My dear fellow ECC-ites,
It is indeed a great pleasure to be in touch with you all once again through
ECC News. Inaugurating the Delhi International Airport, our Prime Minister
Dr. Manmohan Singh has said, “We are all very happy and indeed very
proud of the completion of one of the world’s largest airport terminals in a
record time of 37 months. This terminal establishes new global benchmarks
for India.” It is a moment of great pride for all ECC-ites as it is we who made
this great feat possible. It is one more feather on L&T’s cap as a true nation
builder.
As the famous adage goes ‘Well begun is half done’, the first quarter
performance of the Division is quite satisfactory and infuses a lot of optimism
and encouragement to all of us. I believe that the OCs/SBUs will continue
to hold the momentum and take the Division ahead in smart strides to reach the annual targets.
Order Inflow is steadily growing and our OCs have been successful in securing the following orders: Orchid Turfview for DB Hospitality
– 639 cr.; 2 nos. 132 kV substation for ADWEA, Abu Dhabi – 446 cr.; Township for Vedanta Group in Jharsuguda – 410 cr.; IT Park
for TCS at Gandhinagar – 370 cr.; Residential complex for Bengal NRI in Kolkata – 322 cr.; Coal Handling Plant at Singrauli, MP for
Northern Coal Fields – 276 cr.; Multi-storey Aishbagh Towers for Lucknow Development Authority at Lucknow – 245 cr.; Storm water
drainage for Paradip Refinery – 240 cr.; Greenfield Cement plant for Vicat Cement at Gulbarga – 235 cr.; Heidelberg Cement Plant at
Damoh, MP – 282 cr.; 132/33 kV substation for Abu Dhabi Transmission & Despatch company at Fujairah – 151 cr. My hearty
congratulations to all who have made these possible.
L&T’s Corporate Sustainability Report for 2009 has secured international distinction, emerging as the only entry from an Asia-based
company to make it to the Runners-Up position in awards announced by Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) – the world’s premier body
in the sustainability domain. Our commitment to safety is well demonstrated by the array of safety awards that our projects have won.
Eight projects from our MMHW OC have won RoSPA Gold awards: 1. HZL-Dariba (Ph III) Project, 2. Water Supply Project, Barmer to
Bhagukagaon, 3. Water Supply Scheme from Narayanpura to JSW Project, 4. NTPC Simhadri Project, 5. Vizag Steel Plant, 6. Tata Steel
Jamshedpur, 7. Dhamra Port, and 8. SAIL ISP Burnpur. ECC has won three more RoSPA Gold awards for Lafarge Jojobera Cement Plant
(B&F), Heavy Engineering workshop at Sohar (L&T Oman) and 33/11 kV substation at Salalah (L&T Oman). In addition to the above,
L&T-SUCG JV DMRC C-5 project and Vadodara-Bharuch have won Silver awards from RoSPA. It is relatively easy to reach the top than
to remain there. Notwithstanding these safety awards, there has been a spate of accidents recently and therefore my submission to all
fellow ECC-ites is to continue our sincere efforts and be worthy of these awards.

Improving Operational Efficiency in Residential Buildings
Residential Buildings SBU underB&F OC is planning to double itssales with attendant profitability in2010-11 compared to 2009-10. Themajor sites have increased from10numbers to 20 numbers andOrder Book has climbed toRs. 6000 crores.
To cope up with this kind of spurtin growth, conventional wisdom isrequired to augment resources tosupport the operation. However inthese times of resource crunch, thegrowth can also be addressed bybringing in more efficiency andsynergy to the existing system andexecuting with less resources. Alsothere is a need to communicate thegrowth plan and strategic plan ofthe Residential Buildings BU down the hierarchy and acrossvarious department functions.
A two-day workshop was conducted on May 5-6, 2010 toexplore the above and to brainstorm various aspects ofResidential business among all stakeholders of ResidentialBU operation. The invitees for this workshop were stafffrom various functional departments like marketing, architecture and engineering, tendering, supply chainmanagement, execution, competency centres, HR, MIS andaccounts.

Information technology is thedriving force enabling speedy workprogress at Mumbai InternationalAirport project (MIAL). Being thebusiest operating airport in India, the scale of project execution andchallenges are unique in nature.Facilitating the progress of thislandmark project are some of thebest IT minds from ECC.
Considering the vast area andscattered work in progress, our ISDteam was quick in establishingnetwork connectivity in 21 locationsthereby providing IT enabled serviceto users at desk. This initiative wasinstrumental in smooth connectivityfor design and EIP applications and provided electronicsecurity for work in progress locations.
A combination of wired and wireless technology such asWimax and OFC was availed for ensuring connectivity.Application software such as EIP, Document Management,Attendance Recording System and various state-of-the-artsoftware platforms have been implemented at project site.
MIAL is the first large scale project site to implement EIPon-line. ISD has taken special initiatives in implementinglateral training for the new staff. Also this is the first siteto implement the in-house EIP Vidhya EDMS (ElectronicDatabase Management System) which is the backbone ofall correspondences with client, thus rendering a nearlypaperless communication.
All incoming and outgoing official documents are stored, categorised, filtered and managed in efficient manner totake appropriate actions. Receipt and delivery of everycommunication is notified to concerned staff, client by“Alert Mail” and all communications can be viewed fromthe individual desks. This application has successfully

