Brrr! It's cold outside. Warm up with some great home cooking in Edible Education's winter wonderland cooking class! Students will be making heart-warming foods like Mac and Cheese, Turkey Chili, Homemade Hot Chocolate, and much, much more.

Ready, Set, Go! 60 seconds can feel like an eternity or slip away in a blink of an eye. Are you cool under pressure? Come join the Game Revolution and find out what it really means to be connected. No screens, no tablets, no controllers, just quick reflexes and even quicker minds. Each class will feature a series of challenges. It’s simple to rack up the points: If a player attempts the game, they automatically receive 3 points, and if they were able to complete the task in under a minute they receive 5 points. The only thing accumulating more than points is the laughter…

Dinosaur Discovery

Time: 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Do you know which dinosaur was nicknamed “long neck?” Do you know which dinosaur had the biggest head? Join us for a colossal journey into the world of dinosaurs. Build a dinosaur replica and have an archaeological dig just like a real paleontologist. In Dino Discovery, you will have a swamp stomping good time.

Young Rembrandts: Winterrific Draw-tooning

Time: 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Dates: January 29 – March 5

Make this a memorable winter by signing up your elementary child in a Young Rembrandts draw-tooning class. Your child will learn about basic design and composition in a traditional drawing lesson. Besides strengthening your child’s drawing and coloring skills, he or she will also learn about art history as we present a lesson featuring a master artist. In our cartoon drawing lessons your child will learn about exaggeration and drawing facial expressions. Personifying cuddly polar bear characters will teach our students to create fully realized cartoon characters. Encourage your child’s creativity and stoke their artistic fire. Enroll today!

Intro to Strings

Time: 4:00 – 4:45

Dates: January 29 – May 21 (no class Mar. 12)

Grade Levels: gr. 2 - 5

Offered by Greater Richmond School of Music

The Intro to Strings course for children in Grades 2-5, is designed to give a basic introduction to the violin, viola, cello and bass. Students will learn proper left/right hand techniques, anatomy of the instrument, how to produce a sound, and simple musical concepts. Students would also work on rhythms and simple songs, in addition to the basic instrument posture/bow hold. The course would then go on to teach more challenging beginning strings music and expand on concepts and techniques to get the student ready for further group or individual study. Student must provide their own instrument (or contact GRSM for rental information), and recitals are included in tuition.

WEDNESDAY:

Scientist in Training

Time: 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Dates: January 30 – March 6

Grade Level: JK- 3

Cost: $90

Take a dash of engineering and a sprinkle of earth science, toss it together with some fun and games, and you have an all new STEAM-based class. Scientists will explore the different worlds of science through weekly take home creations such as pizza gardens and rockets. Join us for this exciting journey into the world of science.

Winter Pottery Club

Time: 3:30 – 4:30

Dates: January 30 – March 6

Grade Levels: gr. JK - 5

Cost: $120

Offered by Cindy Grissom and Lynn Zinder

Join Mrs. Grissom and Mrs. Zinder for the winter pottery clinic. Spend six weeks exploring different hand building clay techniques to create a snowflake mobile, Decorative mitten pot, creative snowman statue and a slippery ice bowl. Join us for some hot chocolate the last day and enjoy our creations.

STEM Sports

Time: 3:30 – 5 p.m.

Dates: Jan. 30 – Mar. 6

Grade Level: gr. 4 – 8

The STEM Sports Science Class allows students to learn about the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) involved in sports. Students learn how Newton's Three Laws impacts soccer, baseball, basketball, golf and other sports. They will also participate in interactive sports activities culminating in the STEM Sports Science Olympics.

Lower School Yoga

Time: 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Dates: Jan. 31 – Mar. 7

Your child will enjoy an hour of stretching in yoga poses, learning stress relieving techniques through breathing and mindfulness meditation, and gaining healthy inspiring life values like gratitude, acceptance, inclusivity, and compassion for self, for others, and for the environment. Plus it is so much fun!

Design the Runway

Design your very own fashion line with us! Budding designers will create a fashion portfolio, create a one of a kind piece with recyclable goods and end the week with a Runway Show to stop Fashion Week! We will participate in several design challenges too. Come design the runway with us!

Jewelry

Time: 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Dates: Jan. 31 – Mar. 7

Cost: $120

During this class, students will learn how to create beautiful, handmade jewelry. In this intensive beading class, students will learn jewelry making techniques and complete several projects, including making earrings, bracelets and necklaces. After the class ends, students will have supplies to continue jewelry making at home. Students must be able to tie knots in order to participate. Previous students are welcome – they can always learn something new.

Teen and Adult Gentle Yoga

Time: 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Dates: Jan. 31 – Mar. 7

Cost: $70

Grade Levels: gr. 6 – adult

Offered by: Robin Ricketts, Steward faculty

This yoga practice will be a gentle introduction to the movements and poses of Hatha yoga. The emphasis will be on improving strength, flexibility, and balance. Participants should be able to kneel on hands and knees, sit cross legged on the floor, and lie down on the floor in both a prone and supine position. Each session will end with a guided relaxation.

FRIDAY:

Group Guitar Jr

Time: 3:30-4:00pm

Dates: February 1- May 24 (12 lessons - no class on early close days)

Grade: 1-3

Winter 2018 – Half Day Adventures

Regular AfterSchool Care will still run on Steward half days but we will offer these options in addition should students wish to participate. Afterschool Care fees will not be charged for Half Day Adventure participants during the time the adventure is running.

Time: 12 – 2:30 (Students will be charged for Afterschool Care only if they stay past 2:45 p.m.)

SkateNation houses a regulation NHL rink. Whether you are a beginner, a life-long skater, or anywhere in between, you are sure to have a great time at SkateNation Plus. Cost includes skate rental in addition to 1 ½ hours of skating.

February 15: Spirited Art

Time: 12:30 – 3 p.m. (Students will be charged for Afterschool Care only if they stay past 3:15 p.m.)

Cost: $40

Are you looking to have some fun painting? Or, maybe you’ve always wanted to learn how to paint. Either way, you are going to have a great time on this adventure. Knowing your shapes, letters, and colors are the only tools you need to get started. Spirited Art will provide all of the painting supplies (smocks, brushes, easels, canvases and everything in between).

March 29: Fishing with Virginia Outside

Time: 12 – 4 p.m. (Students will be charged for Afterschool Care only if they stay past 4:15 pm)

Cost: $80

Grade Levels: gr. 1 – 8

Offered by: Virginia Outside

Join Virginia Outside on March 29 for a trip to a private pond to fish for largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappie. Virginia Outside will pick students up at Steward at 12 p.m. and head to a farm in Rockville where they will fish from the bank and boats. All equipment provided. No experience necessary .

Lower School Homework Club

Time: 3:30 – 4:30

Dates: Monday through Thursday

Cost: weekly fee of $80.00 to be billed monthly via the Business Office

Grade Level: gr. 1 - 5

Want more family time at night? We realize that nightly homework and studying for tests can be as hard on parents as it is on the students. Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30, an experienced teacher will provide structure, and organization and study skills, while monitoring the homework completion to ensure your child is accurately practicing his skills. Test Prep methods will also be an emphasis as time allows. Families can sign up on a monthly basis. Space will be limited.

Music Lessons (Strings and Guitars)

Greater Richmond School of Music (GRSM) is pleased to announce that we will be providing extra-curricular music instruction through private and group lessons at The Steward School starting in January 2018. Instruction for private study will be available for violin, viola and guitar and group lessons will be available for violin, viola, cello and guitar.
