Our Mission

The Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. is an orga-nization of women, committed to promoting voluntarism, de-veloping the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volun-teers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

I can’t believe the holidays are upon us! It goes with-out saying that it has been a very busy League year

to date. We’ve had several successful League socials/fundrais-ers; most recently a great time was had by League members, friends, and family at the Halloween Party and at Guadala-jara’s at Virginia Beach Town Center. Additionally, we held our fabulous 7th Annual Merrytime Market shopping event on November 13, complete with great vendors (and Santa even made an early appearance)!

I am also very proud of our new partnership with the Girl Scout Council of the Colonial Coast and the introduction of our 2010-2011 patch program “It’s A Girl’s World.” Over 50 girls earned a custom JLNVB patch last month and we are looking at hold-ing this event again in May. One of the best parts of the day was when a young Scout was leaving she turned to her mother and said, “This was the best day ever!” In addition to the Girl Scout partnership, we brought specialized mobile Kids in the Kitchen programs to local Boys and Girls clubs throughout Hampton Roads to further our Signature Issue, Healthy Kids Initiative, and continue our mission of promoting voluntarism and improving our communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Speaking of leadership, our Passion into Action and Leadership Institute series are well underway with more great trainings to come in the Spring. And, we’ve got a lot to look forward to in December with the Holiday Homes Tour and Tree Decorating Party at the Taylor-Whittle House. It will be nice to take a moment to relax under the soft glow of the holiday lights, sip some warm cider, and reflect on all we’ve accomplished so far this year.

To that end, I’d like to give thanks to all of the League mem-bers, sponsors, and Community Partners who take action with us at all of our events and support us in so many ways. I sin-cerely appreciate your time, effort, energy, and contributions.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Kimberly C. Thompson2010-2011 PresidentJunior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc.

On Saturday, November 13, the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. hosted the 7th Annual Merrytime Market at the Sandler Center in Virginia Beach. We welcomed a

combination of returning businesses as well as a few new ones, bringing the total to 34 vendors at this year’s event. Though scaled back in volume over last year’s event, vendors were pleased with the location and called it “elegant,” “interesting,” “sophisticated,” and “accessible.” We went to great lengths to take care of our vendors by providing coffee, bagels and Krispy Kreme donuts during the morning setup. “Food Runners” served coffee and bottled water, and took orders from the menu for vendors and delivered food to their booths throughout the day. As I circulated through the Market throughout the day, vendors stopped me to say “Thank You” for all the little extras that the JLNVB members provided along the way to make them feel welcome and appreciated.

Shannon Wright and the Communications Council did a superb job of marketing the event through a variety of channels. With guidance from Susan Malandrino, JLNVB Treasurer, and marketing assistance from Sabrina Zimring, Merrytime Market Committee member, we were ad-vertised on the back page of Tidewater Women, on every Sandler Center marquee and we had a very chic banner ad on Pilot Online and countless mentions on Facebook. Kimberly Thompson appeared on The Hampton Roads Show on Friday morning to discuss how Merrytime Market supports our Mission and how the funds raised are used to further our work in the community.

JLNVB member Angie Jones worked Check In like a pro and sold stacks of raffle tickets. Provi-sional Hope Keys went beyond the call of duty and checked in with me regularly in the weeks leading up to the event, asking what needed to be done to help make it success. Between her dedication to the League, and the amazing dish she brought to the October cluster meeting at Cinda Ayers’ home, we jokingly call her an “Honorary First-Year Active!”

Annie Coombes, Merrytime Market 2010 Chair-Elect, and I would like to especially thank Pro-visional Janelle Hamilton who, through her immense network of vendors and clients, brought in a great many vendors to this year’s event. She also joined us as a vendor with Modern Momma by Janelle, which was a hit at the show.

We’re already planning Merrytime Market 2011...we’ll see you there!