exchanged more than 12000 documents between our projectteam and client. This utility has now been extended to ourmajor sub-contractors also. Drawing documents of EDRCare maintained in organised manner in specified locations. The conceptual architectural drawings prepared from USAare loaded on regular basis. The reviews, comments andmodifications are maintained only through this system.Tendering documents (drawings, specifications, and otherbid documents) are floated to Indian and internationalbidders online.
Distant domestic and international meetings are facilitatedthrough video conferencing. CCTVs are provided at sitegiving the wide coverage of activities. IT Infrastructurecomprising a network of around 700 nodes, 650 PC/Laptop, 55 printers including MFDs, UPS and high endplotters are maintained with minimum downtime.
Mr. K Ravichandran, Head - Information Systems, B&FOC asserts: “Continued, constant and channeled supportfrom OC, Divisional-ISD and all-round co-operation fromthe project team at MIAL enables seamless IT integrationand makes project execution very effective.”

What does it take to build one of India’s
largest deep water ports? Engineering and
technology, no doubt, but a spirited team
displaying an extraordinary ability to go
beyond the present is what makes the
difference.
The Dhamra Port project exemplifies the
skills and capabilities of L&T-ites in
executing the composite tasks involved,
including jetty, material handling and plant
water systems, railway embankment and
bridges, track works, transmission lines,
switch yards and the associated township.
Devoid of basic support facilities, our team
faced a Herculean task in establishing the
essentials even before beginning to execute
the project. Bhadrak, the nearest town and
the only access point, is 62 km away and
a three hour drive from project site. All
logistics and resource needs had to be
planned taking into consideration the
distance and the rugged terrain. It was
hard work all the way but the team rose
to the challenges and is today on the verge
of commissioning the nation’s deepest
port.
Strategically located between Haldia and
Paradip, north of the river Dhamra at a
place called Doshinga, the port will have
a draught of 18 metres which will
accommodate fully laden super-cape size
vessels up to 1,80,000 Dead Weight
Tonnage (DWT) with fully mechanised
facilities for loading and unloading. The
13 berths accorded in the Master Plan will
have a handling capacity of more than 83
million MT annually of dry bulk, liquid
bulk, break bulk and containerised cargo.
This issue of ECC NEWS features our
people who have contributed significantly
towards this landmark project.

A view of the composite tasks executed at Dhamra Port Project
Mr. Pabak Mukhopadhyay (Pabak), Task Force Leader, states, “Implementation of Dhamra Port project is anotherexample of L&T’s commitment and participation towardsdevelopment of India’s economic growth. The Bulk MaterialHandling Business Unit took the leadership role in executingthe entire project.
The tiny village of Dhamra located in the east coast ofIndia in the state of Orissa, is blessed with two mostimportant aspects i.e. (1) deep natural draft (2) naturalbreak water created by the “Konica sand” island which arethe main reasons to conceive the development of Dhamrainto a mega port.
On being convinced about the economic viability of theproject, L&T along with Tata Steel decided to jointlydevelop the port and formed The Dhamra Port CompanyLimited (DPCL), a 50:50 joint venture.”
From the very inception there were lots of apprehensionsthat the construction will endanger the eco life of the region, mainly the nearby breeding ground of the Olive Ridleyturtles. The construction has been carried out understandingthe need to protect the environment and the turtles. TheEnvironment Management Plan drawn by DPCL hasstringent measures to monitor the ambient atmosphericparameters to ensure that none of these parameters exceed
the prescribed limits. Imported turtle friendly lights areused ensuring that the lighting doesn’t spill over to offshorewaters.
The statistics of the last two years has indicated that thehatching of turtles has not been impacted due to thisconstruction. Pabak states, “Managing such a giganticproject with tight cost estimate and time schedule was areal challenge. Due to the remote locale, our team had toestablish the essential support services to facilitate theexecution.
Acquiring the land for 65 km stretch of railway corridorwas the most daunting task but true to the caliber of L&T-ites, we were able to fast-track our construction programmeto meet the challenges caused due to delay in acquiring theland.”
Another special feature of this project is that seven businessunits of three operating companies are involved in theexecution. Pabak asserts that “the challenge was to see thatthe teams perform like an orchestra with only the endresult in mind.
This port will be the first of its kind in India which willhave facilities of highest magnitude and technology andwill be a moment of delight and pride for all L&T-iteswhen it is commissioned shortly.”
Mr. S. Raja (SRa), Project Head, says, “With theconstruction of Dhamra port, a distance dream comes toreality. Executing India’s deepest all weather private seaport which also included 65 km railway line works was themost challenging task. This Herculean feat has been achievedthrough a dedicated team comprising of seven BusinessUnits/Three Operating Companies working together witha common goal to deliver Orissa’s most ambitious integratedport project (Rs. 1440 crores) within the shortest timeframe.” SRa believes that this experience will open greateropportunities for L&T in the future emerging private seaport projects.
SRa states that “executing the composite nature of workswhich included construction of 700m long jetty, township,13 Mtpa capacity bulk material handling system, 132kVswitch yard, 65 km of transmission line, 5 MLD capacitywater and effluent treatment system, 65 km railway lineand construction of embankment and bridges posed multiplechallenges. The remote location and poor infrastructurefacility meant that our team had to strive hard to createthis state-of-the art facility. Availability of land, transportation of materials, liaisoning with localadministrative authorities, environmental issues etc. weremajor issues for the team and relationship building waspivotal to face these challenges.”
Regarding the safety and quality, SRa asserts, “The two are
vital aspects for the successful completion of this project.”The project has recorded 27 million safe man hours andhas won the RoSPA gold award. In a career spanning acrossthree decades, SRa has handled various significant projectsin eastern India, Mr. Raja’s greatest strength lies in peoplemanagement and in building relationship with the localcommunity in order to ensure smooth completion of theproject. Despite facing several hurdles during construction,SRa ensured that the CSR face of L&T never compromised. The team was involved in developing the infrastructurefacilities at neighboring schools, building village roads, setting up water pumps and renovating bus stands etc. Also, an organisational welfare committee was formed bythe employees under the leadership of Mr. Raja to takecare of employee’s welfare.

