The Parish of St. Paul’s on the Green A PROGRESSIVE, DIVERSE PARISH OF THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH OFFERING A RADICAL WELCOME TO ALL! The Second Sunday of Advent – December 7, 2014 Changing and Being Changed The chaos and pain in our world is everywhere. It is both global and local. Ferguson, Staten Island, Syria, W. Africa – places where our brokenness, humanity’s brokenness is front and center. Places where persons hurt one another, where they are ravaged by illness or neglect, by the inequity of “the system” or the lack of dignity that is the God-given right of every human. It is into this world, our world, that Isaiah the Prophet and John the Baptist come this morning. And both are calling us to change our attitudes and actions, to evaluate our priorities, to alter our course, to prepare for the coming of Jesus. Change is never easy, on any level. We humans like the security of the familiar. Yet change is something God seems to like, something God is always about, and always calling us to. Can we affect change in the world? Can we be changed? Yes, say both John and Isaiah. Check our attitudes, our prejudices and align them with God’s priorities of love and justice and equality for all of God’s children. Hard work, for sure. And yet most easily done in community, working with our brothers and sisters here at St. Paul’s to change the world and be changed by God. We’re glad you’re among us today. Welcome! About Our Worship If you are here for the first time today, welcome! The style of our worship is Anglo- Catholic which draws upon ancient liturgical practices of the Christian Church. You’ll see graceful ritual and colorful vestments, hear chant and wonderful music, and even smell a little incense. We try not to make our worship stuffy or stodgy and, so, you might see our acolytes in sandals or sneakers! We hope that you will come away refreshed and renewed – and that you’ll return often! Phones Please turn them off. Holy Communion All are welcome to receive the Holy Eucharist – toddlers, children, people of faith and those unsure of their direction, without regard to politics, race or orientation. A RADICAL WELCOME TO ALL!

The Second Sunday of Advent – December 7, 2014

Changing and Being ChangedThe chaos and pain in our world is everywhere.

Welcome!

About Our WorshipIf you are here for the first time today, welcome! The style of our worship is Anglo-Catholic which draws upon ancient liturgical practices of the Christian Church. We try not to make our worship stuffy or stodgy and, so, you might see our acolytes in sandals or sneakers! We hope that you will come

The Presence Lamp is the candle that burns continuously before the reserved sacrament in the Lady Chapel. Suggested donation is $10 per week. Call (203.847.2806) or email the parish office ([email protected]) to reserve your week for either.

Pastoral Care

If you or a family member is seriously ill or in the hospital, our clergy and Pastoral Care Team would like to support you. Please contact Mother Kalemkerian at (203) 536-9259 or Lilian Revel at (203) 858-1243.

Why am I asked to make a Pledge?

♦ To allow you to partner with God in the sacred work of reconciliation, healing, and restoration in the world.

♦ To invest in the important work of this radically welcoming faith community.

♦ To help ensure that St. Paul’s will continue to be here for you and those not yet here.

♦ Because we are an inclusive community and we want everyone to have a place at God’s Table and enjoying the gift of giving.

♦ God has blessed us with your presence. Please bless us with your generosity.

No pledge is too small. No pledge is too large.

Music Notes

Handel’s great oratorio Messiah hardly needs any introduction or explanation. For nearly two and a half centuries this incomparable work has stirred millions of listeners with its thrilling choruses and brilliant arias. This morning, to

celebrate the Second Sunday of Advent, we are treated to the opening chorus, “And the glory of the Lord”. In the order of Messiah, however, a soloist is the first voice heard, taking the role of John the Baptist. Both the sublime recitative “Comfort ye, my people” and the dazzling aria “Ev’ry valley” are sung this morning by our own tenor virtuoso, Eric Barry.
