It was a great honor and privilege to serve as the 2010-2011 President of the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. Words simply cannot express the value I have gained from my time in the League in terms of friendships, training, professional contacts, enhanced leadership skills, and the incredible opportunity to personally participate in meaningful service projects such as Kids in the Kitchen and to directly partner and volunteer with organizations such as ForKids, Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast, American Diabetes Association, Edmarc Hospice for Children, American Red Cross, FoodBank of Southeastern Virginia, and Excellence Girls’ Club.

The JLNVB is an organization with approximately 400 women dedicated to the mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the lives of women and children in South Hampton Roads through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. One of the great aspects of the League is the diverse group of volunteers - from mothers who work at home raising children to women who work in various profes-sions including engineers, artists, doctors, dentists, nurses, realtors, attorneys, financial professionals, scientists, sales and marketing professionals, and en-trepreneurs. Our commonality is our commitment to bettering the community in which we live by becoming trained civic leaders. There are many worth-while organizations where one can volunteer, but I truly can’t think of any that offer members as much as the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc.

I am so proud to be a part of this organization - of this dynamic group of women building better communities - and I want to thank my fellow League members, our generous sponsors, and our dedicated community partners for their time, energy, and enthusiastic support this League year.

President’s Message

The theme for the 2010-2011 League year was “From White Gloves To Work Gloves.” The women of the JLNVB are civic leaders who improve their communities through advocacy, community service, public education, fundraising, and sheer hard work. Part of our job as League members is to serve as ambassadors of the organization and promote all that we do in South Hampton Roads. The JLNVB can’t become a “Sybil Ludington.” Who is Sybil Ludington? She is reported to have traveled twice as far as Paul Revere to warn families of a British landing and to raise the militia during the American Revolution. And she was only 16 years old. So why isn’t her name in all of the history books? One can argue it’s because she didn’t have as strong a brand as Paul Revere. That’s why an education and branding campaign like “From White Gloves To Work Gloves” is so important. When we let our community partners, our sponsors, our potential members, our friends, our coworkers, and our families know what a significant impact in the community we make, we continue to stay recog-nized as volunteer leaders known for rolling up our sleeves, putting on our work gloves, and creating positive change!

JLNVB BudgetWith input from Committee Chairs and Council Vice Presidents, each Coun-cil’s budget has been reviewed and the following information reflects the cur-rent working budget for the 2011-2012 League year. This budget was ap-proved by the 2010-2011 Board of Directors on May 2, 2011, and provides flexibility for next year’s new fundraising strategy and plan as it is brought to fruition throughout the year. The 2011-2012 Board of Directors will issue an updated budget to the membership as the new plan is revised.

United Way CampaignThe JLNVB United Way Campaign for the 2010-2011 League year raised over $5,000 to create powerful, positive change in Hampton Roads. The Ways and Means Committee would like to thank Jessica Antel, Kim Blake, Stephanie Dickens, Ashley Gentry, Elsbeth Desselle, Connie Hedrick, Denise Kellam,

Leah Roberts, and Kimberly Thompson for their gen-erous support and commitment to the League. To support the JLNVB through the United Way Cam-paign, designate the JLNVB with EIN 54-6044966.

JLNVB CookbooksIt’s been a great year for the JLNVB cookbooks! Delicious recipes have been featured in all of the 2010-2011 TIDEings magazines for readers to enjoy and League members once again participated in the popular cookbook swap pro-gram with other Junior Leagues across the country. The League’s tasty crab recipes have also had press coverage in the Fall and Spring editions of House and Home Magazine and the JLNVB featured a cooking contest in Flourish Magazine in March 2011. Additionally, the Kids in the Kitchen Committee worked with the Cookbook Committee to sell the AJLI-published Junior Leagues in the Kitchen with Kids cookbook at our Healthy Kids Initiative events. Finally, a delicious salm-on dish from Toast to Tidewater held the spotlight on Fox43’s The Hampton Roads Show during a live cooking demonstration in early April! The JLNVB is proud of their two award-winning cookbooks, Tidewater on the Halfshell and Toast to Tidewater!

Payment Plan In the 2010-2011 League year, the JLNVB offered a convenient payment plan for members, which included all financial obligations such as their cookbook purchase, 2011-2012 dues, and Merrytime Market and Beach Ball 2011 tick-ets. Nearly 45 members chose to enroll in an automatic monthly deduction payment plan. This was the first year Finance Council offered this option, and members found it an easy way to meet their annual financial commitments!

Merrytime Market On Saturday, November 13, 2010, the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. hosted the seventh annu-al Merrytime Market at the Sandler Center in Virginia Beach. JLNVB welcomed returning businesses as well as a few new ones, bringing the total to 34 vendors at this year’s event and hundreds of guests. Vendors and guests, who were pleased with the central location, called the event “elegant,” “interesting,” “sophisticated,” and “fun.” Additionally, the kids enjoyed making cards for the troops and visiting with Santa! The event supported the mission of JLNVB and raised funds to further our charitable work within the Hampton Roads community.

Beach Ball 2011 Beach Ball is the League’s largest fundraiser and on Saturday, April 2, 2011, the JLNVB showed South Hampton Roads how to celebrate fundraising for a good cause in style at the Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront! The evening’s theme was “Sail into Summer” and included fantastic live and silent auctions, a fun photo booth, great music by The Rhondels, festive steel drums by Ju Ju Garlic, and an incredible Latin dance performance by The Mambo Room. WVEC 13News Anchor Vanessa Coria was the perfect emcee for the evening and her enthusiasm for the JLNVB and the enthusiasm of our Honoree, Rich-ard Harris, was contagious. Over 300 people attended and over $15,000 was raised in support of the JLNVB’s Signature Issue, Healthy Kids Initiative.