From a graduate trainee in 1993 to heading the accounts
and administration at Dhamra port project, Mr. Kartik
Kumar Biswal (KKB) has come a long way. Exposures at
challenging project sites and continuous knowledge
enrichment (degrees in M.Com., LLB and AICWA) has
evolved KKB into a competent accounts and administration
personnel.
Posted at Dhamra since July 2007, KKB has a demanding
task at hand. He says, “We have formed a dedicated team
to take care of issues related to inter-operating companies
and inter-business units. The service departments such as
Plant and Machinery, Quality, and Safety are common for
all operating companies. Since it is a cost-plus contract,
collecting documents for billing and raising the invoice is
a critical activity which requires constant follow up.
Considering the volume and scope it is a great achievement
that we are completing the job in scheduled time.”
KKB’s administration skills were instrumental in resolving
many local issues and ensured good rapport with the
bureaucracy which facilitates the progress of work. KKB is
married to Biswajit who is a M. Phil and Post Graduate in
Botany and is working as lecturer. They are blessed with
two daughters. Elder daughter, Bandana is studying in class
II and the younger child is three months old. A socially
conscious person, KKB works towards the betterment of
the society in his own way.

Mr. K.S. Reddy (KSR), Project Head (Infrastructure),
says, “This deepest sea port is the first of its kind in India
with all the infrastructure facilities. The 700 Rmt
modernised Jetty at Dhamra with double berthing facility
is a special feature of this landmark project. The major
portion of this composite job was the infrastructure works
valued close to Rs 630 crores which comprised rail link
embankment, jetty and township works.”
KSR highlights that environmental factors in Orissa paved
the way for just seven working months in a year and
executing the 55 lakh cu.m. of earthwork in 18 working
months along with 46 km of ground improvement works,
6 major bridges and 151 culverts posed multiple challenges.
Seven Business Units across three Operating Companies
were involved in the execution of this project. KSR
emphasises, “Team work and coordination among the BUs
are key attributes for the success of this project. ECC-ites
coming from various regions across India proved that
ultimate delivery is important than individual performance
and this is the greatest achievement for this project.” The
project won the RoSPA Gold award for achieving 27 million
accident free hours.
Reddy enjoys reading management books and spending
time with his wife Madhavi and children Abhishek and
Anurag. Abhishek is doing his graduation in engineering
while his younger son Anurag is studying in class eight.

