‘King’s Speech’ shows that a little can go a long way A simple biopic of a future king. An elegant tale of two unlikely friends. A strange way to describe the winner of a Golden Globe and a con- tender for an astounding 12 Oscars, no doubt. But “The King’s Speech” is no less than an utter master- piece, if only be- cause of how sim- ple (and yet com- plex) the story is. Weaving together a story of friendship, with layers of gut-wrenching, intimate emotions lacing through it all, “King’s Speech” delivers on near- ly every level, and it does it without the pomp and circumstance most kings demand. The plot begins with an embarassing debacule by the the younger son of King George V of England (Michael Gambon, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1”), Duke of York Albert Frederick Arthur George (Colin Firth, “A Single Man”), who cannot control his lifelong stammer at a large public speaking event during the later years of the Great De- pression, leading up to World War II. Right away it’s obvious how traumat- ic this debilitating handicap is. You can see it in his eyes; you can see it in the crowd’s eyes. In an effort to stymie this less-than-regal attribute, Bertie, as his family calls him, undergoes an un- orthodox treatment, involving marbles, which came much closer to killing the duke than alle- viating him of his stammer. His supportive, if overprotective, wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bon- ham Carter, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1”), who actually pos- sesses some natural wit, decides to seek out anoth- er form of help (although Bertie explicitly told her he was done seeking treatment). There is where Lionel Logue (Ge- offrey Rush, “Pirates of the Caribbean”) subtly and brilliantly comes into the mix. As a speech ther- apist, he accepts Bertie as his client, although it comes with some caveats: They have to meet in his multi-hued office every- day and call each other by more informal names. Lionel simply flourishes in this dynamic, the ying to Bertie’s yang. He push- es Bertie in a way that is culturally unacceptable, taking liberties with a member of the royal fami- ly and generally being pushy. However, during the course of the film, Bertie and Lionel work together to overcome the challenges in an excruci- atingly touching (if just a bit saccharin) manner. The film then follows his- tory’s beckoning, ending in a grand announcement from Bertie, now King George VI, to the world that England is at war with Nazi Germany. The absolute highlight of this film is the one-on- one between Firth and Rush. The banter, the emotion, the growth be- tween the characters is breathtaking, undoubted- ly worthy of a multitude of awards. It’s organic to the core, believeable in every sense. The dichoto- my between the two men at first is striking. Bertie is quite tight-lipped with his past, and Lionel’s ar- rogance sometimes gets the best of him, but these traits only underscore the importance of the grad- ual emergence of a lifelong friendship. But the same simplicity that makes this film so memorable is the same factor that can deter some viewers. In all reali- ty, it’s wartime England, and the story about a stammering duke is hard- ly what most would consider important. And compared with his older brother, David, later King Edward VIII (Guy Pearce, “Memento”), who abdi- cates the throne in order to marry his already-di- vorced love (not to mention the Nazi associa- tions later on), Bertie’s life is downright banal. “King’s Speech,” if lack- ing anything, may not possess enough pizazz for the regular movie-goer. But when it comes right down to it, the most capi- tivating aspect of “King’s Speech” is how simple it is. There’s no overly dra- matic view of the royal family, no dastardly se- crets waiting to be exposed. It’s subtle and nuanced, gently nudging you rather than forcibly dragging you. In the end, it was a story about two people becoming friends in a most unlikely way. It’s about growing up and accepting life, changing what you can and dealing with what you can’t. In a word, it’s human. Five stars out of five. Dominic Baez is the copy editor/paginator for the East Oregonian. The deal closed shortly before midnight on Friday. The takeover gave the cable-hookup company 51 percent control of NBC Uni- versal, which owns the nation's fourth-ranked broadcaster, NBC; the Uni- versal Pictures movie studio and related theme parks; and a bevy of cable channels including Bravo, E! and USA. The combination had raised fears that Comcast might abuse its control of NBC Universal to favor its most valuable cus- tomers: the 23 million who rely on it for cable TV service and the 17 million who pay for Internet connections. But the Justice Department and Feder- al Communications Commission imposed conditions that prevent Comcast from keep- ing to itself NBC Universal's popular shows such as "The Office" and movies including "Despicable Me" for the next several years. NBC's "30 Rock" on Thursday night spoofed Comcast's impending takeover from General Electric Co. As a clock bell sound- ed, a neon "GE" atop an office building fizzled out and was replaced by a "K'' inside a swoosh resembling Comcast's logo. "Wow, out with GE, in with Kabletown," said Tina Fey's character, Liz Lemon. "Seems like one of us should sing 'The Cir- cle Game' right now." Conditions imposed on Comcast were se- rious, though. Regulators forced Comcast to make the full suite of NBC Universal content avail- able as a single package to online competitors on terms comparable to those reached with more established rivals such as Dish Network Corp. and DirecTV.

‘King’s Speech’shows that alittle can go along way

Asimple biopic ofa future king. Anelegant tale oftwo unlikely

friends. A strange way todescribe the winner of aGolden Globe and a con-tender for an astounding12 Oscars, no doubt. But“TheKing’sSpeech”is no lessthan anuttermaster-piece, ifonly be-cause ofhow sim-ple (andyet com-plex) thestory is. Weaving togethera story of friendship, withlayers of gut-wrenching,intimate emotions lacingthrough it all, “King’sSpeech” delivers on near-ly every level, and it doesit without the pomp andcircumstance most kingsdemand.