Janelle, you worked so hard and went so far beyond the expectations for a Provisional mem-ber, we owe you much gratitude! You’ve given us great insight into what vendors expect in a

show and your advice has been invaluable. Thank you for your positive attitude…you bring light to any stressful situation and generally keep the rest of us going with your humor and upbeat approach to life in general. By virtue of multiple nominations from League membership, we’re pleased to announce that you’ve been selected as this November’s Member of the Month!

A great time was had by all!

On October 6, 2010, 75 children gathered at the Rosemont Boys and Girls Club for the first JLNVB Kids Café program. JLNVB members shared information about healthy eating and

nutrition with the children in a fun learning environment. Activ-ities included making a healthy trail mix snack and participating in outside exercises such as the shuttle run and jumping rope. The children were able to learn some nutritional facts and trivia by answering questions and for every correct answer were able to get a bean bag to toss into our giant food pyramid. Each child went home with a jump rope to continue exercising at home. Fun was had by both the children and our volunteers!

To Sustainer Jane Short for speaking on “Con-fessions of a Volunteer-aholic” at the October

21, 2010 Passion Into Action Luncheon.

Thank you to Denise Kellam who did an out-standing job coordinating the Day of Caring volunteers from Hampton Roads Sanitation Dis-trict (HRSD) to finish a multitude of projects that were outstanding at the Taylor-Whittle House.

The Nominating Committee is soliciting applications for the Tampa ODI to be held March 11-13, 2011. Four League members will be selected to attend this three-day weekend (noon

Friday to noon Sunday) program.

Organizational Development Institutes (ODIs), a series of Mission-based training meetings, are a critical component of AJLI’s training program. These training sessions are geared toward building the knowledge of League members who manage the League’s key functions.

Delegates will come away with greater knowledge, fresh ideas and a plan to implement what they have learned. Participants will attend three plenary sessions and will participate in an as-signed concentration track of one of the following: Membership Development, Fund Devel-opment, Community Impact, Building Internal Capacity and Electing Leaders for Tomorrow’s League.

At ODIs, delegates build organizational capacity by learning about:• innovative approaches to developing Junior League members as effective volunteer leaders in their communities• powerful ways to design community programs and partnerships that have significant impact• strategies for sustainable and diversified fund development• keys to building strong internal operational controls• developing an effective nominating process to strengthen the Leagues leadership base

In order to meet the hotel and registration deadline, applications for consideration to attend are due to Courtney Davio, Nominating Chair, on Wednesday, November 24, 2010. Selected at-tendees will be notified mid-December.

The application can be found under the jlnvb.org Training tab.

The Thanksgiving holiday is many things to many people. For some, it’s an opportunity to travel to a fun destination and meet other adventure-seekers enjoying the holiday in a non-tradition-

al way. For others, it’s a chance to gather with family and friends, and to enjoy the many blessings in life. For our service members and their families, it’s a time of remembrance and appreciation for the sacrifices great and small that are made every day for our abundant freedom as Americans. One thing we all agree on is this: Thanksgiving is about great food! It brings us together in fellow-ship, laughter and ohhh…the leftovers!

A major Thanksgiving staple in my family has always been homemade mashed potatoes…I can’t imagine the holiday without them. My mother always made them from scratch, leaving just enough of the little potato chunks throughout to let you know it was the real thing…no potato flakes in that kitchen! Admittedly, standard mashed potatoes can get boring…so, why not dress them up this year? Try this twist on the typical potato dish and watch your guests grin with delight!

As members of the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc., we strive to uphold our mis-sion. At the same time JLNVB fulfills many different needs for us. A huge asset of being a mem-ber of JLNVB is the training you receive while being groomed to be a leader. We learn to be leaders in our personal and professional lives, in our communities, and JLNVB, all while con-tinuously developing our own potential.