Community Partner and Beach Ball 2011 HonoreeThe Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. sincerely thanks our Beach Ball 2011 honoree Richard Harris for his amazing support for this year’s event. A native of Hampton Roads, Richard Harris received his bachelor’s degree from Old Dominion University and began his career as a teacher and coach. He has almost 40 years’ experience as a Certified Financial Planner in Virginia Beach, where he developed a practice focusing on wealth accumulation and conservation and business succession planning issues.

In June 2003, Richard passed the American College of Sports Medicine cer-tification exam to become a Certified Health and Fitness instructor. Richard’s most recent community involvement is with CINCH (Consortium for Infant and Child Health), in association with Eastern Virginia Medical School. He is an advocate for policy and legislative changes that benefit children and families, especially as they relate to physical activity and obesity prevention. Richard is also a valued member of the JLNVB’s Community Partner Network.

Richard also published three children’s books. Who Taught You About Money? discusses the basics of finance, If I Had A Penny... is for younger children learning to count from a penny to a dollar, and his most recent book, I’m Walking, I’m Running, I’m Jumping, I’m Hopping… is a fun book for kids focusing on increased physical activity and making healthy food choices. Community Council was busy this 2010-2011 League year continuing the im-portant work of the Healthy Kids Initiative, expanding the Kids in the Kitchen events, hosting an Educate and Appreciate event for our Community Partner Network, partnering with new organizations, and leading our Active member-ship to a vote for a new 3-year Signature Issue.

Strategic GoalTo identify needs in the community, and based on those needs, develop, implement and measure meaningful programs under the framework of our Signature Issue as well as complete Done-In-A-Day (DIAD) events to benefit children and women in South Hampton Roads.

Educate and Appreciate EventWe began the League year with an Educate and Appreciate event held for our Community Partner Network on August 11, 2010. At this event we were able to appreciate our partner organizations as well as present Community Council’s planned events for the 2010-2011 League year. The event was a great way for Junior League members to connect with members of our valued Community Partner Network. Special thanks go to Stacey Parker, Manager Community Outreach for Norfolk Southern Corporation, who provided at-tendees of the annual Educate and Appreciate event with a fantastic training on social media.

Healthy Kids Initiative The Healthy Kids Initiative was in motion again this year! Members partici-pated in a variety of events that taught children about making healthy nutri-tion and lifestyle choices, got children and adults moving through races, and helped reduce poverty in our community with food drives and activities for needy families.

We began the 2010-2011 League year assisting with WAVY-TV10’s Operation School Supply and Stuff the Bus. League members helped to collect

the supplies at the Stuff the Bus events as well as collect them from 12 South-side Wal-Mart locations for delivery to the WAVY-TV10 warehouse. Once the supplies were sorted, they were distributed to Hampton Roads school districts.

League members also made a strong showing for the 2010 United Way Day of Caring. This year we assisted Cross-roads Elementary School by organizing books, labeling materials in the library, and artfully displaying the school year mission on the front fence.

One of the most exciting new partnerships this year was with the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast. The League hosted the first JLNVB Girl Scout Patch program called It’s a Girl’s World for girls ages 5 - 17. As part of JLNVB’s Healthy Kids Initiative, the event focused on developing the potential of whole, healthy, confident girls in preparation for woman-hood. Activities stressed the importance of mak-ing good nutritional and fitness choices and hav-ing a healthy body image and strong self-esteem.

All scouts who participated received a patch custom designed by the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. There was a solid turnout in the Fall with almost 50 girls from a variety of troops attending, and we look forward to continuing our partnership for the 2011-2012 League year. In November 2010, League members brought in items from a list of the top ten most needed food items for South Hampton Roads families. All together, we collected over 750 pounds of food to support the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and their efforts to reduce hunger in the community. Also, with the Foodbank, 20 League members stuffed backpacks with nonperishable foods to provide meals to children who are hungry on the weekends and other non-school times. Members especially enjoyed this project as it was both physical and rewarding.

In January 2011, volunteers once again joined CHKD’s Healthy You program to mentor overweight children. Volunteers helped with their didactic training as well as joining them at the YMCA for weekly workouts.

On a windy weekend morning in mid-April, JLNVB members got up early to help with registration at the American Diabetes Association’s annual Tour de Cure. League members will also help with registration for the annual Girls on the Run 5K on June 4, 2011.

The JLNVB has continued its ongoing tradition of work-ing with ForKids this year. During the holidays, League members decorated a holiday gift shop for ForKids. The gift shop is used by families as a way of purchasing holi-day presents for family members. Several members also staffed the gift shop throughout the holidays. This spring JLNVB is throwing a Spring Playground Party to dedicate the brand new playground at ForKids Suffolk House. There will be healthy snacks, games, decorations, and fun goody bags with toys for children who are staying in Suffolk House.

Finally, we continued to stay involved with Excellence Girls’ Club. We provided members to speak about their careers at the Excellence Girls’ Club career fair and JLNVB President Kimberly Thompson served as emcee at their 10-year anni-versary celebration!