Mr. S.D. Patil (SDP), all along his career has been
associated with port projects. A Diploma cum Degree holder
in Civil Engineering, SDP began his career with Amma
Lines in Mumbai where he was involved in jetty and
dredging projects for close to 4 years. SDP joined ECC in
December 1994 at Gujarat Cement Plant’s Jetty works.
His subsequent assignments were Adani Port, Ashapura
Barge Berth at Mundra, Seabird Project at Karwar, Dhamra
Port Project, and Second Vivekananda Bridge, Kolkata.
SDP is currently posted at L&T’s upcoming port and ship
yard at Kattupalli near Chennai.
Talking of his role at Dhamra Port, SDP says, “jetty and
townships was my scope of works and executing it was a
major task. Remote access combined with tough weather
conditions meant slow progress of works. An innovative work
methodology was the need of the hour to streamline the
progress. Against the planned scope of 12 rigs we went for
22 rigs to speed up the works. Normally the jetty work
commences at the centre and will have two fronts. Here we
started working on 8 mini fronts and completed it on time.”
SDP proudly states, “In any marine project, barges form a
critical component during execution but at Dhamra we
never felt the need for one as the works were done on land
which is a major achievement.” With regard to the township
he says work started only after one and a half years due to
delay in land acquisition but got completed almost as per
contractual schedule.
SDP is married to Bharti, a homemaker and the couple is
blessed with two children. Eldest son, Saurabh is in class
VII and the younger son, Sanket is in class IV. An interesting
feature about his family is that their birthdays and wedding
day are always celebrated fondly as they all fall on national
holidays.

A veteran of over three decades, Mr. S.N. Somasundaram
(SNS), Manager, P&M, has served in a wide range of
projects. Prior to his joining ECC in 1994, SNS had long
and successful tenures with M/s Southern Structurals and
Ford India. Having been involved in a multitude of diverse
projects, SNS is seen as a specialist in P&M maintenance.
He has been handling critical machinery and is instrumental
for the hassle free operations of P&M at sites.
Posted at Dhamra since July 2007, SNS has quite a task at
hand. As the project does not have any permanent electricity
provision, all the establishments are operated through power
generators of various capacities at different locations. SNS
says, “Ensuring continuous and uninterrupted power was
a Herculean task which is being successfully achieved with
the backup of systematic preventive and periodic
maintenance.” Erecting machinery was another demanding
task as the project site had remote access and one had to
create approach ways to work locations for erection of
batching plants and other machinery.
SNS adds, “Though the distance between the operating
jobs was large, P&M took a centralised approach and catered
to the demands of the various packages.”
His wife Mythily is a homemaker and the couple has two
sons who are on the threshold of pursuing their professional
careers. Eldest son, Suresh Kumar is an electrical engineer
and the younger lad is doing his Bachelors in Electrical
and Communication. SNS asserts that “work is my greatest
passion in life and throughout my career I have been adding
value to everything I do in life.”

Some interests don’t change but become the
moving force in one’s life enabling aspirations
and creativity to flourish. For Mr. Sujoy Kumar
Das (SKD), it was such an early fascination for
machinery and technology which drew him to
equipment right from assembly, execution and
commissioning. A Mechanical Engineer
graduated (B.Tech.) from IIT Madras in 1988,
SKD had brief stints before joining ECC in
1995.
Some of the milestone projects handled by
SKD include Bokaro Steel Plant Modernisation, L&T Cement Plant at Durgapur, Blast Furnace “F” package at TISCO,
Hydrogen Generation Unit at BPCL Mahul, Coal Handling Plant at CSEB Korba. Among the various projects, his first
assignment was at Bokaro SAIL site and he cherishes his role and says, “I executed successfully all equipment pertaining
to the slab caster package and was there right from the beginning till the handing over of the project. As an individual,
I grew in self-belief and confidence.” Posted at Dhamra Port, as Construction Manager for Bulk Material Handling
(BMH), SKD has a pivotal role to play. Huge machinery and limited accessway meant that innovative ways and means
had to be planned for assembling and installing the equipment within a short duration. He says, “Adhering to the work
methodology made things easier and increased Safety, Quality and Productivity. We achieved 27 Million Safe Man Hours
and bagged the ROSPA Gold award.”
Hailing from a family of civil engineers, SKD is the only exception (mechanical engineer). Wife Subhra has ably
supported him in all his endeavours and they are blessed with two sons. The elder son, Suman is studying in class X
and the younger one Sumit is in class V. SKD’s interests are in reading technical articles and keeping himself updated
on technology and sharing it with colleagues.

Mr. Kuintal Pakhira is the Construction Manager for 124
TKM (65 RKM) Railway Construction works between
Bhadrakh and Dhamra. This involves supply, execution,
testing and commissioning of track linking, OHE work
between Bhadrakh station (E. Co. Rly.) and Dhamra Port
including TSS & SW. STN and Signaling & Telecom work
valued at Rs.290 crores.
Mr. Pakhira has been involved in this project since 2006
and has faced many challenges. Work front creation, resource
mobilisation and time constraints were some of the pressing
factors faced by every team member involved in Dhamra
Port project.
Despite the stringent working time that was available, the
adoption of modern technology like mechanised rail
threader, sleeper layer used in p-way work, mast erection
by hydra crane, rail cum road vehicle for wiring work etc,
paved way to the completion in a fast paced manner, he
said.
Having been in the organisation for the past 25 years, Mr.
Pakhira says, “L&T has become a part of my family and
life.” He enjoys Bengali classical music and spends quality
time with his wife Nila and their twin daughters Reemi
and Reshmi studying in class five.