There are several opportunities for you to learn about the leadership opportunities within the League. We held cluster meetings in October to help explain the different Board of Director positions available and the role of the Nominating Committee to help you attain one of those positions. Also, there was a Leadership Placement Fair, which was held during the Merry Min-utes of the November General Membership Meeting. This event gave members an opportunity to learn more about Board of Directors and Chair-level leadership positions. During the Leadership Placement Fair, attendees were able to talk to members currently holding leadership positions in order to learn more about the responsibilities and rewards of those various roles. Also, over the next couple of months, you will notice articles in eTIDEings describing the different Councils of our League and listing the available positions within those Councils.

Have you heard the phrase “you should self-nominate”? Have you ever wondered what does that mean exactly? It means, set your leadership goals within the League and then actively pur-sue them. The process of self-nomination is vital to leadership development. When you choose to step up for a Board, Chair, or specific Committee position, you are choosing to further de-velop your potential. In turn, the League will gladly provide you with necessary training that not only helps you as a volunteer within the League, but also appropriately designs skills that trans-fer to your challenges and responsibilities at home, in the community, and in the workforce.

One of the best ways to self nominate is to speak with your Advisor or Mentor about the roles you are interested in pursuing – whether now or in the future. She is there for you to discuss your personal League goals, to help you map your JLNVB career path and be your advocate with the Placement Committee. One way she will do this is to conduct a Placement Interview at the end of the year. These interviews are an effort to help find you a Placement for the upcoming year that will be both challenging and fulfilling and will help you gain the skills for your long term League career goals.

There are many Board and Chair positions available and we need you to fill them. All of our members have valuable experience, insight, and energy that we want to tap. Our goal is to match our trained leaders with roles within the League that they will thrive in and in return have a direct impact on the community. You provide us with an invaluable resource and accepting a leadership role offers you an opportunity to grow in new ways and spread your wings. So, if you receive the call asking you to fill a leadership position, please consider accepting the position and know that it will benefit you, the JLNVB, and the community at large. We cannot fulfill our mission without the hard work and dedication of our JLNVB members!

What makes 160,000 women in 4 countries join a women’s volunteer organization dedicated to fostering civic leadership?

The enduring legacy of Junior League founder, Mary Harriman.

But who was Mary Harriman?

She was born to great wealth as the daughter of E.H. Harriman, the 19th Century railroad magnate. And she was emotionally moved by the appalling living conditions of recently arrived immigrants on the Low-er East Side of Manhattan.

Rather than just look away, Mary did something about it. At 19, the debutante daughter of one of the rich-est men in the U.S. formed the Junior League for the Promotion of Settlement Movements.

And she didn’t just write a check. Mary “put on her work gloves” and mobilized a group of 80 other young women (hence the name “Junior” League) to actively work to improve child health, nutrition and literacy among what we would now call “at risk” pop-ulations. Among those friends was the young Eleanor Roosevelt, long before her time as First Lady, who joined the Junior League of The City of New York in 1903, teaching calisthenics and dancing to young girls at the College Settlement House.

Realizing the value of the knowledgeable and skilled volunteer to producing lasting impact, it was Mary who decided that training should be central to the mission of The Junior League. Armed with their newfound skills, Junior League volunteers found themselves confident in their

ability to develop solutions to the problems in their communities. At a time when women faced barriers to affecting and leading change, training allowed early Junior League volunteers to gain the necessary tools to mobilize around issues such as women’s suffrage, advocating for improved child welfare policies and even going so far as to join the ranks of political leadership.

There were many other young women who became famous later in public life - including at least three First Ladies (Betty Ford, Nancy Reagan, and Barbara Bush), the first female Supreme Court Justice (Sandra Day O’Connor), and the first female United States Senator (Mar-garet Chase Smith) - who received their early training in civic leadership at a Junior League.

And there have been many more young women who never became “famous” but who work for positive action in their communities, both as League members and leaders and as members and leaders of other organizations committed to addressing many of our country’s most pressing social problems.

So the next time someone asks you, “Why is the Junior League important today,” you can say, “Because of Mary Harriman.”
