From the Desk of Fr. Connolly November 13, 2016November: The Month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory

Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary TimeFirst Reading: Malachi 3:19-21a

This reading foretells of the just judgment, when the wicked will be destroyed but those who are faithful to God will be healed.

Second Reading: 2 Thessalonians 3:7-12Although not part of this reading, St. Paul addressed a prob-lem in that some members of the Thessalonian community believed that judgment was upon them, and had ceased to work for a living - probably the result of a false message that had been incorrectly attributed to St. Paul.

As a result, St. Paul reminded the Thessalonians about how he had conducted himself while in their presence - working for his own food, not being a burden to others, not being disorderly.

Gospel: Luke 21:5-19The Gospel reading is typically complemented by an Old Testament reading. This Sunday, both the Old and New Tes-tament readings reinforce the Gospel, but in different ways. The Old Testament reading relates to the time of judgment. The New Testament addresses false prophets (like the one who sent a false message in St. Paul’s name) who predict the imminent coming of our judgment. Jesus’ warning was to not listen to them. Other things must happen first - things that will challenge us to defend our faith with perseverance.

Next Week: Christ the King SundayFirst Reading: 2 Samuel 5:1-3

Second Reading: Colossians 1:12-20Gospel: Luke 23:35-43

Mission StatementWith the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we the Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe, seek to give mean-ing to our faith by following Christ’s command to care for His people, by fostering actions that nourish both the spiritual and social needs of our people and build community within and without our parish.

It is our Catholic custom to devote the month of November to praying for the repose of the holy souls in purgatory. In that vein, it is helpful for us to review the Church’s teachings on purgatory.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines purgatory as a “purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven,” which is experienced by those “who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified” (CCC 1030). It notes that “this final purification of the elect ... is entirely different from the punishment of the damned” (CCC 1031).

The purification is necessary because, as Scripture teaches, nothing unclean will enter the presence of God in heaven (Rev. 21:27) and, while we may die with our mortal sins absolved, there can still be many impurities in us, specifically venial sins and the temporal punishment due to sins already absolved.

Purgatory then, offers us the opportunity to perfect our conversion to the Lord that already began during this life. Only after death will we be able to acquire a true sense of the greatness and majesty of God and our unworthiness to be in His presence. St. Matthew’s Gospel speaks of a man who arrives at a wedding banquet without the right wed-ding clothes (Mt 22:11). Similarly, we will not want to enter heaven sullied by attachment to sin. We will rather, only desire to enter heaven perfected in God’s grace, when we have no attachment to sin, and love the Lord with all our hearts. This work of perfecting God’s grace within us is done in purgatory.

Importantly, we members of the Church still on earth can assist those in purgatory by praying for them. Having Masses offered for them, in particular, is the most effective way to hasten the process of their purification so they may enter more quickly into the eternal joy of heaven. Praying for the dead is a tradition firmly rooted in Sacred Scripture: “It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.” (2 Maccabees 12:46). Let us in the month of November then, go and do likewise!

Parents Connect MeetingThursday, November 17

Join us on Thursday, November 17th at 10:00 AM in the Lower Level of Father Fata Hall. The Parents Connect mis-sion is to provide an opportunity for parents to connect and learn from each other in a welcoming, open and faith filled environment. We will discuss Divine Mercy for Moms - Sharing the Les-

sons of St. Faustina by Michele Faehnle and Emily Jaminet. If you don’t have time to read the chapters, please join us anyway; we use the book to initiate conversation.

Child care is provided. Please contact Mi-chelle at [email protected] or 787-0005 to RSVP and let us know how many children will be joining you.

CCD 2.0 is going very well! The children have adapted to the new method, and they are enjoying learning about and experiencing their faith in a new way.

Each session begins all together in the cafeteria. Each child sits in a place that is marked with their name and color-coded for their group. We begin with a prayer, and then the groups go upstairs to their first classroom. Each classroom is set up for the specific domain - for example, big-screen TV/Video/iPad, floor lamp for prayer room, SmartBoard prepared, etc. When the children enter the classroom, they find their name and sit in the place pre-pared. At the end of each domain, the children prepare the name card for the next group coming into that class-room. Each domain lasts 15 minutes, and when the bell rings, the children exit the classroom and line up at the color-coded cones in the hallway to wait for their cate-chist/teacher to lead them into the next domain. By the 2nd or 3rd week, the children had the procedures down pat!