One of the crucial factors for all around development of an
individual in an organisation is his exposure to various
facets of learning through practical experience. ECC offers
multitude opportunities for employees to enhance skills
and achieve more during their career. Mr. G.
Somasundaram (GSS), Construction Manager (WET
Package and Civil Works of Bulk Material Package) is one
such person who over the last two decades has handled
projects across business units. A native of Tirunelveli, GSS
is a diploma holder in civil engineering and has gained
cross domain expertise having worked in steel plants, power
projects, water treatment plants and residential buildings.
At Dhamra Port, GSS is entrusted with the responsibility
of executing the water system package valued close to
Rs. 46.55 crores. Having finished and commissioned the
package, GSS took the additional scope of doing civil works
for bulk material handling. He says, “The use of precast
technology for conveyor foundation system enabled us to
achieve the targets.” Among the other major milestones,
he highlights the 1750 precast piles done, sheet piling for
wagon tippler and coffer dam for water intake system.
GSS is married to Shanmugapriya, a post graduate and a
homemaker. The couple has two sons. The eldest son,
Gomathinayagam, is in class V while the younger son,
Shivachidambaram is in Class III. GSS’s hobbies include
reading novels and listening to music. Having traversed
widely across India, GSS and his family are proficient in
more than 4 regional languages.

Mr. Debasis Ghosh (DG), Construction
Manager (Transmission Line Package) has
donned complex and challenging roles in his 15
year career with ECC in various transmission
line and railway electrification projects. He says,
“I joined this company as a Diploma Engineer
Trainee in 1995 and from then it has been one
challenging assignment after another. From
geographically tough terrains to the volatile
locations, I have handled it all.”
Speaking on the peculiarities of transmission line projects, DG says, “The majority of transmission lines are done without
purchasing the land and convincing the inhabitants is always a major challenge. In Dhamra Port, the situation was much
more critical as the 65km double circuit transmission line starts at Bhadrak OPTCL sub-station and ends at sub-station
of DPCL at Dhamra. In which around 40km of line length is inside the corridor which has been purchased by DPCL
and rest is outside the corridor. Convincing the people and acquiring land was a great achievement and realised with
the help of DPCL authorities.” Highlighting the challenges, he says, “Normally in transmission line projects, piling is
done mostly in river crossings but in this project out of the 260 locations, 171 locations required piling because of the
bad soil condition. We made 1316 piles throughout the line by identifying the locations and moving from point to
another through micro level planning in shortest period.”
DG’s wife Debjani is a homemaker and they are blessed with a son Sabarna studying in class IV. DG is fond of
travelling, trekking, photography and loves to watch cricket.

Mr. P. Ramkumar is the Construction Manager for two
electrical jobs of E&I BU. One is a 132kV switchyard
valued at Rs. 2125 lakhs and second is a BMH electrical
package prized at Rs.6000 lakhs. Having handled over
twelve projects over the past two decades with L&T,
Ramkumar says he is always geared to handle any challenge
and well prepared for the tough project environments.
He says, “It has been a tough assignment for the team
which needs to commute for about five hours every day to
and fro to work. The roads are nothing but a small path
of gravel and sand with bumps over the entire stretch.”
L&T has developed this world-class port facility and the
surrounding infrastructure facility literally from nothing.
The site has taken a lot of initiatives towards creating a
turtle friendly environment which is one of the highlights
of this project.
All the outdoor light fittings are positioned and mounted
in a manner such that the point source of light or any
reflective surface of the lighting fixture is not visible
from any point on the beach at the same time all the
luminaries photometry selected for outdoor areas have
cut-off angle, less than 70 degrees.
Mr. Ramkumar’s small family consists of his wife Kalavathi,
who is a home maker and their little daughter Ilakkiya
who is three years of age.

