PREFACE

Dear friends of Tara Trust,

Tara Trust has gone through a cycle of reinventing itself. We are attempting to move from

our traditional `Welfare' mode to the `Programme' mode where gender, continuity and

sustainability issues are addressed. However, the integrated intervention and rights

approach still continue. The change is more internal to Tara Trust. In the coming years we

expect to raise our level of professional competence and have a lager reach.

I am happy to share with you the Tara Trust Annual Report (2014 – 15) with a request to

support us with your thoughts, words and actions. Looking forward to a brighter future

and a better world.

Juhi Pandey

GOVERNANCE

Decentralisation a key for effective governance.

Tara firmly believes that good governance seeks to promote growth and social

justice. But the social security, rehabilitation and employment schemes of the

government are yet to change the lives of the poor. Despite decentralization and

amendment of the Panchayathi Raj (local governance) Act, power in real terms has

not been transferred to the lowest rung of the ladder of governance – the Gram

Sabha level. Therefore , Tara will continue to advocate for proper representation of

the marginalized, in the Panchayathi Raj system.

AN OVERVIEW

Tara Trust is a registered non-profit organization in Goa, India, with the mission to

empower, educate and enable the underprivileged, especially children and women, to

improve their lives. The Objective is to motivate children within the marginalized communities coming fromdifficult situations , economically febrile backgrounds, and those children orphaned or

abandoned, to not only stay in school but to gain an understanding and appreciation of

the importance of education. To develop a confidence within themselves to pursue a

higher education and a sense of self-determination, enabling them to aspire for a better

life.

Our Method of using creative engagement to encourage a child's personal growth is

driven by the belief that in following traditional forms of education alone we are

neglecting an integral part of one's self development. We conduct extensive art based and

creative workshops along with numerous intercultural programs and activities, which

supports the discovery of each child's own abilities enabling them to reach their full

potential.

Our Impact stems from the ability to form lasting relationships, which we continue to

develop on a weekly basis throughout their formative years. Allowing us to build upon the

strengths of each child while addressing their individual needs and limitations. By not

only teaching these children and presenting them with positive role models, but assisting

in their overall development through holistic learning, interactions with our volunteers

and exposure to trained specialists.

B. Women's Skill Development & Income Generation Programme

Tara Women's Programme Details .2014 - 2015

Vision

To empower and increase financial security of women through craft and design

skills.

Objective:

To form cohesive and skilled women groups able to generate an income for

themselves through exceptional craft skills.

The programme was started in July, 2014 . Tara started working with 25 women

from Zuari Nagar, a semi-urban area of Vasco. Our objective is to create spaces for

the women to learn and grow using their skills or by learning new skills which do

not hamper their social structure or routine, but enhance it by providing them the

opportunity to grow into independent individuals. One of their main concerns is

financial security and the Tara programme puts them on the path of financial

independence.

Though skill development is the main agenda Tara also address (whenever

requested) issues such as social injustice or domestic discord faced by the

beneficiaries of the programme. By January, 2015, the work had developed a range

of 7 unique paper craft products that were subsequently marketed at exhibitions

and retails sales raising Rs. 14,340/-.

The programme is not linked to any SHG or cooperative and is functioning

independently. Currently, the programme does not have a dedicated source of

funding and is supported through individual contributions of money and materials.
