Peoria Urban Program Center

The Girl Scouts of Central Illinois recently started a campaign to raise funds for a

new Peoria Urban Program Center. The goal is to raise $1 million so that they can

renovate the current 1250 Sq. Ft. building to a spacious 2300 Sq. Ft. The Peoria Urban

Program Center UPC would serve over 5,000 girls, 1,000 adult volunteers and 900+ girls

in outreach programs across eight counties. The UPC would be safe place to build girls

self-confidence and courage by providing exercises on health and wellness and team-

building activities. The plans include a an interactive teaching kitchen, a science,

technology, engineering and math lab, programs rooms and outdoors space. All of these

things would be available to the 5,000 girls in troops in the Peoria area. Pictured above is

the new design for the renovated building.

The Girl Scouts of Central Illinois office is really excited about the science,

technology, engineering and math lab that would be in cooperated into the new building.

Typically men dominate these fields and the Girl Scouts are trying to encourage young

girls to develop an interest in these areas of study. The STEM lab would bring in leaders

from the community to pass along their knowledge to the girls. They would do activities

with them so the girls get a better understanding of the industry and how fun these areas

of study can be. In the new building there would be an interactive teaching kitchen, a

multi-purpose room for troop activities and a cookie receiving area for the thousands of

boxes the Peoria area sells every year. Above is a photo of the layout for the inside of the

new building.

Right now the Girl Scouts are taking donations to reach the goal of $1 million to

start construction on the UPC. You can donate in three different ways to this wonderful

project. The first is text to donate, which will donate $10 from your cell phone bill to the

Girl Scouts. Text EMPOWER to the number 20222 and then reply YES to the

confirmation message. The second is online through the national website

www.getyourgirlpower.org/donors. Fill out the form and select “Would like my gift to

benefit Girls served by the Peoria Service Center” in the dropdown box and type “Peoria

Urban Program Center” in the personal message box. The third option is to call the Girl

Scouts directly and talk to Ashley in the fund development office at 309-282-0809.