Responsible for the overall planning of Dhamra Port Project
is Mr. Sutanu Ganguly (SGL), the Central Planning
Manager. In addition to his core responsibility, he is also
involved in overall planning of handling bulk materials
worth Rs. 413.8 crores along with quarry and crusher
operations producing close to 7.4 lakh tons of aggregates.
SGL had a vast experience in material handling system and
was associated with different streams of projects which
included power plants, steel plants and ports in different
parts of India. Involved in this project since January 2008,
SGL views Dhamra port as an extremely challenging and
exciting assignment. He says, “The most important aspect
has been the monitoring of the project activities with 7
BUs (3 OCs).” SGL cites that the transportation of
construction materials from Bhadrak to Dhamra was a major
concern due to the distance and the rugged terrain. Also,
the issues raised of the nesting and breeding of Olive Ridley
Turtles at Gahirmatha nesting area created some hurdles
during construction. Eco friendly initiatives were undertaken
and the project team installed turtle friendly lights using
sodium vapour instead of halogen and metal halide lights.
Sheds have also been provided over all the light masts to
protect the glow towards sky.
Moreover, the site at Dhamra is a cyclone prone area and
has faced a cyclone four times. A disaster management cell
was introduced for prevention measures.
The non-availability of skilled manpower has also been a
major concern for this project. SGL’s passion towards his
very own dialect Bengali and Bengali music, cricket, carom
and table-tennis keeps him occupied at those rare times
when he is away from work.
His wife Deepa is a home-maker and lends support to all
his endeavors and his children, Sutapa and Sudeep are
studying in class VII and class V respectively.
25
Mr. Sumendu Dutta (SD), Planning in-charge, Railway
Embankment (Bridges Metros and Ports) has had versatile
stints in various projects in the last 13 years since he joined
ECC. From tendering to planning to special thrust on via
ducts, road works and major bridges, SD has donned
challenging roles.
At Dhamra Port since June 2007, SD had a different kind
of issue at hand. He says, “The main challenges were land
acquisition of 61km of corridor and adverse climatic
conditions. In Orissa we get only 5 to 6 months working
period in a year. In the last 3 years we got only 15 to 17
months of working period due to the heavy monsoon.
Land acquisition got delayed due to local problems which
in turn affected the planning and mobilisation of special
resources. Continuous redirection planning was always on
the cards to stick to the project schedule. A very important
part of this project has been interaction and synchronisation
of works with all other OC/BUs (3 OC & 7 BU), as we
worked parallel in several fronts being dependent with each
other. Taking it all in stride we completed the job as per
schedule.”
The major scope of work comprised 55 lakh cu.m. of
earthwork for embankment, 6 major bridges and 151
culverts, approximately 72,000 cu.m. of concreting, 6400
MT of reinforcement & 1920 MT of steel super structure
fabrication and erection. SD highlights that “due to poor
soil conditions, ground improvement works were carried
out over a 46 km stretch. The superstructure (open web
girder) being a special type adhering to stringent railway
(RDSO) specification was fabricated at a specialised vendors
workshop at Kolkata and transported to site. A very good
launching system had been formulated for erecting the
girders without disturbing the ongoing traffic on NH#5
and other public roads.”
SD’s wife Paramita is a homemaker and lends support to
all his endeavours. SD is a music buff and an avid reader
and net surfer for learning about new concepts and
technology.

A diploma holder in Civil Engineering, Mr.
Debarshi Chatterjee (DC) joined ECC in 1995.
Backed by good exposures to major port projects
done by L&T, DC has established firm footings
in the field of port and harbours. Some of the
major projects handled by DC include Adani port,
Shell Hariza, Second Vivekananda Bridge and
Karaikal Port. DC says, “I was fortunate to have
the opportunity to work with new technology
which has given me the expertise in this field.”
DC was posted at Dhamra in 2007 as works
manager and now is the Construction Manager, in-charge for jetty and township packages. He says, “The initial days
were tough due to the remote locale of the project site and lack of supporting infrastructure. We gradually established
ourselves and combated the adverse situations on hand and completed the jetty which was the first major achievement.”
Highlighting the initiatives, DC says, “We could meet the target by adopting single pile gantry thereby reducing the pile
cycle time in the substructure.”
Mr. Debarshi’s family is based in Kolkata. His wife Rakhisree is employed. They have a son, Sahasrad who is in Class
IV. Reading books and listening to music are DC’s prime hobbies.

With an experience of close to 17 years in material handling
systems, Mr. Kamal Kanta Mohapatra (KKM), Manager
(Projects), has played a pivotal role in the integration of
bulk material handling works at Dhamra port.
Posted at this project since November 2006, KKM, being
the BMH Equipment Supply and Engineering coordinator
had major issues to resolve. Among the various critical
tasks, he highlights “shifting, erection and commissioning
of high speed (3.8 m/s) high Capacity (5500TPH)
conveyors, 25 tips/ hr wagon tippler, 4 nos of extra large
size Stacker Reclaimer (Boom length 35 m for iron ore
and 41 m for Coal) and rapid loading system was a major
concern due to the poor road condition. Most of the
equipment was transported at night with pilot vehicle and
experienced workmen.” Speaking on some of the special
initiatives employed in this project, KKM says “structural
fabrication was outsourced and instead of cast in situ, we
went for precast pile for 3 yard conveyors, each being 850
m long which considerably scaled down the execution time.”
All critical activities were taken forward after group
brainstorming sessions among the senior staff. Local
administrative issues were competently handled with the
help of site administrative staff.
KKM views the project execution as a unique experience as
apart from execution, the team had to negotiate harsh
climatic conditions, local issues and environmental concerns
in the process of creating this state-of-the-art deep water
port.
KKM is married to Jeetenmayee, a post graduate and
homemaker. They have a son, Goutam who is in class IV
and excels in drawing, dance and playing chess. KKM is
passionate about his profession and takes pride in his
domain expertise.

