«BIM IS PART OF EVERDAY LIFE»

IttenBrechbühl handles all new projects with the aid of Building Information Modeling (BIM). This decision is based on our good experience with BIM. All those involved – clients, technical planners, planners and architects – benefit from transparent communication. The dialogue with technical planners via Open BIM now works well and early coordination of planners working on the 3D model has proved especially valuable. IttenBrechbühl is also throwing our weight behind establishing BIM in Switzerland beyond just our company. Our specialists pass on their insights through user workshops. We are represented in several specialist bodies with professional connections and also at univer-sities, enabling us to actively impart our know-how. As committed planners, we share our practical experience with our professional colleagues: for us it is clear that BIM has a bright future, and we want to help shape this future to enhance the quality of our work.

VIRTUAL REALITY – HYPE OR HELPFUL?

The hype surrounding BIM hasn‘t even peaked when the next mega trend hits the world of architecture: Virtual Reality (VR). The benefits are clear for all to see: with Virtual Reality, you can walk through rooms and experience them long before the first bricks are laid.

IttenBrechbühl makes specific use of the various VR technologies. If a client is to quickly imagine a room, sometimes even with regard to furniture, colour scheme and materials, simple Google cardboard viewers will do the job. The empty box, a mobile phone, an app and a file – and you have a virtual 3D room before you in which you can look around. However, if the dimensions of a room are of elemental importance for its design, IttenBrechbühl uses roomscale VR hardware such as HTC Vive or Oculus Rift. A surgeon, for ex-ample, can use it to move around in the virtually created room to check the spatial working arrangements in a planned operating theatre «one-to-one» and decide where the equipment should be located.

We believe in the appropriate use of Virtual Reality. Merely showing off does not justify the additional effort. Used properly, on the other hand, VR offers additional options and makes communication between clients, users and planners more secure.

AND THE WINNER IS ...

In 2016, IttenBrechbühl won the Arc Award BIM Innovation & Performan-ce with the project SwissFEL. In October 2017, we want to continue on that path of success. We have submitted the following projects:

Glasi Quartier Bülach-Nord (ZH) (Category «Collaboration»)

The «Glasi», an urban quarter with about 560 apartments and more than 20,000 m2 commercial space, will be developed on the site of the former glassworks. BIM challenge: the project with 21 structures and a 3-level underground garage gives the concept of coordination a whole new dimension, placing enormous demands on both BIM and project management. In addition to locating the structures in virtual space, dif-ferences in BIM know-how must also be compensated. To do so, an in-ternal test project with «homework» for the specialist disciplines was established. Based on this project, the issue management was tested and trained in Solibri.
