MODULE INTRODUCTIONINDUSTRIAL DESIGN01

The rst module gives beginner students a representative picture of the Industrial Design programme. You will be introduced to the phases of an (industrial) design process, design skills, design techniques and you will acquire basic technical knowledge. With the task of designing a consumer product, you will get familiar with the various phases involved in all design processes and the steps you have to take within those phases. The two module sections Design Sketching and Introduction to Industrial Design are closely linked to the project. The complementary subjects are mathematics plus technical module sections on statics and materials. You will discover how forces and distortions affect products and the consequences of material behaviour on choices of materials.

MODULE IDEATION02

The focus in the second module is on creating a concept. You will learn how to design a consumer product, with an emphasis on generating and visualizing (partial) solutions that take into account the form, functionality and (technical) feasibility. The module sections on Construction, Production 1, Technical Product Modelling 1 and Discovery all t within the project. The rst three module sections focus on (technical) feasibility, whereas in Discovery you will learn to make designs based on abstractions, and to design artefacts or objects. The complementary subject is Mathematics.

MODULE REALISATIONOF PRODUCTS03

The focus in the third module is the development and (physical) realisation of a product concept. You will examine the relationships between geometry, the material and the production process and also take a look at both small-series production and mass production. This module builds on the module Ideation. You will add detail to a concept and immediately apply the knowledge you have gained, turning a small-series product into a working prototype, together with your project group (Production 1). You will work out the product for mass production in detail on paper. The module sections Design Sketching 2 and Production 2 are closely linked to the project. The complementary subjects are Mechanics of Materials and Mathematics.

MODULE SMARTPRODUCTS04

The last module of the rst year centers how to design a product that behaves intelligently. You will do this using a combination of mechanics, electronics and software solutions. As part of a design team that is given a general assignment for developing a ‘smart product’. Your team will start by analysing the target group. The next step will be to generate the most suitable product concept. The result is a design with a prototype. Your challenge will be to nd a balance between the partial solutions found in the various do-mains (mechatronics, sensors and software). You will also look at human-product interaction when a user interface is tested in prac-tice.

MODULE HUMAN-PRODUCTRELATIONS05

In the module Human-Product Relations, you will investigate all aspects of the relationship between the human and the product. To do so, the attention is particular given to methods for qualitative research, exploratory research and a reection on the role and opportunities of the designer in the design process. You will also look at the various roles of the user and the product, and the various levels at which these relationships are created: the individual level, the social level (in contact with others) and the societal levels (culture, environment and so on). As a preparation for Consumer Products (Module 6), you will also expand your technical professional skills in production as well as energy technology and thermodynamics.

MODULE CONSUMERPRODUCTS06

As multiple disciplines play important roles in the development of consumer products, the entire development cycle - from portfolio analysis, via market research to the presentation of mock-ups and manufacturability - is relevant in the module Consumer Product. Therefore, you will work in a team of students from the Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Managment and Industrial Design programmes. This product could be anything from a coffee machine to a shaver to beer packaging. A company will give you your assignment, while also sharing specic information about the project topic in guest lectures. You will cover the corresponding theory in lectures such as Graphical Design, Technical Product Modelling 2 and Product-Market Relationship.

MODULE DESIGN FORSPECIFIC USERS07

The focus of the third project in the second year is on designing product for a specic target group. Specic target groups could be people with physically strenuous jobs (bricklayers, remen, police ofcers), children, the elderly or people with disabilities. To create a good product, you must be able to put yourself in the shoes of people from this target group. This requires that you as a designer need to delve into the target group and preferably get in direct touch with them. To do so, you will have lectures and you are handed tools on topics such as Cognitive Ergonomics, Research Methods, Design Sketching 3 and Statistics.

MODULE VIRTUAL PRODUCTDEVELOPMENT08

The nal module of the second year is about learning to deal with the large variety of tools available for designers. The emphasis here is on being able to make a reasoned choice between several possi-bilities, and on being able to integrate tools within the project. In this module you will focus on designing a product using virtual tools. Multiple design variants and iterations play a large role in this. An example of such a project is designing a product-service combination in a public environment, such as a railway ticket ma-chine. In addition to the project, you will take complementary sub-jects: Dynamics and an Introduction to Finite Element Methods.

MODULE MINOR09/10

You can ll the rst semester of the third year according to your own interests. For example, you might opt for in-depth self-study modules, or for broadening your scope by taking modules from other programmes, such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Business Administration. The goal of the HTHT minors is to highlight the societal issues for which the UT is developing High Tech Human Touch solutions through state of the art research. The Crossing Borders minor aims to prepare students for an international environment by giving the opportunity of a phase abroad. A lot of students choose a module that not only suits them but also gives them an advantage on the labour market.

MODULE SYSTEMSIN CONTEXT11

In the module Systems in Context, you will design a complex system in a realistic situation. The complexity of products grows more and more, since the product expectation is getting higher and the product possibilities are larger. This makes it difcult to design such complex products in a way that each part of a system will function properly. Coping with complexity, vague standards and modern technologies are key. In addition of the project you will follow subjects that should applied directly in the project assignment such as Philosophy of Technology, Design and Meaning and Design of Mechatronics and Systems.

MODULE GRADUATION12

This Bachelor’s programme concludes with a Bachelor’s graduation project. During the last six months of your course, you will prepare and create a design for a consumer product or you will execute an in depth research. The student must demonstrate the ability to apply the knowledge and skills learned in the bachelor programme of Industrial Design. The bachelor assignment takes (in preference) place in an external organization under guidance of an Industrial Design employee and a supervisor of the external organization. Students can choose an assignment in which eld of Industrial Design they want to operate, so the assignment not only matches with personal preferences, but also with the direction they want to go on the labour market.