From an aspiring Defence Services candidate who nurtured
dreams of public service to the Quality Control in-charge
of Dhamra Port Project, life has been a challenging and
fulfilling experience for Mr. Ajan Kumar Naik (AKN).
Having cleared the written examination for police
recruitment, AKN wished to join the Services and realise
his goal. However things took a different turn with the
results being withheld and AKN engaged himself in his
family business. His dream of public service took a different
shape when he joined L&T on contract basis at the
Sambalpur-Rourkela road project in 1994. AKN says, “At
L&T I realised my goal by serving in projects which builds
the nation.” His good work at site was rewarded and he
successfully joined the organisation in 1997. At Dhamra
project since 2007, AKN has been playing a crucial role in
standardising QA/QC systems and procedures for the
numerous trials, design mixes etc. QA/QC’s role in
ascertaining the soil density for the embankment comprising
55 lakh cu.m. of soil is a major milestone. Similarly
concreting was a demanding task as the pour had to sustain
more than 5 hours of travel time due to the distance from
project site to next accessible point. A suitable mix was
designed to withstand the transit time and sustain the
concrete strength. 73000 cu.m. of concreting was done
and the major portion was for 172 bridges (163 minor
and 6 major bridges).
The project site bagged the in-house quality trophy in
2009 for achieving excellence in Quality and creating
awareness among staff and workmen through training
programmes.
AKN is married to Jyotirmayee, a homemaker who has done
her Bachelor in Information Technology (BIT) and is also a
B.Sc. graduate. She is interested in arts, music and dance.
They are blessed with a daughter Simran, 11 years old
studying in class V. AKN’s interests are in technology and
innovations and he nurtures an ambition to become a leader
in innovations and initiate new trends in QA/QC.

Store is the material hub of any project and the men holding
fort play a prominent role in catering to the diverse
requirements of the project site. More so when the project
has a composite work nature and multiple stores are set up
to handle the different sections. Mr. Ramakant Dubey,
overall Store Manager for the 7 BUs and 3 OCs, is one
such store keeper, always on the vigil, handling five stores
in different locations whose combined value is close to Rs.
1418 crores.
Mr. Dubey has his hands full in managing the inventory,
allocating materials and facilitating the composite
requirements. He states that “it is a port job but we have
the feel of working in a cross country project with multiple
stores spread within 80 km.” Speaking on the major issues
at site, he highlights the procurement of 20,000 t of
reinforcement steel, 65000 t of cement and handling close
to 10 lakh t of crusher aggregate.
Dealing with clients, consultants, customers, vendors,
subcontractors and liasoning with several statuary agencies
has been a great experience for Mr. Dubey. Ensuring smooth
inflow of materials is his primary function and in a remote
place like Dhamra where roads are narrow, logistic
management was a daily challenge. He says, “Planning and
coordinating the movement of heavy equipment was a
critical activity.” Handling the local people, government
authorities and also the unfriendly environment was a
demanding task for him and his team.
Reading religious books and watching television are his
other interests. Mr. Dubey’s wife Shanti is successful home-
maker with their elder son Ritesh in the Army as a Doctor
and married to Ruby who is employed as a technician in
a government hospital. Their younger son Rupesh is an
engineer employed in a software firm in Chennai.

zero accidents till date.
As a systematic worker, every evening, Dey engages all the
safety engineers, supervisors and safety stewards in a
meeting to discuss the next critical activity that is likely to
come up and accordingly assigns individual responsibilities.
The site achieved 27 Million safe man-hours for whole
project as on May 31, 2010.
He says, “I’ve learned a lot from the turtle issue that was
raised by the NGOs and how L&T handled it very efficiently
in an environment friendly manner. L&T showed the way
forward after discussing with IUCN (International Union
for Conservation of Nature) and initiated design, installation
of lighting systems with controlled flare that do not cause
any harm to turtles as well as environment.”
With a passion towards introducing more and more
innovative EHS practices, Mr. Dey owes his success to his
team. His family consists of his wife Mithu, who is a
postgraduate in History from Calcutta University and
Diploma holder in classical dance. She is a homemaker and a
big support for all his endeavours and their brilliant daughter
Rajlakshmi Dey is in class II and excels in academics.

