Season 2011/2012PHOTO: JASPER JUINEN / GETTY IMAGES

The two clubs who have jointly been champion of Europe on 16 occasions were drawn against each other in Group G and, at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, the AC Milan defensive wall is in disarray as Cristiano Ronaldo puts Real Madrid CF 1-0 up in the 13th minute with one of the season’s very few successfully-converted direct free-kicks. Within seconds, Mesut Özil made it 2-0 … and there were no further goals.

In the year 2000, UEFA introduced a Badge of Distinction in order to pay a visible tribute to clubs which have played a prominent role in continental competitions. A special emblem, which can be worn on players’ shirts, is awarded to any team which has won a UEFA clubcompetition three times in succession or at least five times in total. This feat has beenachieved in the Champion Clubs’ Cup but never in the UEFA Cup or the UEFA Super Cup. Thebadge features a number, indicating the number of times that the club has been champion of Europe.

It didn’t require much delving into the history books to confirm that Real Madrid CF earnedthe badge on two different counts. They are the ‘top scorers’ having been champions ofEurope nine times, including five successive titles between 1956 and 1960. Only four otherclubs are entitled to wear the UEFA Badge of Distinction. AC Milan changed the number ontheir badge from 6 to 7 by winning the final at the Olympic Stadium in Athens in May 2007. In terms of rivalry, it was an important victory. Liverpool FC had grabbed third place in theranking by beating AC Milan in the penalty shoot-out that decided the 2005 final in Istanbuland their fifth victory earned the right to add a Badge of Distinction to the English club’sfamous red shirt. Had the result gone the other way in Athens, they would have equalled AC Milan’s tally of six.

Two other clubs are entitled to wear the Badge of Distinction - and both feature the number4 on their sleeves. FC Bayern München earned the privilege by becoming champions of Europe in 1974, 1975 and 1976 before adding their fourth title in 2001. AFC Ajax also wontheir badge by recording a hat-trick in 1971, 1972 and 1973, before taking the Europeancrown for a fourth time in 1995.

The 2011 final at Wembley brought together two clubs who had been champions of Europeon three occasions and the 3-1 victory for FC Barcelona over Manchester United FC meansthat the Catalan club goes into the 2011/12 season with a double challenge - the first ofwhich is to earn a fifth title and gain access to the Badge of Distinction. If they achieve thatfirst objective, they will have automatically made history on a second count. Up till now, no team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League title, which means thatnobody has ever been on track to record three wins in as many years.
