1 Warranwood Primary School www.warranwood.vic.edu.au Term 2, Week 4 Thursday 7 May, 2015 SEMESTER ONE REPORTING Teaching staff have been assessing students throughout the year and will next week begin to write about their individual progress for the first half of the year. This process is time consuming as teachers are keen to ensure they give an accurate picture of where each child is, particularly when the reports won’t be available for a further six weeks. there will be a reporting week where teachers have a full day to write reports – this will be in Edeuca- tion Week when we have our Open Day. Students receive an indication of where they are in relation to the AusVELS, the Australian National Curriculum, with the exception of Preps, for whom it is too early to judge in terms of their progress. All students will get an indication of their progression at the end of year reports. Senior School students will not get comments about their performance in maths and English – we are trialling a Learn- ing Journal, where annotated work from the first half of the year will show what they are capable of doing. PREPS 2016 We have a Prep Information Night for prospective Prep parents next Wednesday night at 7:30pm. This is an op- portunity for new families to hear from staff, students and parents about the wonderful things we do here at War- ranwood. Please let people know!! OPEN DAY AND EVENING On Wednesday 20 May we will have an Open Morning for our Warranwood community to see the school in ac- tion. This morning will once again coincide with the World’s Biggest Morning Tea. We look forward to seeing lots of people around the school. Our School Captains will also be conducting tours for prospective parents. In the evening of the same day we will be having an Open Night where everyone in the community is again invit- ed to join us (perhaps if you couldn’t make it during the day!) to have a look at our classrooms and to celebrate the wonders of maths through games in particular. GROUNDS FUNDING GRANTS Thanks to Kirsty Bishop-Fox we have been successful in receiving two grants (so far!) this year. One is for ‘renovating’ the frog bog area, which is on the fence-line behind the running track. This area has filled with silt and is becoming overgrown – not much space for those frogs! We are planning to clean out the frog bog – for- mally known as Nangkita Wetlands, and replant all the way back to the Wonga Road fence. The other project is the garden area between the art room/Mia’s room and the courtyard. We hope to turn this area into an orchard and edible garden (there are a couple of fruit trees already there!) Both are exciting projects which will enhance the appeal of our school grounds. We will be having extra working bees for these projects and look forward to lots of community support. Sports News. We ran our annual House Cross Country event last Monday, running in the early morning freshness. Eight runs were conducted in age and gender groups. The students listed below earned medals for finishing in the top three and Wonga won the event for the first time in many years. Lots of parents were there to support and help, thank you. Before the event started House Captains inspired their team with speeches and I displayed two flags from our school values; ‘Do Your Best’ and ‘Respect’. While not everyone can win medals or make the school team everyone can endeavour to do their best and respect themselves and the event. If that was the measure the event was successful. Medal winners were Kristian F, Jackson K, Dylan O’N, Emily P, Jacinta Mc, Kylah N, Sophie S, Olivia J, Kenna K, Orlando M, Zac F, Zac H, Natasha B, Alana W, Rebekah P, Josh A, Aiden B, Matthew H, Liam B, Tyler L, Flynn P, Lainey M, Ella R & Kiera W. Tennis Cooper S, Tristan S and Alexandra K all took part in the District tennis trials, also on Monday morning, and per-formed well. They won games, drew games and lost games. Each student was eliminated but as they are all Y5 students they may have the same opportunity next year. ROD NEAL

PERFORMING ARTS

Performing Arts News Auditions for our Senior School production ‘THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY’ will be held in the week start-ing Monday May 18th 2015. The year six students wishing to audition will be expected to create a short monologue from the audition script given to them at the End of term One. If their character sings, they should also prepare a section of the song and perform it in their character. Auditions will be held each lunchtime. Unfortunately I am unable to give you an audition schedule as you can imagine it is impossible to gage how long it will take for each individual to audition and how many students will audition for each part. The order of auditions held will be as follows- *Willy Wonka *Charlie *Grandpa Joe *Augustus *Veruca *Violet *Mike Teavee *Oompa Loompa *Mr & Mrs Bucket *Mr & Mrs Gloop *Mr & Mrs Salt *Mr & Mrs Beauregarde *Mr & Mrs Teavee *Mrs Toffee *Mrs Apple *Cherry the reporter *Kerry the reporter *Grandpa George & Grandma Georgina & Josephine

REMEMBER TO KEEP THE DATE THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY Monday September 14th 2015

The Mahon Theatre at Aquinas College Senior School students are currently doing Theatre Studies on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and are about to begin the script writing process by creating our own version of the story by combining all scripts into one. This is an image from our Green Screen filming of the Junior School Production - they were are all shining stars. Jacinta O’Leary Performing Arts

Japanese Culture Corner by Aya Sensei

Hi, I am the new Japanese assistant teacher. Today I want to tell you about Children's Day in Japan. Each year Children's Day is celebrated on May 5th to wish all chil-dren prosperity. This Day was once celebrated as the Boys' Day Festival. Families still fly streamers from flag-poles with carp kites outside the house of families with boys. The carp fish is seen as a symbol of strength in Ja-pan. This week all our classes have been making some Children's Day craft that will be displayed on Open Night! **Please remember Japanese Day on June 11th. Our classes are practising performances for Japa-nese Day. I hope you will join us in the afternoon on Japanese Day 2.30pm-3.30pm.