Posed with a new challenge each day, Mr. Pitambar
Jena (PJ), Asst. Manager – Accounts and
Administration, handles the most crucial function of
resolving site administrative issues, operations of
crushers, managing the transportation of bulk
materials, handling of RTO documents and the
welfare of 215 staff members in addition to day to
day accounts related work.
PJ says, “Administration is not an easy task and
more so in a remote site like this. Mediating and
resolving local problems with villagers is my greatest challenge. The construction of the 65 km railway embankment
which passes through 64 villages under 3 Tahasils and 6 police stations was a major task enabled through effective
administrative initiatives.” Controlling public interference for uninterrupted work progress is PJ’s greatest achievement.
Transportation of heavy equipment and bulk material through the village road was also a great challenge, he added. This
was overcome with great planning and taking into confidence the local people and District Administration.
PJ is also responsible for the seamless co-ordination with all the BUs and ensuring the welfare of the staff who have
come from different places for this project.
Mr. Jena’s greatest interest lies in spending time with his family. His first son Satya Somesh is doing his B.E. and his
second son Sai Paramesh is studying in class XI. Seema, his wife is a perfect home-maker and a devotee of Sai Baba.

were many statutory requirements and process involved”. Hirmi Cement Plant is another job which he fondly reviews
and states that “it was a great achievement as I was there from the beginning to the end and successfully achieved the
closure.”
At Dhamra Port since January 2008, RRK as site accountant has to oversee accounts and administration for the three
operating companies involved in the execution. He says, “since it is a composite project, my scope includes looking after
entire accounts and MIS related matters of the operating companies and also the administrative issues.”
His wife Maheswari is a homemaker and the couple has two daughters. Elder daughter, Swathi is in Class VII and the
younger daughter, Kavipriya is in Class IV. Reading and watching TV are his prime hobbies. A keen kabadi player during
his school days, kabadi and cricket are RRK’s favourite games.

Mr. Guru Prasad Nayak (GPN), Project Leader,
Information Technology and his team have been
instrumental in procuring, installing and providing solutions
to the IT requirements at project site. Citing the unique
challenges on the job, GPN says, “In May 2007 when I
was posted at site it was a single business unit job. After
implementation of the verticals it has become eight business
units and converting the software to accommodate the other
business units in single platform was the biggest challenge.
Another issue was ensuring systems operation at 3 different
locations over a stretch of 90 km.”
Speaking on the achievements, GPN proudly says, “There
was no communication system at Dhamra. We installed

I Don’t Need to Worry
About Sodium
You don’t need to worry about the sodium in your diet unless you have a health conditionlike heart disease or high blood pressure – right? Wrong. Everyone loves their salt, and theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention recently issued a report saying that 2 out of 3of us need to seriously cut back our sodium intake.
It may not have calories, but sodium is not as innocent as many people think. Too muchsodium can increase the risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. This is causefor concern, as heart disease and stroke are the major killers of men and women each year.
It is estimated that the average person consumes 4,000 milligrams (mg) of sodium a day –far more than the maximum recommendation of 2,300 mg (the equivalent of one teaspoonof salt).
Reducing sodium is not easy. Our taste buds have grown accustomed to the salty taste ofmost foods and unlike for sugar, there are few convincing substitutes. Not only does sodiumflavour foods, it also acts as a preservative and as an inhibitor in leavening agents. Sodiumis found not only in salt but also in baking soda, baking powder and so on.
Still, if you’re one of the two out of three adults at risk for health problems from too muchsodium, it’s a wake-up call to lower the amount of sodium you consume. Here are sevensimple steps to cut the sodium in your diet:
Read nutrition labels on foods you purchase to see how much sodium they contain.
Ask for salt-free or low-salt preparation at restaurants.
Eat fresher, unprocessed foods, like fruits and vegetables, which are naturally low insodium.
Reduce the amount of sodium in canned foods by thoroughly draining and rinsingthem.
Go easy on high-sodium condiments like soy sauce, mustard, and ketchup.
Use herbs, citrus, and salt-free spices to season recipes.
Learn the lingo: Sodium-free or salt-free = less than 5mg/serving
– Very low sodium = 35 mg or less/serving
– Low sodium = 140 mg or less/serving
– Reduced or less-sodium = 50% less than regular version
– Unsalted or no added salt = no salt added to the product

We live in the era of ‘Knowledge Economy’ which is the key that nurtures a strongerworkforce. Fueled by this passion to build on existing knowledge and to share information,MMH&W Operating Company – HR had come up with a thematic initiative known as“Knowledge Sharing Session” (KSS) in the year 2009.
The objective behind introduction of KSS is that not all staff members get an opportunityto attend training programmes owing to various constraints. In this initiative the participantsare encouraged to share their knowledge with colleagues after any training programme.
HR facilitates the entire process giving a twinadvantage by increasing facilitators’ confidence andparticipants’ knowledge, thereby building a web ofinfluential knowledge workers. The facilitator’sefforts get systematically recorded in the HumanResource Management System (HRMS).
With this drive, more than 120 sessions have beenconducted so far successfully with a coverage ofover 1900 participants across the OC. The initiativeis now well institutionalised in MMH&W OC andcontributes significantly to the engine of “KnowledgeEconomy”.