The domains are planned around the curriculum of the Archdiocese for religious education, according to grade level. We are using a wonderful textbook series, approved by the Archdiocese, as the foundation of all the content lessons. The children are also learning different ways to pray: Lectio Divina (an excellent method of praying with the Scripture), reflecting on their day (“Rummaging for God”), and the traditional prayers that are necessary for each grade to learn and dictated by the Archdiocesan curriculum. They also play interactive games based on the content they are learning. Through the year they are watching scenes from Jesus of Nazareth, the Franco Zef-ferelli film, to help them visualize the stories they hear at Sunday Mass.

So, the children are very busy in the time they spend here. The time flies, and the children leave happy!

63. Can Catholics Practice Yoga?

Physical exercises that are common to yoga that promote health and physical well-being are fine. What Catholics should not do is participate in non-Christian Eastern spir-ituality. If yoga contains non-Christian Eastern spiritual-ity, one can do the physical exercises but refrain from the prayers. As a general rule of thumb, Christian spirituality is interpersonal (between persons) while non-Christian Eastern spirituality focuses the practitioner on the self.

If you have questions about any aspect of our Catholic Church and Faith, just drop us a note or call and we will answer them to the best of our ability.

The Parish NurseAlzheimer’s Disease

There are several stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Below is a short synopsis of each:

Stage 1: No Impairment: normal function.

Stage 2: Very Mild Cognitive Decline: The individual may notice memory lapses (forgetting familiar words or the loca-tion of common objects), but dementia symptoms are not typically picked up by family, friends, or medical providers.

State 3: Mild Cognitive Decline: Family and friends are starting to notice problems; doctors may be able to detect problems with memory or concentration. Common difficul-ties during this stage include noticeable problems coming up with the right word; trouble remembering names when intro-duced to people; have noticeably greater difficulty perform-ing tasks in social or work settings; lose or misplace valuable objects; increasing trouble with planning and organizing.

Stage 4: Moderate Cognitive Decline: Forgetful of recent events; impaired ability to perform challenging mental arith-metic; greater difficulty performing complex tasks (planning a dinner party, paying bills, managing finances); forgetful-ness about one’s own personal history; become moody or withdrawn.

Stage 5: Moderate-Severe Cognitive Decline: Gaps in mem-ory are noticeable and individuals need help with day to day activities. At this stage, individuals may be unable to re-call their own address; be confused about where they are or what day it is; need help getting dressed and choosing proper clothing; need assistance eating or using the bathroom.

Stage 6: Severe Cognitive Decline: Memory continues to worsen; individual needs extensive help with activities of daily living, and major personality changes (delusions or suspicion). At this stage, individual may lose awareness of recent experiences and their surroundings; experience major changes in sleep patterns; have increasing difficulty control-ling bowel and bladder functions; tend to wander and be-come lost.

Stage 7: Very Severe Cognitive Decline: Individuals lose the ability to respond to their environment, carry on a conversa-tion, and control movement. They may still be able to say words or phrases. They require help with all care and may lose muscle function (affecting ability to smile, sit, swallow, hold head up).

Pastoral CouncilIt is time for me to create a “Pastoral Council”. This will be a group of men and women, reg-istered parishioners, young and not so young who help to guide the Pastoral work of the parish: the ministries, apostolates, societies, community outreach, CCD, Regional school, cemetery, evangelization, welcoming new members, etc.

The vibrant life of our Parish in the Archdi-ocese of New York and the Catholic Church which I am mandated to Shepherd, requires the help of many people, both employed and an army of volunteers, to steer our Parish into living the Mission Statement found on the top of page 1.

If anyone is interested in talking to me about serving on a new Pastoral Council, just give me a call, or stop by, or mention it when we meet. I am going to try and put at least a first group in place before the New Year.

Respectfully in Christ,Father Anthony Sorgie