Samaritan House ProjectIn December 2010, Ann Ostrander, Community Relations Specialist at BJ’s Wholesale Club, and JLNVB members Maryann McChesney-Shaw and Me-lissa Foglia prepared 30 welcome bags for residents of the Samaritan House. The festive welcome bags contained personal care items that were donated by BJ’s Wholesale Club, such as sham-poo and conditioner, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, razors and shaving cream, hand sanitizer, Q-Tips, and lotion. JL-NVB Community Vice President Brenda Christy then presented the bags to the Samaritan House with Ms. Ostrander. The Samaritan House is a shelter lo-cated in Virginia Beach that serves lo-cal homeless families as well as women and children whose lives are disrupted by domestic abuse.

Kids in the KitchenIn October 2010, the JLNVB began a new Kids in the Kitch-en initiative. The League brought mobile Kids in the Kitchen (KIK) events to several Boys and Girls Clubs across South Hampton Roads. These mobile KIK events included three stations: a snack; a game; and an athletic activity.

Children were able to learn about the different food groups by answering trivia questions. For each correct answer they earned a beanbag to throw into the food pyramid beanbag toss! After the game, they moved on to the athletic activity - the Shuttle Run! The purpose of the shuttle run is to test speed and agility, which is important in many sports. This test requires the person to run back and forth between two parallel lines as fast as possible.

Following all of this “strenuous” mental and physical activity, the children were able to make a healthy snack to eat or take home. Each child made a trail mix consisting of pretzels, rice cereal, chocolate chips (just a few!) and raisins.

The children and staff at each Club had so much fun with the JLNVB, and League members always left to voices asking when we would return. Almost 400 children were impacted by the mobile Kids in the Kitchen programs.

Signature Issue VoteThe 2010-2011 League year marked the third year of our 3-year commitment with Healthy Kids Initiative as our Signature Issue. As such, it was time for us to vote to ei-ther continue Healthy Kids Initiative for another 3-year term or adopt a new issue. The needs of the Hampton Roads Community were evaluated and the Active membership narrowed the community’s largest needs (Poverty, Education and Literacy, Senior Care and our current Signature Issue) to a vote between Education and Literacy and Healthy Kids Initiative. Possible partnerships were presented for each of these issues. The Active membership voted in February 2011 on the upcoming Signature Issue focus, and we are proud to have selected to continue Healthy Kids Initiative for a second 3-year term!

The annual Spring JLNVB’s Kids in the Kitchen event was held on Saturday, March 19, 2011, at the Green-brier YMCA in Chesapeake. Over 100 children were in attendance. Children were able to learn how they need to incorporate the basic five food groups into their diet in a fun and informative way! Fruit, veg-etable, grain, protein and dairy food stations included multiple treats for them to sample.

After the sampling all the food groups, children could decorate their own personal chef hat and learn how to prepare a healthy plate. The Chesapeake Police attended to educate our young participants and their parents on safe outdoor exercise. The American Diabetes Asso-ciation, the YMCA, Chesapeake Public Schools, local nutritionist Jim White, CHKD and the Young Chef’s Academy were also present to educate families on the importance of leading

a healthy lifestyle. Just before 1:00 p.m., many children gathered with their parents in the gym in anticipation of winning one of many raffle prizes like bicycles, a scooter, a basketball hoop set or many other fun gifts.

The JLNVB’s Kids in the Kitchen event was a tre-mendous success and many people are looking forward to next year’s event!

Community Impact AwardThe Community Impact Award is given annually to any League member (excluding Board members) who demonstrates excellence in promoting our mission within our community. The nominee has gone above and beyond the call of duty with voluntarism in the commu-nity and has distinguished herself from her peers by her level of enthusiasm and commit-ment to our Signature Issue, Healthy Kids Initiative.

Betsy GloverBetsy Glover has undoubtedly furthered our mission in the community through her unwavering leadership of the 2010 Fall and 2011 Spring Kids in the Kitchen events. As Chair of the KIK Committee, Betsy was organized, dil-igent in her follow-up, and offered superb customer service to the League’s Community Partner Network. Betsy has continued to lay the groundwork for expanding the Kids in the Kitchen program and is truly deserving of the JLNVB’s Community Impact Award.

Strategic GoalTo foster a positive environment to recruit and retain members as well as train them to become lifelong leaders and make valuable contributions in the com-munity.

2010-2011 Membership ForumEach year the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. strives to ensure that avenues of communication are open for all members at the Committee, Council, and Board levels. It is paramount that our membership has acces-sible and appropriate avenues to express concerns, suggestions, and compli-ments about their League and their membership experience.

The Leadership of JLNVB works diligently to respond to feedback received each year and incorporate members’ recommendations into the daily oper-ations, programs, and processes of the JLNVB in an effort to enhance and develop the overall League experience. This year the Membership Council conducted a Membership Forum at the March 2011 General Membership Meeting. Najwa Knox, JLNVB’s At-Large Director, mediated questions with attendees regarding preferences for volunteer time and opportunities, training and event options, and ways to improve overall member satisfaction.

The discussions were energizing, objective, and thorough, and generated nu-merous innovative ideas. A summary of the Forum results is listed below.

The Membership Council and the Board of Directors is truly responding to our membership as we embark on a new Strategic Plan for 2011-2014. Ideas generated during the Forum are now being incorporated into plans for the upcoming League year and into our 3-year Strategic Plan. We have also been able to take immediate action on recommendations from members by offer-ing the April 2011 General Membership Meeting at a new location in Chesa-peake, incorporating a social activity into the evening, and offering a training immediately before the meeting at the same location.

