, wood, metal
and motors and rarely hire
anybody to fix or build any-
thing for me,” Poe said. He
also counts among his accom-
plishments his three daughters,
who were all home-schooled
before heading off to receive
college degrees. “I now enjoy
almost daily contact with them
and two granddaughters that
we have been blessed with in
the last two years,” Poe said. ■