The plot begins with anembarassing debacule bythe the younger son ofKing George V of England(Michael Gambon, “Harry

Potter and the DeathlyHallows: Part 1”), Duke ofYork Albert FrederickArthur George (ColinFirth, “A Single Man”),who cannot control hislifelong stammer at alarge public speakingevent during the lateryears of the Great De-pression, leading up toWorld War II. Right awayit’s obvious how traumat-ic this debilitatinghandicap is. You can seeit in his eyes; you can seeit in the crowd’s eyes. Inan effort to stymie thisless-than-regal attribute,Bertie, as his family callshim, undergoes an un-orthodox treatment, involving marbles, whichcame much closer tokilling the duke than alle-viating him of hisstammer. His supportive,if overprotective, wife,Elizabeth (Helena Bon-ham Carter, “Harry Potterand the Deathly Hallows:Part 1”), who actually pos-sesses some natural wit, decides to seek out anoth-er form of help (althoughBertie explicitly told herhe was done seekingtreatment). There iswhere Lionel Logue (Ge-offrey Rush, “Pirates ofthe Caribbean”) subtlyand brilliantly comes intothe mix. As a speech ther-apist, he accepts Bertieas his client, although itcomes with some caveats:

They have to meet in hismulti-hued office every-day and call each otherby more informal names.Lionel simply flourishesin this dynamic, the yingto Bertie’s yang. He push-es Bertie in a way that isculturally unacceptable, taking liberties with amember of the royal fami-ly and generally beingpushy. However, duringthe course of the film,Bertie and Lionel worktogether to overcome thechallenges in an excruci-atingly touching (if just abit saccharin) manner. The film then follows his-tory’s beckoning, endingin a grand announcementfrom Bertie, now KingGeorge VI, to the worldthat England is at warwith Nazi Germany.

The absolute highlightof this film is the one-on-one between Firth andRush. The banter, theemotion, the growth be-tween the characters isbreathtaking, undoubted-ly worthy of a multitudeof awards. It’s organic tothe core, believeable inevery sense. The dichoto-my between the two men

at first is striking. Bertieis quite tight-lipped withhis past, and Lionel’s ar-rogance sometimes getsthe best of him, but thesetraits only underscore theimportance of the grad-ual emergence of alifelong friendship.

But the same simplicitythat makes this film somemorable is the samefactor that can detersome viewers. In all reali-ty, it’s wartime England, and the story about astammering duke is hard-ly what most wouldconsider important. Andcompared with his olderbrother, David, later King

Edward VIII (Guy Pearce,“Memento”), who abdi-cates the throne in orderto marry his already-di-vorced love (not tomention the Nazi associa-tions later on), Bertie’slife is downright banal.“King’s Speech,” if lack-ing anything, may notpossess enough pizazz forthe regular movie-goer.

But when it comes rightdown to it, the most capi-tivating aspect of “King’sSpeech” is how simple itis. There’s no overly dra-matic view of the royalfamily, no dastardly se-crets waiting to beexposed. It’s subtle and

nuanced, gently nudgingyou rather than forciblydragging you. In the end,it was a story about twopeople becoming friendsin a most unlikely way. It’s about growing up andaccepting life, changingwhat you can and dealingwith what you can’t. In aword, it’s human.

Comcast takes control of NBCUniversal; FCC imposes rules

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The nation'slargest cable TV company, Comcast Corp.,took control of NBC Universal after thegovernment shackled its behavior in thecoming years to protect online video serv-ices such as Netflix and Hulu.

The deal closed shortly before midnighton Friday.

The takeover gave the cable-hookup

company 51 percent control of NBC Uni-versal, which owns the nation'sfourth-ranked broadcaster, NBC; the Uni-versal Pictures movie studio and relatedtheme parks; and a bevy of cable channelsincluding Bravo, E! and USA.

The combination had raised fears thatComcast might abuse its control of NBCUniversal to favor its most valuable cus-tomers: the 23 million who rely on it forcable TV service and the 17 million whopay for Internet connections.

But the Justice Department and Feder-al Communications Commission imposedconditions that prevent Comcast from keep-ing to itself NBC Universal's popular showssuch as "The Office" and movies including"Despicable Me" for the next several years.

NBC's "30 Rock" on Thursday nightspoofed Comcast's impending takeover fromGeneral Electric Co. As a clock bell sound-ed, a neon "GE" atop an office buildingfizzled out and was replaced by a "K'' insidea swoosh resembling Comcast's logo.

"Wow, out with GE, in with Kabletown,"said Tina Fey's character, Liz Lemon."Seems like one of us should sing 'The Cir-cle Game' right now."

Conditions imposed on Comcast were se-rious, though.

Regulators forced Comcast to make thefull suite of NBC Universal content avail-able as a single package to onlinecompetitors on terms comparable to thosereached with more established rivals suchas Dish Network Corp. and DirecTV.