As we move into the 2011-2012 League year, it is important that we stay con-nected to the overall mission of the JLNVB, and that the decisions and actions we take reflect the desires and interests of our members. The strength of our communication is key to our continued success as an organization, and we look forward to hearing more of your feedback.

New SustainersSustainers are the foundation of the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. They sup-port the League financially and through participation in many of the activities. Sustaining members provide invaluable insight by serving as Advisors to Councils and Committees and continually providing guidance based on their past experiences. Sustainers provide a sense of continuity and growth to the JLNVB, and a number of Sustainers have gone on to play integral roles in many charitable endeavors in our community.

Over the years, many have credited the JLNVB for providing an unparalleled training ground for exemplary leaders, and our Sustainers perpetuate the tradition of hard work and excel-lent results in all organizations in which they serve.

Two JLNVB members, Kelly McMahon Willette and Kimberly C. Thompson, will sustain after the 2010-2011 League year. Congratulations to Kelly and Kimberly, our newest JLNVB Sustainers!

Kelly McMahon WilletteKelly McMahon Willette joined the League in 2002 and has served on several different Committees. Her work in the JL-NVB has ranged from Mardi Gras Co-Chair in 2004, to serving in several behind-the-scenes roles designing JLNVB graphics and publications. It is due solely to her League training that Kelly has built a successful business, Willette Designs. From

her knowledge gained through League trainings and positions, Kelly learned how to run a small business on her own and to grow the business to fit her customers’ needs. Most recently, Kelly served as a Placement Advisor and spoke at the January 2011 Passion into Action luncheon on small business ownership.

Kimberly C. ThompsonKimberly C. Thompson joined the League in 2002 and has en-joyed her time working on the Communications Council edit-ing/managing TIDEings and serving as Communications Vice President, on Membership Council as a Provisional Advisor, Training Committee member, and as Membership Vice Presi-dent, on Finance Council as the TIDEings Business Manager

and Grantsmanship Chair, and on the Administrative Council as Administra-tive Vice President. She was honored to be selected as President-Elect of the JLNVB in 2009-2010, and has thoroughly appreciated all that her 2010-2011 League year has offered as President of this great organization. She has so many incredible memories as a Provisional and Active member, and is look-ing forward to creating more as a new Sustainer!

Sustainer of the YearThe Sustainer of the Year award is given annually to any League Sustainer who has gone above and beyond the call of duty as a Sustainer and has dis-tinguished herself by her level of enthusiasm and commitment to the JLNVB.

Deborah RussellJLNVB Past President Debbie Russell coordinated the three successful Passion into Action luncheons with Sustainer Com-mittee Co-Chair Shelly Gram, supported Beach Ball 2011’s sponsorship and marketing efforts, and shared the idea for the successful Thank-A-Thon that was held in late 2010. We are grateful for Debbie’s continued commitment to the JLNVB!

Past Presidents LuncheonThe Past Presidents Luncheon, a JLNVB annual tradition, was held on Thurs-day, March 10, 2011, at Town Point Club in Norfolk. The luncheon, hosted by 2010-2011 President Kimberly Thompson, is a time for the current Board of Directors to meet the past leaders of the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. The former Presidents shared their insights from their time “in office” and offered advice for League members going forward. In turn, the 2010-2011 Board of Directors shared the key accomplishments of this Leagueyear.

October 2010 Cluster MeetingsThe October General Membership Meeting was replaced with five Clus-ter Meetings located throughout South Hampton Roads. Cluster Meetings are smaller, more intimate meetings and allow members to interact with others and meet new members. The Cluster Meetings were hosted by five fabu-lous Sustainers: Heather Wood, Amy Driscoll, Cinda Ayers, Lynne Winter and Kirkland Kelley. During the meetings, League members discussed the Nominating process and leadership opportu-nities within the League.

2011 Organizational Development InstituteThe Nominating Committee selected four partici-pants to attend a key Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) training called ODI, held on March 11-13, 2011, in Tampa, FL. Shon Johnson, Ellie Desselle, Aisha Evans, and Jamie Stump rep-resented the JLNVB this year. Organizational De-velopment Institutes, a series of mission-based education meetings, are a critical component of the League’s training program. These training ses-sions are geared toward building the knowledge of League members who manage the League’s key functions.

At ODIs, delegates build organizational capacity by learning about:• Innovative approaches to developing Junior League members as effective

volunteer leaders in their communities.• Powerful ways to design community programs and partnerships that have

significant impact.• Strategies for sustainable and diversified fund development.• Keys to building strong internal operational controls.• Developing an effective nominating process to strengthen the League’s

leadership base.

2011 Lead Star Leadership Boot CampIn May 2011, four League members were selected to attend Lead Star’s Leadership Boot Camp in Northern Virginia: Kim Walker, Nancy Wilkinson, Stacy Long, and Julie Stroh. This day-long comprehensive and interactive training experi-ence was specifically for women looking to expand their leadership abilities. Participants learned proven leadership fundamentals directly from best-sell-ing authors, Lead Star’s founders, and leadership coaches Angie Morgan and Courtney Lynch. This workshop provided an in-depth analysis of the qualities leaders possess and participants developed a personalized action plan to con-tinue their leadership momentum in the League.

