Overview of Learning Experiences This Term Session: 2017/18 Class: Primary 1 Term: 4 Teacher: Mrs Orlagh O’Hagan Curricular Areas / Main Focus Languages and Literacy: Reading: We are revising our 42 Jolly Phonics sounds this term. Each week we are revising our sounds to secure and broaden our Jolly Phonics knowledge. We are continuing to SAY/MAKE/BLEND/READ/WRITE new words everyday in class. We will continue to learn our tricky words for our tricky word tree. Writing : This term we are building independence to write our own words for our stories. We will use pictures and story boards to tell our weekly stories to the class, as well as, using our phonics to help us write our own stories independently. We are practicing our letter formation and learning to hold our pencil correctly on a daily basis. We will be developing our fine motor skills during activities and play. Talking and listening skills : In Primary 1 we play lots of games which enhance our talking and listening skills. We are learning to share our feelings and stories with each other and become more confident when speaking aloud. French: We will be continuing to learn some simple greetings in French. We are learning to say “Hello/Bonjour” and “Goodbye/Au revoir” to each other during the day. This term we will also learn to say “thank you/merci”. We will also be learning how to count up to 10. Mathematics/Numeracy: Curricular Areas / Main Focus Health & Wellbeing We are instilling a positive growth mindset in all our learning. We give it a go and learn from our mistakes. This helps to build our confidence. The children will use the phrase “I can’t do it yet”. Our class social skill for the term will focus on sharing our feelings and helping others. This term we will be learning about Our Body and how to keep healthy. We will encourage the children to ask questions about different foods and trying to taste new foods regularly. Religious Education We will continue to say our prayers for morning, night and lunch times. We are also learning the Our Father and some Mass responses. We will encourage and model prayers of thanksgiving daily, so that pupils become familiar with the process. We will continue to have a Prayer Leader who will assess our prayers each day. This term we will focus on; Why we go to Church, The Ascension, Pentecost, The Love of God, Psalms, Mary the Mother of us all. Expressive Arts This term we are following a music program called Charanga. We will continue to learn new songs to help teach us about rhythm. We will use the songs to help with rhyming words and phrases. We will be performing nursery rhymes in class to help the children remember their rhyming words, through acting and singing.

Mathematics/Numeracy:Calculation – Counting in 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. Saying the numbers to 100 finding them on a 100 square. Even and Odd numbers. Counting out objects up to 10 in a line and in a pile. Ordering numbers.Learn Its – 2+3=5, other ways switcher, it’s nothing new takeaways, Little Jigsaws all the facts in a fact family, Halving double Learn It’s.We will begin to learn some instant number facts. We will focus on 5 this term,

1+1=2 2+2=4 3+3=6 4+4=8 5+5=10

It’s Nothing New – Use a well known Learn It and swap it for objects (application), Introduce PIM.

TechnologiesWe will continue to use Ipads to help with our learning of Jolly Phonics. We will be using technology during our reading sessions to listen to audio books and play interactive games about our weekly reading books and characters.

InterdisciplinaryOur topic this term is Nature and Places (The Garden & The Seaside). We will be looking at a number of different places around our local community that connect to this topic. We will be learning to grow our own food and plants at school. This will encourage the children to interact with the world around them.We will be following the Golden rules in school.

Calculation – Fair sharing (the start of division), Revising the number after, one more, the number before, one less, moving on to adding and subtracting 3,4 and 5 mentally.Measure – Time, Length and Weight.We will be consolidating all our learning in Primary 1 and revising and practicing all we have learned so far.We will have opportunities to choose how we present our learning

Notes from Class Teacher:Welcome back to the final term of Primary 1! The p1 children are working so well in class, we have one zero lesson in class a day where the noise level is at zero, the boys and girls are excellent at this. They have learned an incredible amount in p1 and now work independently at their desks.As the children are working so hard in school they will be excited to show you some of their work, which we will put on the school website as often as possible.
