• Late 1960’s, US Defense Dept. begins theinternet as a military project.

• Government creates a network towithstand a nuclear attack across a largearea

• Network quickly grew to includeresearchers and scientists across thecountry and eventually the world

• Consists of thousands of connectednetworks around the world

• Connected to share information

• Common uses include:– Electronic Mail (e-mail) and discussion groups

– Online shopping

The most common methods of connecting tothe internet are:

1. Modem: Connecting through a phoneline. Usually at 56 kilo bytes per second(Kbps)

2. ISDN: Integrated service digital networkis like a digital phone line offered bytelephone companies.

3. Cable Modem: Offered by cablecompanies, this method connects to theinternet using the same cable thatattaches to a television set. Speeds of upto 3000 kbps

4. DSL: Digital Subscriber Line is a serviceoffered by telephone companies atspeeds from 1,000 to 6,000 kbps.

• The world wide web, known as the web, ispart of the internet

• Each page on the internet has a uniqueaddress called a URL (Uniform ResourceLocator)

• Web page is a document on the web(could include text, images, sounds, video)

• A web site is a collection of web pages