2nd Annual Halloween PartyThe Membership Council hosted the second annual Halloween Party at the Taylor-Whittle House on Oc-tober 24, 2010. A “spook-tacular haunted house” was created in the League headquarters basement and Halloween-themed games and activities, such as pumpkin decorating, pumpkin ring toss, and pumpkin putting were set up in the garden. Potts ‘N Paints was onsite so that children could create pottery master-pieces for gifts and keepsakes. More than seventy-five JLNVB families and Freemason neighbors attended this tremendously successful social event.

Thank-A-ThonThe Membership Council coordinated and implemented the JLNVB’s first ever Thank-A-Thon this League year. The Thank-A-Thon was an effort to reach out to sponsors, donors, volunteers, community partners, and members to thank them for their continued support of the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. People were surprised, pleased, and appreciative when they re-ceived a call simply to say thank you. We appreciate all that they do for our League to help it remain a viable, strong, and impactful organization in the Hampton Roads Community.

2010-2011 Provisional RecruitingWe had a busy season during the Summer of 2010 recruiting potential mem-bers for the JLNVB 2010-2011 Provisional Class. We held New Member In-formation Socials at Burton’s Grill in Virginia Beach, the Taylor-Whittle House, Gordon Biersch Restaurant in Virginia Beach, and at the beautiful oceanfront home of Sustainer Priscilla Trind-er-Roady. We had a number of dynamic women who decided to put on their “work gloves” and join the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc!

2011-2012 Provisional RecruitingFor the 2011-2012 League year, the JLNVB Provisional Recruiting team is implementing a strategy of proactive recruiting. Parliamentarian Angela Jones and President Kimberly Thompson represented the JLNVB at a booth at the Old Dominion University Public Service Career Explorium in November 2010. JLNVB membership information has been available at a number of League events throughout the year, including Merrytime Market, Beach Ball 2011, and the Nordstrom’s social event. Jamie Stump and Aisha Evans represented the JLNVB at a booth at the National Mom’s Nite Out at Chesapeake Square Mall on May 5, 2011. Upcoming events include the Wine, Cheese & Choco-late Membership and Recruiting Social at the Taylor-Whittle House on Sun-day, May 22, 2011, a New Member Information Social at the Taylor-Whittle House on June 1, 2011, a Lilly Pulitzer private JLNVB shopping event at the Virginia Beach Ocean Palm store in July, as well as additional events in August before the start of the Provisional year on September 1, 2011.

2010-2011 Provisional ClassThe 2010-2011 Provisional Class had a big year! They began with a Retreat at TowneBank in Norfolk followed by a social at Kincaid’s at MacArthur Center. Throughout the year, the Provisionals coordinated a Christmas party for the families of the Ronald McDonald House, planned and implemented a suc-cessful Blood Drive for the American Red Cross, and coordinated activities for the Kids in the Kitchen event. These women have developed friendships they will have for a lifetime and fostered a special bond through their shared commitment to the community and to the League. Provisional of the YearThe Provisional of the Year award is given annually to any League Provisional who consistently embodies the true spirit of voluntarism and has gone above and beyond the call of duty as a Provisional.

Hope KeysEveryone who sees Hope Keys has the same first impression of her – she’s always smiling. She is quick to volunteer for any job, follows through on what she has committed to do, always gives her best in all that she does, and supports all League events. She is energized and passionate about the League and consistent in her support of all our organization does to help

the community. Hope is a quiet force who possesses enthusiasm, commit-ment, and the willingness to serve that embodies the JLNVB spirit. She is a tremendous asset to our League, and we know Hope will be a great leader for us in the future.

Transition CommitteeThe Transition Committee was brand new for the 2010-2011 League year. The Committee served members who were in a “Transition” year with their League membership. These members include Transfers, first year Actives, and members returning to Active membership from a Leave of Absence, Non-Resident Active, or Resigned status. The goal was to work to improve both member satisfaction and retention among the Transition group by welcoming and guiding them through their Transition year. A curriculum was developed for the year addressing specific JLNVB processes, including a discussion of membership commitments, Bylaws, Policies and Procedures, and the place-ment process. The Transition Committee hosted three socials and information sessions throughout the year to offer Transition members a chance to get to know one another at smaller scale social events and to allow them an oppor-tunity to ask questions and to discuss a curriculum topic. We have received positive feedback about the Transition program and are pleased that retention numbers among this group have improved.

Fall Leadership FairThe Placement Committee hosted the first Leadership Fair during Merry Min-utes at the November 2010 General Membership Meeting. This event gave members an opportunity to learn more about leadership roles available in the JLNVB. Current Board of Directors and Council members were available to talk with members and share their experiences in Chair and Board positions. Members were able to learn more about the responsibilities and rewards of JLNVB leadership positions and to have their questions about those roles an-swered.

Spring Placement Fair“Passport to Placement” was the theme of this year’s Spring Placement Fair, held during the Merry Minutes portion of the February 2011 General Member-ship meeting. Each Council selected a country for their theme and decorated and had food and drinks related to their selected country. Members moved around to each Council and had their passports “stamped” after talking with Council members about the various Committee positions available. When the passports were complete, they were entered in a raffle prize drawing. Be-sides being a fun social component of the GMM, the placement fair is a great way for members to learn more about every Council, so that they can decide where their JLNVB career interests lie.

Leadership InitiativesIn 2008, JLNVB won the coveted AJLI/Anheus-er-Busch Award for our work on the Passion into Action luncheons and the development of the Leadership Institute. In the 2010-2011 League year, three Passion Into Action lun-cheons were held. The Sustainer Committee, chaired by Past Presidents Debbie Russell and Shelly Gram, hosted the luncheons at Town Point Club in Norfolk. The Octo-ber 2010 guest speaker was Past President of the Junior League of Miami, Jane Short, with “Confessions of a Volunteeraholic.” In January 2011, the League offered a well-received panel discussion for the PIA luncheon. The panel, consisting of Casey Moore, Kelly Willette, Brooks Lively, and Jessica Gilden, reviewed how members transported the skills and training from their time in the League into their own Passion Into Action by starting their own businesses. The last luncheon was held in April 2011, with JLNVB Sustainer Laurie Har-rison, who discussed how the Junior League helped train her for her current position as Development Director for Physicians For Peace.

Eight JLNVB Leadership Institute trainings were offered to members during the 2010-2011 League year. In September, the focus was on leadership with a presentation en-titled “Leading from the Front for Success.” In October, guest speaker Linda Simon discussed “Networking in Today’s World.” November focused on communications with Kimberly Thompson offering train-ing entitled, “Brand Yourself As A Leader.” Finally, Toastmasters held an informative public speaking training in January, follow-ing the General Membership Meeting. These four trainings rounded out the leadership and communications component of the 2010-2011 Institute. For the remainder of the year, the Leadership Institute trainings focused on the non-profit sector, self-defense, and citizenship. In February, guest speaker Judi Luffman, Director of The Southeast Virginia Community Foundation, dis-cussed the difference between public and private foundations. In March, Virginia State Police Senior Trooper, Ross Thompson, held an informative self-defense class at the Mt. Trashmore YMCA in Virginia Beach. Finally, the 2010-2011 Leadership Institute was concluded with guest speaker Chesapeake City Council Member, S.Z. “Debbie” Ritter.

League Light AwardThe League Light Award is given annually to any League member (excluding Board members) who consistently embodies the true spirit of voluntarism. The nominee has gone above and beyond the call of duty in her placement and has distinguished herself from her peers by her level of enthusiasm and com-mitment to volunteering.

Erinn LearyErinn Leary is this year’s League Light Award recipient because of her continued commitment to the League and the enthu-siasm and dedication with which she approaches everything she does in the JLNVB. During her Provisional year, Erinn was recognized as Provisional of the Year. At that time, it was not-ed, that “Erinn could be counted on to go above and beyond

regardless of her personal circumstances. She is incredibly modest and does not seek attention; she demonstrates excellent leadership and dependability.” Erinn still has all of these qualities, as well as incredible compassion. She is committed to the League and its mission to serve the community and goes above and beyond in working to support the League. This year, as Provisional Chair, Erinn worked diligently to make our Provisionals’ first year with the JLNVB a great experience. She truly cares about the members of her class and led her team in shaping a dynamic group of future leaders. Erinn’s spirit of dedication and volunteerism make her a true light in our League.

Board Member of the YearThe Board Member of the Year award is a new award to be given annually to any League Board member who continually embodies the true spirit of volun-tarism and leadership.

Laura BangorEveryone in the JLNVB knows 2010-2011 Membership Vice President Laura Bangor! Through Laura’s leadership, the Tran-sition Committee was launched, we were able to host our first Thank-A-Thon and Halloween Party, informative TIDEings arti-cles were written for members, and our JLNVB Facebook page stayed up-to-date. Laura is extremely knowledgeable about

the League’s history and without her help, the Taylor-Whittle House wouldn’t have been decorated as grandly as it was during the annual Home for the Holidays tour. Laura goes above and beyond when given a task and she de-serves this award because she is truly passionate about her role as a member!

Active Member Advisor/Mentor of the YearThe Active Member Advisor/Mentor of the Year award is a new award for the 2010-2011 League year and it will be given annually to any League Advisor or Mentor of Active members who consistently embodies the true spirit of mentorship and guidance to her colleagues.

Aisha EvansAisha Evans approaches all that she does with a smile on her face and a bounce in her step. In addition to shaping a new Committee for the League as Transition Chair, she served as an outstanding Mentor for Transfer members and first-year Ac-tives. As a former Transfer, Aisha has first-hand understand-ing of how important it is for members to feel welcomed and

accepted in the League, and she always makes a point of seeking out and welcoming her Mentees and members of the Transition group. She has led by example and encouraged her Mentors to host socials with their Mentees and keep them engaged during the League year to think outside the box and try new things. Aisha has tremendous enthusiasm and sees challenges and obsta-cles as learning opportunities. She is always looking for new and innovative ideas to increase member satisfaction and keep members engaged. She has been an outstanding Mentor and shining example for all League members.

Provisional Mentor of the YearThe Provisional Mentor of the Year award is a new award for the 2010-2011 League year and it will be given annually to a Provisional Mentor who consis-tently embodies the true spirit of mentorship and guidance to the Provisionals.

Susie WentworthSusie Wentworth is an enthusiastic cheerleader for the League. Her commitment to service and belief in the JLNVB mission is infectious and she shares that with her Mentees and the entire Provisional class. Susie has led by example and gone above the call of duty to secure multiple donations for the Provision-al Blood Drive. Her Mentees have said, “Susie has gone above

and beyond what I expected or needed from an Advisor.” She has not only provided her Mentees with the information they need to navigate and succeed in the League, but gets them excited about being members of the JLNVB. The Provisional class and has been fortunate to have such an inspirational and enthusiastic role model as one of their Mentors.

Outstanding Chair Achievement AwardThe Outstanding Chair Achievement Award is given annually by the Board of Directors to any League Chair or Chair-Elect who has accomplished notable achievements with their Committee and/or Council during the League year.

Emily BudlongEmily Budlong stepped up to the Signature Issue Chair posi-tion early this League year and did a fabulous job in all as-pects of that role. Her particularly outstanding achievement for the year was the organization and implementation of the first ever JLNVB Girl Scout badge program, It’s a Girl’s World. It’s a Girl’s World has received countless favorable reviews and

the program will continue to enhance the lives of many Girl Scouts in South Hampton Roads.

Outstanding Committee Member Achievement AwardThe Outstanding Committee Member Achievement Award (excluding Chairs) is given annually by the Board of Directors to any League Committee member who has accomplished notable achievements and gone above and beyond the call of duty with their Committee during the League year.

Katie RiderKatie Rider wore a lot of hats during the 2010-2011 League year and the JLNVB is grateful for the many hours she put in developing the superb graphics that were used on initiatives throughout the year. In particular, Katie stepped up and de-signed all the Beach Ball 2011 handouts, tickets, logo, and the

event program booklet. Katie, thank you for your continued commitment to the League and for taking on additional responsibilities when the need arises!

Anne BibeeAnne Bibee, like all Provisional members, served on the Beach Ball 2011 Committee this year. In her role on that Committee, Anne sought out and secured over thirty donations for the si-lent auction from Etsy artists! Her efforts contributed greatly to the incredible success of Beach Ball 2011. Anne exemplifies what every member strives to do in supporting the JLNVB’s

ability to impact our community.

Outstanding Board Member Achievement AwardThe Outstanding Board Member Achievement Award is a new award to be given annually by the Board of Directors to a fellow Board member who has accomplished notable achievements with their Council during the League year. The nominee has gone above and beyond the call of duty as a Board Member and has distinguished herself by her level of enthusiasm and com-mitment to the JLNVB.

Shannon WrightShannon Wright has done an amazing job as Communications Vice President this League year. She has secured an unprec-edented amount of coverage for the JLNVB and our events. Shannon also spearheaded the launch of the “From White Gloves To Work Gloves” education campaign as well as led the Committee that produced the beautiful new TIDEings

Magazine! Through her efforts, Shannon has exponentially increased the vis-ibility of the League in the Hampton Roads community.

President’s Award for Outstanding Board MemberMaryann McChesney-ShawTreasurer-Elect, Maryann McChesney-Shaw, is a Certified Public Accountant who used her impressive financial skills to assist the Junior League count-less times throughout this League year. The League is most grateful for her monthly detailed QuickBooks review, her streamlining of the League financial reporting process, her preparation of the 2011-2012 Budget, and her advice, assistance, and training during the JLNVB Office Manager transition.

President’s Award for Outstanding Committee LeadershipCarin Schneller-CarrCarin stepped up this year and did a fantastic job with Beach Ball 2011. She worked through the Office Manager transition and with the Beach Ball Chair to deliver an impressive event that provided outstanding public relations and visibility for the League and invited new people into understanding the JLN-VB’s mission. She managed contracts, negotiated with vendors, and dedicated countless hours to ensuring the success of the event.

President’s Award for Outstanding ProvisionalFaith DominickOne word consistently comes up to describe Faith Dominick when you talk to members of her class and the Active members of the League. That word is Leader. Faith was instrumental in organizing and executing the success-ful Blood Drive, an extremely time consuming and difficult task. Faith never shrank from the challenges, led by example, maintained a positive attitude, and encouraged all those working with her. Her enthusiasm, commitment, and diligence represent the best qualities in a League member, and she will have much success in her League career.

Strategic GoalTo provide effective administrative support for JLNVB activities and manage all aspects of the headquarters’ location.

2010 United Way Day of Caring – Taylor-Whittle HouseOn Friday, September 10, at 8:00 a.m., the Ju-nior League welcomed Hampton Roads Sani-tation District (HRSD) volunteers for the United Way Day of Car-ing at the Taylor-Whittle House. These 22 volunteers were eager to give of their time and they painted the outside patio, first floor small dining room and third floor stor-age rooms. The volunteers also installed motion-detecting flood lights, removed heavy outdated equipment from the third floor, and cleaned and organized the kitchen and second and third floor storage rooms. Their efforts are greatly appreciated and they have significantly improved the utility of the Taylor-Whittle House. Thanks to the HRSD team for a job well done!

Home for the Holidays TourIn early December, Junior League members came together to deck the halls of the organi-zation’s headquarters, the Taylor-Whittle house. The house was decorated with fresh greens and berries, silver spoons and oyster shells represent-ing era-appropriate decorations for the historic home. As visitors strolled through, they were greeted by docents, holiday music, and treats from the League’s award-winning cookbooks. The Home for the Holidays Tour is an annual event sponsored by The Chrysler Museum of Art. Visitors were invited to stroll between eight

historic sites in the Downtown and West Freemason districts and peer into Norfolk’s colorful past. In addition to the Taylor-Whittle House, the tour in-cluded the Moses Myers House, Freemason Street Baptist Church, Norfolk

History Museum (Willoughby-Baylor House), Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, MacArthur Memorial, Hunter House Victorian Museum, and Epworth Meth-odist Church.

Christmas Tree Decorating and Holiday SocialAfter participating in the Home for the Holidays Tour, JLNVB members celebrated the season with the League’s first ever Christmas Tree Decorating and Hol-iday Social. The mood on December 15, 2010 was festive with jolly music, warm beverages, and holiday sweets, and each member trimmed the tree with an ornament that was representative of the JLNVB. It was magical to look up at the Taylor-Whittle House from Freemason Street and see the lit Christmas tree shining merrily through the parlor window.

Nancy S. HuddlestonNancy S. Huddleston has assisted her Retired U.S. Navy Master Chief Boatswain’s Mate husband, Charles Stenger, for 12 years as Sec-retary/Treasurer of Samurai Painting, a small contracting company in Norfolk, VA, that helps homeowners by painting and repairing spaces. Prior to being a business partner, she worked as Senior Production Specialist for Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation laying out and editing grant proposals and peer-reviewed journal articles in the Wash-ington, DC area, and as Executive Assistant for the Millard Fillmore Health, Education and Research Foundation for Millard Fillmore Hospitals in Buffalo, NY.

Nancy attended high school at The Buffalo Seminary and continued her ed-ucation at Barnard College. She is therefore familiar with women’s institu-tions. She has completed leadership training in communication, enrollment and self-expression through Landmark Education. Nancy has a B.A. in Me-dia Study from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She has trav-eled extensively and has a lifelong interest in educa-tion. She studied fine art and design and decorative painting in New York City and Norfolk. She is also a homemaker and a mother. In May, her beautiful twin boys, Maxwell and Jack-son Stenger, will be five years old.

Strategic GoalTo improve and enhance internal communication, to develop and implement tools as well as strategies for external communication, and to raise the profile of the League in the community.

Communications Council was excited to introduce several new initiatives this year! First, thank you to 3 Leos Public Relations LLC and the work of the TI-DEings Committee for the brand new look and feel of the League’s monthly newsletter. It has received tremendous positive feedback from readers and advertisers alike. The information is fun to peruse and the format is beautiful! Additionally, the Communications Council was pleased to mail out to League members and partners the first full-color Winter print edition of TIDEings! Thank you also to all of our advertisers this year for placing ads in our TIDE-ings Magazine!

The League also worked hard to partner with organizations to increase awareness of our mission within the community. A great example is the successful partner-ship with the YWCA for the October 2010 “Community Conversation” with author Leslie Morgan Steiner during National Do-mestic Violence Month.

Additionally, Communications Council launched the JLNVB Facebook and Twitter pages and hosted social media training for the Community Partner Network at the Summer 2010 Educate and Appreciate event.

Communications Council also unveiled the “From White Gloves To Work Gloves” education and branding campaign! Throughout the year, the white glove was spotted at many of our events!

Finally, Communications Council significantly increased advertising in the Vir-ginian-Pilot, Tidewater Women, Inside Business, Flourish Magazine, Hampton Roads Magazine, The Health Journal, House and Home Magazine, 97.3 F.M., 92.9 F.M., and appeared twice on The Hampton Roads Show to promote JL-NVB events, cookbooks, recruiting, and to increase community engagement.

What is the Junior League?Founded in 1925, the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. (JLNVB) is a charitable nonprofit organization of women civic leaders positively impact-ing South Hampton Roads. We are part of The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI), which is made up of 292 Junior Leagues throughout Can-ada, Mexico, the UK, and the USA. Together, we constitute one of the largest, most effective volunteer organizations in the world.

Who are the members of the Junior League?The Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. reaches out to women of all races, ages, and religious and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to voluntarism.

What is the mission of the organization?The Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. is an organization of wom-en committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

What is the vision of the organization?We are an organization of diverse women creating positive change in the lives of women and children in South Hampton Roads.

What do we do?• Volunteer services, administer guidance, and supply financial support for

our Signature Issue, Healthy Kids Initiative.• Educate and train members through volunteer work and the JLNVB Lead-

Who are we, Who, Who, Who?We used to be known for wearing our pearls.We were known as a group of fundraising, smiling girls.Now, that is nothing to be ashamed aboutBecause the money raised was for people without.Our grandmothers and mothers were really ahead of their times,They learned how to raise a penny and transform it into a dime.Over the years this group of women evolvedAnd bigger community problems needed to be solved.Because women can evolve and adapt.Finding their spot in the community was a snap.Things sure have changed for this group of ladies,Married, single, moms with careers,They could do anything, anything but be lazy.From white gloves, pearls and afternoon tea,To scrubbing toilets in places we needed to be.Of course we’re still social but it’s called networking today.Learning from one generation to the next,This little club has impacted so many communities for the best.So stand tall and hold your head high,You’re Junior Leaguers and you know we’re not shy.There are hundreds of thousands of Leaguers worldwide,And every step you take they’re all right there by your side.“We are women, hear us roar”And we are leaders and mentors and so much more.We have tools and skills and are willing to serve.We are competent, organized, educated and certainly aren’t reserved.We make a difference everywhere we go.We make a difference in everything we do.And for every community that has a League, they know it’s true.League members are invested, connected and knowledgeable volunteers.We are resourceful, objective and know our mission is clear.We are committed to giving back,Helping our communities by taking up some slack. When there is a need for trained volunteers, The Junior League is the group to call. After all, we’ve been doing it for 107 years!
